Ep154: Using Humility to Cultivate Relationships and Land Your Dream Gig In Network TV | with Scott Powell, ACE

Optimize Yourself

For my regular readers & listeners I know I may sound like a broken record at this point, but when it comes to forging your career path in any field it comes down to the same basic components: You need to clearly identify the right ladder to climb. You need to focus on becoming awesome at your craft. You need to make sure the right people know you are awesome at your craft. Having natural talent definitely doesn’t hurt, but talent alone doesn’t automatically entitle you to success. And working on projects you love never happens because of my least favorite word - “luck.” The difference between success and failure almost always comes down to perseverance, consistency, and building solid relationships. Today I’d like to add one additional ingredient that is often overlooked (but is the hidden superpower for longevity as a creative professional). That ingredient is humility. My guest today is a multiple award winning, seasoned film and television editor, Scott Powell, ACE, who is best known for his work on 9 seasons of the Fox series 24 where he was awarded 5 Emmy nominations, 3 American Cinema Editors (Eddie) nominations, and 2 wins. He has since worked on Prison Break, Person of Interest, The Chi, The Orville, and most recently, Queen of the South. But to hear him talk about his career path he's about as humble as they come. Despite believing that “you need to be an a**hole to make it to the top in Hollywood because nice guys finish last,” humility is a valuable asset in any career path you will pursue. In our conversation you'll hear why it's so important to cultivate humility in your own life and the relationships you build throughout your career and how to better do so. Like me, Scott is a natural mentor who has helped many land their dream gigs and offers words to anyone hoping to climb the ladder and become a successful editor in network & streaming television. How he made an impression on the producer for 24 to get hired. Advice from his dad that has served him well (along with some great stories). Why Scott enjoys mentoring and the mutual benefits it provides to himself and his mentees. What Scott looks for when he's hiring an assistant editor. How his relationships are the foundation of his career. Why Scott has an agent despite his ability to get his own jobs. The value of having an agent and how to build trust and loyalty with an agent. What it would take for Scott to recommend someone for the editor's chair on a show he's on. Scott's advice to someone trying to make it in the industry and what he would change from his own life. "You can't just stand up for yourself. We have to stand up together." Scott Jacobs When it comes to working the brutal hours that have become the norm in entertainment, negotiating for better pay, and fighting to make changes in industry standards, most of us feel helpless (and hopeless) about where to even begin. When I wrote Dear Hollywood: It’s Time For An Intervention About The Hours We Work this past summer, I was surprised to learn the majority of people in Hollywood have no interest in losing their golden time and overtime hours in exchange for shorter, more manageable workdays. While I have no interest in taking money out of anyone’s pocket, I do believe there has to be a better way than working 60+ hours a week and burning ourselves out just to make ends meet. Here’s a crazy thought: What if we were paid for the value we bring to a project rather than the number of hours we clock in each day? Today's guest Scott Jacobs, a longtime editor, AE, and MPEG board member, tackles this question with me. Scott has worked as an editor and assistant editor in both television and feature films on studio features such as The Bourne Legacy, Despicable Me 3, and Men in Black: International, and his TV credits include CBS' Person of Interest, NBC's Parks and Recreation, Fox’s The Orville, and he's currently working on Marvel's WandaVision for Disney+. As a father of two, Scott has had to wrestle with difficult choices between the faster track of being a television editor and the higher negotiating power of feature film assistant editing. His role as a Board Member of the Motion Picture Editor's Guild has made him very aware of the salary discrepancies between features and television along with the major challenge of work-life balance. He feels strongly about advocating for better wages and more sane working hours while also giving people the tools to advocate for themselves. If you’re interested in having a little bit more ammunition to advocate for a job that is more focused on value than hours, and most importantly working smarter (and not harder), my conversation with Scott is a must-listen. Want to Hear More Episodes Like This One? » Click here to subscribe and never miss another episode Here's What You'll Learn: How Scott went from video game junkie to finding a passion for film editing. His surprising strategy for networking and making connections right out of school in 2006. How he got his first job as a Post Production Assistant four months out of college. What connections and skills enabled Scott to jump back and forth between television and film. Why assistant editors in television are paid unfairly and should be paid commensurate with experience. KEY TAKEAWAY: Assistants in features have negotiating power (those in TV do not). Scott's candid thoughts on why the union can't negotiate making shorter working hours part of the contract. His plea for greater member involvement in order to negotiate change in the union. The many factors that led to Scott’s decision to go back to assisting in features rather than look for his second editing job in television. While he was losing the love for performing, he wasn’t losing the love of wanting to be in the entertainment industry. Upon taking an introductory film course, Scott watched Baz Luhrman’s Moulin Rouge!. What captivated him the most were the visual effects and the editing. After reading more about film editing and discovering that the job combined his love of technology and theater, he knew that editing is what he wanted to do with his life. After his discovery, he taught himself iMovie, then Final Cut Pro, and finally Avid. This eventually led to Scott attending the AFI Masters in Film Editing program from 2005-2007. Since graduating, he has been fortunate enough to work on studio features such as The Bourne Legacy, Despicable Me 3, and Men in Black: International. Some of his TV credits include CBS' Person of Interest, NBC's Parks and Recreation, and Fox’s The Orville. Currently, Scott is thrilled to be working on Marvel's WandaVision coming to Disney+ in January 2021. Scott has also been serving on the Motion Picture Editors Guild's Board of Directors since 2017. Scott Desgrosseilliers is the CEO and founder of Wicked Reports. He established the company to facilitate optimization and acceleration of the digital marketing ROI for small and medium-sized businesses. The ideal Wicked Reports customers are people who sell products online. Scott opines that companies should strive to track lifetime customer value. Wicked Reports strives to help SaaS businesses have a clear picture of their paid advertising progress. Listen to Scott as he discusses his story with Geordie Wardman. What You Will Learn How Scott started his journey Why entrepreneurs should spend money on a campaign and the impact of the same on long-term ROI How Scott and his friend leveraged Facebook campaigns to attract leads Importance of Email when it comes to closing leads Why entrepreneurs should read widely What Scott does best How did Scott gain customers while still consulting for his friend? How Scott came up with his pricing What challenges did Scott face during his journey? How companies can leverage offers to increase awareness and make more money Where does Scott source his developers? Why you should pay your employees well Which of Scott’s marketing methods is the most effective for his business? In this Episode: Marketing attribution is the value or credit that you allocate to a particular marketing touchpoint. Experts define it as the science of establishing the ideal marketing drive or media that drives revenue. Scott says the idea behind market attribution is that you spent where your money is making money to increase your earnings. Again, you desist from wasting money where you do not make money. Before starting his SaaS journey, Scott was running databases amid other tasks like being a technical architect and project management. He was getting tired of these tasks and wanted to leave. When Scott shared his feelings with his seniors, they requested him to work for a year. Scott shares some detailed information with Geordie on what happened next. Listen in to find out what he said. Scott would later collaborate with his friend, who had a lobster business and lots of work to handle. However, he (Scott's friend) was struggling to keep his business afloat amid a competitive space. At some point, Scott's friend sought his help in a bid to convert leads. Scott explains how he leveraged this opportunity to demonstrate his capabilities. He ended up becoming his friend’s consultant, and within a short period, he helped him close many deals. Listen to Scott as he shares all the details with Geordie. Scott says that he established Wicked Reports out of passion but reiterates that the company happened by chance. After launching his SaaS Company, Scott and his team printed T-shirts with the company name ingrained in them. The team wore the T-shirts and walked around, asking people what they were doing to track their ROI. They interviewed different business owners to find out whether their emails were earning them money. Scott and his team were surprised that no one they interviewed had a definitive answer. That is how Scott identified a pain point and decided to work on it. He says the demand for a SaaS product was so high that his company hit the first MRR within the first year after launching. Surprisingly, they achieved all this by relying on word of mouth. Listen to Scott as he explains how he and his team worked tirelessly to achieve this tremendous success. Even with this success, Scott says they were using an ugly product. Listen as he explains his sentiments. At some point, Scott and his team organized a show to promote the business. He talks about how they made colossal amounts of money from the show and numerous leads. You will need to hear the story in his words to understand. While Scott has no problem hiring from any part of the world, he prefers working with people within the same time zone. He also opts to work with people who speak English. According to him, doing so enhances convenience. Scott says he has both full time employees and others who work under full-time contracts. All of his employees work remotely. Scott reiterates that content marketing is critical not only for his business but for many others. He says has a content team that leverages his thoughts to come up with the right content for his business. He believes that great content is crucial for the success of any business.  References Scott Desgrosseilliers Wicked Reports Blog Wicked Reports Scott Desgrosseilliers

Some of the best referees rarely get noticed. And even if they make the right call, they're likely to suffer abuse from crowds and players alike. With experience officiating over the highest levels of play, Scott Young is a veteran ref who can attest to being sworn at in several foreign languages. As today's guest, we speak to Scott about our great sport and his career as a match official. Scott has more than 30 years of experience as an advisor. Currently he manages around 700 family relationships and more than $1.5 billion in assets. My Key Takeaway: To create an experience that makes clients feel like they’re your only client: Identify your “bread and butter client,” meaning the people to whom you can bring the most value over time. Focus your pitch and your value proposition on what Scott calls “the soft side of retirement” — the things clients and prospects will be retiring to, not just their raw numbers. Challenge yourself and your team to excel. Scott channels his competitive energy into running a world-class business. You need to find a similar motivation and drive to deliver “hall of fame” service and keep growing. Also Learn: 1. How Scott targets a local company niche with on-site workshops that demonstrate his expertise and lay the foundations for strong relationships. 2. How Scott leverages his team of 16 to support him and personalize the relationship building touches that keep his clients connected to the business. 3. What Scott does to build his brand and play an active role in his community so that he has a noticeable, positive presence.

To Scott Osborn, Rochester native, the acquisition of Fox Run Vineyards was the natural culmination of his passion for wine and commitment to the industry. The son of two professors, Osborn’s first interest was international politics. Attending the Friends World College, a unique university with campuses all over the globe, he studied in Kenya, India, Thailand, Japan, and England. He went into real estate development in 1974, later opening an office in Lake County California, a well-known viticulture area. The move there proved to be fortuitous; living so close to the vines Osborn became interested in wine. In 1980 he took his first job at Konocti Winery labeling bottles. He then went on to work at Firestone Vineyards, Zaca Mesa, and Byron Winery in Santa Barbara. In 1984 During his time at Byron he came back to visit family and during a wine tasting trip around Seneca Lake tasted a Wagner Vineyards 1982 Barrel-aged Chardonnay. It was his first experience with a brilliant cool climate wine and he realized that this was where he wanted to make wines and ultimately own his own vineyard and winery. In 1985, there were not a lot of winemaking jobs available so he began working for a wine distributor and then went on to be General Manager of Pindar Vineyards on Long Island. In 1993, Fox Run became available and in partnership with Andy Hale, they purchased it. Since the purchase of the winery in 1994, he has resided in the beautifully renovated farmhouse originally built on the property in 1870. Initially assuming the responsibilities of winemaking, along with the myriad tasks of management, speaking engagements, and travel, he chose to hire a full-time winemaker. His selection of Peter Bell in June of 1995 satisfied his desire to engage the most gifted winemaker in the Finger Lakes region. Their shared vision for quality wine production has freed Osborn to the task of managing the winery and planning for its future. He regularly participates in wine judgings, panel discussions, and symposiums dealing with the many challenges of an increasingly sophisticated appellation. On Christmas day of 1998 three days after turning 50, Scott married long time sweetheart Ruth Worden, and in 2012, Ruth’s sister Kathy and her husband Albert became partners and now Fox Run is a family-owned winery. The highly successful working relationship between Scott, Peter, and Vineyard manager John Kaiser has resulted in spectacular grapes, wines, and successful introductions of State-of-the-Art vineyard practices, keeping Fox Run Vineyards on the cutting edge of grape growing and winemaking. Scott is constantly working to improve our environmental impact and has received the Lake Friendly Farm designation from Yates County Soil and Water Conservation. This award is given to farms whose farming practices do not negatively impact the water quality of Seneca Lake. He also installed a 151-Kilowatt solar system which provides 100% of the electrical needs for the winery, tasting room, and café. They have reduced their herbicide and pesticide use and are replacing them with organic and biological sprays that are less impactful on the environment. He has been President of the Seneca Lake Wine Trail two times and a founding member and past President of Finger Lakes Wine Alliance, he is a founding member of the New York Wine Industry Association, which was founded in 2009 to represent the Wine Industry to educate legislators in Albany on issues that will impact our wineries and vineyards here in New York State. He was elected by his peers in the NY wine industry and is now the New York representative on the Board of Wine America, which is the national advocacy organization for the American Wine Industry in Washington DC. In this episode of Destination on the Left, Scott Osborn, owner of Fox Run Vineyards, joins us to talk about tourism from the perspective of a business owner. He discusses the new challenges and opportunities presented to wineries in the Finger Lakes, and he explains how tourism has impacted the wine business. What You Will Learn in This Episode: Scott’s perspective on tourism as a business owner How tourism has affected the wine business in the Finger Lakes region How Scott helped create an allure for Finger Lakes wine How Scott uses travel patterns to attract visitors in the highly competitive Seneca Lake area What Scott has done to make Fox Run Vineyards stand out from the crowd How collaboration has played a major role in growing the Finger Lakes wine industry How Scott has been able to garner attention from Europeans Tourism in the Wine Business Scott Osborn is the owner of Fox Run Vineyards, a family-owned winery on Seneca Lake in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. As a business owner in a hot destination, Scott has to operate his winery with the big picture in mind. For instance, in his market, the average wine tasting visitor makes five stops. So, Scott and his team crafted Fox Run’s experiences around this pattern and other trends that travelers follow. But these patterns are constantly changing, which presents new opportunities and new challenges. In the latest episode of Destination on the Left Scott joins us to discuss the impact of tourism on his industry and he talks about tourism from a business owner’s perspective. New Trends, New Challenges With some of the world’s most renowned vineyards located in California, many people develop a preconceived notion about what wine should taste like. But every region has a different style and the cool-climate wines of New York provide an entirely different experience. The Seneca Lake winemakers had to work together to get the word out about their region and their labels, and they are still doing it. But now there are breweries, cideries, and distilleries competing for traveler time and dollars as well. So, getting tourists to come to the Finger Lakes and make wine tasting a priority is a much larger challenge than ever before. When Scott Osborn started Fox Run Vineyards, there were about twenty wineries on Seneca Lake. Now, there are over one hundred producing quality and consistency that is appreciated by connoisseurs around the world. It has made it extremely difficult to stand out from the crowd and differentiate Fox Run from other wineries in the region. It’s All About the Experience In our last episode with Paul Soseman, we discussed the concept of experiential marketing in tourism. But it doesn’t always have to be labeled as such. Scott Osborn recognized the opportunity to strike an emotional reaction in his audience; not by forcing a clever campaign on them, but by inviting them to experience a different universe. He built the largest sculpture on Seneca Lake in the form of a massive gate. It draws attention from the main road into town, and when they cross the entrance, they are teleported into a new realm. Blackstone Minerals have been working hard on the Ta Khoa Nickel project since Scott Williamson had the last Coffee with Samso.  I have always liked nickel and I still think that the good times are not here yet.  What Scott and his team are trying to define is a Nickel Sulphide deposit that will be payable to mine.  As in the property investment strategies, location is the most important component which will determine the ingredients within the rock types.  I do feel that Blackstone Minerals are in the right address and the recent drilling proves that they are taping some good mantle materials. Form a geological point of view, these are critical components.  I do agree that there may be some sovereign issues but from what I am hearing, these are not creating any barriers.  As in these developing countries in Asia, economic development is of the utmost importance.  I have many business associates who tell me that Vietnam is no longer a sleepy place. Things are booming and the labour costs are no longer as they were in the past.  I am not saying that they are Western standards but they are definitely signs of economic growth. I have always enjoyed my conversation with Scott and this is another great conversation as we learn of the discovery of Platinum, Palladium and Gold discovery in their recent exploration.  Mobilisation of multiple rigs to the site is a great sign that money is going into the ground. It is a great update on Blackstone Minerals and their journey to develop the Ta Khoa Nickel Project.

Hire feasibility study consultants and appraisers to help along the way.  But on the front end, to be able to identify opportunities there, it’s a little more education to know and understand what that looks like.” – Scott Meyers “I think patience along the way leads to my next point.  It takes longer for anybody that’s going out from scratch to our students from the get-go to find a facility that may meet their investment criteria. It makes sense as a value and opportunity.  It may take six to 12 months before they identify and close on a project.” – Scott Meyers “When you run out of cash, you need to be open to partners. 141: How to Take Flight in Your Niche and Dominate It with Scott’s Cheap Flights Founder, Scott Keyes

Dave Lukas, The Misfit Entrepreneur_Breakthrough Entrepreneurship

This week’s Misfit Entrepreneur is Scott Keyes. Scott’s just your every day, run of the mill guy who turned a hobby of finding cheap plane tickets into a multi-million dollar business in less than 2 years. As he would say it, Scott’s Cheap Flights was more an accidental business and he started out as more of an accidental entrepreneur. A misfit if you will. Over the last 5 years, the business has grown to service hundreds of thousands around the world, help save clients millions of dollars on their flight purchases, and has been featured everywhere from CNBC to Virgin, Conde Naste, and Time Magazine. Scott has learned a lot about finding a niche and cultivating a great business from it and that is one of the things I’m most excited to explore with him in this episode. www.ScottsCheapFlights.com As Scott says, he’s an accidental entrepreneur. He ended up where he is completely by accident. The way it came about happened after he graduated college and moved to DC. He had a degree in political science and loved to write. He became a political journalist. There wasn’t much money in it, but Scott wanted to travel and needed to find a way to fund it. So, he got into the world of travel hacking. He got really good at it over the course of a couple of years. It all culminated when in 2013, he got the best deal he had ever gotten – a ticket from New York to Milan for just over $100. When he got back from his trip, word had spread amongst some of his friends and co-workers and they started asking him to share deals with them when he found them. He started an email list to send out deals he found to his friends and co-workers. Over the next year, he did as a hobby, but the subscribers started telling other subscribers and they told others and so on. By 2015, it had grown to over 5000 subscribers. At this point, there started to be some costs involved. In August 2015, Scott relaunched as a “freemium service” in which there is still a free signup, but also a paid sign up with more content and perks. Nowadays, Scott’s Cheap Flights has over 1.5 million subscribers. When you look back on how you got to this point, what is your best advice on how to discover a profitable niche and uncover opportunities under your nose? Don’t quit your day job overnight. Whatever you start, do it part time and split time. Build things on a small budget – don’t spend a bunch of money up front. Test things out for a little while before going all in on a strategy or offering. You must find something that brings real value and that people will actually pay for (and not just support you) If people are willing to pay for something, they value it and others will too. The main thing is to use micro-thinking. Try different ideas over smaller periods to see what is getting traction. But, be ruthless in cutting out the things that don’t show promise. At the 16 min mark, Scott tells us how SCF works… They are not a travel agency. What Scott and his teams do is spend every moment of the day searching for cheap flights. Really good deals pop up and don’t last long. Sometimes they are only available for 4-5 hours. They then alert subscribers, so they can get them before they disappear. Scott uses an example of roundtrip flights to New Zealand for under $400. As Scott says, what SCF is, is an early detection system to find the diamonds in the rough. At the 19 min mark, Scott talks about how the business is setup and the model (this is a great model that you could follow in your niche). There is a free subscription in which subscribers get access to 1 out of every 3 deals by “region” that SCF finds. For a few dollars month, Premium subscribers get access to all deals and can select by “airport” so they can be more specific to their needs. Lastly, Premium subscribers get their emails first and free get them 30 mins later. Scott loves the freemium model. In today’s age, people are skeptical. It is so much better to give them a way to show them the value you can create and how you generate results for them. It relieves pressure and creates more devoted clients. What have you learned about building a business in going from 1 man with a hobby to having employees throughout the world and serving millions? Learning never ends! There is a point in the growth of a company, around 8-10 employees where what you do shifts from the core product of the company to leading people and working to get the best out of them. There is a transition that happens and has to happen as a leader and your skill set will have to change to a focus on people and strategy. Another challenge, especially with remote employees is finding ways to connect them and build a strong team culture. As a leader with remote employees, you must have a special focus there. Are there any systems or specific strategies you’ve used for remote employees that work really well? SCF grew at a pace of “one employee at a time” and they didn’t take the time so much to build out the systems to communicate well across a larger group which caused some challenges. People in the company didn’t know what was happening in the company. Its’ more important to over-communicate…. They found that putting in a system of having regular meetings, communicating through Slack, doing check-ins with team members throughout each quarter, getting feedback, and being genuinely interested in how they can make their team’s lives better. What have you learned about building and cultivating a subscriber list and how did you transition from free to paid? Scott was terrified taking people from free to paid. He had seen the backlash that customers had when things like newspapers stared charging for online access, etc. The psychology of it is interesting. It seems to be much harder to get someone to pay $1 for something they used to get for free than it is to get someone to pay $2 for something they used to pay $1 for. Even though, it is still $1 more, people don’t see it the same. The shift seems monumental. Being conscious of this is really important and why the freemium model is a good way to go. It removes the barriers to entry. As he moved from free to paid, he gave all subscribers the premium subscription for the first month and gave them the choice of keeping it for free or getting a scaled down version with less features. This also helped created FOMO – fear of missing out He set an extremely low price point, a few dollars a month. It was not so much about profit in the beginning, but to see if people are willing to pull out their wallets. At the 36 min mark, we have a great discussion on value and what that means to clients. What are some tips on cultivating and taking care of subscribers on your list? Be very respectful of people’s inboxes. Invest in customer support and be very responsive – create a tribe of evangelists for you. Imagine what people will think if you are responded in minutes to clients, not days. Don’t buy lists to email to – this is huge mistake that can get you blacklisted Your subscribers are your best referral channel – more than paid search or advertising. Treat them well and they will treat you well. There are no short cuts, things have to happen organically At the 43 min mark, Scott answers the question, “What are some tips on how to find deeply discounted flight deals?” There is a secret sauce which is searching for flights 20 hours a day. First, you want to cross the ocean as cheap as you can, then worry about getting to your final destination. For example, book Chicago to Athens when going to Santorini and then get a cheap flight from Athens to Santorini Change the way you look at flight shopping…invert it Most start by picking where they want to go, then what dates they want to go, and lastly, they look at the prices. Look at price first to see where there are cheap flights right now. You can do it on Google Alerts, Kayak Explore, and a number of places. It is much easier to find good deal this way. Find the price and build the trip around that. If you find a really good fare, it won’t last long. You have to be able to make a decision quickly. A little trick is the 24 hour rule. When you book a flight directly with an airline, you can cancel the flight within 24 hours without issue or penalty. So, you can lock in a price for 24 hours and give yourself time to decide.   Best Quote: We are terrible predictors of our own career path. Be open and humble about where your career path can and will go.   Scott's Misfit 3: We are terrible predictors of our own career path. Be open and humble about where your career path can and will go. Beware of golden handcuffs. You don’t have to stay in a job forever. Go to conveyer belt sushi places for the price, but order from the menu for the fresh stuff. It’s the same price.

Hey, kevin. Hey, how are you? I'm doing great. How are you doing today? I'm doing well. Thank you. You're going to be doing a lot better in a second. When I start talking about what has happened with your show this week. Okay. So let's go back talk about we'll do a little recap of what we did last week. I've got some suggestions before it gets suggestions, though. I do wanna talk about what happened which you don't know about. So first of all last week. What we talked about was I gave you homework. I wanted you to write a detailed description, and I wanted you to come up with a tag. And I wanted you to get me some hashtags that we could use for Nautilus social media for tagging the show. You did not send me the. The tag yet. Which is okay. I just hold on. I took with you wrote. You sent me a paragraph, and actually I'm going to pull that up to and that way we can read your paragraph than I'll I'll explain what I changed a little bit. And actually, it's any of these kind of things and this is an important point. Should be looked at as a living document. It shouldn't be the kind of thing that you go. 00:01:53 Yup. I did it done. You know what I mean? Right. That's where we run into trouble. So here's what you wrote your description that we were adding as they showed description, not an individual episode. It said there was a rich history of tabletop gaming and in the Kevin long show. Kevin and his guest talk about all the additions of dungeons and dragons in some of the shows Kevin builds characters after reading the complete handbook and other weeks, he talks about character concepts and other story outlines not bad, not bad. I made some tweaks to it. Basically what I? I did do it is. I wanted it to flow a little bit better. I also wanted to get a well, let me read it. I got a couple of things out of there that were unnecessary words, necessarily language. So that we can actually make it read a little bit better and add a little bit more to it. And in fact, even reading it now, I want to add a couple of things that we could do later. So here's your description. There is a rich history of tabletop gaming and on the Kevin long show. Kevin and his guests talk about all the additions of dungeons and dragons, Kevin and his guests build characters after reading the complete handbook talk about character concepts and discuss various story outlines. It's it's a little more defined like it more to work from what I want to add as I was reading it. I was Kevin and his guests twice. I'm going to change that I also wanna get in some of our keywords. Now. 00:03:18 This is where we went into the hashtags, and you came up with four now where did you find those? I I don't. I think I typed in the right address that you gave me, but I typed in hashtag of fi. And it brought me to like a little huddle. Like a bid me where I in dungeons and dragons in. That's what gave me right? You did you were in this place. I'm sure okay. So here's what you missed. And this is something that is good to know. Because is probably because I've done it enough that I figured out. Oh, don't forget this part of it. You typed in dungeons and dragons and did search in your hashtags. You did not write dungeons and dragons guess what word probably needs to be there, dungeons and dragons, right? So so the other thing, and this is the part that that I figured out a while ago because I wasn't paying attention. I was like, oh, I want to do dungeons and dragons, boom, here's what I got defy E D, R, PG and tabletop. And then I'm like, wait a minute. Each of those should type in and see what it gets because what if something is bigger. Right. So I went through all the different iterations. And here's what I came up with going off of what you had. Oh, what you had those weren't the ones you gave me you gave me five eighty dice five fantasy and gaming. 00:04:48 All excellent. I added to that deity five eight dungeons and dragons DND RPG and tabletop and the way I came about those was by typing in like, I typed in DND, right? I got some different ones. I typed in RPG was terrible. It just gave you like Asian letters didn't really do it. But typing in five AD and defy it gave me a couple of different things. Wonderful. So now, we have eight in fact, let's see if I have any others. On here. I did put dragon magazine because that is actually another potential one. I think that's the only one I added. So we have nine different tags. We can use those went in tags and keywords on Lipson. But Kevin those are not those are not really valuable. I tunes doesn't use tag tag tags and keywords what they're valuable for. Is. You wanna have that list? And when you do your social media throughout the week to promote this episode you want to use those hash tax. So we came up with your description. We came up with a good set of hashtags a solid set of hashtags. Okay today. I posted an episode. It was of your your Monday. I can't think of the name because I'm drawing a blank as it Monday. Magic monday. I posted magic Monday today, and do you mind to be giving how many downloads you get on an episode? No. That'd be an easing. Okay. We'll get there. 00:06:28 So I posted a magic Monday today and on this episode. I did these things I not only changed your description this week and updated it an added those tags. On the description this week when I posted I added those to the specific episode. I also took something you said in your description and made that your subtitle. So now on every episode, we publish your subtitle says Kevin and his guests talk all about the additions of dungeons and dragons, so now dungeons and dragons hits as a single word as multiple words if somebody is searching for it shows up as an important word to Google. So now Google knows this show is about dungeons and dragons, so we eat. Okay. So now, we are in a much better place. We've niche down like we talked about we've gotten those keywords in here. And the other thing I did then was the stuff that was my part of this. So I went in to your to the settings. And I made sure you were updated on. Various platforms, and guess what? I found. Well, I dropped. I dropped the ball. So I did not have in here some of the different things. So I added your Facebook. This is in settings on Lipson, you if you go to settings you can put in keywords and Email and all that stuff. I put in the Facebook URL, I put in your Twitter handle what I found was you were not posting too. 00:08:08 I put an I tunes to even though it was posting the I tunes. I put in that address goes faster, you were not posting to tune in radio. You are not posting to Stitcher. You're not posting to Google play or Google podcasts or Spotify. You are now. So I went through and I made sure every one of those even though technically they don't add up too much for most shows you're there now or you will be in the next couple of days. Those even though you think well if apple is ninety five percent of the downloads. Why do I need to be on all of them? You do you need that all of them? Because what if your show what if the people that listen to tune in radio or totally into your dungeons and dragons show, and you get four hundred dollars on that on tune in radio. And I tunes gets you twenty. We don't know. So the point is for everybody making podcasts out there get him in every channel you can unless that channel is paying you have Stitcher says we want you to be exclusive. And here's a bunch of money to do it. Heck? Yeah. I'll be exclusive. But if they haven't done that. Why would you stay with one put it everywhere? Get it where the customer is getting in front of them that was something I hadn't done it's done. Now, let's get into the thing. You really want to hear about town stew? 00:09:28 Today. We post this episode right on average when we post a new episode you get about twenty downloads of that particular like that day. Okay. I'm not going by particular episode. I'm going by downloads on your feet. Okay. This is an important thing to clarify because the number. I'm going to give you is. Not today's episode did this number. It's your feed to this number today. And if you look at your feed average, it's it's you know, a couple of day, and then I'll post road you'll get like twenty okay? Which you and I have been happy with so far. We're like, hey, why not it's twenty people urge you that's pretty rock and great, right? Yeah. Okay today. I edit those keywords I updated the description, I added into those other things, but that's not live yet. So the only one that was really live was I tunes you had one hundred downloads today. Wow. And it's only one o'clock Austin, Chicago. So yeah, man, I think it had an effect will find out tomorrow. If it right. If it continues if you if we start seeing that. Everyday. Let's say it goes up to twenty a day would we're not posting something guess what those little tweaks had an effect. And if they didn't I'll eat my hat because I'm telling you. I know it did. Right. So there you go. We are. We are on our way to building audience now before we move into the next thing. 00:11:04 Okay. I want to ask one thing. Yeah. On the show. I like to get whatever question you have before start giving out assignments. So what kind of questions do you have the question today is going to be how do we get more involved with our audience, and and the new media lab, you talked about engaging your audience, and I want to know how to be better at here's the topic. We have this week. Let's do it because I know how to engage the shows that I'm listening to on social. Oh media. I just don't know how to get people to engage Mike show. Excellent. Oh, Kevin you made by day. What my assignment is this week ties into this pervert? Okay. So we're gonna jump ahead from like normally what the idea of the show was was I was gonna help through these little building walks to try to help make your show a brand and build it up. Right. And after we talked last week, I thought okay. Well, these were some really basic things getting those those notes, right and everything getting the tags. Then I thought well, you wanna see more motion. Even though I think what we had today was pretty darn good motion five times. We just went up by five hundred percent. That's good. I wanna see it keep going. So you're right engagement is a keyed everything. Now, this is going to be a slower burn. But we're going to try something K. So first of all, let's go over what social media platforms. You have the show on what do you have? 00:12:41 I'm on. I do Facebook and Twitter are the ones that I most active on, but I do have an Instagram account. Okay. And the Instagram account is that four swamp. It is at four the come long show. Or is it your personal? It's a personal. It's a personal. Okay. Let's take that one off the table. Okay. That's not what we need to use. Although I would suggest thinking about at some point getting an Instagram that is the Kevin long show. Okay, instagram. Okay. Here's why with these different platforms. If you have a Kevin long show Instagram when we post something you can post like seventeen hashtags, and it's not weird. Okay. And this is something that I've said before to people, and I get brushback. I don't get brushback from people that actually know the social media kind of etiquette and rules. I get it for people that are like, no, it doesn't really matter. Or no, I do it this way. We'll great. There are no hard and fast rules. But there are some things that do make a difference. So first of all, let's let's talk about these Instagram you could do up to seventeen hashtags there is a trick to get more. But if you have seventeen good hashtags you're off to the races. Okay. When you're using Instagram, and let's just talk about that for a second. Then we'll move onto what matters to you Instagram is a visual medium. So you want to make sure you take like the artwork from the show if you have some if you don't let's start. We'll talk about that on another episode. Kevin k-. 00:14:20 If you if you have behind the scenes pictures, or like in your case, you do gaming throughout the week. Take pictures of like your books. Take pictures of your dice take pictures of things related to DND, even if it's a page out of the book or a quote out of one of the books, or when you do your monster of the week or magic Monday, you take a picture of that from the book and you posted on Instagram and you're like, hey, it's the bag holding. That's what we're talking about this week that works beautifully oppose hashtags or things people are looking for. And you put it a good amount of them. And it can be like like I do things when I post because I'm kind of a coffee addict, I take pictures for Instagram where I'm holding a coffee Cup, and I'm like podcasting today. And I'll bet hashtag podcast podcasters, Chicago podcasting media new media coffee coffee addict. Like all these things. And you'd be surprised I have a huge amount of followers that are like these coffee bloggers IB huge amount that are podcasters like because I use those hashtags it gets noticed. Okay. But you don't do Instagram yet. So we're not gonna worry about that for this week. What I want you to do is. We're going to do a Facebook and a Twitter strategy. Okay. You wanna put the pick those you've got those nine hashtags right right now on on Facebook. I know they take hashtags, but it's actually been tracked. If you read some of these sources about social media about you know, what works and what dozen this hashtags don't really work on Facebook. In fact, the the the post without hashtags tend to do a little bit better the ones with I don't know why it makes. 00:16:12 When you click on the activity, tag and type in listening to gaming with Scott are the this old good. So so it's just like I said if you can be everywhere with your podcast feel free to use hashtags everywhere with this. Okay. All good stuff. And when you say, you're listening to gaming Lescot. That's an excellent thing. I wish everybody did that for every show there listened to because it sells people where you are. It might entice them to listen, I know that I've clicked on shows when I've seen that pop up. So that's an excellent practice from a personal standpoint. And also from your show because it says Kevin long is listening to me. What Scott anyone that follows? You is going to see that be like a look, there's another gaming podcast. This is cool. You want to build it like reciprocity between the podcasts. And if you mentioned a podcast, make sure you tag them put an at gaming with Scott when we do this. We need. Make sure we put hey gaming at giving. What Scott we talked about you on today's show. Right. Okay. So I've got thoughts here with with Twitter with Twitter you wanna use no more than two maybe three hashtags. I know you can use more it starts to cluttering people. Don't look at them. Sometimes when it has too much starts to look like a bought. Okay. So if you have to hash dad's, you're in good shape. Now, you have nine hashtags to work with what that should mean to you is, hey, every time I post maybe I wanna switch up those hashtags right guy and easy way to do. 00:17:48 Do. It is to use a an app called tweet deck where you can go in you sign in you've got your Twitter account when you you can go in and say, here's what I want the tweet to say, here's the image. I wanna use with always use an image on Twitter if tax people go right past it. Okay. So they they see the image. They read the thing. On tweet deck. You can say you can schedule it. So now, you can say, you know, what I wanna make sure that my show is hitting on Tuesday. I wanna make sure that that between seven AM and noone like once on our a tweet goes out. That says, hey, we've got to do episode today. You can send the same tweet all five times. Let's say you're doing five on that day. Okay. And it said the same tweet just change the hash tags on each of them or you can change your verbiage a little bit. So it's a little bit more interesting. If if you're doing like, the the bag of holding maybe there's a couple of different images of bags of holding or images that would be kinda cool that you'd be like, yeah, I could put this on air it or even the the show logo for one of them changing it up a little bit. You don't have to do twenty tweets a day. Okay. But the day launches maybe five would be really good. 00:19:08 Okay. The other thing you can do that. Let's say as we're starting. In fact, we will do it this way for this week do five on the date launches you had a magic Monday happened today. Figure out five tweets. Okay. And space out like once an hour. Then we can get into timing. And all that another time. I don't care what it is right now five tweets different hashtags, use them up. Okay. And if you wanna do if you more you can keep in mind that a tweet has a twenty minute lifespan at best. So don't worry that. Oh my gosh. I'm tweeting too much the person looking at the tweets unless they're only looking at your feed your going to go away. They're not gonna care that. You're tweeting every hour, right? Make sense. So let's start with Twitter with that. And then said another thing today is is Monday your show hit today. So setup five tweets I want you to do the exact same thing on Thursday with the same show. But now put ice e or I see why am I in case you missed it in all caps. Why do it with the hashtag? And put that I so it's in case you missed it. I had a new show boasts new magic Monday posted on Monday. Check it out or we did a magic Monday about blank today. Check it out and then use your hashtags. So getting your doubling up you're getting double the hit. And it is a people that you have this show out there and what it's about. 00:20:46 Okay. So that's one thing. We'll try that. You're talking maximum of of or a minimum of ten tweets over the course of between now. And next Monday. Let's see what happens. And if you're like, man, I can't do that. Today set them for tomorrow tomorrow and Thursday. Okay. That was good for the regular Kevin long show. Do it. What do we post on Wednesday Thursday? So do I'm gonna switch it up on your man. Okay. Do either today or tomorrow for Thursday do five for the Kevin long show on Friday? Do in case you missed it for magic Monday and on Monday of next week do five in case you missed it for the Kevin long show. Okay. Let's see if these numbers change now Facebook this goes back to your question. Yeah. Finally, Mr long-winded got back to the question. You ask about engagement? So one way to do it or to try, and you may get some you may not. But on your Facebook page. We posted new episode today. Make sure you post a link to it. But you wanna say something? Engage as anybody used this. What what was the magic Monday today? Let's go look and see. One that hit today was the deck of many things are so is there a question related to the Decca many things that you could ask is. Against snow. So ask a question or say, you know, magic Monday deck of many things discussion threat, and then then put a description underneath it. That says like like, let's talk about the Decca many things. And then asked your questions what experience if you guys had what was the best time you used it or whatever it is. 00:22:33 Okay. And hopefully, you'll get somebody. That'll right now, here's the key. With all of that. You're you're chumming the water by saying, hey, I want you to talk to me as soon as somebody talks to you make sure it doesn't have to be in that minute. But before you go to bed at night. Make sure that every interaction has had a reaction from say something back engage with them. Get them in conversation. Okay. Okay. You may or may not get any. That's okay. You gotta keep doing it. You wanna know how those shows get interaction? This is exactly how they get. Interaction. Perfect. I have a lot more to say about how to been late all of this. But for now, I think that gives you a good solid thing to work from your homework is do those tweets and make a thread for this episode gets conversation going. Okay. Cool. Sounds great any other questions. Kevin not at the moment. All right. Why hope this is working for people? I hope they're getting some good information. Like, I said, the creators lab is a way more casual discussion. I try to come in with an idea that I wanna share a homework I wanna share and Kevin tries to come in with a question. I hope it's helping and I I hope it's going to help you Kevin because I'm telling you jumping up to one hundred downloads today that was shocking to me. So let's hope that rain continues. 00:24:05 Yes, for sure why don't you give your social media? You can find us on Facebook just type in the Kevin long show. And you can find us on Twitter at the swamp pit great. And he will have a thread for the episodes. You can get in conversation about this episode, and please do and Kevin I'm going to give you one more tip before I go. Yeah. And this is something that when I said, give your social media, you should have done, and I wanna make it. So that it's ingrained in you. And it should also be on your your show notes, which it's not give your Email K. So make sure you give your Email whenever you can. Because a lot of people even though you say, here's my Twitter. Here's my Instagram. Here's my Facebook. Here's my YouTube channel a lot of people engage through Email. So give it and make sure it's in your show notes, and actually your homework. Their last thing is text me or tweet me or. Message me with your Email, and I'll put it on your show notes going forward. Sweet. So what's your Email? Kevin you can Email us at the Kevin long show at gmaiLcom perfect city. We're gonna we're gonna get you in good habits. And I can't wait to see where this goes. Wouldn't it be cool? If we actually made this show rock the house that would be great. I think it can. I love the show. 00:25:29 All right. Kevin. Thank you so much and everybody else we will talk to you on Thursday with the next episode of new media lab. I hope you enjoyed this last one with Brent hand. So this week's guest is Andrea Klender. Andrea is awesome. She does a thing where she's your podcast, boss. I've been interviewed. Martha I got interviewed by her at a women in podcast festival. She was on the SIM G podcast festival out at blue-box. Cafe. She is really fantastic has wonderful ideas. And. You're probably gonna want to listen to her show in conjunction with this show as soon as you get a load of what she has to say. Scott Smith personally began investing in real estate while he was in graduate school, and his first property was a huge lesson in the importance of asset protection. He also kicked off his legal career in high stakes litigation, giving him a perspective on real estate investing as both the investor protecting his own assets, but also as an attorney who worked to find the weaknesses in people's asset protection. After breaking down the most effective asset protection strategies available, Scott wants to share his expertise and offer these anonymity and protective structures to investors, so he started Royal Legal Solutions in Austin, TX. What you'll learn about in this episode: How Scott Smith paid for law school and graduated with zero debt thanks to real estate investment, compared with most students who graduate $250,000 or more in debt The surprisingly small amount you need to have in equity before you need to seriously consider steps to protect your assets that go beyond the basics, like insurance and LLCs The importance of finding people to partner with who are experts in various areas of real estate investing as advisors Why it's important to pay attention when new opportunities present themselves for building wealth and adding value Ways you can profit by helping people see what they're doing wrong and showing them the way to correct the problem Why asset protection is so important for real estate investors and how you can save big by protecting your assets sooner rather than later Why insurance is not enough to protect your assets and what you need to do instead The one challenge Scott struggled with early on in investing and why taking action is, even small action, is so critical The danger of analysis paralysis and how having a mentor can sometimes help people break out of that state of chronic inaction Why it's important to break away from the notion that you have to be perfect in your investments or other areas of your life to be successful in real estate Why you don't have to know everything before you begin in real estate investing The reason Scott believes anonymity is so important for protecting your assets What Scott means when he says, “If you can win the morning, you win your day” Resources: SmartRealEstateCoachPodcast.com/RoyalLegalSolutions SmartRealEstateCoachPodcast.com/webinar SmartRealEstateCoachPodcast.com/termsbook SmartRealEstateCoachPodcast.com/ebook SmartRealEstateCoachPodcast.com/QLS

This is the Longevity Now All-Stars mashup show, featuring six guests doing lightning round questions. I've been attending the Longevity Now Conference in Anaheim for years and have used it as a home base to record 10 of my 150 episodes over the past two years. In fact, a few of my very first shows were recorded there in 2016. The LNC is one of the most well-attended health and wellness conferences in the world, and with good reason. You'd be hard-pressed to find a more diverse and brilliant group of people. I've interviewed many of the esteemed speakers, vendors, and even a couple attendees. Scott discusses his 83-mile ultramarathon, free climbing, and what life lesson he learned from Megadeth. Many runners aim to complete a 10k, half-marathon, or maybe even a marathon Others have the goal of to complete a triathlon, even an Ironman. For Scott Drum, a two-time state champion and collegiate runner, the ultimate goal was to do something that nobody had ever accomplished (or even tried before): consecutively run Michigan’s National Lakeshore trail and then the Isle Royale National Park trail, covering a total of 83.5 miles or 134.4 kilometers. Scott Drum completed this feat in just over 24 hours, including the time he spent in a float plane flying from one park to the other. Starting this fall, Scott will start his next big challenge: running 25 "classic" mountain adventure trails across North America and then using the data gathered by his wearable technology to write an evidenced-based book about his experience. My guest today is Scott Meyers, the expert behind Self-Storage Academy and Self-Storage Investing. These two businesses are the crux of Scott's efforts to teach people how to make money in the self-storage industry. We discuss the types of self-storage facilities and how an owner can find the best fit for them. Self-storage is a ripe industry for investment opportunities. It is the best of both worlds, real estate, and retail. Scott expands on the idea that self-storage facilities are often treated as businesses to increase their value. Modern Combat & Survival | Tactical Firearms | Urban Survival | Close Quarters Combat Training

It's a strange FBI statistic about "deadly crime"... 10% of victims shot with a firearm die from their wounds. But a whopping 30% of victims STABBED with a knife end up dying! Now that's not to say that a knife is a better weapon for personal protection. I mean, a bullet at least has the chance for a "one-shot stop", while a knife is a long, slow (very messy) process of stab after stab while you wait for your attacker to bleed out. However, the stats DO reveal that having a knife on you - at least as a back-up - can be enough to save your life when attacked. So in this week's podcast episode, I asked "close-quarters knife-fighting" expert, Scott Babb, to share his unique take on how to used an edged weapon against a violent attacker. Here's What You'll Discover In This Week's Episode: Hollywood vs. "the street":  What most people get wrong, wrong, WRONG about how to defend yourself with a blade!  Prison knife-fights! What Scott discovered after watching hours of life-or-death attacks in America's most brutal penitentiaries! WHAT knife to carry (and how to carry it!) for rapid deployment! The best areas of the body to target with your knife that will ensure the fight ends... FAST! A super simple close-quarters knife-fighting training drill to help get you on your way to master your weapon! I've become a big fan of Scott's training the moment I saw his unique approach and training methods! I know you're going to want to listen to this podcast a few times through. And remember...you can get all the links to these items AND a "cheat sheet" in this week's Show Notes at www.MCSMagazine.com/195!

If you take the time to sit down and get clear on the direction of your life, you may find that growing a business for yourself and your family will afford you the flexibility and time to pursue hobbies, to travel, to spend time with the people you love—and build wealth in the process. More often than not, time invested in reflection is what ultimately inspires action among aspiring multifamily investors. Scott Price and his wife Karen run Bonvolo Real Estate Investments. They have been investors since 2003, owning and managing multifamily, office, retail and land properties across multiple markets in Washington state. From 2003 through 2007, Scott worked as a broker and earned Seattle Magazine's Best in Client Satisfaction Award three times before returning to his career in project management. He has steadily grown his real estate portfolio while working full-time at Microsoft, but now he is quitting his W-2 job to focus on Bonvolo full time! Scott sits down with me to share the experience that distracted him from pursing real estate after college and how the desire for flexibility ultimately brought him back. He explains why he went straight to multifamily as an investment strategy, how he was able to overcome his inexperience, and the business plan for his first 29-unit property. On today’s episode of Just the Tips, Dean and I welcome Scott Gerber, a man who has launched incredible projects that have made a huge difference for companies. He’s CEO of The Community Company, an organization that builds and manages community-driven programs for media companies and global brands, and a founder of the YEC organization for young entrepreneurs. His books, Superconnector and Never Get a “Real” Job have landed him on all the major news outlets. But, today actually isn’t about credentials and all of that, today we talk with him about building true, genuine relationships. We’ve all had that experience of “networking” where afterward you feel like you need to be doused with disinfectant. What Scott is so good at, and what we talk about on today’s show, is really creating relationships with people that are mutually beneficial. If you want to get out there, but you don’t want to “network,” this is the episode for you. More isn’t necessarily better when it comes to relationships We’re constantly bombarded with the idea that more is better, it’s important to know everyone, etc. But as Scott says on this episode of Just the Tips, “the reality is pretty clear: your inner circle should be on the smaller side.” And because you can then go deeper with that smaller set of people than you could with a wider net, you’re building actually meaningful relationships. If you spend a little more empathy, a little more time on those relationships, you’d be better for it, says Scott. This is in contrast to, as he says, “the latest conversion or growth hack b.s. that some blogger wanted to put clickbait around.” It’s a very meaningful perspective, and one you’re going to want to hear. There are no tricks to better networking Learning to build communities and strong relationships is really a mindset shift, Scott says. It’s the equivalent of losing weight: You can either go with fad products that promise you’ll lose weight quickly, or you can change your mindset and your lifestyle to be healthier and keep it off. That’s why Scott is so skeptical of articles that promise “10 tips and tricks to better networking.” He wants to completely move away from the mindset of traditional networking to a new framework. Though he kindly agreed with me that if we changed the name of our show from Just the Tips, “Just the Frameworks” wouldn’t have quite the same ring. Luckily, he still shared some fascinating insights into his framework for building relationships on this week’s episode. The three key traits of any connector Scott holds up the example of the typical, old-school “networking’ mindset, as someone who upon meeting another person, tries to determine how that person can help them. But Scott says you need to flip that, and the only way to do that is to be honest with yourself. And he says there are three key traits of any successful connector. You have to be self-aware, empathetic, and curious. Each of those seems simple enough, but as Scott says, each requires an actual understanding of yourself, and what other people need. And all three have one thing in common. As Scott put it: “You can’t cheat real time.” You have to put in the time to actually understand yourself, develop empathy for others, and spend time asking questions to dive deeper into your relationships. How genuine relationships are great for business It’s so easy to think transactionally when it comes to business relationships: What value can I extract from this other person. But, as Scott says, if you’re thinking about relationships, then you’re looking to either help people or help connect them with people who could help them. And that builds trust and builds an expanding group of people who value you for the interest you took in them, and will now think of you when they hear of something that could help you. As Scott says, he and his business partner are living proof that this approach really works from both a human and a business perspective. And while he’s bucking the trend of offering tips on this week’s episode of Just the Tips, you’re going to want to hear what he has to say. 102: [ASSET PROTECTION] Protect Yourself with Scott Smith

Scott Smith is an Asset Protection attorney and real estate investor with experience in everything to flipping houses to buying notes. Scott specializes on how to make sure you never lose money from lawsuits. Scott wanted to focus his business on giving people the top level of protection possible, without complicating anything or increasing taxes. “Is it possible to have the best of all worlds?” He asked himself. Turns out it is. And that’s how his business was formed. The types of protections offered, and the way people can scale infinitely with their help makes Scott’s law firm the most competitive in the country. Scott has been a real estate investor for 8 years, which is why he exclusively works with real estate investors. Now you don’t have to hunt down a lawyer who might know some things about real estate investing. Because Scott’s law firm is so specialized, not only can he help with any of your real estate investing needs, but his team can help anyone in all 50 states. Don’t worry, we’ll have contact information further down in the show notes. One of the biggest ways to lose money as a real estate investor is holding property in your personal name. Scott explains it like this: “If you’re holding property in your personal name, what you’re really saying is that if anything goes wrong anywhere in your life, you’re ok with someone being able to attack anything and everything that you own.” What Scott focuses on in his law firm is separating the assets from the operations. You should have 2 companies. One that holds your assets, cash, stocks, personal investments, etc. Then the second one is what Scott calls your “Operating Company”. That company handles the actual “business”. It’s the company that manages the hiring of new employees, dealing with contracts, handling your leases, etc. “Lawsuits work because there has to be a connection,” Scott tells us, “between the thing people are complaining about, and the business people are complaining about.” So if all of your operations are going through one company and someone has a problem with it, they can only sue that company. They wouldn’t be able to attack your assets because their relationship is only with the operating company you have. It’s a way to protect what you’ve worked so hard to get. Let’s say you’re flipping in your personal name and you’re hiring all of the contractors yourself, basically acting as the GC. That means that if anyone has a complaint against you, or the property, or anything that extends to insurance liability, that whole property gets locked up if they decide to sue you. Once that property is locked like that, you won’t be able to do anything to it until the law suite is settled. The way to get around that is by setting up your asset company as an LLC. the best place to set it up is in Texas, but there are about 10 other states that make it easy to set up. You can use that company anywhere in the US, just like any other LLC. This is your asset company. Then, from there, you would set up a local LLC for your operations company. This one has to be local because it’s where you’re doing your day to day operations of your real estate investing business. So let’s say you get a contractor and he makes some terrible cabinets for you and you tell him that they’re not good and you’re not going to pay for them. Of course he’s going to be upset, so he decides to sue you. Well, since you hired him through your local shell LLC, he’s not able to attack your personal name or your asset holding company. That means that while the lawsuit is going on, you can still work on that property and get it sold, and all of your assets are safe in the process. Again, this is a great way to protect yourself, your assets, and your business. In your worst case scenario, you wind the LLC down that got sued and then open up another one to act as your operations company. In the end, you might be out court fees and a settlement, but your properties are all protected. Plus, you were still able to conduct business while the court case was happening, meaning you still made money. This is a really efficient way of getting rid of issues like that.

In this episode of the I Love Data Centers podcast, Data Center Patents and Perspectives on Artificial Intelligence, we have Scott Noteboom. Scott is the founder and CEO of LitBit, a company focused on making Artificial Intelligence (AI) a useful and practical tool for companies to leverage on a day to day basis. Scott’s roots are in the data center, having worked for many years starting an ISP, working for an integrated voice and data startup and then joining the likes of Abovenet, Yahoo! and Apple overseeing data center engineering and operations. With a core background in software, his perspective on the industry is unique in that he’s always been working toward developing solutions that will make data centers smarter, and more importantly, communicate with one another intelligently. Hence, his pivot in 2013 toward the AI space and work toward developing an AI specifically for the data center vertical (among many other verticals) makes total sense. Our conversation explores primarily what AI is, and is not, along with some of the practical ways AI is being used today and will be used over the coming years and decades to come. Having accepted the reality that AI will play a large roll in our future as a species, I admire and stand behind Scott’s commitment to educating people on the topic and technology and also doing his part to ensure the technology is used for good. Last year, after racing the AT&T Spartan Stadium race in San Francisco, I took my wife and twin boys to a private screening of (I'm not much of a Hollywood guy). Actually, this wasn't even a movie. It was a documentary, a genre that I really only tap into when my assistant sends me an audio download of some documentary somebody tells me I "must-see" and then I listen to it while I'm walking through the forest and imagine what is going on  from a visual standpoint (as a film nerd, my guest on today's podcast would probably throttle me for this). Anyways, I walked out of the screening incredibly impressed. I laughed, I was inspired, I was on the edge of my seat, my kids were howling with laughter, and my wife loved it. So what did we see exactly? The documentary is called "". It's all about the global obstacle course phenomenon, and in a highly entertaining and funny way, it explores the history of the sport, the psychology behind it, the personalities that drive it, and asks what it says about the world we're living in. Here's the trailer: Director Scott Keneally is my guest on today's show. This self-proclaimed “beta male” has been stuck in the mud since the fall of 2011, when he tackled his first Tough Mudder. Back then, the first-time filmmaker had no idea he’d be making a movie about any of this stuff. He went into it with a simple plan: to suffer and write a story about the suffering. Keneally had previously confessed to things like bedwetting and sweaty pits in places like the New York Times Styles section, and figured the one about training up and tackling a paramilitary assault course would make for funny material. That essay was featured on the cover of his local alt-weekly, but more importantly, while researching the history of the company, he stumbled upon a “Social Network”-style scandal surrounding its origins. He quickly reinvented himself as an investigative journalist, and his story ultimately landed on the cover of Outside. The exposé received widespread media attention, opening doors to a consulting gig with 60 Minutes Sports, a speaking engagement at Stanford Business School and—by kismet or luck—an unlikely new career path as a filmmaker. When he’s not running in mud, Keneally works as a treatment writer for some of the top directors in music videos and commercials. Over the past 15 years, he has collaborated on videos for Rihanna, Madonna, Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus, as well as Paris Hilton’s infamous burger commercial. He has also been known to play didgeridoo with the criminally under-discovered rock band OURS, through which he has toured with Marilyn Manson and recorded on the band’s Rick Rubin-produced record, “Mercy.” He received his B.A. from Boston College (’99) and his M.F.A. from University of San Francisco (’04). He lives on a vineyard in Sonoma County, CA, with his wife and little boy. During my discussion with Scott, you'll discover: -How raves, micro-dosing with LSD, and rebelling against being a preppie turned Scott from wanting to be the president of the United States to instead making music videos and eventually obstacle course racing...[13:45] -The crazy, eccentric man named "Mr. Mouse" who inspired Scott to make the Sufferfests movie... [19:45] -Scott's take on why millions of people are suddenly paying to suffer through ice, fire, electricity, barbed wire, mud and more...[28:20] -The concept of "The Strenuous Life" and why humans are hardwired to want to get out of our comfortable lives...[31:20] -Why a shocking number of people are doing obstacle course racing to get a good profile pic...[35:20] -The intriguing link between the "masculinity crisis" and obstacle course racing...[47:05] -Why you must have some aspect of fear and discomfort in your life...[52:00] -What were the craziest adventures you embarked upon while filming Sufferfest? [59:35] -What Scott thinks is the next "big thing" in OCR...[62:20] -And much more! What is your artistic motivation? Has it always been the same, or has it changed? Artist Scott Conary would say that it has changed over the years. He describes a time when his artwork and his career came from a different place of motivation, that was before his daughter was born. Once she came into the world, Scott’s life, including his artwork took a new direction. In our conversation, Scott shares about his struggle with perfectionism, why every question doesn’t need an answer, the health difficulties that his daughter has faced from birth, and so much more. The illusion of perfectionism As a creative individual, you want your art to resemble the vision you have for it in your mind as much as possible. This can be both frustrating and exciting. When it comes together just right and looks exactly how you envisioned it - satisfying. On the rare occasion that it exceeds your expectations and imagination - ecstasy. My guest Scott Conary and I spent some time in our conversation around the subject of perfectionism. Scott explained how much the illusion of getting everything just right can derail the creative process. Scott will be the first to tell you that most of his artwork can’t be described as perfect. But because of the lessons he has learned, he would call them complete. Every question doesn’t have an answer Do you ever have a hard time silencing the noise in your head? Does your mind race with what feels like hundreds of questions or ideas? What do you do with those thoughts? My guest, Scott Conary spoke with me about this struggle. He told me about his battle to fight through all that noise and focus on what really matters. We both arrived at a consensus that not all questions need to be answered. You don’t have to follow every thought or idea down the rabbit hole. As difficult as it can be to resist that urge, it can be very freeing to just say “No” and bring your focus back to a singular goal or objective. When you are able to find this type of clarity, your artwork will benefit. The experience that colored everything Have you had a moment that changed the course of your life? Scott Conary’s daughter was born with “Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome.” He talked to me about her birth, and how that moment is the “Experience that colored everything.” As you can imagine, Scott and his wife had their world turned upside down with the diagnosis that came shortly after their daughter’s delivery. Scott was very gracious and transparent in our conversation. He shared about how the art he creates now holds a different meaning for him, it really shifted his artistic motivation. In what sounds like a contradiction, Scott says that his work has less significance but at the same time holds a new kind of meaning. The way Scott described it to me made perfect sense. As serious as his daughter’s condition is, Scott was quick to tell me how much joy she brings their family - at the time of this writing, she is seven years old and thriving. Art as an avenue for healing In light of the diagnosis that Scott and his wife received for their daughter, I wanted to ask Scott if creating art has contributed to healing on his journey. As you can imagine this was a difficult question to answer. Scott was gracious enough to give me an extended answer and discussion on this topic. Initially, Scott said that he didn’t necessarily see his creative pursuits as contributing to his healing process. However, the question resonated with Scott so much that he wanted to take another shot at answering it. On the second pass, Scott shared that he has experienced a sense of healing as he has taken his emotional trauma with him into the studio. In today’s episode of Lions of Liberty, Marc welcomes Scott Horton back to the show to help take a look at the foreign policy team that President (whoa, it’s real now…) Donald Trump has assembled. Scott has been on the show two previous times, is the host of AntiWar Radio, opinion editor at AntiWar.com, and is most recently the Managing Director of the Libertarian Institute.  In the show, you’ll hear: Why Scott co-founded the Libertarian Institute, who else is involved, and what is their mission? What Scott thinks of Rex Tillerson’s potential when it comes to relations with Russia, and why neocons are so obsessed with the framing of Russia as an adversary.  Scott looks at General James “Mad Dog” Mattis, why he is so hawk-ish against Iran, and whether some libertarians are right to be optimistic [...]

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/hardertokill2 Our ancestors crossed the Alps in animal skins and colonized the New World in loin cloths. They evaded predators and built civilizations with just their raw brainpower and inner grit. But things have changed and now comfort is king. Today we live in the thrall of constant climate control and exercise only when our office schedules permit. The technologies that we use to make us comfortable are so all encompassing that they sever the biological link to a changing environment. Now we hate the cold and the heat. We suffer from autoimmune diseases. And many of us are chronically overweight. Most of us don't even realize that natural variation - sweating and shivering - is actually good for us. The new book  uncovers how just about anyone can reclaim a measure of our species' evolutionary strength by tapping into the things that feel uncomfortable. When we slightly reimagine how how our body fits into the world and then we can conditioning ourselves to find resilience in unfamiliar environments. The feeling that something is missing from our daily routines is growing and has spawned a movement. Every year, millions of people forgo traditional gyms and push the limits of human endurance by doing boot camp style workouts in raw conditions. These extreme athletes train in CrossFit boxes, compete in Tough Mudders and challenge themselves in Spartan races. They are connecting with their environment and, whether they realize it or not, are changing their bodies. Perhaps no one exemplifies this better than , whose remarkable ability to control his body temperature in extreme cold has sparked a whirlwind of scientific study. Because of him, scientists in the United States and Europe are just beginning to understand how cold adaptation might help combat autoimmune diseases and chronic pains and, in some cases, even reverse diabetes. My podcast guest on todays show, , dives into the fundamental philosophy at the root of this movement in three interlocking narratives. Scott has long been a champion of working the Amazon sales engine to build your business - and he still is. On this episode he’s going to say that over and over. But he also wants to be known as an Amazon seller who will speak the truth about what’s really happening as Amazon gets more and more crowded and as Amazon adjusts its algorithms as a result. He’s not abandoning Amazon (no way!) but is beginning to notice why he’s got to think bigger, broader, and make things a little less dependent on Amazon alone. You’re going to hear his latest sales numbers and what he is planning to do to adjust his strategy, on this episode. Why would Scott share his own sales and expense numbers? On any of the Amazon sales communities you find on Facebook or other places online you often see screenshots of amazing sales numbers that sellers are getting from their private label products. Great! That’s what selling on Amazon is all about. But often those screenshots and brags don’t tell the whole story. The costs, fees, and other miscellaneous things that go into running a successful business have to be clear as well. So that you can see the real situation that exists for most Amazon sellers, Scott likes to share his own expense and profit numbers. He doesn’t do it to impress you but to impress upon you the realities of what it takes to sell on Amazon successfully. You’re going to get a great education on this episode. Are you sick of the huge fees you’re paying to Amazon? Next time you look over the reports Amazon provides about how your private label products are doing, take a look at the amount of fees Amazon is taking for every sale. Does that number make you sick? Recently Scott looked over his numbers and saw that almost 40% of his sales income was going to Amazon. That’s OK, Amazon deserves something for helping him sell his products so successfully. But what would it be like if even half of the products Scott was selling were able to be sold independent of Amazon? That’s a huge amount of profit back in his product. On this episode you’re going to hear what Scott’s going to be doing to break free of the Amazon fees, so be sure you take some time to listen. Why content marketing is the best way to build a business long term. Do you know the term “content marketing?” It’s one approach to getting people to look at the things you’re doing online. But it’s a long term game. It requires you to be producing quality information that educates people about the topics surrounding your product. It requires you to be working hard to produce lots of things that don’t actually sell your product, but build the level of trust that people have when they see what you have to say about your market area. Can you create content around your market that helps your customer? Scott thinks you probably can and that you should be to begin building a sales channel that is independent of Amazon so that you can make greater profits. Business is business and you need to adjust as you go to make your sales go as far as they can. Be sure to listen to this one. Why you need to focus on a market and not just on a popular widget.   It’s great to get sales from selling lots and lots of popular products. Profit is profit. But if you’re making those sales for only a short time, that’s not a strategy that’s going to last you. That’s why you need to be focusing in on a market that will provide you with many product ideas that can create a sort of product line - not just one product that’s popular right now. On this episode of the podcast Scott unpacks what it means to build a product line within a market and why it’s so important so be sure you take the time to listen. There are lots of people who hear of what’s going on with Amazon private label sales and think that they can’t get into it without a huge investment. But that’s not true, and this interview episode is proof. Today, Scott is chatting with Travis, a normal guy who calls himself an “average Joe.” Travis heard about private label sales on Amazon and decided he was going to make it work even though he didn’t have software to research his product ideas or a huge budget to do it. You’re going to be blown away by the success Travis has had simply by following some common sense steps. Getting the product idea first. Travis’ first private label product idea was a product that is a popular trend right now, so he wasn’t sure if he should go with it or not. But getting a good price on the product and the possibility of a good sized margin prompted him to take the leap. So with $1500 spent in products and fees Travis was able to get his first product onto Amazon. His story is an amazing one because his approach was truly a “bare bones” attempt and his hard work and risk taking has paid off. You can hear the exact steps Travis went through on this episode of The Amazing Seller. Playing with the price to get his product off the ground. When Travis first got his bare bones product onto the Amazon selling platform, his competition was pricing their products are around $15 each. He decided to go below that at  $9.99 each. He wasn't sure what kind of effect that would have but went to sleep after posting his product consoling himself that he shouldn't expect much the first few days. He woke up to 5 sales of his product and he didn't even have any reviews on it yet. You can hear Travis’ amazing story as he shares it with Scott on this episode of The Amazing Seller. Pay per click right away and no reviews. One of the things Scott recommends to new sellers is to get their product onto the Amazon platform and then do a couple of giveaways to prompt reviews for the product.  But Travis wanted to see what would happen if he didn't have any reviews but started with PPC right away. That's what he did, just using a broad search PPC campaign, and his sales began almost immediately. In his first month he sold over a thousand products and still has not secured any reviews for his product. He's hoping that organic reviews will happen soon, but  also knows that he eventually needs to get a giveaway going to get his review started. Travis's gutsy approach is one you'll enjoy hearing about it, on this episode. Proof that private label sales can be done with a small budget and low amount of experience. Today's guest has never done Amazon private label sales before. He did not have a large bank row and had absolutely no experience sourcing or selling products online. The only education he had was listening to the episodes of this podcast. the results he's gotten are amazing. Within his first month Travis has well over $1,000 worth of sales and is already ordering more products to replenish the ones that have been sold. He expects to expand this product into multiple products, possibly variations of the same product, and even adding accessories to his product line. It's proof that Amazon private label sales is the real deal and anyone can do it. OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE OF THE AMAZING SELLER [0:05] Scott’s introduction to the podcast! Today’s guest is no stranger to the Amazing Seller Podcast - not only has Danny Brewer listened to the show from almost the beginning, he’s also been featured on the show as a guest twice, back on episodes 17 and 100. Danny’s back today because he was able to take advantage of a special opportunity Amazon gave to certain sellers, called  “Lightning Deals.” In this conversation Scott is going to ask Danny to walk us through the details of how this opportunity came about, how he took advantage of it, and what the results were from participating in this special Amazon promotion. You’re going to learn a lot from hearing these two guys dig into this topic.   Prime Day was a great boost for many Amazon sellers. What can you learn from it?   Both Scott Voelker and Danny Brewer participated in the Amazon Prime Day event - an opportunity for Amazon buyers to get special deals on lots of products all over the Amazon platform. Scott and Danny both participated, not necessarily giving discounts on their products and the sales were tremendous! Both of them saw much greater returns during a time of the year when sales are not typically the best. In this episode Scott and  Danny spend a little bit of time discussing the pros and cons of the Prime Day event. Their chat could help you prepare for the opportunity the next time it comes around so be sure to listen.   If you get an email from Amazon inviting you to part of a Lightning Deal, you could be in for a wild ride!   Amazon’s newest approach to promotions is called “Lightning Deals” and it’s a way that the Amazon company is reaching out to private label sellers with an offer to participate in 4-hour promotions of your products that could increase your sales and possibly even boost your product visibility from that point on. The initial contact would come from Amazon via email and you’d be invited to participate. At that point you’ll be asked to fill out forms regarding your products, pricing you’re willing to offer, and other information. If you’re product qualifies and Amazon accepts you into the program, you’ll be assigned a specific day and time slot when your product will be offered as a “lightning deal.” You’ll have to have your inventory in Amazon’s warehouse 48 hours before the deal goes live. Find out more about these incredible opportunities for Amazon to promote your products on this episode.   The power of building relationships that keep you moving forward.   Danny Brewer, today’s guest on The Amazing Seller, is a great example of a person who takes action in partnership with other people who are doing the same kind of sales he is doing. He’s a very active member of the TAS Facebook community and also has been involved in a local meeting group of Amazon sellers who share information and keep each other accountable. If you are not part of a group that can help you push forward when you hit your own internal resistance, you have got to find that place. The TAS Facebook group is an amazing option where you’ll find people who are all about helping each other move their Amazon businesses forward.   “TAKE ACTION!” It’s Scott’s favorite phrase.   Many people listen to podcasts all day long and do nothing with the information they hear. Others buy online courses or books and devour them, but don’t move forward with any of the strategies they learn. Are you one of those people? If you are, you’re probably making excuses as to why what you’ve learned doesn’t apply to you, or why you can’t move forward into a business or life you feel you should have. That’s too bad because good things happen for those who take action. You don’t have to know everything, you only have to know the next thing. So find out what it is and get rolling. Take action to see your own Amazon Private Label business succeed!   OUTLINE OF THIS INTERVIEW EPISODE OF THE AMAZING SELLER   [0:05] Scott’s introduction of this episode with his guest, Danny “No B.S.” Brewer. Scotty’s Brewhouse, an “upscale sports bar” with 13 locations in Indiana and coming soon to Illinois and Florida, was created by its namesake owner with the goal of providing a different kind of restaurant experience. “I wanted to make a restaurant that was some place that I could go into at any age and feel comfortable,” says Scott Wise, the Founder, President & CEO. Though Scotty’s Brewhouse boasts an array of interesting and tasty dishes – they sell over a million orders of fried dill pickle chips a year, and a recent pizza special included bacon, cheddar cheese, and crushed Flaming Hot Cheetos – Scott’s attention is not just on providing outstanding food. He considers himself “in the business of customer service” and is intensely focused on providing a uniquely memorable experience to each and every customer. Scott has embraced all forms of social media as a means to connect with his customers, and he reads and responds to every single Tweet. “The fact that we listen to people, and we respond, and we act,” he says, “that one thing that we do in my opinion makes us more successful than almost anything else we do in this restaurant.” And even with 1,300 employees, Scott still forwards his staff Facebook posts, Tweets, and e-mails that mention specific employees along with a personal note of thanks. Scott joined me and Dan Moriarty for a fun and sometimes emotional discussion about doing right by your customers, working hard to earn and keep their trust, and fixing things quickly when mistakes happen. Some of the most quotable moments of this episode of the Focus on Customer Service podcast include: • “You’ve got to have great customer service, great product, and a great location. If you have all of those things, then it should work.” • “Life’s too short to not have fun and not laugh at yourself.” • “I like to entertain people. That’s why I’m in the business of customer service. I want to make you smile and laugh.” • “We’re human beings in a human world, and we’re going to make mistakes.” • “To give someone something they never knew they wanted… that’s when you create a ‘wow’ moment.” Here are the highlights of Episode 17 and where to find them: 1:00 The background on Scotty’s Brewhouse and some of their most interesting dishes 5:50 How Scott decided to combine his personal and corporate Twitter handles into one, and Scott’s approach to social customer service 12:05 How great customer service impacts the overall customer experience at a restaurant – even more than the food 17:16 What Scott looks for in employees when he’s hiring new people 23:04 Which channels do Scott’s customers used to contact him, and how the questions are similar or different across channels 28:57 How Scott’s Brewhouse attempts to sync up the offline and online experience 36:25 Scott’s advice for becoming a customer service rock star Special thanks to Jay Baer for recommending Scotty’s Brewhouse for the podcast. There’s a ton of noise going on lately about hijacked product listings. It sounds pretty scary, and in some ways it could be if you don’t know how to stop it, but as always Scott’s got some great, simple, actionable advice for you as to how you can protect yourself from your products being hijacked. Don’t let it rattle you. You CAN take practical steps to safeguard your product listings from hijackers… now there’s no guarantee all of this will prevent your product from being hijacked, but it will definitely make it much, much harder for it to occur. Listen to this episode of The Amazing Seller to hear all the details. What is a “hijacked” product on Amazon? You’ve done the research to find and purchase your first product. You’ve listed it on Amazon. You’ve got it labeled as your unique brand. Then suddenly you no longer have ownership or control of the “buy box” on your own listing! Somebody has taken over your listing by sending products to Amazon that they “say” are identical to yours… but they CAN’T be. You’re the only one selling your products. You had them created just for you! Do you see the problem? Your sales will be impacted if you don’t do something to remove the hijacker’s products from your listing. How do you do it? That’s what this episode is all about so be sure to listen. The first steps to un-hijacking your product listing. What Scott recommends you do as the very first step if you see that your product has been hijacked is to send a “Cease and Desist” letter to the hijacker. It’s basically a legal-sounding, somewhat threatening letter warning the person of what could happen if they don’t stop positioning their product as yours. They are breaking the Amazon terms of service and could be kicked off the platform, so you’re using that possibility to motivate them to remove their product on their own. What exactly should you letter say? Scott reads an effective C&D letter verbatim on this episode, so make sure you put it on slow play and get every word! The importance of registering your brand. One of the things Amazon has put in place to help you safeguard your listings from hijackers is the “Brand Registry.” It’s a page on Amazon’s site where you can go to register yourself as the owner of your brand, give Amazon a lot of details, and set yourself in a very good defensive position should your products ever be hijacked. Scott recommends that every Amazon Private Label seller register their brand immediately, the minute they begin putting their products on the Amazon sales platform. Find out how on this episode of The Amazing Seller or by using the link to the Amazon Brand Registry included in the show notes. If your Amazon product is hijacked, buy one of the products they are selling. What? Why would you want to buy the product that’s posing as yours? Because when you contact Seller Support at Amazon they are going to ask you to document exactly why the product listed is not your product. That means you’ll need pictures of the product, detailed examples of how it is different from yours, and the overall ability to prove that it is not your product at all. So the minute you notice your product listing has been taken over, order one of the products. You’ll be that much ahead when it comes to rectifying the situation because you’ll be able to prove your product’s uniqueness sooner. Make sure your product is uniquely different, as soon as possible. It’s OK to put labels or stickers on your products to “brand” them when you first start selling on Amazon. But you can’t be satisfied with that. Stickers are too easy to fake. You want to do something unique that will make it much harder for a hijacker to create a fake of your product. Things like engraving, custom packaging, or combining your product with a related accessory that will be hard for the imposter to source, all those and more can help you set your product apart. Scott’s got other ideas too, so listen to the podcast to get all his thoughts. Every person who takes on the challenge of building their own business through Amazon’s Private Label options dreams of hitting it big with real product success from the start. Today’s episode highlights a guy who did just that. Scott Thomas and his partner stepped out of the ecommerce realm to try their hand at Amazon simply because the Amazon Sales platform is such a powerful machine for drawing in customers and closing sales. Even with their experience in Ecommerce they were shocked at how quickly their products took off. Hear the whole story on this episode. The importance of quality checking your first order, yourself. Scott and his partner put in their first order from a supplier in China and received it within a few months rather than having it sent directly to Amazon. They are very glad they did because there were a number of things wrong with the order. If it had reached Amazon as it was shipped things would have gone very wrong. Scott recommends that every Amazon Seller check their first couple of orders themselves to make sure everything is dialed in and the supplier knows exactly what to do every time. Hear more of Scott’s advice on the Amazing Seller. A novel way of getting the first 20 sales of his product and the impact it had. Scott Thomas and his partner have gone through Scott Voelker’s material and knew they could get sales and reviews by offering discounts on their product. But they had a hunch that if they had full price sales within the first few days of their product being listed, they’d bounce higher in the rankings almost immediately. So they explained what they were doing to 20 close friends and asked them to purchase their product at full price to help them get things rolling. Those 20 sales came in within a few days and things happened exactly as they suspected. Find out more about how Scott combined that tactic with Amazon PPC in this episode. How should you go about determining modifications to make to your Private Label products to make them unique and more appealing to buyers? Scott Thomas discovered that one of the best ways to find out what consumers want is to spend time reading posts in the forums where your ideal customers hang out. They often talk about specific products and their gripes and gratitude surrounding those products. From there a ton of ideas come up that enable Scott to make the modifications that people buying their products actually want. That’s just one of Scott’s tactics and you can hear the rest by listening to this episode. Get on board Scott Voelker’s free live workshop to learn how to do Amazon Sales.
