In 1996 there was a concerted attempt to relocate the then Premier League club Wimbledon FC to Dublin. When the club became homeless in 1991, owner Sam Hammam had the idea to move the Dons to Dublin. In the end the FAI and FIFA blocked the move, and Wimbledon ended up moving to Milton Keynes, later to be renamed to MK Dons. Specs Gonzalez is joined by co-host Tego Sigel and Ciaran Carlin to discuss what would have happened if Wimbledon had become the Dublin Dons. Would Wimbledon become Premier League Champions? OCTOBER 3rd 2021: Belmont Banter Episode 81 JAKE GESS: Official podcast of Whitstable Town F.C. The early years for Jake were playing with his brother using two dustbins and a scaffold board for a goal around where he lived in Hales Place. He played school and district football until the age of eleven when he was picked up by Wimbledon FC after taking part in a trial at Kennington FC. He stayed at Wimbledon until he was released at sixteen and the disappointment knocked his confidence until he joined the Kent side, which he says he…” walked into”. He then played at Littlebourne FC and Canterbury U18's for two years up until at nineteen, he then decided to take a year out and just played Sunday football. Jake saying that the ‘disappointment of not progressing affected him for years and at one stage he received twelve yellow cards in one season'.  He then joined Whitstable Town playing in the reserves under the then manager Simon Kay for a year before being asked to join the first team where Marc Seager was manager. Saying that… ‘Simon installed confidence in him and ‘Seags' was a great man manager, the two of them brought out the best in me'. I had those great three seasons or so, Seags left and my form dropped off. He tells a great story about an end of season trip to Spain when he was at Town, leaving out some of the more 'interesting' bits.  Simon Halsey who was by then Herne Bay manager asked him to join them where he stayed for a season and a half. He then joined Canterbury City for nearly three years which he enjoyed.  He then joined Deal Town for a while then finished up his football at Deal Sports which he said he enjoyed on a par with his time at Whitstable but added, that it was just with his mates, it was fun…Check it out; even if you're not involved in WTFC it's another great listen from Belmont Banter Podcast. He – and thousands of others – are co-owners of the fan-owned club that has become the success story of a football club owned by and driven by fans. Wimbledon FC was robbed and kidnapped from its community and moved to Milton Keynes about 100 kilometers north of Wimbledon. A group of fans reacted straight away and started AFC Wimbledon. But they were forced to start in the ninth tier of the English football pyramid. Since then it’s been an amazing journey and after six promotions the club is now in League 1. The same league where the club that was stolen and shouldn’t exist – MK – play. This week Tom has gone back to Wimbledon and meets up with AFC Wimbledon commercial director Ivor Heller – and old friends from the stands.
