For the first time in a quarter-century, Congress passed a sweeping $9.4 billion rescission package, marking a pivotal shift toward fiscal conservatism. With support from Senate Republicans and former President Trump, the bill eliminates funding for NPR, foreign aid, and climate programs, reclaiming unused pandemic and infrastructure funds. Touted by conservatives as a blow to bloated bureaucracy and left-wing agendas, the measure is seen as the first step in dismantling the administrative state. Critics argue the cuts are largely symbolic—but House Speaker Mike Johnson promises this is just the beginning.
Slashed and passed. The Senate takes a $9 billion bite out of foreign aid. And that's just the start. Plus, the Epstein files, and a sharp turn away from Trump. What he's now saying about his own supporters, and the message he's sending if they keep digging.

The Medicaid budget just lost about $1 trillion. Eleven million more Americans will go uninsured, the CBO estimates, and those who remain Medicaid-eligible may lose coverage for "optional" services. What if the real power move in your mortgage business isn't scaling up—but stepping back? In this episode, I sit down with Dominique Gonthier—a former military officer turned mortgage broker who built a business funding 250 deals a year, then deliberately cut that number in half to focus on family, fitness, and freedom. We dive into how he transitioned from realtor to broker, built an efficient team, and now takes entire weeks off to work on his business instead of always in it. If you're grinding nonstop and feel like growth comes at the cost of your personal life, Dominique's story will give you a new model. In this episode, we'll cover: Starting Strong – How Dominique hit 85 files in his first year after transitioning from real estate and military service. Scaling Back to Move Forward – Why he chose to drop from 250 to 100 files annually—and is happier and more profitable. Running Lean with Tech – How he uses Zoho CRM and a focused team to stay efficient without burnout. On today's podcast: 1) Stocks soar as the U.S. and China agree to de-escalate their trade war. The US and China will temporarily lower tariffs on each other's products, with the US reducing its levies from 145% to 30% and China reducing its duties from 125% to 10%. The tariff reductions are a move to cool trade tensions and give the two countries three more months to resolve their differences, with talks potentially leading to "purchasing agreements" by China. 2) Drug stocks tumble as President Trump plans to order pharmaceutical price cuts. The declines affected European drugmakers, US drugmakers, and Asian pharmaceutical companies, with some companies experiencing their biggest one-day loss since August. The plan to lower prescription drug prices may have a significant impact on the industry's revenues, particularly for companies that depend heavily on US sales 3) Hamas says it will free its last American hostage as the president heads to the Middle East. It will release 21-year-old Israeli soldier Edan Alexander, a US citizen, as a step toward reaching a new ceasefire agreement in Gaza. The release is a result of renewed talks between the US and Hamas.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It feels like every week Denverites are grappling with some shocking new way that President Trump is using the power of the federal government to reshape life here in the Mile High. This week, it's art. Trump's National Endowment for the Arts cut almost a half-million dollars in previously awarded grants last Friday to 22 local arts organizations, including the Denver Art Museum and Su Teatro, because their programs didn't conform with the president's new “priorities.” So host Bree Davies is talking to Youth on Record executive director and veteran arts fundraiser Jami Duffy about the impact on the local arts community, how much leverage Trump really has, and how the local arts world is pushing back in all different ways. In response to Trump's NEA grant cuts, the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation announced this week a new 2025 Arts & Culture Rapid Response Grant program to help make up the shortfall for the local organizations that lost money. This week on Fat Science, Dr. Emily Cooper, Andrea Taylor and Mark Wright tackle the urgent issue of deep funding cuts to scientific research in the United States. Dr. Cooper shares firsthand insight on how these changes are affecting patient care and scientific integrity, highlighting the pressures researchers face—including censorship and loss of resources at institutions like the NIH. The conversation sheds light on how misinformation, government interference, and reduced diversity in studies threaten the future of metabolic, cancer and public health research. Listeners will better understand why research matters for everyday health, and what's at stake when critical projects lose funding.Key Takeaways:Sweeping research cuts at major institutions like NIH jeopardize progress in areas like metabolic health, cancer, ALS, heart disease, and Alzheimer's.Researchers are facing censorship and pressure to alter or suppress scientific findings in nutrition, autism, and vaccine research.Reducing diversity in research undermines scientific accuracy and inclusivity, risking treatments that don't address the needs of all populations.Slashed funding will stall new medical discoveries, limit future treatment options, and may have consequences for decades to come.Misinformation around vaccines and public health is rising as government agencies are pressured to alter or hide true scientific data.Resources:Links: Current Medical ReportingVin Gupta, MD Nutrition InformationNutrition for Mortals Podcast with Dietitians: Matt and Jen Infectious Diseases, ImmunizationsMaria Van Kerkhove - WHOJeff DuchinMichael Osterholm, CIDRAP Kevin Hall ResearchKevin Hall on LinkedIn Connect with Dr. Emily Cooper on LinkedIn.Connect with Mark Wright on LinkedIn.Connect with Andrea Taylor on Instagram.Fat Science is a podcast on a mission to explain where our fat really comes from and why it won't go and stay away. It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with Tariq Habash, former senior official at the Dept. of Education under President Biden, founder & director of the organization A New Policy, to discuss the Trump administration's actions taken regarding student loans. Then, he speaks with Dr. MarkAlain Dery, infectious disease specialist, founder of community radio station 102.3 WHIV-FM, and creator of the NoiseFilter podcast, to discuss the recent measles outbreaks in Texas & New Mexico. First, Sam runs through updates on Europe's retaliatory tariffs, public backlash to Trump's handling of the economy, the House's passage of a Continuing Resolution as the fight moves to the Senate, Trump's slashing of the DOE, Trump's $100m Tesla deal, Trump's disappearing of Columbia student and permanent US resident Mahmoud Khalil, Ukraine's support for a ceasefire, the DOJ's public corruption unit, and cuts to NOAA and the EPA, before expanding on the insane debate over the GOP's “clean” Continuing Resolution, and why Senate Democrats are so willing to hand over the US government to Elon Musk. Tariq Habash then joins, first stepping back to walk through his experience working in Biden's DOE before leaving in protest at the start of last year over the President's support of Israel's ethnic cleansing of Gaza, and unpack why the internal barriers to policy work so pushed him to establishing “A New Policy.” Moving forward, Habash explores why, despite Democrats' desires, the issue of the ethnic cleansing of Gaza will not go away under Trump, with his dreams to fully redevelop the Gaza strip in his own immaged backed by his revamping of Israel's assault and a domestic crackdown (including full-on dissappearings) of pro-Palestinian activism, with the recent abduction of Mahmoud Khalil working as Trump's perfect crime to wage war on the rights of Black and Brown permanant residents – capitalizing on Democratic Leadership's commitment to genocide to minimize dissent from the opposition. Shifting to the domestic policy side of things, Tariq brings Sam through Trump's attack on the DOE, walking through the department's long history as a Civil Rights agency, before diving deep into Trump's attack on the student loan and debt relief programs, which explicitly seek to target public service workers, and folks that work with trans folks, immigrants, or Palestinians. Wrapping up, Habash looks to the devastating impact Trump's DOE cuts will have on special education in the US, and what to make of our major educational institutions fully acquiesing to the regime. Dr. MarkAlain Dery then jumps right into a clear assessment of RFK's myriad destructive actions since being named HHS Secretary, from his lack of awareness about the ongoing measles crisis, to his cancelling of ACIP, and his backing of the all-around shutdown of any federal public health communications and much of its funding. After expanding on the fundamental problem with focusing on mitigating rather than preventative care, Dr. Dery walks Sam through the importance of a public health regime when it comes to addressing large-scale health issues facing the American public, pulling from his own recent work in New Orleans, before looking toward the biggest threats he sees facing the US' weakened public health infrastructure, including the threat of an ever-mutating bird flu, and the recent bubblings of hantavirus. Wrapping up, Dr. MarkAlain Dery reemphasizes that we have the capacity to fight against these threats, despite doubts about the current administration. And in the Fun Half: Sam dives into the outcome of the Democratic Party and mainstream media's complete acquiesence to the right wing's transphobic fearmongering, with Trump's regime implementing a full scale erasure and attack on trans identity and community, looking to Rep. Keating's complete takedown of Rep. Keith Self's blantant and direct misgendering of Rep. Sarah McBride.
