Cesarean Awareness Month: My C-Section Experience

This month is Cesarean Awareness Month. Did you know there is actually an organization called International Cesarean Awareness Network? If you didn't, you're not alone because I just learned about it too. This organization's purpose is to: to improve maternal-child health by reducing preventable cesareans through education support cesarean recovery, and advocate for vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC). In this episode, I shared my c-section story. I had a planned c-section and fortunately, all went smoothly and almost exactly as written for our birth plan. I was a candidate for planned c-section from early on because of a previous open abdominal surgery to remove several fibroids. My story includes: my health leading up to the motherhood, my cesarean experience, and how long it took me to bounce back. After having this experience, I realized that I hadn't actually heard anyone's birth story. I only heard about the pain from an epidural. On tv shows (sitcoms) and movies, having the baby at the hospital leaves out a ton of detail too! If you had a cesarean, write to us and share your thoughts! Something I didn't know is that according to researchers, 50% of cesareans could be safely prevented. Did you feel pressure to do a cesarean? Was a cesarean what you wanted? Did you have enough information? Was you c-section elective? Did you have to change doctors? Were you scared to have a c-section? ******* Disclaimer: I have no affiliation with International Cesarean Awareness Network. When making a decision, please seek advice from medical professionals. I am only sharing my experience and not giving any advice. ******** I hope this helped someone today. If you have any thoughts or comments, I want to hear from you. And if this touched you in any way, please share this with a friend to help inspire another person on their motherhood journey. If you are listening on Apple Podcasts you can leave a review. She is the author of “The Low-Carbon Cookbook and Action Plan: Reduce Food Waste and Combat Climate Change with 140 Sustainable Plant-Based Recipes” (DK/Penguin Random House, June 2021). Alejandra joined me for a conversation on the First Time Moms Beyond 35 Podcast to talk about her surprise pregnancy at 46!  This is good news for anyone thinking about having a child later in life.  She had previously been told that she was not able to get pregnant and therefore she didn't expect it to be possible.  To her surprise in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, she found out that she was 8 weeks pregnant.  Listen to this segment to hear how and where she figured out that she was pregnant.  She also shared how she surprised her older husband with the news.  We discuss the options of testing for chromosomal abnormalities (chorionic villus sampling (CVS) and amniocentesis).  Then we get into Alejandra's reality of having a baby, writing a book, and being an entrepreneur.  I always like to know how people manage their time. Alejandra is small-business owner and natural born leader.  She has taken on the blessing of motherhood with grace and is so thankful for her miracle. Every first time parent needs a set of friends going through a similar experience. So while you may have friends with children, they may be at a completely different stage than you are and you are likely to go searching for peers, only to find that all the other first timers are way younger than you. Let this podcast be a place for you to feel less alone and more together with parents having the same highs and lows.  For any woman having a child in their 30s, 40s, and even 50s, the labels "advanced maternal age" and "geriatric" are terms you may find frustrating and unavoidable.  Do not let these labels bring you down in any way.  We each have a unique story and anything is possible.  You are welcome to include The First Time Moms Beyond 35 Podcast as part of your journey for support, healing, and inspiration. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/isabel-prosper/support

In this episode, I spoke to a Dr. Jenn a PhD doctor that shared her medical story and the device she invented to help her conceive.  Jenn's story began when she was trying to conceive and she was told by her doctor that she had to wait 1 year before she could see a fertility specialist.  Like many of us, she was motivated to get pregnant right away and the thought of being unable to conceive for a whole year was frightening. Finally, after seeing the fertility specialist and completing the necessary tests, she was diagnosed with unexplained infertility.  To help her conceive, the recommendation was an IUI (intrauterine insemination) procedure, which required thousands of dollars in upfront payment.  In that moment, Jenn decided to use her PhD in Biology to develop the PherDal kit. Today, she can proudly say that it worked and she has recently made the product available for anyone trying to conceive! From fibroids to miscarriages to birth of a healthy baby. In this episode, I spoke to Ana Karina Koper in Guatemala.  She went from workaholic to momaholic!  Her career was everything to her and she hadn't thought about having kids until later in life. In Part 1 of this interview, we learn about the obstacles and tragedy she overcame.  She was told she had less than 5% chance to have a baby when she was 40.  She had 8 tumors, no frozen eggs, endometriosis and was told she had to do IVF right away.  She jumped at the opportunity and to her dismay, she suffered in the process because the clinic lost her embryos.  She is still fighting this clinic.  She later met a Chinese doctor that informed her that as long as she had not reached menopause, she was still fertile.  Ana Karina did her research and started doing natural therapies to help her get pregnant.  Many doctors told her that there was a very low chance of having a child and that she should use a donor egg.  She continued to try to have a baby with her own eggs.  She didn't give up.  Listen to Part 1 and 2 of her journey and be inspired.
