A licensed acupuncturist and herbalist in private practice in New York, she holds a Master of Science degree in Traditional Oriental Medicine from the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, a Bachelor's degree in biology from Rutgers University and is currently working on a master's level education in functional medicine. Aimee is also the founder of the Aimee Raupp Beauty line of hand-crafted, organic skincare products. She has appeared on The View, and has been featured in Glamour, Allure, Well + Good, GOOP, Shape, and Redbook, and has received endorsements from Deepak Chopra, Dr. Christiane Northrup, Arianna Huffington, and Gabby Bernstein for her work in helping thousands of women to improve their vitality, celebrate their beauty, and reconnect to the presence of their optimal health. Aimee is also the Head of Chinese Medicine at The Well, an active columnist for media outlets such as Thrive Global, Well + Good, MindBodyGreen and is a frequent speaker at women's health & wellness conferences across the nation. She engages her large community worldwide through her online During this episode Aimee will help walk through a variety of topics around egg quality but one major important thing to remember is that when you are improving the quality of your egg cells you are also improving all the cells in your body, we are amplifying health.   Aimee helps answer the question of if women are born with all your eggs you will ever have, how is it possible to impact your egg quality? Aimee explains that the eggs  you have are not developed. When those eggs mature the environment, you are in is what impacts their quality. The extracellular fluid that surrounds the cells is affected by the environment. Aimee also dives into a variety of other ways your egg quality can be affected.   It is important for women to realize they can control certain things and one of the items that research is pointing towards is a certain type of anti-inflammatory diet lifestyle and diet lowers oxidative stress, which causes cellular abnormality which can lead to poor egg quality. Using food to change the aging process behind your cells will help improve the quality. What you do now will affect the next 2 generations.   Aimee has written a book, The Egg Quality Diet,  which is the culmination of what Aimee Raupp has found, during her two decades of clinical practice, to be the most effective nutritional approach to optimizing fertility. This diet has been proven to work not in a randomized control trial (RCT) but in real life, on thousands of real women like you. The short version of her book is to count your Macros. Your macros should be 40-50% quality fat, 30% protein and the rest good quality carbs (sweet potatoes, beans, fruits). Her thought process is to heal the gut, improve absorption. Her book is meant to be for you to discover the best diet that works for you. Aimee also helps understand why a plant-based diet maybe difficult to hit your nutritional needs to help with your egg quality.   There will be a point in each woman's life that they decide to stop trying to use their own eggs and decide to go forward with a donor. Aimee says that she thinks the decision is something that each woman and couple needs to make on their own but her gauge is how much more heartache can you handle or how much more can you financially afford. Just remember to emotionally check in with yourself and also have no regrets that you didn't do everything in your power.   To learn more about Aimee, please visit her website at https://aimeeraupp.com and you can find her book, The Egg Quality Diet on Amazon.

When horses were replaced by engines, for work and transportation, we didn’t need to rethink our legal frameworks. So when a fixed-in-place factory machine is replaced by a free-standing AI robot, or when human truck driver is replaced by autonomous driving software, do we really need to make any fundamental changes to the law?  My guest today seems to think so. Or perhaps more accurately, he thinks that surprisingly, we do not; he says we need to change the laws less than we think. In case after case, he says, we just need to treat the robot more or less the same way we treat a person.  A year ago, he was giving presentations in which he argued that Ais can be patentholders. Since then, his views have advanced even further. And so last summer, Cambridge University Press published a short but powerful treatise, The Reasonable Robot: Artificial Intelligence and the Law. In it, he argues that the law more often than not should not discriminate between AI and human behavior. Ryan Abbott is a Professor of Law and Health Sciences at the University of Surrey and an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He’s a licensed physician, and an attorney, and an acupuncturist in the United States, as well as a solicitor in England and Wales. His M.D. is from UC San Diego’s School of Medicine; his J.D. is from Yale Law School and his M.T.O.M.—Master of Traditional Oriental Medicine—degree is from Emperor's College.

Most men don't and it's important that you do! Andropause can be likened to a woman's experience of menopause. It's very common in our culture to talk about women's hormonal phases but we rarely talk about men's and it's so important!  I can't believe I'd never heard of Andropause, and neither have many men I asked about it. If you are struggling with brain fog, tiredness, lowered libido, midday exhaustion, or generally not feeling like yourself, this is something to look into.   Dr. Nell has a Doctorate in Acupuncture and Traditional Oriental Medicine, as well as many other degrees. With a predominantly male patient base, she became interested in this critical phase in a man’s life. She created PIQUE Health for Men where she also focuses how to help men achieve peak performance, based on their individual needs with work and lifestyle.  In our Man Alive conversation we discussed: What Andropause is and how to treat it  How to be truly healthy, beyond the western medical model (which often leaves men struggling and confused)  The 3 Pillars of Peak Performance and surprising ways to optimize your performance The keys to both mental and physical stamina How to stop settling for brain fog, weight gain, exhaustion or low libido as a fact of getting older Connect with Dr. Nell Website: piquebh.com  Connect with Shana James  Website: shanajamescoaching.com/3ways Curious what you’d need to become a better leader and lover? Take the quiz For Women: Modern dating doesn’t have to be a nightmare for women

A fascinating episode on the books today with Dr. Roy Page, a protege of Kabuki Board Member Dr. Craig Liebenson and head associate at world-renowned clinic LA Sport & Spine. Our hosts sit down with Dr. Roy to discuss his education and experience as a practitioner in both western and eastern schools when it comes to rehabilitation modalities. All of our hosts had a chance to experience some unique and novel techniques that Dr. Roy specializes in and utilizes with his patients, particularly electroacupuncture.  Dr. Roy received the a Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Logan College along with a Master of Science Degree in Sports Science and Rehabilitation. He has also achieved a Master of Traditional Oriental Medicine from Emperor’s College and is a California licensed acupuncturist. The American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians recognizes him as a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician, and the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine has awarded him the status Diplomate of Oriental Medicine.  He began fine-tuning his clinical work in functional rehabilitation under the direct supervision of Dr. Craig Liebenson in 2012, and he regularly assists Dr. Liebenson at various teaching events across the country. Dr. Page has been a past secretary for the International Society of Clinical Rehabilitation Specialists and continues to represent the emerging interdisciplinary rehab community within the private sector. Roy’s detective-like interest in human movement stems from his avid long time study of various martial arts. In particular, he began studying Yang style Taijiquan (T’ai Chi Ch’uan) in 1997 after having spent a year wheelchair bound due to a severe football injury. Tajiquan was a major component of his rehabilitation that taught him how to walk again, empowering him to return to sport. He has studied Taijiquan with many notable teachers across the United States, including his teacher’s Sifu Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming as well as Dr. Yang’s original Taiji teacher, Grandmaster Kao, Tao. Dr. Page began co-teaching Tajiquan, along with Muay Thai, Wing Chun, and Kali at Rhodes College in Memphis, TN from 2001 – 2006 and has taught privately thereafter. He considers himself a movement specialist due to his colorful history with various martial arts, manual medicine, and rehabilitation based performance care.  He also aims to uniquely interweave Eastern medicine with the functional rehabilitation paradigm by recognizing common themes within traditional diagnosis and meridian therapy with modern understandings of anatomy and the body’s adaptive potential to influences from the environment. In this way, Dr. Page is capable of managing the entire spectrum of a patient’s needs from top personal performance to deep recovery. Through Acupuncture, herbal, and nutraceutical therapies, he has additional expertise in the management of post-stroke rehabilitation and stroke prevention, autoimmune disorders, and the management of side-effects from cancer related medical interventions.  Sports Physicians recognizes him as a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician, and the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine has awarded him the status Diplomate of Oriental Medicine.

Health Mysteries Solved

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 2, 2020 44:13

The Case:  Ariella is 32 and has been trying to get pregnant for the last year.  As soon as she stopped taking the pill, she experienced irregular cycles, and headaches and cramps around her period Her family doctor’s only suggestion was to see a fertility specialist who suggested IVF which was too expensive.  She tried tracking her cycle with an app but it wasn’t helping. The Investigation More than 10% of American women struggle to become (or stay) pregnant. Infertility has been on a steady incline over the past few decades and it’s estimated that by 2025, there will be close to 10 million couples struggling to have a baby.  Fertility challenges may be common but in Ariella’s case, I suspected that the root of the problem had been hiding for a long time. My first clue was that she’d started taking birth control pills over a decade ago in order to deal with similar symptoms of her period. The pill may have masked the symptoms, but they didn’t solve the problem. If she wanted to get pregnant, we would have to deal with the root cause.  Kymberly Kelly is a licensed acupuncturist with a practice in New York City. She has a Master’s of Science in Traditional Oriental Medicine from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in San Diego, California and is a Diplomat with the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). She specializes in fertility enhancement and pregnancy support so I knew she would be just the person to discuss Ariella’s case with.  The Chinese Medicine Approach Just like functional medicine, Chinese medicine looks at the individual and knows that there is no one-size-fits-all solution. They know that the entire body constitution must be considered to solve an issue. Kymberly explains that fertility issues are not just about the sex organs. You have to look at the systems and find the pattern constitution. For example, she would look at someone dealing with headaches and consider what happens alongside those headaches. This might be triggers or other symptoms that will give a clearer sense of what treatment is going to solve the problem not just mask it. This is quite true for those suffering from Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) which is a common cause of infertility.  Internal Weather Conditions Chinese medicine describes phenomenon that are happening in the body by likening it to what was happening in the outside world. So, for example, you might talk about the body’s internal environment as windy, dry, damp, hot or cold the same way you would describe the weather. These conditions are apparent to the trained eye of a Chinese medicine practitioner and help tell the story of what is happening with the different bodily systems that could be causing an issue. Plus, your internal body condition will respond to the external conditions. So, if you have a damp constitution, you might feel worse when it’s humid or raining outside. You might also feel worse when you eat ‘damp’ food like tofu or dairy. But, there is a way to balance out these internal conditions.  Diagnosing Body Constitution Patterns There are no diagnostic tests to determine if you are damp, dry, hot, or cold internally; Chinese medicine tests are subjective. Kymberly explains that she has to ask a lot of questions around sleep, digestion, thirst, and temperature to see what the body is experiencing and how all of the systems are functioning together. She feels different pulses, to get a clear picture of what’s going on in the body. And, she will take a look at the tongue. Does it have teeth marks around the edge, thick coating, or really distended veins underneath? Each of these things can be significant to determining the internal state of the body. Chinese Medicine Treatment for Infertility Each patient is going to have their own unique treatment plan based on the assessment of their constitutional patterns and the internal state of their body. However, Kymberly says that 99% of treatments for fertility include acupuncture. Acupuncture works well to adjust the qi in the body and reset certain systems. She often starts with that and then adds herbal treatments one at a time so that she can determine what’s working and not working. It’s a process and it may take some time and some treatment-tweaking to restore fertility.  Stress, Infertility and Acupuncture Stress can dramatically affect fertility, especially if it is chronic. If the body is in a permanent parasympathetic state, the environment is not right for creating new life. When we think of it in terms of fight or flight, a body in this state will not do anything to decrease the chances of survival (as a pregnancy would) so it shuts down fertility. So many of us are dealing with constant low-level stress that it can be hard to believe that this is the cause of infertility. Acupuncture can counter that parasympathetic state and calm the central nervous system down. Reducing stress is often step one in dealing with infertility.  Reproductive Battery Pack Chinese medicine recognizes that there are many systems that support the reproductive system. Clearing or restoring Qi flow to these systems can be critical in solving infertility issues. The kidney systems is one of these crucial systems because it must be in balance for the body to create follicle and to build some endometrial lining. Each must be functioning for ovulation to come to fruition at ovulation. The liver system is also crucial because it is closely linked to the release of hormones through the cycle. A well functioning liver system will help the hormonal transitions through the cycle with ease, which is ideal for fertilization. Stagnation of the liver system, on the other hand, can lead to challenges with reproduction. These organ systems have a role to play in the overall energetic system and the blood system. If either or both of these experience stagnation, the result can cause fertility issues.  Food and Infertility Chinese medicine regards food (and it’s role in the body’s constitution) a little differently than a nutritionist. While I might look at the nutrients, Chinese medicine is a little more focused on the nature of the foods. So, instead of the vitamins and minerals they are looking at the temperature, the thickness, the dampness and how those attributes impact the body’s internal environment. According to Chinese medicine, those can affect the way the body functions. And, eating warm food is better for digestion (because cold signals a shut down while warm activates). Having said that, Kymberly is a big proponent of Chinese medicine in combination with good nutrition - she would just caution against eating cold or raw things. She is also a big proponent of bone broth, especially for women wanting to get pregnant.  Are Menstrual Cycle Apps Useful? One of the things that Ariella was doing was tracking her menstrual cycle using an app. These apps can be helpful but, as was the case with Ariella, they don’t always tell the whole story. Instead, I had her track her temperature which revealed that she was not ovulating when she thought she was. Kymberly agrees that it’s important to track everything that is happening in your body throughout the course of your cycle. This would include body temperature, cervical fluid and any other indicator of hormonal shifts.  Top 3 Tips for Getting Pregnant   Track Your Cycle   Don’t rely strictly on an app, track as many indicators as you can to paint as clear a picture as possible.    Balance Nutrition   Eat nutrient rich foods that are warm (not cold or raw). Specifically, ensure you’re getting enough protein (bone broth and other animal protein is ideal), plants with chlorophyll, as well as essential fatty acids like you’d find in avocado, coconut and olive oils, and fatty fish.    Reduce Stress    This includes stressing about getting pregnant! Remember, it can take time. It can take 6-12 months for a perfectly healthy couple to get pregnant so don’t put too much pressure on each cycle.  Mystery Solved These tips proved successful for Ariella. One of the most important clues to solving her mystery was when we realized that she was not ovulating in the middle of her cycle as the app assumed. She was actually ovulating on day 21!  While she wasn’t able to see Kymberly (due to living on the other side of the country) she did see an acupuncturist. We worked together on monitoring her cycle (the right way) and balancing her biochemistry.  Specifically, Ariella started taking omega 3s as well as evening primrose oil. We also added magnesium and did two months of calcium d glucarate to help her better detoxify estrogen (creating a better estrogen to progesterone balance). Happy Ending After two months on the nutrition changes and weekly acupuncture, her ovulation moved from day 21 to day 16. She was also feeling much more even, had less cramps, and her premenstrual headaches were much better. Two months after that (which was four months after starting everything), she got pregnant naturally.  Ariella was of course thrilled and has gone on to have a healthy baby boy last year. Of course I also supported her during her pregnancy and she really felt great during that whole time. She was taking the Prenatal Brilliance and Brilliant DHA, zinc, phos choline and magnesium and continued with those postpartum while she was nursing.  Eliminating Health Mysteries For Ariella, we were able to get to the root problem (and avoid expensive IVF) to create a perfect environment for pregnancy. This episode we bring back Najah Abdus-Salaam. Najah Abdus-Salaam's love for Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine began fifteen years ago with her first Acupuncture treatment. It was so profoundly powerful that she decided right then and there to become a healer. She graduated with her BS in Marketing and Advertising from Kean University in New Jersey and after working in her field for a number of years and not feeling fulfilled, Najah attended Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in San Diego where she graduated with her Masters in Traditional Oriental Medicine. During her clinical work in externships at San Diego's Senior Center at St. Lutheran Church, and the San Diego Cancer Research Institute in Encinitas, Najah's passion to help the elderly population and those affected with terminal illnesses grew immensely. It has taught her to be a compassionate, gentle healer that has the ability to hold a safe space for her patients. Which ultimately led her to create her non-profit, Nourishing Compassion. After experiencing many situations where an individual is nearing the end of their life, and they are surrounded by family that are stressed by providing care, that this idea came about. The caregivers need the support as much as the patients do. Najah combines the therapeutic benefits of acupuncture, herbs, and moxibustion with sound therapy, and crystal energies. Her passion to help people is very important to her, and when she has free time, Najah loves to cook, read, meditate, practice classical Feng Shui, practice Bheemashakti Yoga, rollerblade, make jewelry and keep learning and growing to perfect her healing talents. This month on The Girl Talk, we'll speak to women who can help give us that hope by reflecting on what we've accomplished in the last year, how to care for ourselves even at our darkest moments, and how we can avoid fatigue and keep striving to make the world less awful. It's easy to be a dick to yourself a few weeks into the new year if you missed the gym or broke your resolutions in some other ways, but that's no way to love yourself! Her formal education encompassed not only acupuncture, but Chinese Herbal medicine, the unique and involved theoretical construct of Asian medicine, western biomedicine, and both western and eastern perspectives on nutrition. It was during this experience that she began to grasp a much deeper appreciation for the traditional ways of studying and implementing whole food nutrition. Some years into practicing, she came upon what for her would be a transformative book, “The Maker’s Diet” by Jordan Rubin. The information in the book—based upon the concept that we should eat foods more in alignment with the foods our ancestors consumed--became a catalyst for even greater change in her approach to nutrition, and her respect for the power it holds. She began to see her kitchen not as a place of sheer consumption, but rather, a venue for creation and study. Beginning with using alternatives to pasteurized cow’s milk, then moving into making yogurt and kefir, and next onto soaking and sprouting beans, her experiences in traditional methods sparked further questions and continued interest in their functionality. And this interest continues today! A member of the Weston A. Price Foundation and the National Association of Nutrition Professionals, she now teaches on these methods and the reasons for them. From fermentation and culturing, to low-heat dehydrating, to soaking and sprouting and the use of bone broths, her commitment and passionate respect for these methods have become a cornerstone of her practice. She uses these techniques daily in the care of her family, and is always building upon the knowledge she has gleaned both formally and on the counters of her kitchen, to push the envelop of understanding about the functionality of these techniques in our busy, modern lives. She shares many of her recipes and insights on her website, naturallylivingtoday.com.

Grace Suh, a licenensed acupuncturist, talks to me about her incredibly interesting and unique eastern medicine approach to weight loss – Grace Fat Loss Method: Ancient Secrets to Burn Fat and Boost Energy. Transcript Click here to view the full transcript for #37 Grace Fat Loss Method with Grace Suh. I’ve discovered a weird new approach to weight loss… that’s actually pretty cool. If you are trying to lose weight and have been around the block with all the weight loss books and methods out there, believe me, you have not heard anything like Grace's method before. I know a lot about weight loss, but I learned some fun, interesting new techniques with her Grace Fat Loss Method because it is such a unique approach, incorporating principles of eastern medicine. She really has a lot of simple, effective tips that you can incorporate into your weight loss regime. Developed by my friend and colleague Grace Suh, acupuncturist and blogger at the Huffington Post, the approach uses some truly bizarre techniques, like this: Grace teaches you how to flick, flap and pull your ears to become a better fat burner. Sounds strange, right? That’s what I thought, until Grace explained that this is actually a time-tested technique used in Eastern Medicine called “auricular therapy.” It’s based on the concept of meridians, energy channels connecting our brains and bodies, and pressure points, special spots on the body that activate these energy channels. And that’s just one of the weird weight loss techniques that Grace teaches her clients when they want to lose fat fast. She also makes some strange recommendations when it comes to food – namely, that you can eat plenty of delicious, savory food that will leave you feeling more satisfied than ever and still lose weight. I’m fascinated by Grace’s approach and I highly recommend checking it out.I’m fascinated by Grace’s approach and I highly recommend checking it out.
