Today on The Natural Birth Podcast we have Aubrey. Aubrey is a mama of two from New Jersey, USA. She has had two natural births with two completely different experiences. Her first bubba was conceived with the help of IVF and her birth was a hospital transfer from a birth center. It was over 24 hours long, exhausting, and looking back Aubrey could see that she was scared and alone for almost all of it. She had meconium present when the midwife offered to break her water during transition which meant a hospital transfer. She still managed to birth naturally and was so very proud of that and thankful for the angel nurse that stepped in and guided her through the last stages before meeting her daughter. When her baby girl was 8 months old she found out she was pregnant again! Which was a HUGE shock. It took weeks to sink in that it was really happening again. Her and her husband had gone through IVF with their first due to her husband's sperm quality. And since her husband had worked incredibly hard on his fertility with lifestyle changes and it obviously had such a great effect on him that it resulted in their little boy being made. Aubrey wanted his birth to be different and she is so incredibly thankful to share that it was. She wrote to me that ”Thanks to your podcast. Seriously Anna, it was all thanks to you and everything I learned from the incredible Mamas you have hosted!!” And of course it wasn't all thanks to me. But I just love these messages and it reaffirms the power of storytelling! This time there were absolutely no cervical checks, no breaking waters and no birth centers. For her baby boy's birth there were independent midwives, plenty of room for fears to heal, incredibly loving prenatal care, connection to her husband, and space for his birth to be sacred and special in her own home. He was born ten minutes before the midwife's arrival and there was no drama to it. It was peaceful and they loved that it was just them. They had all of the support they needed over the phone and they just let birth be birth. Curious about Aubrey? My guest for this episode, Courtney, had two very different out-of-hospital births to share and each one brings so many lessons. Courtney's first birth is a beautiful story, that also taught her a lot about who she was, who she wanted to become, and what she needed to do to become that woman for herself, for her family, her new little daughter, and for her next birth when that time came. And between her first and second birth, she did the work and exploration and growth she needed to transform into that version of herself she knew she was, but hadn't embodied fully prior. She learned what it meant to trust her intuition to advocate for the care she needed, to find a birth team that would respect and support her just as she was. I am honored to share the birth story of one of my past students who had an extraordinary amount of growth and revelations of her own power and agency in her pregnancy and birth. This is one of those stories that really gets to the heart of the change I would love to see in our birth culture. In this story, you'll hear my guest share:How she navigated a system where she wasn't feeling that her choices were being respectedHow she came to find the strength in herself to become fully aware and responsible for all the choices she made for her birth to have the birth of her dreams Why she chose to not only transfer from a hospital to home birth, but to even opt out of her midwifery care to hire traditional birth keepersI know if you have been leaving your prenatal visits questioning your choices, feeling like your choices aren't being heard or respected, if you are questioning whether your birth team is there for what's best for you rather than simply there to follow the standard routine, then I know you're going to find inspiration in this episode as we glean insight into how to make autonomous choices in birth from an inspiring mother.Find info about Rh blood type & Rhogam (Anti-D) from Sara Wickam Watch now at NaturalBirthCompass.com/FreeClassAfter watching this 15 minute video, you will know:What physiologic birth really is and why stages of labor, lists of hormones, and cervical dilation rates are not enoughThe most common points in labor where tissue damage occurs and how to prevent the causes of tears or episiotomiesThe difference between being 10 cm and being ready to push_______________________Further info & opportunities: Open your breath, connect to your pelvic floor, and prepare to relax with the Stillpoint Prenatal Breathwork Worshop Recording for free at NaturalBirthCompass.com/BreatheFree. When it comes to homebirth, safety is always the number one question on everyone's mind. Today, I have a wisdom holder who is no stranger to the question of safety in birth, homebirth in particular. Dr. Stuart Fischbein is an obstetrician who left the conventional medical system decades ago after being exposed to the nature of the midwifery model of care. He went on to assist families and their midwives in homebirth to create a model for families with various presentation of birth to still enjoy a safe homebirth whenever possible, including breech babies and twins. Dr. Stu will share insights into what safety really means in birth and the question of whether research and evidence based medicine have answers to safety in physiologic birth. Alissa shares her first birth story of her son, born in November 2019. Her partner and her decided to stop taking any precautions after their May 2018 wedding. She believed she would come home with a honeymoon baby, but that did not happen. Being the planner she is, she quickly turned to tracking her cycle with 7 months of negative pregnancy tests. She took her concerns to her OBGYN and her OB agreed to run a blood screening and sperm mobility test. She was diagnosed with PCOS and her partner had few head sperm, which gave them a 2% chance of conceiving naturally. They decided to move right onto IVF with a successful first transfer. Around 35 weeks pregnant, Alissa woke up with her left leg swollen to the size of a “Frankenstein Leg” and had Deep Vein Thrombosis. Between the DVT and a breech baby, she was given a c-section date at 39 weeks. She had to deliver in a normal Operating Room over an OB Operating Room and the team did not allow her husband in the room. She struggled with postpartum anxiety and credits that mostly to issues with breastfeed that led to pumping and decreased sleep. This is Part 1 of 2. Seetal Savla @SavlaFaire and her husband have been trying to conceive for six years after a diminished ovarian reserve diagnosis. Having experienced a devastating miscarriage and four unsuccessful IVF cycles, Seetal got pregnant on their first donor egg IVF cycle, but sadly suffered a traumatic miscarriage at 9 weeks. Since Mother's Day 2019, Seetal has been documenting her ongoing journey on her blog www.savlafaire.com and in the media to raise awareness of infertility, destigmatise the subject – particularly among South Asian communities – and support others in similar situations. Seetal and Neil are now pregnant again having conceived naturally which is absolutely wonderful news but even when you get pregnant naturally, as you'll hear us discuss, you carry the grief, fear and anxiety of the journey with you throughout the pregnancy. In addition to what we cover in our chat Seetal also mentioned to me her fears around buying or receiving mat clothes, and baby paraphernalia and only feeling able to do it when it was absolutely necessary and I know that's something I and many others will relate to too! As discussed in this episode, please find Seetal's series with Ferring Pharamceuticals here. You can also find the reports we discussed below. Brief Summary: An easy natural conception for her first child at 39 years old led Leann and her husband to believe that it would not take that long to conceive their second child. Several years later with a miscarriage along the way, Leann shares her “Pregnancy After 40” story and journey, including an emergency induction due to high blood pressure which turned into preeclampsia. Many hours later, Leann's daughter was born several weeks early and had to return to the hospital days after being discharged because their pediatrician initially disregarded the seriousness of their newborn's jaundice, which required an admittance to the hospital again where their baby almost needed a blood transfusion. July is Fibroid Awareness Month - studies show that Black women suffer from fibroids 2-3 times more than white women and tend to experience fibroids at a younger age and often more severely. With those numbers, Black women are also 2 to 3 times more likely to undergo surgery to manage their fibroids. With such a common occurrence, few women are open about their experience, know about treatment options, or what options they have after having a myomectomy. In this episode, Mabel walks us through her infertility journey, a pregnancy with fibroids, advocating for a trial of labor after laparoscopic myomectomy, and a redemptive vaginal birth. At 26 years old, she found out that she had fibroids, which she would never have expected. Researching and working with her care provider, Mabel decided the best option for her would be to get her fibroids removed through surgery. Knowing that she and her husband would want to expand their family, she decided to move forward with laparoscopic myomectomy. A minimally invasive procedure to remove fibroids, but also provides a better chance for having vaginal births. Whether it be abdominal or laparoscopic, most myomectomy candidates are not offered a trial of labor. When she found out she was pregnant, Mabel was aware of the odds, but standing firm in her wants and needs, she went through a dozen no's before meeting a doctor who was willing to step out of his comfort zone and support her. This episode covers a myriad of topics; diastasis recti, pelvic floor health, fibroids, blood transfusions, hemorrhaging, drawing boundaries with family, but most importantly, advocating for ourselves as Mabel puts it "having the nerve" to stand up and demand what we want. This story was too wild and awesome not to share. Lexxaus and I recorded this just to make sure we had a recorded recollection of what happened the night our baby girl was born, but we decided to put it out there for others to hear. Short preview: Indy was born on our back porch, in a tub, with no one here but Lexx and me! This will be one of the best stories either of us could tell for the rest of our lives, and we hope you enjoy it too.
