In this episode, I explore the dynamics of sibling and group play therapy sessions in Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT). I walk through why and when it makes sense to pair siblings together in the playroom—especially when there's a shared experience like divorce or trauma, or a relational issue like constant conflict. I also share considerations for pairing unrelated children in group sessions, including ideal age ranges, complementary personalities, and shared goals. You'll hear about practical strategies for managing the extra complexity in these sessions, including the importance of using children's names consistently, documenting carefully, and maintaining attunement to each child as well as their relationship. I also talk about how group dynamics naturally encourage kids toward emotional balance and regulation. Whether you've been hesitant to try sibling or group sessions, or you're already offering them and want to be more intentional, this episode offers insights to help you feel more confident and prepared. On this episode we heard from Sarah-Louise who's a mother of one 10 year old child...and that's the issue! She's sick and tired of people commenting on her having only one child "your child's lonely", "your child's spoiled"..."you're selfish for not giving your kid a sibling" etc.
Pumped Up Parenting | The Best Advice that NO ONE ELSE GIVES YOU about Raising Kids in Today's World
Parenting is never perfectly balanced, and sometimes it is not even close. In this heart-opening conversation, I sit down with Daryl Potter, a dad and author who raised two kids on very different paths: one with complex medical needs and one who still needed his own place in the spotlight. You will hear how his family navigated daily medical crises and palliative care while keeping his son seen, secure, and deeply loved. We talk about simple habits that change everything. Schedule real one-on-one time. Take your kids on date nights even when life feels chaotic. Keep small promises that matter, like a nightly thirty-minute game session even if video games are not your thing. These tiny rituals add up to a confident, connected child who knows they are special on their own. When family support fell through, Daryl and his wife built a chosen family and created a new kind of vacation rhythm so each parent could rest while their daughter received the care she needed. Their story models kindness, commitment, flexibility, and courage for kids and adults alike. What if one powerful moment with a teacher could change your child's entire future—and your own? In this heartfelt episode of the Child Care Genius Podcast, Brian and Carol sit down with child care business owner Jessica Lloyd, who shares how one life-altering conversation with her daughter's teacher sparked her journey into entrepreneurship. From music therapy to leading a thriving child care business in Utah, Jessica opens up about the personal experiences, struggles, and deep “why” that shaped her mission to build something truly special for children and families. Listen in as Jessica reflects on her transition from corporate dreams to the hands-on reality of child care ownership. She reveals how her center was born not from a business plan—but from a mother's determination to create a space where her children would be genuinely seen, supported, and loved. You'll hear about the center that changed her daughter's developmental trajectory, and the teacher who simply said, “We'll see,” instead of accepting limits. That simple act of belief became the foundation for everything Jessica would go on to build. Join us as Jessica shares how she now pours that same love and belief into her team, intentionally investing in leadership development, reading together as a staff, and creating a workplace culture rooted in connection. Her story reminds us that a strong mindset isn't just about staying positive—it's about staying grounded in purpose, surrounding yourself with the right people, and never losing sight of why you started. Tune in to this episode to hear how coaching gave Jessica the clarity, structure, and community she needed to thrive—and why she believes every child care owner needs a tribe. Plus, don't miss her thoughts on attending destination conferences (yes, including Mexico!) and the powerful shift that happens when you finally step away from the noise and focus on building your dream with intention. When Kath Carlin finally decided to stop trying for a second baby, part of her was kind of relieved. The journey had been arduous, and privately, she felt like she was only meant to be a mum of one. She wasn't quite sure she was allowed to say it out loud, but she wasn't sure she even wanted a second baby. And then, she fell pregnant naturally. But her journey wouldn't end there. There'd be a potential diagnosis on the cards, but ultimately, she would lose that baby, too. After that, she was done with trying and now, a year and a half later, she couldn't be happier to be the mum of one child. It's surprising to me that in 2025, this is still a pretty unique story, and here, we explore why. Where does that pressure to have multiple kids come from? How does she feel all about it now? Here, we explore this and so much more, including her incredibly successful career as a makeup artist and the hilarious birth story that wasn't the red carpet plan she had in mind.—Thanks for listening! “It’s really hard to be happier than your unhappiest child.” When one child is battling mental health challenges, the whole family feels the weight. In this heartfelt episode, Justin and Kylie answer a powerful question from a mum of four: How do I help my younger kids cope as their older brother struggles with depression? This episode is a must-listen for families navigating the emotional ripple effects of mental health struggles. With deep compassion and practical insight, the Coulsons explore how parents can support siblings through confusion, grief, and change—without losing themselves in the process. KEY POINTS: Acknowledge the Grief: Siblings often feel like they’ve “lost” their brother—even though he’s still physically there. Challenge Unhelpful Stories: Gently correct thoughts like “It’s my fault” or “He doesn’t love me anymore.” Explain Simply & Honestly: Offer age-appropriate explanations without going into detail or glossing over pain. Give Permission to Feel Joy: Let siblings know they don’t have to walk on eggshells or suppress happiness. Empower Them to Help: Involve siblings in small, non-burdensome acts of kindness to build connection and hope. Reinforce Connection: Help your struggling child feel included without pressure or guilt. QUOTE OF THE EPISODE: “No matter how angry you are, no matter how sad you are, our love for you is bigger than what you're feeling right now.” RESOURCES MENTIONED: HappyFamilies.com.au – for parenting support and podcast submissions. ACTION STEPS FOR PARENTS: Talk About It: Start a family conversation that names the reality and reassures: “This isn’t about you. This is something your brother is going through. And we’re in it together.” Model Calm Love: Your children are watching how you respond. Demonstrating patience and compassion teaches them resilience and loyalty. Create Joyful Moments: Take siblings out of the house for fun, connection, and relief from emotional tension. Invite Micro-Acts of Connection: Encourage simple, no-pressure gestures like watching a movie together or sharing a meme. Build Your Village: As a parent, find someone to support you—you don’t have to carry this alone. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It's heartbreaking to think about kids with no safe place to sleep while the world moves on around them. Every night, thousands of young people are left to figure out survival on their own, often with no one to turn to. It's not just about homelessness—it's about lost potential, broken trust, and futures slipping away before they even start. When communities come together, though, even small actions can begin to turn that tide and give these kids a real shot at something better. Sharyn Abbott is an entrepreneur with decades of experience in businesses like graphic design, travel, and training. A former guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show, she's known for helping people build better businesses and lives. What are your children learning in school about man and what he should do in life? What kind of "self" are they being encouraged to develop? Do you even know? James Lindsay joins me to discuss the Marxian religious questions our children are being taught to ask in school, how the answers are purging enlightenment values from American culture, one lost "self" at a time. He is a leading expert on Critical Race Theory, which leads him to reject it completely. Being called resilient can be strange compliment to accept. On one hand the ability to “bounce back” from difficult experiences or to adapt to adversity and move forward is most certainly something to be proud of. But often in order to be considered resilient, you have to walk through the fire, which is not exactly what anyone dreams of.Resiliency is a muscle and it has to be moved. Most of the movement comes through negative or traumatic experiences. In this episode we speak to author of the trilogy memoir series ResilientAF. Hi mamas. Today, I'm excited to have Joy Netanya Thompson on the podcast. Joy is a writer who covers the intersection of motherhood, culture and identity and whose writing has appeared on sites like Parents, Motherwell, Romper, Coffee & Crumbs, and she's also the author of the substack newsletter, Midweek Joy. She lives in LA with her husband and 8-year-old daughter. This is a rich and raw episode where Joy shares with me her experience of becoming a mother, the traumatic birth of her daughter and how this, amongst other factors including postpartum depression, shaped her decision to have no more children. We discuss the inner conflict this decision has brought about for us both, the considerations of both our own needs and those of our existing children in this decision, and how the lack of societal and personal support plays a role in this too. In this beautiful conversation, we also discuss:The journey to knowing yourself better through motherhood, in terms of the mirrors your children hold up which allow you to see yourself in a more honest and truthful light than what you might have experienced before. We discuss parts work and the journey of seeing and accepting the different parts of ourselves that live within us and have been shaped by our own childhoods. Our experiences of mothering without a blueprint, how this can play out with regard to our desire to parent differently, and the process of reparenting while parenting. Joy's experience of birth, her feelings of failure surrounding it and her journey towards acceptance. We also touch on her experience with EMDR as treatment for this trauma. The beauty of the moments where we delight in our children, the honour of having a front-row seat on our children's lives, and the importance of them feeling this love above all else. And so much more. I hope you enjoy listening to this conversation today as much as I loved having it. A 5-year-old child and his parents boarded a plane heading for a new life. They were Syrian refugees, who fled conflict in their country and then lived a difficult life in a refugee camp. Now they were heading to Canada. But soon after arriving, there's a problem. The child has hemophilia and due to hemophilia complications, a minor injury while traveling became a major concern. Add to this a language barrier and trying to understand a new culture. Dr. Robert Klaassen, a pediatric hematologist and lead of the Comprehensive Hemophilia Care Clinic at Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa, Canada, shares his experience working with a family who overcame incredible barriers and the lessons learned along the way.
