We know that Greta Van Susteren was doing legal analysis for CNN during the O.J. Simpson murder trial, but what was her friend and colleague Geraldo Rivera doing at the time? Simpson's lawyers to critique the autopsies of Nicole Simpson and Ron Goldman during Simpson’s murder trial. Dr. Baden tells Greta Van Susteren what he thinks of the FX series’ portrayal of him, the backlash he faced from his police department for being a defense witness rather than prosecution, and why he recommended Simpson be put on suicide watch. It’s quite possible that no one knows more about the O. J. Simpson murder case than Simpson’s former agent Mike Gilbert. After working together for over a decade and having a close friendship for years beyond that, Gilbert is well informed in the life of O.J. Simpson, and even confesses to helping him get away with murder. In his 2008 book How I Helped O.J. Get Away With Murder, Gilbert reveals the unvarnished truth of what happened, including how he helped deceive the jury and feels deeply responsible for the “Not Guilty” verdict. Today Gilbert gives Greta Van Susteren an exclusive interview detailing O.J. and Nicole’s life before the murders. In this edition of Greta Talk, Gilbert gives insight into Nicole’s affair with O.J.’s best friend and fellow NFL player Marcus Allen, which he believes is connected to O.J.’s motive. Gilbert also divulges what he thought O.J.’s defense team did “dirty”, who O.J. confessed to the murders to, and he even recalls his first thought, “he finally did it”, upon learning Nicole was murdered. In this latest installment of Greta Talk, we continue talking about the notorious O.J. Simpson murder case, but now with a major inside source. Gloria Allred has been practicing law for over 40 years with the leading women’s rights law firm in the country, and she was just the person Nicole Brown Simpson’s family wanted to represent them during the People of the State of California v. Orenthal James Simpson criminal murder case. Allred has become a highly esteemed women’s and civil rights advocate over the years after representing clients in numerous high-profile cases… but this case might’ve been the biggest. Throughout the murder trial (and still to this day) Allred made a point to shed light on the issue of domestic abuse, something she says “often escalates until the victim ends up dead”. While that certainly seems to be the issue here, Allred reveals how hard it is to understand why O.J. was sentenced to a mere 500 hours of counseling and charity work after beating Nicole black and blue just five years before her murder. Despite being charged with battery O.J. was given the minimum sentence, which Allred believes “was an insult to battered women” and “didn’t accomplish any of the purposes of the criminal justice system”. In this edition of Greta Talk, Greta Van Susteren relives the infamous case, as it was the one that more or less launched her career. Before the time of On the Record, Greta was focused on practicing law when CNN asked her to do legal analysis on the Simpson trial, to which she agreed. Working out of a tiny, cold studio in Washington, D.C., Greta relied on a live-feed of the trial that was taking place in California, and at times even played a little Tetris when the trial got dull. Well maybe not a little; she ended up getting tendinitis in her elbow from playing so much! Greta Van Susteren recently had one of the best days of her entire life. Let’s rewind to about a year and a half ago– The On the Record host receives an email from a distraught viewer in need of some help. Kris Detrow and her husband John are desperately trying to bring a little girl from Uganda (who they had fallen in love with and wanted to adopt) home with them to the U.S. 6-year-old Leticia was tossed out by her birth parents as a child because she was deaf and her family believed she would put a hex on them. It was in a filthy Ugandan orphanage where Kris was volunteering that Kris and Leticia instantly connected. After a long and difficult process filled with multiple hurdles, Leticia was allowed to travel to the U.S. to live with the Detrows. Fast-forward to present time, and Leticia is happy and healthy living life with her new family (including two amazing older brothers). After a few tests it is determined that Leticia can undergo cochlear implant surgery that could possibly allow her to hear for the first time. Once the implant surgery was complete, “Aunt Greta” made sure to attend the big day when the cochlear implant would finally be activated, and what happened when that implant was activated is what made this day one of the best of Greta’s (and Leticia’s) life. Awards season is in full swing and the film The Big Short has already racked up an impressive number of nominations thanks to brilliant director Adam McKay (the cast is pretty great, too). McKay joins Greta Van Susteren to talk about the film, based on the book The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine by Michael Lewis, which McKay admits he read in one day before deciding it was his dream project. The Big Short tells the story of the 2007 housing crisis which silently unfolded during the year prior to the 2008 stock market crash. While the details are certainly complicated, Greta is a big fan of the way the film explains the complex crisis to the average movie-goer. In this edition of Greta Talk, McKay, whose work usually falls on the comedy side (he directed Step Brothers, Anchorman, Talladega Nights, etc.), tells Greta how his film The Other Guys inspired him to investigate the housing crisis, and ultimately make the “trauma-dey” The Big Short.
