Men's Basketball at Ohio State Starts at 1:00 Bienvenue! Recorded remotely this week because Seth's 19 year old ski boots exploded. Michigan wins a defense-optional shootout, they rebounded half their misses which ended up being the difference (Ohio State just couldn't out-rebound Goldin and Wolf). There's a big difference between Goldin being the role guy and Tschetter being the role guy, so why did Goldin only get 24 minutes? Officiating in this game and how it relates to the Bo Ryan era. Don't elbow someone in the head but also don't put your head into someone's elbow. Roddy Gayle returns to Columbus and silences the boos out of timeouts. Stop missing dunks. Neither team got a double digit lead, the game was tense the whole time.  [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP]  2. Men's Basketball vs Purdue Starts at 24:50 Michigan avenges a terrible loss to become co-favorites to win the Big Ten. Braden Smith plays an insane 12 minutes to open the game for Purdue, making the first half extra frustrating. His mid-range shots weren't even bad shots, necessarily. Rubin Jones and Roddy Gayle combined for 20 points and played excellent, annoying defense. They came through in a way that was required to win this game. Michigan shoots below their season 3-point average but only had 11 turnovers. They also got to the line a lot (off of some calls that weren't great). Caleb Furst should've fouled out in the first six minutes! The physicality of the Big Ten is more than Dusty May realized. Purdue had zero bench points.  3. Hot Takes and Hockey vs Minnesota Starts at 49:12 Takes hotter than Michigan basketball in a three point game. Michigan gets slightly more than a split against Minnesota which decently increases their NCAA tournament chances. A split with Ohio State and a first round win in the Big Ten Tournament should do it. Minnesota was out-shooting Michigan 12-2 to start the game on Saturday, not great! Welcome back, Michael Hage. Tyler Duke played a nice game when everyone else was gassed. Bye week upcoming so we won't know much about tournament chances for a while.  4. Tournament Outlooks Starts at 1:16:40 Men's basketball is now projected to win the Big Ten but Wisconsin is looming with the easier schedule. Purdue and Michigan State both finish with a gauntlet. Of Michigan's last six games, four or five of them will be against tournament teams. Finishing 3-3 could maybe be enough to win a share of the Big Ten and get a banner. It's been a while since it's come down to Michigan and Michigan State down the stretch. Torvik has Michigan jumping between 3 and 4 seeds, which takes win margin into account. Hockey is projected to play Penn State in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament. They're now 80% to make the NCAA tournament but everyone ahead of them in the Pairwise rankings is pretty much a lock. The worst tournament in sports is suddenly in Michigan's favor! There's a regional in Toledo but Michigan probably doesn't go there. Shout out to Hockey Bear.  MUSIC: "Real Life"—The Marias "MUTT"—Leon Thomas "THE BADDEST"—Joey Valence and Brae “Across 110th Street”—JJ Johnson and his Orchestra

Jesse Nelson and Matt Hamilton roll on for this Hall Monitor Monday, as they continue their conversation about the Badgers dropping the ball in March once again with Friday's loss to James Madison in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Jesse and Matt discuss if we should change the bar/expectations from making the Sweet 16 under Bo Ryan to just making the NCAA Tourney under Greg Gard. Matt also questions if Gard is indeed the rest person for the program in the NIL era. Benny Bets himself joins for an early-week edition of Betting with Brust. Jesse and Matt pick Ben's brain as a former Badgers player on the Badgers extending their Sweet 16 drought to 7 straight seasons, if the Badgers will make the Sweet 16 in the next 4 seasons with Greg Gard still as head coach, and if it's time for AD Chris McIntosh to possibly move on from Gard. Ben also tells Jesse to stop complaining about how much money he lost in Dubuque, and they all give a lock for the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament before picking a side in Primetime's Prop of the Week. Throwing Stones includes a question about what was "lost in translation" related to the alleged theft/gambling debts of Shohei Othani's interpreter. Jesse and Matt wrap up with Cross-Talk with the Great Dane Huddle, hosted by Alex Strouf and special guest Pablo Iglesias of WKOW, and they give their thoughts on today's poll question and bid farewell to Matt before he embarks on his European curling tour.

(With March Madness upon us and C26 Swim School in progress, we thought it was a good time to revisit an old podcast with Zak Showalter and how he started training for Ironman after playing in the Final Four). Sorry about the intro music. haha.  Imagine playing basketball in front of 70,000 people and millions on TV. Today's guest, Zak Showalter, did just that for the University of Wisconsin. His career took him to 2 different Final Fours and four Sweet 16's and now he's tackling Ironman. He's graduated, stepped away from basketball, and turned his sights on Ironman Wisconsin. Our goal for this podcast was to see how many lessons learned from Zak's days at Wisconsin under Hall of Fame coach Bo Ryan translate into triathlon. As it turned out, a lot of them do. We start with some of Zak's endurance background and early training challenges. Then go into how what he learned on the basketball floor can be translated into Ironman training:  Were you ever into endurance sports before? What it's like hanging out with Packer's QB Aaron Rodgers  What it was like to work with Michael Jordan's strength coach When he decided he wanted to do an Ironman  How he deals with Winter training in Wisconsin What's it like going from a high exposure team sport to an isolated training world? A coach's message “Play hard, play smart, play together, and have fun.” Race like you train - Zak tells us how what he learned from the daily grind of college basketball practice and how he thinks it can be applied to triathlon training and best set him up for the race. Ups and Downs - How to stay level headed and on the same path when faced with setbacks of a big loss or the the high of a big win.  Patience -  Wisconsin basketball is built on patience, both in execution and sytem. Zak gives us a perspective on how they looked at a long season or career and how the philosophies can apply to Ironman training. Emotions- He takes us in the locker room before Wisconsin faced off with a 38-0 Kentucky team at the Final Four. How is it possible to stay calm when you're running out in front of 70,000 people to play a game watched by millions? He gives us a very simple solution.  Diet: How did you guys eat? Was there a big focus on nutrition or were you just kids? Has that changed as you train for Ironman?  Here are a couple videos of Zak in his playing days: - His salute to Aaron Rodgers after hitting a buzzer beater against Florida - High School State Championship Opening Tip Dunk Zak on Instagram: zshowalter3 Zak on Twitter: @ZShowbball333 Facebook: CrushingIron Twitter: CrushingIron Instagram: C26_Triathlon www.crushingiron.com

Jim Rutledge and Alex Strouf are back for their third show in a row, and they react to the Badgers basketball season reaching a new low after their 74-70 loss at Indiana on Tuesday night. They gives their thoughts on if Greg Gard's team can bounce back after going 2-6 in the month of February, and Jim asks if there's any chance they could actually miss the NCAA Tournament for the 2nd year in a row? They examine the unsettling trend of early-season success followed by late-season failures for Gard's tenure as HC, and Jim lays out the standard for the "Bo Ryan Bar of Success" for Badgers basketball. Mark Tauscher joins Jim Rutledge and Alex Strouf, and they immediately ask him about the news of an upcoming Aaron Rodgers biography by Ian O'Connor titled "Out of Darkness: The Mysteries of Aaron Rodgers." Jim also asks Tausch if Gutey deserves to be strutting like a peacock with his confident comments at the NFL Combine this week, and Strouf asks where, or if, the Packers will take any big swings in free agency this offseason. They also hit on where Green Bay ranked in the NFLPA's player team report cards released today, Tausch gives a temperature check on Badgers basketball and if he'd be willing to replace Mark Murphy as the Packers' next CEO... During Minute to Win It presented by North and South Seafood & Smokehouse, Primetime puts "NBA guy" Alex Strouf's knowledge to the test by asking him to guess the players with the top-9 odds to win the 2023-24 NBA regular-season MVP.

Jim Rutledge and Alex Strouf are joined by downtown Molly Brown for the first two segments of the show. They question the validity of the article, and Jim lays out the STARK differences between gentlemen's clubs and strip clubs. Jim, Alex and Molly also talk about if a significant other has ever imposed overly-restrictive expectations on them, and Jim and Molly tear about the "game" Alex Strouf uses to use to get a date. Jim and Alex return to yesterday's conversation regarding the Badgers basketball program under Greg Gard. They ask if the Bo Ryan standard is a realistic expectation for the program moving forward as well as what it would take for AD Chris McIntosh to even begin considering finding Gard's replacement. They wrap up Hour 1 by featuring the High Life Dive Bar of the Week: R&J's Saloon in Mazomanie, Wisconsin, and Jim and Strouf talk about some of their fondest "High Life" moments.

Bo Ryan is principal of the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts Middle School in Hartford, CT. Ryan also served as a Principal for Woodside Intermediate School in Cromwell, CT. He is passionate about building and sustaining professional learning communities; and led both schools to Model PLC status. Ryan has been an educator for 27 years with a background as a teacher, coach, director, adjunct professor, and administrator. His first job was as a graduate assistant football coach for Syracuse University where he was a full time football coach and graduate student. He was a part of 2 bowl victories and 1 Big East Championship with the team. His teaching career began at JC Clark Elementary in the city of Hartford. In the school, Ryan created various before school and after school programs for students in the neighborhood. His daily morning gym program was open for all students an hour before school and served hundreds of students on a daily basis. Also at JC Clark, he started a basketball team in the school to help the students most at-need. The season was from October to May. Ryan also coached football, basketball, and served as director of the National Youth Sports Program at the local college during the summer. In addition, Ryan taught a graduate class at St. Joseph's College for 4 years on using PLCs as the system for creating interventions. Ryan is a board member for the Connecticut Association of Schools Student Services Team. As a teacher, he was named both educator and teacher of the year. As a director, he led his camp, NYSP, to national recognition. As a coach, he coached and supported athletes at both the collegiate and high school levels. At Woodside Intermediate School, they also were named a model SRBI and PBIS sight and welcomed visitors from all over. The school also served as a Professional Development School with Central Connecticut State University with college students, staff, and interns in the building at all times. A partnership was also created with Wesleyan University athletic department as athletes visited the school during recess and other times to support students. During his time at Woodside, Ryan presented on Professional Learning Communities to educators in CT and Massachusetts, presented on reading instruction to the CT Reading Association, and presented on RTI or SRBI in CT. Ryan helped open at brand new school in Hartford in a renovated factory. During his time, the school was selected a model professional learning community just 4 years after it opened. They were also selected a Solution Tree Success Story and featured on their website. As an educator, Ryan believes in relationship building with students and connecting with the community, as evident in 25 years of home visits. Ryan is currently a Solution Tree associate and certified PLC, RTI, and priority school presenter. He has presented across the United States on creating and sustaining PLCs in schools with the focus on the team. Bo earned undergraduate degrees from Western Connecticut State University, a master's degree from Syracuse University, and his sixth-year degree from Southern Connecticut State University. Key Takeaways: If you want to create a culture of collaboration you have to be creative in finding time to support it. You have to create templates for teachers to use if you are to maximize the time and coach them up. If you are to track the success of kids you need to break learning up into periods of time that provide data. Good instruction starts with collaborative teams. One of his chapters lines out the whole system for improved teaching and learning. You need to create systems when you don't have certified personnel that are needed. Tight loose leadership allows teachers to place the students where they're needed in a way that teachers can reach them. Reading is essential for students to improve academically. Make sure you hire people that have a high commitment to students and being good teammates regardless of years of experience. CREC calls them Associate Instructors. It's hard to create interventions when you aren't teaching skills for success and focusing on grades. Everything needs to be based on mastery of the standard. Its' critical to constantly be a learner, believe in your teachers, and continually improve. Stay Connected: Book: Brilliance in the Building

Key Takeaways: It's important to recognize where we have benefited and give back. Educators have to realize that the student experience isn't always the same as their own personal experience when they were in school. We improve ourselves and make the culture better by realizing and utilizing the importance of teams. Team meetings have to be guided by a process and coached by a leader first if they are going to be effective. Tight loose leadership is key if you are to have effective PLCs in your building. It's important to focus on solutions rather than continue to highlight problems. Implement systems that change mindsets.  PLC work has to be research based. In March 2000, the eighth-seeded Wisconsin Badgers rushed through the West Regional, defeating Arizona, LSU, and Purdue to claim the Badgers first Final Four appearance in more than 59 years. Though the Badgers Cinderella run ended with Final Four loss in Indianapolis to Big Ten foe and eventual national champ Michigan State, that Wisconsin squad helped elevate the Badgers, long a middling Big Ten program, into a March Madness regular.. Wisconsin would make the Big Dance every year over the next 17 seasons, including two additional Final Four runs under Bo Ryan.Today, we're going to discuss that memorable Badgers run with the team's leading scorer, 6-9 forward Mark Vershaw, and seek to understand how an 8-8 Big Ten team, one that never cracked the AP Top 25, one that didn't feature a single all-conference selection – not even an honorable mention nod – defied the odds and captured a spot in the Final Four. The Stories Page - https://19nine.com/blogs/newsOur other Podcasts - https://19nine.com/blogs/news/19nine-podcastsLeave us a Review!APPLE PODCASTSSPOTIFY19Nine's YouTube ChannelWatch video interviews (Aaron's YouTube)FOLLOW!19Nine Instagram19Nine Twitter
