Our guest on this week's episode is Col. Ted Silvester USMC (Ret.) and VP, marketing & development, for the  Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. Each year, the United States Marine Corps Reserve and its partners undertake one of the nation's largest toy drives, Toys for Tots. The organization's goal is to assure that all children have toys for Christmas morning. It takes an army – or rather a Marine Corps - of volunteers and corporate partners to pull it off. Col. Silvester shares about the logistics behind the annual campaign. As we close our 2023, it is natural to look ahead to 2024. While 2023 was a down year for logistics, there is some hope that conditions will improve in the coming year. A new report from Prologis offers some insights into prospects for the logistics sector and the major trends that will affect the industry in 2024.Electric vehicles (EV) for last-mile delivery remain in demand around the world, according to a recent market report from research firm Global Market Estimates. The group says the EV market for last-mile delivery will grow at a nearly 16% compoundannual growth rate (CAGR) between 2023 and 2028, driven largely by demand formore sustainable business practices in general, as well as government policiesand incentives to purchase EVs. CSCMP's Supply Chain Quarterly  also offers a podcast series called Supply Chain in the Fast Lane.  It is co-produced with the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals.  Go to your favorite podcast platform to subscribe and to listen to past and future episodes.Articles and resources mentioned in this episode:Toys for TotsPrologis says global freight recession will reverse in 2024Report shows EV market for last mile delivery set for growthGet episode transcriptsVisit Supply Chain QuarterlyListen to CSCMP and Supply Chain Quarterly's Supply Chain in the Fast Lane podcastSend feedback about this podcast to podcast@dcvelocity.comPodcast is sponsored by: PERCOther linksAbout DC VELOCITYSubscribe to DC VELOCITYSign up for our FREE newslettersAdvertise with DC VELOCITYTop 10 Supply Chain Management Podcasts

Sleep in Heavenly Peace (0:00:00) We have a question for you: How many of you listening are wishing you were in bed right now? Some days, we might feel like our beds are our best friends, and all we want to do is curl up in a warm ball of pillows and sheets and never leave ever. Our beds are our little squares of refuge from stress and responsibility we don't want to think about. But how would you feel if you never had a bed? There is an unfortunately large population of people living in the US that don't have a proper bed to sleep in at night. This can cause major damage to sleep, which leads to major physical and emotional issues. This is where Sleep in Heavenly Peace comes in – a non-profit organization dedicated to delivering bunk beds to children and families in need. Joining us on the show is Amy Andrew, a president for one of the organization's chapters. Saturnalia (0:13:10) When I think of Christmas, I think of hanging lights, wreaths of greenery, feasting with friends and family, and giving gifts. Do you want to hear something I was shocked to learn?  All of these traditions were originally part of a different December holiday, one that celebrated the pagan god Saturn. With us on the show is Dr. Tyler Creer, a professor of ancient Roman history at Brigham Young University, to tell us a little bit about the history of Saturnalia. Resolving Conflict in Private and Public (0:31:22) You are standing in line at the sandwich shop and the couple in front of you starts to bicker. As their conversation gets increasingly heated, your levels of discomfort rise. We've all been bystanders to uncomfortable conversations in public, but have you ever found yourself caught in one? What do you do? Conflict resolution expert Emily Taylor joins us today to share how we can know when to resolve issues in public and when to do it in private. She is also here to share how we can avoid and prepare for those unexpected conflicts with strangers. Betrayal to Resilience (0:50:38) It's been proven that in life, a breakup of a long-term relationship is the number two top stressor, coming in behind being widowed. So, what happens if your long-term relationship ends because of betrayal? How do you deal with a broken heart? Dr. Cade North is a self-made expert in turning personal calamities into hilarious tales and the author of Until Death Do Us Apart. She and joins us to discuss how we can go from betrayal to resilience.  Toys for Tots (1:06:31) There's so much excitement in the air with Christmas coming in just a few days. But for some, these next few days will be ones of stress and despair. There are parents around us worried about how they can possibly afford Christmas for their children this year. So how can we spread some Christmas cheer and help them? Toys for Tots is celebrating its 72nd year of existence. They deliver 18 million toys to an average of 7 million children each year. But they need our help to achieve this fantastic feat. President and Chief Executive Officer for the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, retired Marine Corps Lieutenant General Pete Osman, joins us to tell us a little bit about how we can help this year. Italian Christmas (1:22:49) The holidays are a season for food and no one loves to feast more than Italians. But even if you aren't Italian, you can still eat like one. Cooking festive Italian dishes is easier than you think and it's sure to make this holiday merry and delicious. Maria Liberati is an award-winning chef and culinary blogger, known as the “Italian Martha Stewart” by Celebrity Society Magazine. She is here to share her favorite Italian recipes that we can make this holiday season.

Marine Toys for Tots Foundation is a not-for-profit public charity created to assist the U.S. Marine Corps in providing a tangible sign of hope to the nearly 15 million economically disadvantaged children at Christmas. It is an incredible organization that makes millions of children very happy each holiday season. In this edition of Greta Talk, we hear from Toys for Tots President/CEO Lieutenant General Peter Osman, who was also an infantry officer in the US Marine Corps for 37 years. Osman tells the On the Record host how Toys for Tots donates 18 million toys each year, helping make the Christmas of many children very special. Osman goes on to say, “In an ideal world, the child doesn't know where the presents come from. He thinks that Santa has not forgotten him.” Because of heartwarming sentiments like this, Toys for Tots has had endless support from individuals and organizations across the country for the past 68 years, making it the incredible success it is. Toys for Tots has even received the help of First Lady Michelle Obama for the past 7 years!
