2018 was another busy year for the team at Scania and we kept you updated with the latest Scania news right through the year. The launch of a new-generation Scania truck was certainly one of the highlights of the Scania year, however both in Australia and on the global stage, Scania made some big strides on a number of fronts. And while some supply constraints kept overall sales a little lower than they would have liked locally in the year, Scania looks to be heading into a big 2019.
Another successful year for Fuso is drawing to a close and we thought we would look back at some of the main Fuso news stories we covered.

Hino Australia dealerships are now taking delivery of the keenly-anticipated medium-duty offering – the 500 Series Standard Cab. Coming 18 months after the local launch of the Wide Cab variant, the new Standard Cab model looks set to gain a greater market share for Hino in the growing medium-duty segment. The truck is chock full of safety gear and has a wider range of different configurations and variants available. While under the cab is a new five-litre four-cylinder engine. Freightliner are now around six months into an exhaustive local testing regime for the new Freightliner Cascadia. Set to replace the Argosy, in total more than 1.6 million kilometres of Australian testing is being carried out with Freightliner looking to make sure the truck is calibrated correctly for our local conditions. We chatted with Freightliner Director, Stephen Downes, about the new bonneted truck and how important it is for it to start life in Australia on the right foot. There's an updated and improved version of the Isuzu N-Series light-duty truck arriving in dealerships now. Some of the big changes include additional models of the big-selling offering Independent Front Suspension and Rack and Pinion Steering. Isuzu saying this gives the N-Series a more "car-like" feel and makes the truck an even more attractive proposition for tradies and other users who might be coming out of a ute or a van. There's also an updated version of the Isuzu Automated Manual (AMT) in the offering, again, changes that are likely to entice potential first-time truck buyers. We caught up with Isuzu Australia Limited’s Chief Engineer, Product Strategy, Simon Humphries at the Australian launch of the updated N-Series to talk about these changes.

A chat with Hino GM of Brand and Franchise Development, Bill Gillespie. There’s a lot going on at Hino Australia in 2018 and we thought it would be a great time to take a closer look at the big-selling brand. The Japanese brand has enjoyed a hefty 20.3% lift in sales across the first eight months of the year and consistently takes the silver medal position in the monthly sales race. In recent times we’ve seen new offerings like the Poncho Bus come to market, the 300 Series 4x4 and the new-generation 500 Series Wide Cab. On the horizon for Hino is the new 500 Series Standard Cab and a few possible new additions to the range, including a return to the brand’s Aussie roots with a larger focus on Hino Buses and even, potentially, a bonneted Hino truck. 2018 is proving an interesting year for the UD Trucks brand in Australia. Sales of the recently released new-generation Quon are steaming ahead, the truck winning over heavy-duty Japanese truck purchasers in Australia on the back of its strong safety credentials primarily. While sales of the UD Trucks medium-duty offering, the Condor, have slowed. At the official opening of the new Volvo Group Australia headquarters in Brisbane (the new head office for UD Trucks) we caught up with Mark Strambi, UD Trucks Vice President of Sales. Volkswagen Australia dealerships have welcomed the all-new Volkswagen Crafter and the model looks likely to make its presence felt. Boasting an additional 500kg maximum payload (now up to 5.5 tonnes), Volkswagen believes the new Crafter will put some pressure on the Australian light-duty truck market. Available in both cab chassis and double cab chassis, as well as van, the Crafter also welcomes an automatic transmission for the first time. The eight-speed auto sits along side the six-speed manual, while front-wheel drive (with 100mm lower floor), all-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive all feature. In total there are 59 different variants of the new-gen Volkswagen Crafter are being offered in Australia. The launch of the new Crafter comes at a good time for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, global and local sales are on the up and local LCV and light-duty truck sales numbers are also booming. Technology is creating change in the road transport and logistics industry and operators, drivers, other road users and the end customer are all benefiting. Leading the change is telematics, technology that enables operators to monitor their fleet and make changes based around the data collected. One operator that is glad they invested in telematics tech from one of the industry leaders, Verizon Connect, is the well-known country NSW food service business, Midwest Foods. We caught up with the owner of the business, Shane Alderdice, to talk about how they’re benefiting from telematics.
Telematics is becoming increasingly common among Australian truck and vehicle fleets, yet despite the proven benefits some businesses still seem reluctant to invest in the technology. One business that has made the leap is the busy E&S Trading in Victoria.
