At 2022 Fieldays, Adrian Maidment interviewed Thomas from Mainfright about their two electric truck options, the Fuso eCanter and battery-swapping E700. Mainfreight is operating an e-truck between Auckland and Hamilton, with the battery swap taking place at each end of the run.

AUDI SEES ELECTRIC CARS BECOMING AS PROFITABLE AS GAS-POWERED CARS WITHIN 2-3 YEARS - Audi CEO Markus Duesmann says that he sees electric cars becoming as profitable as gas-powered cars within the next two to three years. - Last month, the German premium automotive brand announced an acceleration of its electrification plans. - It included plans to produce their last internal combustion engine in 2033 (if people are still buying them by then), and a plan to only launch new vehicles that are electric by 2026. - A new report from Germany's Spiegel states that Audi CEO Markus Duesmann is currently expecting the brand's electric vehicles to become as profitable as its gas-powered vehicles within the next two to three years. It would imply that Audi's current electric lineup, the e-tron, e-tron Q4, and e-tron GT, are not as profitable as their gas-powered counterparts. The new driving range of the Long Range Model 3, for example, is now 580km, whereas previously it was 657km. The Standard Range Plus, which was previously 508km, now says it can only drive 448km, and the Performance now says 567km where it once said 628km. - Tesla has (finally!) decided to use Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) ratings, which have been in use since 2017 and are used to measure carbon emissions and energy consumption of vehicles. Previously, Tesla stated range figures developed using requirements developed under the Australian Design Rule 81/02 — Fuel Consumption Labelling for Light Vehicles), which was developed in line with the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) rating, before the WLTP was introduced. - Other carmakers in Australia that import electric vehicles, such as Hyundai (eg the Kona EV with 64kWh battery with 484km range), have been using WLTP for some time so it is good to see Tesla move in line with this. The converted Fuso eCanter will be used for emission-free deliveries to cafés in Amsterdam's city centre. - the truck is 5.3 metres long and two metres wide, which makes it suitable for urban use. Empty, the vehicle weighs four tonnes. Two charging specifications are important for the beer transporter: The beer tank, manufactured by Duotank, can hold up to 3,000 litres, and the battery has a capacity of 82.8 kWh. - From the brewery in Den Bosch, a larger truck transports 200 hectolitres of beer (i.e. 20,000 litres) to the outskirts of Amsterdam. There, 30 hectolitres each are pumped into the two mini-tank beer trucks. These then supply around five cafés in the city centre before they have to refill with fresh beer on the outskirts again. Supplying the cafés with the large truck would not be possible even with an electric drive: to protect the quays and bridges, a maximum of 7.5 tonnes is allowed here. The permanent-magnet motor delivers 129 kW (180 hp) via a single-gear transmission in the rear axle. A single charge gives the truck an effective operating range of more than 62 miles (100 km), which is ample for many urban delivery applications. - It sets off at 4am each day from Warburtons' Bolton bakery and delivers fresh bread to as many as 25 different customers, mainly in the central Manchester area. They range from large supermarkets to independent corner shops. In a filing with the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, the Shenzhen-based company said its sales of NEVs, including purely electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, surged 192.03 percent year on year to 41,366 units in June. In the first half of 2021, BYD sold 154,579 NEVs, up 154.76 percent year on year. These standards will provide industry with guidance and drivers with a new clear definition of ‘fully accessible', ‘partially accessible' and ‘not accessible' public EV chargepoints. The design of public chargepoints is already carefully considered by operators. However, consistent standards are crucial for drivers to easily identify which chargepoints are suitable for their needs. This could range from adequate space between bollards, charging units being of a height suitable for wheelchair users, size of the parking bay and the kerb height. · Highlighted Source : https://share.getliner.com/oojoL/ · Original Source : https://www.gov.uk/government/news/uk-government-partners-with-disability-charity-to-set-standards-for-electric-vehicle-chargepoints SOLARWATT FLEXES MUSCLES IN HOME ENERGY STORAGE FIGHT WITH SHELL, TESLA - Germany's Solarwatt, backed by BMW's billionaire shareholder Stefan Quandt, plans to launch a small module that lets homeowners link rooftop solar panels to power storage batteries and electric vehicles to cut costs. The wallbox allows home owners to control when and how much home-produced photovoltaics (PV) power they store, use to charge their electric vehicles (EVs), or sell to the grid. - The Manager Flex device, which looks like a wifi router and will go on sale at around 500 euros ($594), allows the integration of energy flows and gadgets at home, such as rooftop panels, batteries, electric heat pumps and EV-charging boxes. - Solarwatt, also active in France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Britain and Australia, aims to be a top five player by the end of 2022 - Germany is an obvious starting point. With 300,000 stationary batteries, it is the world's top home storage market, ahead of the United States, Japan and Australia. - "The ramp-up of EV sales will directly induce a corresponding run on smart energy products in the household sphere," said PricewaterhouseCoopers partner Steffen Apfel.Sonnen's CEO Oliver Koch said EVs are driving demand for the company's PV systems and batteries: "A third of buyers (of those segments) add a charging device for their EV," he said. - EV makers have started exploring links between EVs and home power circuits, to morph home and car electricity into one, and between EVs and grids, to offer stability services and recycle used batteries. Says Fred at Electrek today: "Some Canadian provinces already have EV incentive programs but unlike the US, there has never been a federal program to reduce the cost of electric vehicles. With the launch of their latest budget, the Canadian government has now announced a new $5,000 incentive program that is not yet completed. The $45,000 cut off point covers vehicles like the Nissan Leaf, Chevy Bolt EV, and Hyundai Ioniq Electric, but all of Tesla’s vehicles are excluded since the base Model 3 starts at $47,000 CAD." The budget says: "“To encourage more Canadians to buy zero-emission vehicles, Budget 2019 proposes to provide $300 million over three years, starting in 2019–20, to Transport Canada to introduce a new federal purchase incentive of up to $5,000 for electric battery or hydrogen fuel cell vehicles with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of less than $45,000. Program details to follow.”" https://electrek.co/2019/03/19/canada-incentive-electric-cars-tesla-excluded/ BMW INEXT PRODUCTION SUV SPIED PLAYING IN THE SNOW com are delighted to get a long video of the new electric BMW: "Our spies were once again in the right place at the right time and had the chance to film the production version of BMW’s iNext electric SUV testing under heavy winter conditions in Sweden. This 5:47-minute video gives us a pretty good look at the vehicle’s dynamics with plenty of accelerations and even some high-speed cornering maneuvers." "The iNext, which might end up being called the i5, will be the electric equivalent of today’s BMW X5 in terms of its dimensions. It will be the Bavarian brand’s most technologically advanced vehicle when it debuts in 2021. Before it, the company will launch the iX3 and i4, in 2019 and 2020 respectively. https://www.motor1.com/news/314022/bmw-inext-spied-video/ GERMANY IS BIGGEST ELECTRIC CAR MARKET IN EUROPE SO FAR IN 2019 "Sales reports for the first two months of 2019 shows that Germany is now the biggest market for all-electric cars in Europe, dethroning Norway." Reports Mark Kane for InsideEV: "It had to happen at some point anyway, as Norway is so much smaller than Germany in population. Norway – at best – can double its BEV sales, reaching 100% BEV market share, while Germany can increase 50-times from less than 2% share to 100%." According to data compiled by industry analyst Matthias Schmidt (schmidtmatthias.de) the top 5 countries in Europe ranked by electric car sales for 2019 so far are: Germany – ≈9,300 Norway – ≈7,900 France – ≈5,900 Netherlands – ≈4,600 UK – ≈2,100 https://insideevs.com/germany-biggest-ev-market-europe/ VOLKSWAGEN THREATENS TO LEAVE GERMANY’S CAR LOBBY VDA IN SPAT OVER E-CARS German carmaker Volkswagen has threatened to quit the country’s influential carmaker lobby group VDA as a dispute over the national car industry’s approach to managing the transition in the transport sector towards low-carbon technologies escalates, the newspaper Welt am Sonntag reports. According to the article, Volkswagen wants the lobby group to budge from its rigid insistence on “technological openness” in the transition and to fully focus instead on electric vehicles. According to cleanenergywire.org: "Volkswagen last week announced it would further accelerate its already ambitious rollout plans for electric mobility. The company that still grapples with the fallout of the dieselgate scandal over manipulated emissions values plans to produce more than 20 million e-cars in the next decade and become fully CO2-neutral by 2050. Reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs today: "In December, Penske received also the first out of ten Freightliner eM2s for testing and is waiting for the 10 Freightliner eCascadia heavy-duty trucks. All the vehicles are to be evaluated in real-world service by various companies to prepare for truck electrification." https://insideevs.com/penske-truck-fuso-ecanter-electric-truck/ CHINA'S EVERGRANDE SAYS IT WILL START MAKING ELECTRIC VEHICLES IN JUNE "Chinese property firm Evergrande Group will start producing its first electric vehicles in June as part of a goal to become the world's largest new energy vehicle (NEV) company within the next three to five years, according to its chairman." Says a Reuters report today: "Hui Ka Yan made the comments at a conference in the eastern city of Tianjin over the weekend, according to a statement published on the company's website on Tuesday. He also said that Evergrande plans to start selling its first electric vehicle model globally "soon," which will use electric car production technology from Swedish car makers Saab and Koenigsegg, and drive systems from Netherlands' e-Traction, according to the statement." https://www.autoblog.com/2019/03/19/china-evergrande-ev-production/ AUDI Q2 E-TRON ELECTRIC CAR CAUGHT TESTING IN THE SNOW "New spy shots provide the very first look at the Audi Q2 E-Tron, which is the fully electric version of the brand’s compact crossover. This one wears some snow as extra concealment, but the images still provide an excellent look at the upcoming EV." According to Chris Bruce for InsideEVs.com today: "Powertrain specs for the electric model are a complete mystery at this point. Speculation indicates the company is aiming for at least a 310-mile (500-kilometer) range on a charge. A recent report suggests that Audi might only sell the Q2 E-Tron in China, and the company might make a long-wheelbase L model exclusively for that market, too." https://insideevs.com/audi-q2-e-tron-electric-car-spy-photo/ LACK OF UNDERSTANDING AND INFORMATION IS PREVENTING MOTORISTS FROM TAKING THE EV PLUNGE Conflicting and confusing information on the latest generation of battery electric vehicles has created a ‘knowledge gap’ for potential buyers, holding them back from choosing an EV as their next purchase, a new White Paper from the UK’s leading consumer champion and new car buying platform, What Car? has found. This is despite 2019 being set to become the year of the electric vehicle, with up to 20 new models scheduled to be launched. Meanwhile, whatcar.com traffic data suggests public interest in EVs is at record levels. In a study of over 9000 motorists, What Car? found 8.4% are already considering a fully electric car as their next vehicle. The What Car? What Fuel? comparison tool, with 80,000 users, also found EVs are already an optimal choice for one in 10 drivers. In comparison, the UK market share of fully electric vehicles was only 0.7% in 2018, meaning electric vehicle sales are achieving just 7% of their sales potential.
