Carroll O'Connor's acting earned him five Emmys and two Golden Globe awards. He was best known for playing the rough, bigoted blue collar family man on the very popular “All in the Family,” a 1970s TV show. Coincidentally, O'Connor grew up in the Queens area of New York where his character Archie Bunker would later live. Mickey Rooney was asked to play Archie but turned it down. Carroll appeared in many movies and TV shows. In his last TV appearance, he starred as police chief Bill Gillespie on the popular “In the Heat of the Night” series. At one time he was considered for the part of the skipper on “Gilligan's Island.” I think he would have been perfect for that role.
In this first episode of the third season, Jack talks to Bill Gillespie. Bill has spent over 30 years in the area of strength and conditioning. He attended Liberty University, where he played football and also was a four-time all-American in track and field. After his playing days, he started a 30-year journey as a strength and conditioning coach at Liberty University, the University of Washington, and with the Seattle Seahawks. While he was working in his field of passion, Bill continued to personally be engaged big time in weightlifting and holds 133 world records. In 2022, at the age of 62, he once again set a record for the bench press, pressing 1,129 pounds. Listen to this episode as Jack speaks with Bill about his journey of pressing on to achieving a world record.Learn more about Jack along with our other guests on the third season of our podcast on my website at jackwwilliams.com/podcast.
On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are slapping old, white racists in the face because they deserve nothing less with the 1967 film from Norman Jewison, In the Heat of the Night. Let's get this out of the way first. Racism is bad and racists are terribly under-educated, fearful people who could use a good dose of empathy and love in their lives. Sure, there's nothing groundbreaking there, but it needs to be said, sadly. Many things have gotten better since the ‘60s, but there's still a lot to be done. This is a cracking good mystery, with a wrinkle for the ages. The small town of Sparta, Mississippi just lost one of its greatest future benefactors: the wealthy and industrious Philip Colbert. In an act of senseless violence, he's left dead in the middle of an alleyway, stripped of all his money. Detective Virgil Tibbs, who happens to be passing through at the time of the murder, is found in the train station and picked up for the crime of being black in the wrong place and at the wrong time. Good thing he's an educated police officer. I shudder to think what would have happened to him were he anyone else. His expertise helps bring new and powerful information about this murder to light. The local police chief, Bill Gillespie, in an unusually progressive fashion, comes to respect Tibbs. The pair work the case, which has more twists and turns than anyone could have guessed. Maybe the institutional racism of the town isn't broken down, but I'd bet you that Gillespie becomes a marginally better person. Small victories are still victories, right? Chris demystifies concepts like controlling air flow and humidity to perfectly capture smoke flavor in food, as well as maintaining the ideal BBQ zone temperature, and the secrets to knowing when a cook is complete, which go beyond internal temperature. Chris gives readers a sturdy foundation of knowledge, then shares foolproof recipes demonstrating these techniques in action with additional tips, so their BBQ comes out perfectly tender with incredible smoky flavor every time. Last, but certainly not least we'll chat with Adam McKenzie the creator of This Jew Can Que. A chat with Hino GM of Brand and Franchise Development, Bill Gillespie. There’s a lot going on at Hino Australia in 2018 and we thought it would be a great time to take a closer look at the big-selling brand. The Japanese brand has enjoyed a hefty 20.3% lift in sales across the first eight months of the year and consistently takes the silver medal position in the monthly sales race. In recent times we’ve seen new offerings like the Poncho Bus come to market, the 300 Series 4x4 and the new-generation 500 Series Wide Cab. On the horizon for Hino is the new 500 Series Standard Cab and a few possible new additions to the range, including a return to the brand’s Aussie roots with a larger focus on Hino Buses and even, potentially, a bonneted Hino truck. Check out our chat with Bill Gillespie, Hino Australia GM of Brand and Franchise Development for details…
