Word of the Week: Inspire! Topic of the week: Quarantine edition communication series: Setting positive boundaries for yourself Video of the week: Boundaries - The R Spot - Season 3 - Episode 9 - by Iyanla Vanzant https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bM8I1_u2lOk A boundary is a demonstration of self respect and respect for others. It’s a structure or expectionation you put in place to define or limit behavior, people or experiences that are not in line with who you are and what you need or want and what you expect. They keep us safe from internal and external intrusion. They keep us aware of how far we can go, how much we can do with others, for others, and makes others aware of what we expect and we will accept. - Boundaries are not walls to keep people away, they are parameters that keep us safe - You can’t control how people treat you, but you can communicate what you will tolerate. If they can’t respect those boundaries then you can’t have them in your life because they don’t respect you. - Think about what you need to feel and how you need to be and what you want from others in order to experience honor and respect. - Announce your boundaries. They must be announced once they’ve been defined. - Remember when you are first starting out you have to be patient and flexible with yourself and with others. Boundaries are more than likely be violated in the beginning even when they are aware and consciously trying to honor your boundaries. When this happens just remind them of the new boundary and what’s acceptable. And honor and acknowledge those who do respect your boundaries. And if there are those who won’t honor these boundaries then you should remove them from your life if possible. Word of the Week: Self-Love! Topic of the Week: Quarantine edition - Communication series Video of the week:10 ways to have a better conversation | Celeste Headlee https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1vskiVDwl4&t=308s Her lecture begins with her making the point that research has shown that we don’t listen to each other. We base our decisions strictly on what we already believe and now more than even less open to different points or compromise. Celeste had 10 ways to have a better conversation. Things we’ve been taught like Looking people in the eye, show you’re paying attention, think of things to say before hand, etc are all crap. 1) Be present. 2) Don’t pontificate. 3) Use open ended questions. 4) Go with the flow. 5) Don’t equate their experience with yours. 6) Conversations are not an NOT opportunity to promote yourself. 7) Don’t repeat yourself or rephrase the same thing over and over. 8) Stay out of the weeds. 9) Listen. 10) Be brief. Word of the Week: Balance! Topic of the Week: Quarantine Edition Inner Self Series: Self Awareness - Own Your Communication Video of the Week: Own Your Behaviours, Master Your Communication, Determine Your Success | Louise Evans | TEDxGenova https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BZuWrdC-9Q Louise Evans work is about researching the questions, What behaviors and attitudes do we bring into the world? On the stage with Louise are 5 chairs. Each a different color and each chair represents a reaction the people have to situations and the idea is to help us slow down how we are behaving and to analyze our behaviors. 1) On the red chair is a picture of a jackal which represents attack 2) The yellow chair is the hedgehog chair. We curl up and protect ourselves from the big bad world by harshly judging ourselves and play the victim. 3) The green chair is the meer cat chair. This is when we are mindful, thoughtful, curious, we take a breath before making a decision. 4) The blue chair, the dolphin chair represents Detect. We become detective of ourselves. 5) The purple chair, the giraffe chair which represents connect. This is where we put our egos on the back-burner and we show empathy, compassion, understanding, we listen to people. The next time you’re presented with a challenge, you are about to snap at your partner, or kids, which chair will you sit in? And if you find yourself in the red chair can you at least acknowledge it, be aware that it wasn’t the right choice and say “i’m sorry”. Because then you can free yourself of that and recognize there’s a better way. Word of the Week: CONNECT! Now that we've all gone through the stages of grief (to a greater or lesser degree), because that is what we are feeling is grief, we can talk about our expectations. We have lost our way of life. It hasn’t just been turned upside down, it’s changed for good. It wont stay this way, but even when the quarantine is lifted we won’t be going back to the way things we did a few weeks ago. So we are dealing with the fact that our old way of living is over. It’s dead. And we must grieve whether we want to or not. These are the stages to grieving: SHOCK & DENIAL PAIN & GUILT ANGER & BARGAINING "DEPRESSION", REFLECTION, LONELINESS THE UPWARD TURN RECONSTRUCTION & WORKING THROUGH ACCEPTANCE & HOPE If you look back at how you’ve reacted to this over that past few weeks you’ll see that you’ve had some if not all the negative emotions. We doubt anyone is at the point where we feel optimistic and hopeful and ready to start accepting and adapting. But of course that’s where we want to be because until then we can’t move forward and get back to living it. And it’s ok. That’s what this show is about this week. Our expectations at this point. Word of the WEEK - Reality! Topic of the Week: Atomic Habits part 2 Systems over goals Video of the week: Success Habits: The Proven Way to Achieve Your Dreams with James Clear and Lewis Howes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRse5I_p7tA In James Clear’s book he says, you do not rise to the level of your goals but fall to the level of your systems. The goal is your desired outcome, the system the collection of daily habits that will get you to your goal. If there’s a gap between your goal and your system, if there’s a gap between your desired outcome and your habits, your habits will win. Your results in life are often a lagging measure of your habits. You savings is a measure of your financial habits, your physical fitness level is a measure of your habits of eating and exercising, etc The system delivers what ever result occurs. We talked about a system here on live it or waste it way back in the beginning when we did the show on the morning routine. That would be a system of good habits that get your day started in the right direction. Goals are good for setting you on the path, giving you a direction, but your system of getting there is what really matters and determines whether you accomplish your goals. SPORTS ANALOGY - In sports, every team starts the offseason with the goal to win the championship. But only one team achieves that goal every year. There are other factors that play into it that aren’t necessarily in your control, like personell, injuries, schedule, etc… but it’s the system the coach implements, from the way they practice, what they eat, how they bond with one another, these are all things a coach does and they do it the same way every season with a tweak here and there once they see that system leads to an opportunity to win the championship. Now there are some coaches that are stubborn and refuse to change their system or adapt it to changes in the way the game is played and they are successful at achieving the goal of a championship. But the important thing to understand with systems is that they aren’t attached to the outcome of the goal, because the system is to put you in the best possible position to take advantage of the opportunities put in front of you. The system is a series of good habits that create a lifestyle in line with your identity. Kobe identified himself as someone who was going to outwork everyone else, so his habits reflected that with the 50 workouts a day. The championships, the records, the achievements were all just symptoms or a reflection of the system in place. This is where what you identify as, is important. Because identifying yourself as something too specific can cause you to have tunnel vision and limit you. For example, Kobe’s identity was someone who worked hard and was disciplined and focused on the task. If he had just identified himself as a just basketball player he, one, may not have pushed himself as hard, and two, when basketball was over his identity would be gone, then what? But identifying himself as someone who outworked everyone else, someone who learns and grows, embraces fear and failure, he could apply that to anything he was doing. James also discusses the importance of environment and habits. Habits are more likely to form if the cue is obvious. It’s easily visible, easily accessible. The groups you spend your time with. positive habits in a negative environment is only sustainable for a short period of time. A great way to build a good habit is to be around, join a group with mutual habits and interests. With bad habits you would do the opposite. if you’re trying to quit smoking you stop having cigarettes in the house. You don’t hang out with people who love to smoke Stop going places where people smoke James says in his book that research shows that people who appear to have better self control really are just tempted...
Word of the week: Transform! Topic of the week: Healthy habit Series - Atomic Habits with James Clear PART I Video of the week: Success Habits: The Proven Way to Achieve Your Dreams with James Clear and Lewis Howes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRse5I_p7tA James Clear is the author of the book, "Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones" and one of the first things James says in this interview and mentions in his book is that habits are the compound interest of self improvement. The effect of your habits multiply over time so the choices you make, even the small choices accrue over time and impact your way of life. So why do we have so many bad habits if we know it’s going to have a negative effect on our way of life? Habits that are immediately satisfying are more likely to be repeated. Like eating a donut. The long term effects are negative, but we really enjoy the immediate gratification of the taste. Also, we won’t see the negative effects right away. The opposite could be said for exercising. It’s not immediately gratifying, it’s usually grueling and painful, you’re tired and sore after and you don’t see results weeks or months down the line. The interviewer then jokingly presented the idea of eating a donut at the gym so you get that immediate gratification before doing something you wouldn’t get immediate gratification from. That made us think about a psych101 class where we learned about conditioning. Classical and operant conditioning, Pavlov's dog gets a treat when they ring the bell and eventually he would salivate at the sound of the bell. Would you associate the feeling of eating a donut with exercising? Would the sound of weights clanging cause us to salivate? This isn’t a good idea and not something we would recommend. And it leads James to go into his concept of identity based habits which I am really fascinated with. He goes into great depth in his book but we’ll cover as much as we can because we think this is a concept we should all at least consider trying. The ultimate form or immediate satisfaction is through the reinforcement of your desired identity. So your habits would match your identity. So If you identify yourself as a writer then you write everyday. If you identify yourself as a healthy person or a gym rat you would go to the gym and workout everyday. Eating a donut wouldn’t fit into that identity so you would probably have a different reaction to seeing one than someone who doesn’t have that identity. So you get that immediate gratification of being that person. You want reinforcements that align principles and values. Once that happens your perception of things will change. If you identify as a Muslim or Jewish you would look at a honey baked ham differently than someone one who identified as a pork lover? Yes, you would. And once you understand your identity and what habits are in tuned with that identity it’s just a matter of reps. A habit is formed through reps. There’s no magical day, it’s a lifestyle not a finish line. And he talks about how it’s kind of a give and take, the habits reinforce the identity and the identity reinforces the habits. Next week in PART II of this podcast, we will get into his concept of having systems in place are more important than having goals. Please share your experiences with achieving healthy habits and what’s worked for you. Join us next week, when we continue our discussion of James Clear’s video. Word of the Week - Stretch! Topic of the Week: We are continuing our healthy habit series with a very important and necessary habit, Vulnerability. This week’s topic is Vulnerability and Shame. How to be vulnerable in a world that lacks empathy... Video of the Week: The power of vulnerability - Brene’ Brown https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4Qm9cGRub0&t=125s Vulnerability is being honest, being seen as imperfect, to put yourself out there. Brown describes Vulnerability as emotional risk, exposure, uncertainty. Most people equate vulnerability with weakness - we explain why that is the opposite of the truth. Often people avoid vulnerability because they see it as a weakness yet when we see someone else being vulnerable we see courage. Vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity and change. To create is to make something that never existed before. Nothing more vulnerable than that. The reason we are afraid to be vulnerable is shame. The feeling of not being good enough. Not worthy of empathy. We take a deep dive on that. What Brown's research showed was that the people who had a strong sense of love and belonging were the one's that felt they were worthy of it. They had the courage to be imperfect. They had the compassion to be kind to themselves first and then to others. They had connection as a result of authenticity. They were willing to let go of who they thought they were supposed to be, and allowed themselves to be who they truly were. They embraced vulnerability. To them it was necessary. Her last quote really sums up why vulnerability is important, “if we let ourselves be seen, deeply seen, to love with our whole hearts, to practice gratitude and joy and to believe we are enough, then we will stop screaming and start listening and we will be kinder and gentler to ourselves and to each other.” Please share your experiences with vulnerability and tell us if it’s something you need to work on in your life, and we want to hear about tips and strategies that have worked for you. Word of the Week - Patience! This is something Dave W. needed to remind himself of. Having struggled with things not happening fast enough he thinks this is a good reminder for all of us, whatever we are doing, if it’s meaningful, if it’s a large priority, it’s going to take time. Probably more time than you anticipate, expect, or hope for. Have reminders of why you’re doing it, what this means to you. Understand you have no choice but to push through no matter how long it takes. Focus on the journey not the outcome or the finish line. Topic of the week! Checking in with the Davids What’s up with us, what are we using in our daily routines, what’s working, what are we struggling with and what do we want to improve upon? Word of the WEEK - Now! It’s been about a week since the tragic death of Kobe Bryant and 8 other beautiful human beings in a helicopter crash. And when something like this happens, if nothing else, it reminds you, all you have is right now. The next moment is not guaranteed to anyone. Not to anyone. Live in the now. What are you going to do with this moment? This gift you have been given. You can’t be focused on the task at hand if your mind isn’t present. Be present. Be alive. Be you! Topic of the week: The Mamba Mentality Video of the week: The Mind of Kobe Bryant - Learning by piotrekz prod https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZeJroG3YsZw&t=22s We had to kind of shuffle some things and change our agenda a bit so we could do this tribute show. This week was supposed to be a check in show to see update our progress but I thought it would be a good idea to save that and talk about a man who really set the gold standard for what we call on this show, living it! It’s so wild that Kobe passed on the day we posted episode 24, his number, and the topic was discipline. Because if you look up discipline and hard work in the dictionary and Kobe’s picture is next to it, in the gym working out. He had what he called the mamba mentality which he simply described as being the best version of yourself. Learning and growing. Getting better every day. It’s a constant, infinite quest to get better. Kobe had a curiosity for everything. He was constantly trying to learn everywhere. Always asking questions. Seeking out people who have mastered their craft and even going as far as cold calling people who are leaders in industries and pick their brain. He understood at a very young age what it took to be great and developed a system of success. He said, if you’re always practicing, always working you can’t help but be better than everyone else. He knew that hard work and preparation was key to success. If you’re prepared, if you’re ready, then it’s just a matter of execution. No reason to fear, to doubt, to worry when you’re prepared. He knew he had done everything he could up until that moment so now he just had to let it be. Think about the confidence you would have, stepping on the court knowing that you’ve worked harder than everyone else out here. You’ve gone above and beyond to prepare for this moment. Winning was the goal. But winning isn’t the journey. It’s the indicator of how well your system works. And when he didn’t win, he would ask himself, ok, what do I need to do different next time? We must I improve? There is no end to this. Even when you win, there’s the next season. It’s the journey, the action taken, the system in place. He wasn’t afraid to fail. He wanted the ball with the game on the line because he wasn’t attached to the outcome. Winning is the goal but learning and executing what you learn, putting in the work to be the best is what it’s really about. He knew he had prepared for this moment so why wouldn’t he want the ball? He learned from his mistakes, his losses, his disappointments. He assessed his abilities and worked on his weaknesses until they became a strength. He accepted challenges and embraced fear. When they said he was just a scorer and didn’t play hard on defense, the next year he made all defensive team. He identified himself as a basketball player. He identified as being the best. He identified as a man who was not going to be out worked. And because of this, working out 50 hours a day just seemed logical. It’s what someone who wants to be the best ever does. How does it differ from motivation? Author Samuel Thomas Davies defines it by saying, Self discipline is about leaning into resistance. Taking action in spite of how you feel. Living a life by design, not by default. Self care is something we briefly covered in previous podcasts but we think it’s a subject we should revisit and dedicate an episode to. You are the most important asset to invest in! If we don’t take care of ourselves, mentally, physically, emotionally then all these goals we set, all the tools we acquire and all the time we’ve spent working on ourselves won’t mean anything. All the people who depend on you or need your help won’t get that if you’re not well. And your mood will suffer. WORD OF THE WEEK: Awaken! This episode is going to cover a few things we’ve already discussed but we think it’s good to have a refresher to start off the new year. If you already have goals set, you’re already on the path, then perhaps you don’t need to start new goals but just go back and really reassess the way you’re going about achieving them. VIDEO OF THR WEEK: How to Set Goals for the New Year (+actually ACHIEVE them) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiM97bP8500 - envision your goals - every aspect of your life. Health, family, career, friends, finances, living situation, personal growth, adventure and whatever matters to you. - Be specific about each one. You don’t want to just focus on one goal because then the other goals will drop off. - Make sure that’s it’s realistic. - She talks about prioritizing and planning your goals. Listen to our podcasts on planning to get a good idea on how to organize and plan your goals. - Take action! Get started, get moving, get momentum. - Be disciplined and consistent. - Track your progress. This is where your planner comes in. If not just write out the tasks and cross them off. Word of the WEEK - Reflect Topic of the week - What have we learned so far? David and Dave’s top 5 tools learned in the past 20 shows. Top five lessons from Dave Wein Therapy works/becoming self aware Cookie Jar Discipline/consistency (slow and steady) Diet and exercise Taking breaks/planning fun David Guggenheim's LIST: Morning routine Self-care before caring for others Planning your day Be comfortable being uncomfortable Afferisms
Word of the WEEK - Meditate Topic of the week - the last of our toxic habit series. Self Sabotage. This week’s video: Self Sabotage: How to Stop Sabotaging Yourself with Lavendaire https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJnikrOgWRM What is self-sabotage? It is when you hurt yourself or hold yourself back from reaching your full potential or reaching the next level of happiness or success that we desire in life. Self sabotage is something we might not be aware of, or it could be something we are aware of but we still do it because the pull is too strong. Schmitty comes with some really good arguments and convinces you to veer off the path to success. Why do we sabotage ourselves? The foundation of why is the idea of comfort. Humans love comfort. We like to stay in this safe zone that we know, that isn’t unpredictable, it’s cozy and it helps us when we feel anxious, angry, overwhelmed, etc.. So you go back to those old bad habits because they comfort you. But this doesn’t allow you to break through to the next level of happiness and success. In our lives we are happiness we are comfortable with and if when we reach a higher level of happiness we become uncomfortable and we sabotage ourselves to go back to the level of happiness we are comfortable. Please share your experiences with self sabotage, did any of these patterns resonate with you or do you have people in your life that constantly sabotage their lives, what are some ways you dealt with it that helped or if you tried any of the tips we shared today. WORD OF THE WEEK: Courtesy Could we not due with a little more courtesy, online and off. It doesn’t take much effort to acknowledge other people. Some out there are almost invisible to many people, whether they are seniors, disabled, homeless or a variety of other people. TOPIC OF THE WEEK: We’re talking about food addiction this week. This is not about shaming people. This is about getting the information out the food industry doesn’t want you to know. We’re asking for open minds people and we expect courtesy from ourselves and others. Food manufacturers do not have your best interests in mind – they just want your money. The effect of some foods created now days is as harmful as illegal drugs or alcohol. And unlike cigarettes, and vaping the government is fine allowing corporations targeting kids with their addictive sugar content. VIDEO OF THE WEEK: Food Addiction – Dr. Mark Hyman https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=daXkP3bydoQ Sugar’s addictive properties have been compared to cocaine and heroin. These foods are so hard to give up even if they make us feel horrible afterwards. Food addiction works on our dopamine receptors, forcing our brains to seek out more crap. This food cycle of addiction is not on accident. The food companies have an army of chemists working in their employ, designing food to make us obese, and make our organs work harder to process the horrible food we’re all eating. We can’t be healthy when our organs are being overworked. Whole foods are a solution because the cards are stacked against us. We grow up eating this stuff. We see advertising normalizing this type of food. And our peers are enmeshed in this cycle as we see young deaths, and diseases that used to be associated only with old people. We’re dying of what we’re eating here. The first thing we suggest people do is become self-aware of what you are eating. Then we ask folks to think about the WHY you are eating what you are eating. Is it about getting nutrition into our bodies?
Word of the Week: JOY! What a great time to reflect on the year, to enjoy the joy, and be grateful for everything we have. This week’s topic: Toxic Habit Series. We’ll be talking about toxic habits that are holding us back from living it. We’ve all played the pity-party for ourselves but some out there make it a vocation. While we’ve gotten a lot of great feedback on the show we have encountered some folks who are resistant to getting help and making changes that will improve their lives. Dave W. looked into the condition and this is what we found. Habits we part 1 - Professional Victim. What does it mean to be a Professional Victim? How do you recognize this, if this is you? • Do you have a victim mentality when it comes to creating the life you want? • Do you sabotage yourself with victim thinking? • The victim thinking is usually Schmitty’s last resort to breaking through • We are going to discuss what the victim mentality and as signs that you are suffering from it. • The victim mentality and referred to in the Video - Victim Mentality the greatest illusion known to mankind by Doron Geber https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0d2idc_kW6Y&t=446s • Is when it comes to cause and effect, life is on the cause end and you and your experiences are on the effect end. • That life throws things at you. Some good, some bad. • From this you see the world distorted. • The truth is, everyone has a vibration and that vibration is then responded to by the universe with an experience. • LIFE IS ON THE CAUSE END, THE EXPERIENCE IS ON THE EFFECT END • There are things that happen out of our control that we perceive as negative but the experience that comes from that is caused by us. • The DMV story David gave back in episode 13 is a perfect example of that. He could have played the victim and blamed the DMV for being stupid, blamed the car dealer for not doing their job, etc. and created a very negative bubble around himself that he could easily justify, but that would have made the experience awful all the way round.
Today’s topic: How to combat burnout! How to avoid it, how to deal with it when it’s happening and what to do stop it or prevent it. Burnout is more than just being stressed or overwhelmed. Burnout is a serious issue that can lead to things like depression and even suicide if gone unaddressed. One of the main issues that allows for burnout to happen is the fact that people don’t talk about burnout. If it’s you or someone you care about is dealing with the issue its important to seek professional help. Recognize the symptoms and take-action. Video of the week: Dr. Dike Drummond - Physician Burnout Symptoms and Gender Differences https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2dtMJpMp2o&t=19s The warning signs: A) Exhaustion, in a downward spiral, B) Cynicism, sarcasm, compassion fatigue, C) Lack of efficacy. Feeling like you’re not making a difference. The work you’re doing is getting you nowhere. Dave W. went through a lot of these symptoms when going through his divorce. He wasn’t able to give to anyone else because he was so drained. Dave reached out for professional help which helped him turn things around. While its easy to say “get help” it may be difficult for people living with burnout to get help – so maybe you can reach out and help them. BONUS VIDEO 1: How to avoid burnout! Let’s be proactive! Video: Brenden Burchard - How to avoid burnout https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qKLdVTC8JE&t=218s a. Get more sleep. It’s not a priority and it needs to be. b. He says to get 7 to 8 hours a night consistently. It’s been scientifically proven that when you don’t get enough sleep your cognition, mood, energy all suffer. You basically become an a-hole c. Say no first. We tend to over commit ourselves saying yes to things without thinking about it first. d. Look at it like a business decision. Be convinced that this is something you should take on. e. schedule time to do email and texting. Block the time that you deal with texting and emailing instead of being frazzled by your phone all day long. No one needs to hear from you every 5 seconds. Set those boundaries with people so they know you don’t have time to email and text all day. Checking that constantly throughout the day means you’re checking out of whatever task you’re working on. f. And the last thing he suggests is ask for help. We talked about this before and you and I both struggle with this. BONUS VIDEO 2: Work Life Balance for Physicians - 4 Secrets to Saying no https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRq1oLNnZNo
Word of the WEEK – Listening We're preparing for the Holidays people. Whether it be for Thanksgiving, Christmas buffets, or New Years binge eating, we gotta prepare BEFORE we get into the situations we know we're going to get into. Go in with the attitude that this isn’t a time to just let yourself go. This isn’t a time to rebel against your new habits. You can enjoy the holidays without being a glutinous fool. We like to use this time of year as an excuse to treat our bodies like crap, feeding it crap, not exercising, getting stressed over gifts and all the other craziness that comes with the holiday season. Don’t tell yourself you’re just going to start back up on January 1st, that’s BS and you know it. Plan, plan, plan! Plan for as much as you can. Write it all down. Don’t just plan it in your head. Have it all written down in an organized way so you can refer to it quickly.
We've taken you on a journey of planning out into the future, your week, and now we get into how to effectively plan out your day. David G get's a little Schmitty-ish when resisting the daily planner but we learn concrete steps how to take on your day with a plan.
Word of the Week: Forgiveness Forgiveness actually relives the soul of pent-up pressure. It’s not about the person who wronged you – it’s about you, and your healthy mind, body and soul. It’s about healing and achieving our own potential, people! Last week we discussed the brain dump and the life assessment and we were promised by David G. that he would implement these strategies into his life and report back how it changed (or didn’t change) his life and if it’s something that is worth doing. We’re happy to report he actually did what he said he was going to do and so far, it’s been a resounding success. David G’s brain dump was then graded on a 10-point scale (10 being best). What a stress relieving activity to simply write all this stuff down. Dare we say liberating? But you have to start working on that list and getting things done. 07:24 – The next step is… prioritize the list of ‘brain dumped’ items, and then plan your next step VIDEO REFERENCED: Prioritize Like a Genius https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDAYUN92i70&feature=youtu.be 09:08 – Stop prioritizing easy. Start with the hard stuff at the beginning of the day. We talked about quick wins, but don’t make your whole morning or day just doing easy tasks. One quick win to get your blood flowing then do something you’ve put off or gives you anxiety. Get it done first and feel that sense of accomplishment, the weight lifted and feel like you can do anything. 13:58 – Pick three things you need to do that would really move you forward, get you closer to that goal, weighing heavily on your mind. And remember you don’t have to finish the hard tasks today. Just do an hour into a hard project to make progress. Don’t be intimidated by finishing a task – just make progress on it. 18:39 – Stop prioritizing false emergencies. Stop replying to texts or phone calls that don’t need immediate attention. Say no to requests from people. Don’t just commit to something without giving it serious thought. Do you really have time for this? It might be difficult but the best thing you can do for people is live your best self. Except for your family, other people’s problems aren’t your problems. 18:51 – Prioritize freedom. Include down time in your day. Make it a priority to take time out to quiet your mind, step away from whatever you are working on. Take a walk, meditate 19:05 – David G. has an amazing story about the DMV where he embodied what we learned from the “Avoid Meltdowns” Show. Check this bad boy out!
We need to be open to new ideas, new ways of thinking because that’s the way we learn, grow and evolve. And this week we're adding planning into the mix. Word of the Week: Open Minded We’ve built a strong foundation but this is the week we start to build on those foundations. Dave W. has been struggling but as we say, we don’t fail, we learn and boy has he been learning. But now that he has assessed his activities over the past few weeks he is able to even more fully embrace the importance of the morning routine as the bedrock to living it effectively. 05:01 – Don’t underestimate the power of music as a part of the morning routine as a method of energizing us and keeping us on that routine. 05:48 – The cold showers were not doing it for Dave W. as a way to energize him in the morning (although he wasn’t aware of the different ways of approaching the cold shower). 08:32 – Dave W. will post both his music playlist and his updated morning routine on the Facebook page for those who are interested in emulating his process 09:41 – This week we’re getting into the nitty-gritty of how to zero in on changing our lives. The next step is planning, organizing our priorities, assessing our behaviors and creating our goals and doing it with consistency, precision and discipline – that’s what makes successful people. 11:17 – We’re focusing on a couple videos this week. Details and links below… Burchard - Power of Monthly Goals (How to Schedule Your Year) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CH-QcxDsrhM&feature=youtu.be Mel Robbins: How to Plan Your Week (Mel Robbins 2017) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaY7ifBgjyc&feature=youtu.be 14:09 – David G. gives a ton of excuses why he doesn’t want to plan out his day – all of which makes him think he should begin planning his days as Dave W. is suggesting. 16:37 – What you’re struggling with indicates what you need to change. And creating habits around those rough areas is key to creating new outcomes. 19:21 – If you plan ahead, then you don’t need to think about what you need to do next because you’ve already done that mental work. This allows you to stick to the plan and prevent little Schmiddy 23:07 – We discuss how far in advance we should be planning our activities 25:35 – With long-term planning under our belt we now turn to planning our week. Mel Robbins suggests having a family meeting on Sundays or Monday mornings and going through the week – to make sure everybody is on the same page. 28:33 – We should also be doing a ‘brain dump’ to clear our mind and help us prioritize the important things for us to be spending our time on. 30:29 – Doing all this planning in the morning can seem like a ‘waste of time’ for those who want to jump into it and get things done. That’s wrongheaded thinking though, planning keeps us on track with doing the important things and not just the easy, unimportant things we often get mired in. In Part II of our meltdown Help! Let’s ask for help, let’s help other folks out. Don’t be afraid of the power of “HELP” For those seeking self-help techniques this is the show for you. Word of the Week: Simplify Simplifying how we do things makes our life easier – so why are we doing it. Let’s get it together people. This harkens back to our self-awareness word – if you are self-aware you’ll be able to identify areas in your life crying out for simplification. 05:17 – Just because you do things one way, doesn’t mean that has to define you or control how you approach life in the future. One way to do this is to take some time out to make a plan. You’ll save hours and perhaps days of frustration. 06:57 – When you are transitioning from one project to the next – take some time in-between to reset and re-focus on the new task at hand. 08:02 – Find your stress relievers. Whether it be exercise or whatever it is. Dave W. highly recommends getting a Foam Roller as a quick way to relax, get the blood circulating, and it takes your mind off the burdens of the day. Take even a couple moments a day to take a deep breath and maybe a quick stretch. 12:32 – It is way too easy to slip into your old habits. It happens so covertly it happens without us even being aware of it. 14:46 – Not only should you be planning ahead, you should plan for the unforeseen to knock you off your game. So, plan for it! If it takes you 5 days to finish a project, tell your client it’ll take you 6. 15:27 – Before saying yes, think about how it will impact your plan. Saying “no” is okay and in some ways the best thing for you. 17:07 – Don’t focus on temporary fixes when long-term solutions are what’s needed. You need a long-term plan to avoid meltdowns. Remember Presentation Guy! Don’t be him. Instead of allowing ourselves to be overwhelmed, plan for these adversities even if you don’t know what they are. Instead of bashing our computer on the floor, pause, focus on a solution in the moment when something doesn’t go the way we want it to. Be self-aware of your emotions. When you’re in a bad place, you need to recognize it and be proactive about changing that feeling. You can’t get anything done in that state. Before you deal with any problem you have to be in the right frame of mind. 16:39 – Beware technology, especially first thing in the morning 18:29 – Write everything down that’s bothering you/needs to be done. Empty your brain, get it out of your head and onto paper. From that list, figure out which need to be done now, done by someone else or not done at all and are just there. 22:42 - Planning ahead and sticking to that plan. Use a daily planner. When planning your time for a project, factor in problems and fatigue. Figure in extra time for the bull-crap. Have an efficient way of dealing with deadlines. (This is something we will go into detail next episode) Stick with your routine. Don’t allow your feeling of being overwhelmed take you off your game. Old habits creep in when you feel overwhelmed. So, what does “Living It” actually mean? It isn’t some cookie cutter ideology, or a one size fits all routine. It’s an individual mindset allowing us to see what’s going on in our lives that isn’t what we want, and a systematic approach to understanding that and changing those circumstances. That doesn’t happen overnight, and it isn’t something we solve in one episode. Instead we take several episodes like this one to understand what is amiss and use that knowledge to grow. In this episode David G. takes a deep dive into the roadblocks he is encountering in his life and Dave Wein dishes out some excellent advice on how to combat those troubles. Spoiler alert – it involves a cookie jar.
