Fitness Career Mastery Podcast: Group Fitness | Personal Training | Studio & Gym Business
Episode Description & Show Notes: This week, a fitness influencer went viral for saying people over 200 pounds shouldn't be allowed in Pilates class—and that instructors with a “gut” shouldn't be teaching. Nearly 40% of our daily actions are driven by unconscious habits, many of which can be negative and detrimental to our health and well-being. These ingrained behaviors, such as stress-eating unhealthy snacks, operate without our conscious awareness, making it challenging to identify and break these cycles. In this episode of the SuperLife podcast, I dive into the power of habits and how they shape our lives. I discuss how to successfully change habits and the significant impact that social accountability and environment design have on habit formation. I also discuss the importance of a supportive community and much more! Don't forget… You can order now by heading to https://darinolien.com/fatal-conveniences-book or order now on Amazon. Dr. Eric Recker is a dentist, husband, father, keynote speaker, Elite Success Coach, author, pilot, mountain climber and recovering triathlete. In his second half of life, he is committed to helping people shorten the distance to becoming their best version and learning to #WINtheNOW. Questions · We'd love for you to share in your own words a little bit about how you got from where you were to where you are today. · Could you share maybe two or three overarching themes that you believe have been the core values that have driven you to get to where you are today, and if other people were to embrace or embody those same core values, you believe they would achieve the same success. · What would you say are some of the success tools that have made both businesses thrive in a positive way, if you were to look at them and see if there are any overlapping behaviors or competencies that help to strengthen the customer experience in both areas. · Could you also share with us what's the one online resource, tool, website or application that you absolutely can't live without in your business? · Now, could you also share with our listeners, Eric, maybe one or two books that have had a great impact on you. It could be a book that you read a very long time ago, or even one that you've read recently, but it has impacted you, both professionally and even personally. · Can you also share with us what's the one thing that's going on in your life right now that you are really excited about, either something you're working on to develop yourself or your people. · Where can listeners find you online? · Now, before we wrap our episodes up, we always like to ask our guests, do you have a quote or a saying that during times of adversity or challenge, you'll tend to revert to this quote if for any reason you get derailed or you get off course, the quote kind of helps to get you back on track. Do you have one of those? Highlights Eric's Journey Me: Eric, we always like to give our guests an opportunity to share in their own words a little bit about their own journey. So, your bio basically gave us a very short summary of all the wonderful things that you have and are still doing, but we'd love for you to share in your own words a little bit about how you got from where you were to where you are today. Eric shared that he really could give a short version of that, and it would take about 4 hours, but he'll try to really crunch it down together and say that he was bullied on the playground when he was growing up. He grew up in a small town in Iowa in the early 80s, and recess kickball was life, and he was told that he couldn't play because he wasn't good enough, and so unfortunately, that you are not good enough became a soundtrack for him, and he told himself on the sideline of that recess kickball field that he was going to be so good at everything he ever did that no one would ever not pick him. Well, fast forward into his professional career as a dentist, he truly believed that he wasn't good enough, so he overshot on everything, overcompensated on everything, always kept adding more and more and more because he was trying to prove to other people that he was good enough. That led to three significant rounds of burnout, including chest pain, heart palpitations, panic attacks, all of that to the point that he got very close to selling his dental practice and walking away. When that all fell through, he needed to step back and decide what he really wanted to do with this life, and he knew that he had a powerful story. He'd been through a lot, and he wanted to be able to help other people on their journey. So, what he does now is he has sold half of his dental practice to a partner. He sees patients three days a week, and the other days he speak and coach and write books and do content and all of those kinds of things, trying to help other people on their journey, so that they don't have to go as far down the burnout trail as he went. Me: That is awesome. What a wonderful story. Core Values for Success - Themes that Drive Achievement and Fulfillment Me: So, Eric, you speak a lot about burnout and mindset and just handling the different stresses of life, can you share with our listeners on your own personal journey, when you got to that point, when you realized that you needed to make a change? If you could share maybe two or three overarching themes that you believe have been the core values that have driven you to get to where you are today, and if other people were to embrace or embody those same core values, you believe they would achieve the same success. Eric shared that first of all, where it all went wrong each time that he went through that terrible season of burnout, he noticed the same equation now that he looks back on it, kind of doing a forensic examination of it was over committed. He had too much on his plate, as a lot of us do, but even more importantly, he wasn't taking care of himself, he just kept going. He just kept adding more and more, and that's where the problem was. So, one of the big core values that he has is taking care of himself. So, we have to be a little bit selfish so that we can be selfless. If we don't have anything to give, we won't be able to give anything to our people. We won't be able to have an impact on those that we are around, and we will definitely get burned out. Another huge core value for him is relationships. He's a highly relational person, and it's extremely important to him that he has some good quality relationships in his life, and it's important for all of us. So, he has a mentor that he meets with, he has a coach that he works with, and he has 4 people that he would consider, 2:00 am friends, people that he could call in the middle of the night if his world fell apart. So, relationships and self-care would be two of the big things that he thinks we really need to be careful and make sure we embrace those. Me: Absolutely love those two themes that you've shared with us. Success Tools for Thriving Businesses - Overlapping Behaviors and Competencies that Enhance Customer Experience Me: Now, I love the fact that one of your themes was relationships, and a big part of customer experience, as this podcast is focused on navigating the customer experience is building strong relationships. All organizations aim to have customers for life, and a big part of that is building strong relationships with those customers, whether it be a B2B or a B2C. Since you pretty much managing two businesses, because you mentioned that you coach and you write books and you do speeches and stuff for organizations and people, and then you also have your practice where you're in office three days per week. What would you say are some of the success tools that have made both businesses thrive in a positive way, if you were to look at them and see if there are any overlapping behaviours or competencies that help to strengthen the customer experience in both areas. Eric shared that one thing that he teaches his team is to be aware of the rest of the story, it's a huge thing for him. People are complicated, so, in his dental practice, people will come in and they'll maybe see them for an hour of their life, and they might be grumpy when they come in, they might be scared, they might be, however they present themselves to them is just a snapshot of how their life is going. They may not be taking very good care of themselves, they may be in a bad place, they may have gotten a diagnosis, they may have a family member that's really struggling, they may have any number of things that's going on. They may be crazy burned out, and they get to see a little snapshot of them. So, when somebody comes in, they don't seem like themselves, or if they've just met them, and they're kind of off putting to them at the beginning, just understand that they're seeing a snapshot of a bigger picture of someone's life. And so, he thinks it's always important that they think about that, they don't always get the chance to know the whole person, but especially in someone that you've been in relationship with for a while, if they seem off, then there's something more going on, and it might be worth exploring that. Me: So, you're lying in the dentist chair, right? And what would you call the person that's serving the client, a dental assistant? And the dental assistant picks up that the patient is agitated, walk us through that. What would you want he or she to do to kind of have the patient relax, maybe build some conversation. Do you just have casual talk? Do you pick a topic, maybe about the weather? Do you think about something that's maybe current affairs, like Donald Trump? Eric shared that he definitely stays away from politics. Stay away from politics and hot button news things, that's for sure. People get pretty fired up about that. But exactly that scenario that you had. The great thing about his practice is a lot of the patients that he sees, he's been seeing for 20 years. And so, when they come in, if something doesn't seem right, then they'll ask them, “Hey, is everything going okay today?” “Well, I'm just really nervous about this procedure.” “Okay, well, tell me more about that.” And a lot of times, really all someone needs to do is voice what they're feeling or talk about the procedure before they do it, and then it becomes a lot easier. And if it doesn't, if they're still amped up, they say things like, “Hey, the good news is this is all the longer this procedure is going to be. So, in half the time it takes to watch a movie, you're going to be on your way.” So, they try to break it into more manageable chunks if people are apprehensive, and sometimes they have to take a little break and just let everybody sit up and breathe. And then they get back into it. But they really try to meet the patient right where they are and help them work through the situation, because it doesn't do any good if they're escalated, and Eric's team is escalated, then they're going to have a hard time getting through the procedure. App, Website or Tool that Eric Absolutely Can't Live Without in His Business When asked about on online resource that he can't live without in his business, Eric shared that for him, he would just say that it's his own personal website, it's hugely important whenever he gets asked, “So, hey, where do we find you? How can we get in touch with you. How can we learn more about you?” He's very proud of his website, he had a great web designer, but through there, everything flows to his social media, to his blog, to his books, to the different opportunities that he has, some free online resources. It's something that he's very thankful that he spent some money on, because it's the way that a lot of people end up finding him. Me: Perfect. And we will ask you the question for where our listeners can find you online, which I'm sure your website will be one of those resources later on in the episode. Books that Have Had the Biggest Impact on Eric When asked about books that have had a great impact, Eric shared that two of them definitely come to mind. One is going to be, and a lot of people have probably heard of this one is Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones by James Clear, just an incredible resource. We are the product of our habits and our routines. It is worth taking time to get good habits and routines in our lives, because everything else flows from those patterns that are in our life. So, that's a huge one. Another one that many people probably have not heard of as much is called In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day: How to Survive and Thrive When Opportunity Roars and that's by one of his favorite authors, Mark Batterson, and it describes what we do when adversity hits in our lives, because it's not a question of if, it's a question of when things are going to happen to us, and how do we react to those things. What Eric is Really Excited About Now! When asked about something that he's excited about, Eric stated that he mentioned the whole not good enough, and the paradigm that that presented him with. So, he used to do a lot of triathlons, mountain climbing, stuff like that, he went all the way through the Iron Man distance. He's climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, all of that was pretty much done on a faulty operating system that he had in his mind that he wasn't good enough and he needed to prove himself to people. So, it's really been about 7 years since he's done any kind of an endurance race or anything like that. He's climbed some smaller mountains and done some stuff like that. But there's an event that he's going to be doing the second week of August, and it's going to be at Snow Basin Resort in Utah, and it's called 29029, which is the vertical height of Mount Everest above sea level. So, the goal is, in 36 hours, he has to hike 29,000 vertical feet. Me: Wow. Eric shared that that's usually the first word that people say. So, what he will do is, he'll hike up this mountain, and each time he goes up, he will gain 2300 feet. So, he will hike the same mountain 13 times. So, hike up the mountain, and he will ride the gondola back down. And there's going to be 250 to 300 of them he believes that will be there doing this. And his goal for this is to one, he wanted to train for an event again, he really wanted to be focused and intentional about how he trained for it. But the other thing that he wants to do is he wants to learn about mindset while he's doing it. He wants to learn what happens in his mind when he does a repetitive task for 36 hours. He wants to learn where does his mind goes on hikes number 7, 8 and 9, when he can't see the beginning of the hike and he can't see the end, and he's really in the grind, because he thinks a lot of this will translate into our lives and what we have going on personally. So, he hopes this will be something that he'll be able to give some talks and workshops about in the future. And so, just want to see at 47 years old, just want to see what his body's got in it, what his abilities are. Me: That's amazing, Eric, wow. I'm going to have to follow you. Are you going to be posting this on your social media? Eric confirmed, absolutely. Me: This is fantastic. I would definitely follow you from a personal capacity, just to see, as you mentioned, how do you endure? What are your thoughts? Is it that you feel overcome? Does it impact you emotionally? Like there's so many questions running through my mind right now just listening to you. Eric stated that he's excited. There's one time he knows as he's hiking up that for that whole, he expects it to take about an hour and 15 minutes, probably to hike each time, and at least one of those times he's just going to be completely quiet and he's just going to observe the world around me. His son has made him a couple playlists, so he'll listen to some music that he selected for him. One of the times, he's just going to pray for his family the entire time that he hikes up. So, he has a few of those things. And then, other than that, just going to see what happens. So, he's super excited about it. Me: And I guess it's a time also for you to kind of be one with nature and God, because you don't have much distraction, and hopefully you have no injuries, I pray in the name of Jesus that you come out of this injury free. So, you could really meditate, talk to God, as you mentioned, pray for your family and that's something that we don't get to do every day, have moments of silence, because we're just always so busy doing busy work. Eric agreed that Yanique is so correct. He thinks if people really want their life to change, start with 5 minutes of silence each day, “Well, Eric, why only 5 minutes?” because it's not easy and we're not used to it. Start with 5 minutes of silence and breathing each day and see what that does for you, it's so important, you know this. Where can listeners find Eric online? Website – www.ericrecker.com Quote or Saying that During Times of Adversity Eric Uses When asked about a quote or saying that he tends to revert to, Eric shared that his quote is a Bible verse, and it is Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will keep your path straight.” God has been the constant for his journey all the way through, He's been there in the good times and bad times, in the other times, and he's trying his best to trust that He always knows what the next step is. Me: I love that. Absolutely love that. Thank you so much for sharing. Eric. Well, Eric, you have definitely practiced what you preach in this entire interaction that I've had with you. Thank you so very much for being a guest on our podcast, I believe that our listeners would have gained, when the episode is released, will gain a great amount of knowledge, expertise, advice, motivation. I got that from our conversation, and I can tell that you're not just speaking because it's something to do, but it's coming from your heart, and that touches people way more. I mean, people can tell if you're being authentic and genuine, if it's really coming from a place of authenticity, and I feel that in the conversation that I had with you today. So, I just want to express my deepest gratitude to you. Wish you all the best on your hike, I'm going to be there following and cheering you on and just want to say thank you again. The Power of Proximity in Habits & Success. Inspired by a favorite read, "Atomic Habits" by James Clear, we discuss the impact of our social environment on our habits and success: the close, the many, and the powerful. Clear discusses how we tend to mirror the habits of those around us, particularly the "close" individuals in our lives—the friends, family, and peers we interact with regularly. Studies even show that our habits are significantly influenced by the habits of our closest connections, regardless of physical distance. The phenomenon of rising or falling to the level of those around us is profound. We cover two fascinating studies - astronauts emerging from a single MIT class and the statistical likelihood you will follow the physical weight and body type of those closest to you. Our surroundings deeply impact our behaviors and identities. As a Second-In-Command, it's crucial to curate your social environment intentionally. Seek out groups and communities that challenge you to grow both personally and professionally. Surround yourself with individuals who inspire you to be your best self. You'll hear all about: 00:23: The core message of "Atomic Habits" by James Clear, emphasizing the role of social circles in habit imitation. 01:06: Explore how proximity influences behavior and habits. 01:45: Two incredible studies on the ripple effect of habits within close-knit social circles. 02:25: Jim Rohn's famous quote and the profound effect of surrounding yourself with high-performing peers. 04:16: The importance of intentional community-building and finding sources of positive influence outside of the office. As I'm recording this episode, the holiday season is in full swing and I'm planning my 2024 vision, goals, and still noodling on my word for the year. If I'm being honest, I have a mixed relationship with New Year's Resolutions and believe that you can start a new habit any day of the year. This is what this episode is all about - The Art of Creating Habits, whether it's to gear up for the new year or at any other day of your life. This is the first of a three episode series that I'll be doing on habits. I'm incredibly passionate about this topic and am going to share my tips over the next couple of episodes on how to build consistent habits, starting with using my most recent (crazy!) habit, going for daily dips in the ocean, as an example. We're going to cover how to transform your habits into deeply satisfying expressions of your identity, how to become consistent with them, and why building healthy habits is especially important if you're an empath. We're also going to talk about staying present and choosing habits that actually matter. I believe that committing to a new habit can open the door to an entirely new way of life for you, and can't wait to share what I've learned over the last decade of habit setting! Topics: New Year's Resolutions and why they may or may not work when trying to build a new habit Catherine's most recent habit, going for daily swims in the ocean, and how it has impacted her life Mindset practices that help Catherine maintain habits for months, years or even indefinitely How to cultivate mindset strength to stay consistent with habits Why habit building is particularly important for empaths and how they allow you to take better care of yourself and others The idea that habits can be an expression of who you are and your identity How to choose habits that make you feel satisfied and fulfilled Episode Resources: Gay Hendricks, “The Big Leap: Conquer Your Hidden Fear and Take Life to the Next Level” James Clear, “Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones” 6-Month Course on Mastering Presence Eve Rodsky, “Find Your Unicorn Space: Reclaim Your Creative Life in a Too-Busy World” Connect with Catherine: Website LinkedIn Instagram YouTube Sign up to receive my weekly digest on empathic entrepreneurship and hear from voices committed to spreading this message, sent straight to your inbox every Friday since 2016, here. How can we develop habits that would contribute to our optimal outcome? Are you taking the necessary steps to progress rather than regress? It has been stated that good habits are the key to success, whereas bad habits unlock the door to failure. Consequently, we build our character from the bricks of habit which we pile up day by day. Every person possesses habits that could either make or break them in the long run. Hence, it cannot be very comforting to realize that our habits impact our goals and plans. Some of our habits are designed to hinder us from being the person we aim to be. According to studies, our genes can make us more likely to be excellent at certain things, however, we are still a product of our environment. Therefore, we are prone to imitate the behavior of the people with whom we choose to associate. Consequently, we must strive to surround ourselves with peers that would contribute to our growth and success. Furthermore, we must also consider breaking habits that no longer benefit us. Although it is tough to build healthy habits to replace unhealthy ones, we must continue with perseverance since the reward is priceless. Remember that the practices we put in place today will determine our future outcomes. In this solo episode, Dr. Derrick Burgess will share the conclusions we can derive from a book entitled "Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones. This game-changing book from James Clear is the most thorough approach to changing your behaviors and getting one percent better every day. Tune in today as we discover the book about the fundamentals of habit development and be able to accomplish more by tracking our habits and sticking with excellent routines. "It's the habits that you put in place today that will determine the results later." – Dr. Derrick Burgess Topics Covered: (00:00:00) Introduction + Episode Snippet (00:01:50) Connect with Dr. Derrick Burgess for more content and updates. But there's a certain amount of work that you have to get in since the most powerful outcomes are usually delayed." – Dr. Derrick Burgess "Goals are the results you want to achieve, while systems are the processes that lead to results. But if you ignored your goals and focused on the systems, would you still achieve the goals?" – Dr. Derrick Burgess "Goals help set the direction, but systems help make progress." – Dr. Derrick Burgess "You don't rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems." – Dr. Derrick Burgess "Behaviors treated with good consequences are more likely to be repeated. And habits are mental shortcuts learned through experience." – Dr. Derrick Burgess "You should join a culture where your desired behavior is the normal behavior." – Dr. Derrick Burgess "Many would rather be wrong with the crowd than right by themselves." – Dr. Derrick Burgess "Sometimes you have to let go of that old identity to be able to embrace a new identity." – Dr. Derrick Burgess "We have to continue to review our habits so that we do not become complacent or stagnant, but still be open to change." – Dr. Derrick Burgess Connect with Dr. Derrick Burgess: Website: https://www.drderrickthesportsdr.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drderrickthesportsdr/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TimeOut.SportsDr LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/derrick-burgess-72047b246/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHGDu1zT4K_X6PnYELu8weg Email: thesportsdoctr@gmail.com This episode of TimeOut with the SportsDr. is produced by Podcast VAs Philippines - the team that helps podcasters effectively launch and manage their podcasts, so we don't have to. Declan Ivory Intercom's Vice President of Customer Support is an experienced senior leader with a passion for building and developing high-performing teams and applying digital technologies to support organizations through major business transformation. Prior to sharing his operational expertise and strong leadership to support the growth of Intercom's customer support team, over the last 10 years, Declan has held senior support leadership roles with Amazon Web Services, Tableau Software and Google Cloud. Questions • We always like to give our guests an opportunity to just share a little bit about themselves in their own words, how did you get to where you are today? • So, for those of our listeners that don't know what Intercom is, could you tell them what your company does? • So, AI, it's covers quite a bit of things. Could you tell our listeners maybe, I would say, two or three top areas that you think organisations need to focus on as it relates to AI? And maybe what are some of the skill sets? • Could you also share with us what's the one online resource, tool, website or app that you absolutely can't live without in your business? • Could you also share with our listeners, maybe one or two books that have had the biggest impact on you, it could be a book that you read a very a long time ago or even one that you read recently. • Could you also share with our listeners what's the one thing that's going on in your life right now that you're really excited about? Either something you're working on to develop yourself or your people. • Where can listeners find you online? • Now, before we wrap our episodes up, we always like to ask our guests, do you have a quote or a saying that during times of adversity or challenge, you'll tend to revert to this quote, it kind of helps to get you back on track if for any reason you got derailed. Highlights Declan's Journey Delcan shared that that's a good question. So, he originally studied engineering and graduated as an electronic engineer and went straight into the kind of technology industry. And he's stayed in the tech industry for the last 35 years. But one thing he kind of realized very quickly, one component engineering background that gave him a strong problem-solving skill, and two any business only lives for customers. So, he's always been obsessed by doing things for customers and making their life easier and delivering a better customer experience, that's kind of driven him from early on in his career. And the result of ended up in various kinds of customer support roles. And in particular, over the last 10 years, he's been working with organizations who are growing very fast, building out a compelling customer support experience, trying to apply technology to how they're enhancing and improving the customer experience during the support journey. So, he has had the opportunity to really work in high growth environments. And how he landed in the current role, he was kind of a little bit disappointed that at the speed at which the customer service or customer support industry was really adopting technology and felt like there was a gap there. Some examples of businesses being very innovative, but it wasn't pervasive across the industry. And moving to an organization like Intercom, whose whole kind of raised data is about delivering customer support and having a compelling Customer Support Platform. It was an opportunity, one to work for an organization that was very innovative, and was really driving the technology capability within the customer service base. But also gave him the opportunity to use the things too that customers support are using as well, which meant that he could be a genuine voice to report back to the product team, and really implement a product roadmap, product direction, and really drive the level of transformation around how support is delivered using technology. And at the end of the day marrying technology and compelling human support to really drive a value-add experience for customers. What is Intercom and What They Do? Me: So, for those of our listeners that don't know what Intercom is, could you tell them what your company does? Declan shared that Intercom is an Irish founded company, very much focused on delivering the next generation customer service platform, built for what they call an AI world. But very much recognising that combination of AI technology or automation, working in conjunction with human support that actually delivers the best customer experience possible. That's kind of is the focus of Intercom, it is building and delivering has stated, the next generation customer service platform. It's got a very strong heritage from a technology and innovation point of view. For example, it was one of the first organisations to use messenger technology for allowing or enabling customer communications in support world, was very early in terms of adopting Chatbot, adopting AI ML to do kind of conversation analysis. And now is adopting kind of the latest generative AI capabilities well incorporating that into their platform. Top Areas Organizations Need to Focus On as it Relates to AI Me: So, AI, it's covers quite a bit of things. Could you tell our listeners maybe, I would say, two or three top areas that you think organizations need to focus on as it relates to AI? And maybe what are some of the skill sets because one of the things that they had mentioned when you were introduced to me was, organizations are taking on artificial intelligence, but they don't necessarily have the skill set to manage and integrate it fully with what they're offering to customers. So, could you share with us maybe some of the things that organizations need to look at before they even embrace that type of technology? Declan shared that the first part of question, the three areas where he thinks AI can be applied, the first area is on customer engagement and really the advances that have happened in generative AI and technology like ChatGPT, etc. Now there's an opportunity for the AI interaction with a customer to actually feel a lot more genuine, authentic, more contextual, you're being able to leverage a level of reasoning within the technology that wasn't there before and a lot of chatbot technology. So, the first area where he thinks the current manifestation of AI can be delivered is in delivering a better customer experience in dealing with that technology and that technology being able to automate a particularly transactions or issues that are very easy to resolve, you're taking a lot of friction out of those particular simple transactions. And yet, then being able to handle the work, the more complex transactions to human support team that have all the context that the AI engagement has gone through, understand the customer situation. And it's basically a thing that handover to the human support funding. Secondary, for that human support team themselves with AI tools we can help that team to drive a lot of efficiency and to help them do their job and in a much better way. Even simple things when able to prompt, what they call Smart Reply is the trying to understand the customer problem and suggest possible solution for the support rep. So, that they can then make an informed decision on what's the best solution, applying their own subject matter expertise to the guidance that's been given by the AI co-pilot. And basically, you'll ultimately drive a better solution for the customer. There's even simple tooling that AI can provide, like summarizing a case or a conversation that customers had particularly important if you're doing 24/7 support, and you're handing over from one agent to another, you'll be able to have a tool to actually generate a summary of what has happened today, in a very kind of concise and factual way and use that as the handover mechanism. Again, just makes the life of the support team a lot easier. And the third area where AI can be applied is actually running a support operation. So, they can use a AI technology to really understand the nature of the work that's coming into you whether that cases or conversations being able to analyse those that scale and volume, and look at the trends that are appearing there and use that and to drive improvements, whether that's in the product, whether it's in your support processes, whether it's within the field that you have within your team, those operations inside, the third area where AI can be applied and really drive value. They're kind of the three areas where AI particularly as it is today can be applied and drive a lot of value. The second question you had, which was around what skills that are required. And that's a really interesting question, because there's lots of people are focusing on “Well, you take it all the transactions and your handling them in an automated way, does that mean that the job of the support rep is going away?” Absolutely not, like the job of the support rep is actually changing with AI, they're changing in a very positive way. One, you're taking out a lot of the easy transactions or the easy issues, which ultimately don't provide the billing work for support agents that you like the more complex issues where they can actually demonstrate their subject matter expertise, they can hone their skills, hone their problem-solving skills and effort, they're actually providing far more fulfilling work to support reps in that environment. From a yield point of view, problem solving skills are really important. Generally, if customers are coming through the support team is for the more complex issues. And generally, they're expecting a level of empathy, a level of understanding of them as a customer. So, you've got to have your support rep to can really understand the customer context, provide a personalized experience as a result of that. And that's kind of the traditional support role is changing, but new roles are emerging. Well, a very simple example, like he's hired in what he calls a Conversation Designer in the last few months, because ultimately, if customers are interacting with automated technology, and then dealing with a human support person, you really want to make sure that it's a seamless experienced. And you've got to constantly look at what is that customer experience, is it actually as seamless as it needs to be, is the handover almost seamless from a customer point of view, and you're taking full advantage of all the context that has been gained through the automated that was dealing with that the customer, the customer does not have to duplicate information, you'll actually feel like they're being heard from the very onset of their engagement with you as a support organization. But that has to be designed in, it doesn't happen by chance, like people kind of feel “Oh, I can turn on ChatGPT. Or I can turn on the AI technology and it just worked.” It worked to a fashion but if you really want to make it stand out for you as the business and really drive value for your customers, you got to be very thoughtful around that whole conversation flow. And you've got to understand that not everything can be automated. And you have to think about the human support piece as well. And it's really about AI augmenting and supplementing that human support piece. The roles like conversation designer, or a new role, prompt engineering, how can you educate your customers, like to interface with your AI technology in the best way to actually get the maximum value back in terms of getting their questions answered, etc. So, it's a really, really interesting space at the moment because it's evolving. No one has all the answers, there is the blueprint around exactly how this works. We're almost creating the runbook as we go along and adaptive technology and really understand what that mean from a customer experience point of view. What does it mean from a corporate point of view as well. So, from that point of view, new skills are required, the AI technology is only as good as the information and knowledge that it has access to, who generates that knowledge and information, our human support team, again, much more emphasis on our team developing knowledge articles, developing knowledge artefacts that can be used by the AI. And that's really important as well, like you've got to make sure that you've got a very strong problem solving mindset in your team, that they're really thinking about, “Okay, well customers had this issue come through to me the human support rep, how can I ensure that I can provide knowledge back into the ecosystem that makes sure if another customer has the problem, they're not going to come through another the automated.” That again, another skill set that the whole knowledge management, knowledge creation skill set is really important in support world. So, his own hypothesis is that support role is actually going to become far more valuable in this world of AI first and there are new skills, new capabilities required. So, it's going to be really, really interesting space for people from a career point of view. Me: Very good. So, all of what you said a while ago, I even hear things like new careers coming up, new opportunities, the scope is so wide for persons who are emerging and trying to figure out what they want to do in life. I mean, when you think about where the world was 20 years ago, and some of the careers that exist today, I'm sure 20 years from now, there are careers that are, as you mentioned, just emerging that are going to become top areas that people would want to be pursuing in like we're in 2023 now, so 20 years from now will be 2043, what would be really existing by then? Declan shares that absolutely, there's going to be a whole new set of skill sets required. And it evolve, like when technology has emerged at any stage over the last number of decades, people have been able to adapt technology and change the nature of the roles that they undertook. With that technology is complementing roles and augmenting roles as detect them with AI like complementing the human support experience for our customers and driving the ultimate value for customers. And that's a really exciting because it can be frustrating by the pace of adoption of technology, particularly with the customer support industry. He thinks by and large, we deal with customers the same way we dealt with them a decade or two decades ago. And now there's an opportunity to really transform how support is delivered and that for him is really, really exciting. App, Website or Tool that Declan Absolutely Can't Live Without in His Business When asked about online resource that he cannot live without in his business, Declan shared that he could be very flipping and say Intercom itself, you're probably looking for a different answer. So, while their team do use Intercom, they really love it, he kind of took that back and there are lots of kind of productivity tools he could mentioned, but he's actually going to give one, it's probably maybe a little bit of a surprising answer. But LinkedIn for him is a really, really vital tool for a whole lot of reasons. Like in the support world, it's all about connections and networking and very often in LinkedIn, you get access to people who have new ideas, new opinions, they're sharing thought leadership particularly around AI and customer service, etc. So, it's been a really, really rich ground for getting information around. What are people really considering as best practice? What are they thinking in terms of some of the challenges that they're facing when they adopt AI? Getting those connections and getting access to some of the top leadership articles that are appearing in LinkedIn, for him at the moment, makes LinkedIn really compelling. It's also really useful for there are sometimes situations where you may really need to reach out to customers in a different way, so maybe not through your traditional channels, but you want to kind of have a different channel to talk to maybe someone in a customer's organization that you deal with in an ongoing basis, LinkedIn is great just for getting those network set up and actually engaging customers in a different way. And then from a recruitment point of view, like understanding what talent is out there, who are looking for roles, what are people's experiences, who's a good match for maybe a new opportunity that you have? So, for him, when he took a step back, he thinks of where is your productivity, etc. And actually LinkedIn, the tool that he uses most on a day to day basis, the company and that's what he does in the role there. Books that Have Had the Biggest Impact on Declan When asked about books that have had the biggest impact, Declan shared that the first one is a book called Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones by James Clear. And this is really around the fact that you can drive improvements very incrementally. And he talks about improving 1% per day and how that accumulates over time. And it really gets you thinking about changing your habits, and making very small changes in how you are, but that ultimately delivering your very beneficial result, at the end of the day. The other book is a book called The ONE Thing: The Surprisingly Simple Truth About Extraordinary Results by Gary Keller. And this is around really allowing you to focus on what's the most important thing that you need to do right here, right now, not that you neglect everything else, but you make sure that you give the right priority to the thing that's going to have the most impact right here and right now. And then the final one book called The Creative Problem Solver: 12 Smart Tools to Solve Any Business Challenge by Ian Atkinson. And that gives a framework of 12 problem solving techniques that he found really useful to share with teams and get them thinking about how can they approach different problems in different ways. And that framework of 12 tools or 12 approaches ultimately, if you apply one or two of them to a particular problem, you will come up with some very creative solutions, very creative approaches to actually solving a particular problem. They are three books that he's kind of consistently gone back to in his career, and he's found them very impactful both for him and for teams that he's been working with. What Declan is Really Excited About Now! When asked about something that he's really excited about, Declan shared that it goes back to the excitement that he talked about applying technology. So, at Intercom, they have built what they call an AI bot called Fin, that's the name. And he's been really kind of excited by the fact that he's been able to get early access technologies that they were the first beta customer for them. And that kind of thing that he's working on is how can they apply Fin in the context of their own business, and really drive a different customer experience. And he's got all the team engaged in that, again, for adoption of any technology, you really got to get your team excited, motivated by it, you've got to allow them to influence how you introduce that technology. That's kind of the biggest thing that he's working on at the moment, is allowing him to develop different perspectives around how you can apply this technology, getting his team involved, getting their insights around, what does it mean from a customer perspective? What does it mean from a teammate perspective, and really beginning to build out, what does a support operation of the future look like when you are in what they call an AI first or an AI led world. And it's really interesting, because a lot of things will change around the metric that you use to measure your team, the scale that the team need, how you think about capacity planning, there's lots of different things that can lead into building an operation of the future in this world. And that, for him, is the thing that kind of energizing him the most and allowing him to learn the most as well. And equally for his team, like everyone in the team was really learning through this process and they're really being very thoughtful around how they can introduce this technology in the right way. So, deploying Fin for their own use case, and then to coordinate their customers who are using Fin, that's where his staff and the team are really focused. And he would say he actually don't think he's been this energized in work for many decades. Where Can We Find Nathan Online LinkedIn - decivory Quote or Saying that During Times of Adversity Declan Uses When asked about a quote or saying that he tends to revert to, Declan shared that he has a quote from Henry Ford. And the quote is, “Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.” And he thinks that really captured the benefit and the essence of the failure, everyone fails and he thinks people need to be comfortable with failure, once you're learning from it and in Henry Ford words, moving forward in a more intelligent way on the back of that learning. Me: Now Declan, I just want to extend our deepest appreciation and gratitude to you for taking time out of your very busy schedule, for hopping on our podcast and sharing some of your insights, sharing a little bit about what your organization does, about what artificial intelligence is bringing to different industries, what are some of the opportunities that exist not just from a development and customer experience perspective, but even in terms of new career opportunities and developments that can emerge out of this new phase that we're going into. In this episode, Cheryl and Ashlee Stratton discuss: Pursuing dreams without waiting for your kids to grow up Overcoming health challenges and finding healing through mental resilience and support Finding a fun outlet unattached to goals and outcomes The power of habit stacking and celebrating progress in pursuing goals and hobbies Key Takeaways: Don't wait for the perfect time to pursue your goals and dreams as a mom; start with small steps now, even in the midst of motherhood, and enlist the support of your spouse to make it happen. To achieve your dreams, prioritize what matters to you and seek assistance when needed. Even without a supportive spouse, scheduling and asking for help are vital. When setbacks arise, focus on your desired emotions and surround yourself with supportive individuals for healing and growth. Ashlee loves pickleball because it's a great way to take a break from goal-oriented activities and enjoy a fulfilling, fun, and physically beneficial experience filled with laughter. Habit stacking is a powerful technique for implementing new habits with minimal effort. By attaching a new habit to an existing one, you can achieve success even with limited time. In addition, celebrating progress, no matter how small, is essential to staying motivated and recognizing how far you've come. “Start taking action and then when the hard times come, just be gentle with yourself, work through them, and then get right back to it. Just remember to keep putting one foot in front of the other even through the hard times. Those baby steps count.” — Ashlee Stratton Resources Mentioned: Rock Steady: Healing Vertigo or Tinnitus with Neuroplasticity by Joey Remenyi: https://www.amazon.com/Rock-Steady-Healing-Tinnitus-Neuroplasticity/dp/1989603858 The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change by Stephen R. As Host Chris Schembra reminds us at the close of this episode of Gratitude Through Hard Times, it's never too late to learn something new – IF we're willing to take a pause, step back and offer ourselves grace. And few people embody this practice more vividly than his guest, Allison Hare, who is redefining what it looks like to be a so-called late bloomer. As the host of “Late Learner,” a popular podcast (formerly known as Culture Changers) that explores what it means to open up to new things at any stage of life, she encourages us to embrace spontaneity, authenticity and the unexpected. Having grown up programmed from childhood to be hard-charging, self-supporting and financially aspirational, Allison spent many years as a highly successful sales executive. Problem was, over time, the path she was on was depleting her – and burning through her creative energy. It wasn't easy to shake everything up and risk her secure status quo, but the outcome is undeniable. This is a woman who radiates joy and positivity. Today she is sharing that source of light by helping her clients, seminar participants and podcast listeners to get similarly unstuck. “It was an insane leap of faith when I made the decision not to make any decisions for the foreseeable future, until I could hear my own voice,” says Allison. She's inviting us to much the same: Pause, get quiet and make space for that inner knowing and the integration of gratitude. Are you ready to celebrate not just goals achieved, but the journey itself? This conversation will give you great ideas and tips for doing exactly that!Check out Allison's upcoming Calm in the Chaos retreat experience or book a free discovery call with her at this link.If you'd like to learn more about Chris and his 7:47 Virtual Gratitude Experience, please visit this link. In today's episode of Category Visionaries, we speak with Daniel Erickson, CEO of Viable, a customer experience platform that's raised over $9 Million in funding, about why an automated software tool for conducting true analyses on your critical data could change everything about the way a business makes its decisions. By taking the power of natural language processing technology to the next level, Viable promises real-time updates about current trends in your market, explanations about why that might be, and even advice for the future to help guide your sales strategy and product development in the right direction. We also speak about Daniel's career trajectory from engineering to the boardroom and the lessons he had to learn along the way, why a pivot away from pre-product startups to in-market enterprises was the key to Viable's profitability, and why they have decided not to build analytics tools, but to build out a truly automated analyst itself. Topics Discussed: Daniel's career from an engineer to CEO, and the lifetime business skills necessary to make the transition Viable's original value proposition, and why it ultimately had to pivot away from pre-product startups and shift to where the real money was being made Natural Language Processing and the power of cutting-edge technology in improving the capacity of our automated analytics Why unstructured responses present a challenge for analysts, but also a golden opportunity to understand internal market trends How Viable managed to secure a market fit despite introducing a new category, and why they might not need as much market education as you'd expect Why, regardless of where you sit in the corporate hierarchy, the ultimate truth is that the customers are always your boss. Sometimes you read a book and get a flash of insight - that “ah ha!” moment - about yourself and the ways you interact with others. That happened to me when reading “Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World.” It helped me to understand and justify my interest in (this won't surprise you) EVERYTHING related to geriatrics or palliative care. Also hat tip to Matthew Growdon for recommending the book. Today we talk with Bob Arnold, who has a long list of recommendations for books that have the potential to generate an “ah ha!” moment. The podcast is ostensibly focused on becoming a better mentor, but as you'll hear, we discuss techniques that can help you cope with anxiety, stress, your spouse…the list goes on. In reality, insights from these books can help you be a better teacher, a more curious person, as well as a better mentor or mentee. Bob urges you to buy these books from your local bookstore. To that end, we're not including links with the titles below. Please shop locally. As a bonus, Lauren Hunt, frequent guest on GeriPal, heard we recorded this podcast and wanted to add a couple books to Bob's list (she saw Bob give a talk about these books at the NPCRC Foley retreat). Her list will strongly resonate with women in academics. See below for Lauren's two additions to Bob's list, with her personal commentary. I had heard of course heard of imposter syndrome in the past but I didn't make the connection to myself until I read this article and saw my thoughts printed on the page. You would think that after several years of a number of career successes, the imposter syndrome would have abated for me, but rather I found it getting worse! I thought that I should know more of what I was doing by this point in my career, but instead I often felt like I had no idea what I was doing! So I came across this book and found it very helpful. Young defines people who have imposter syndrome as those who have a “persistent belief in their lack of intelligence, skills, or competence. They are convinced that other people's praise and recognition of their accomplishments is undeserved, chalking up their achievements to chance, charm, connections, and external factors. Unable to internalize or feel deserving of their success, they continually doubt their ability to repeat past successes.” I certainly related to the point that instead of successes alleviating feelings of fraudulence, the opposite happens, because it increases pressures to uphold one's reputation. The pressures can be intense, leaving one wondering if it's all worth it, and prompting fantasies of leaving the charade behind. One thing I really liked about this book is that it places the imposter syndrome into the context of a patriarchal, misogynistic, racist society and organizations that create cultures that cultivate self-doubt (ahem academia). Imposter syndrome is a rationale response to a crazy world. We exist in a society and culture that actually judges women to be less competent at work (the studies she details are SUPER disturbing). It is not surprising we would internalize these norms. Also that being underrepresented in a field creates pressures not only to represent just oneself, but an entire gender. She focuses on women, but these concepts obviously apply to people of color and other disadvantaged social groups. And of course men can have imposter syndrome too. Another part I liked about the book is digging into the notion that one's success is due to luck, or being in the right place at the right time. She dispels these notions by pointing out that, first of all, luck is always present, even for people who are enormously talented and second, being the right place at the right time, having the right connections, and having a winning personality can sometimes actually be the result of skills or abilities, often the result of hard-work, hustling, and efforts to develop one's socioemotional capacity. This is a self-help book, so throughout she offers some useful rules and self-talk for responding to imposter syndrome thoughts. She details different ways to respond to thoughts based on your competence type. For example, if you are a perfectionist, she recommends reframing to a “good enough” quality standard—a mantra I adopted from colleague during the pandemic and has been incredibly helpful for me over the past few years. For the rugged individualist who equate true competence equals solo, unaided achievement, the reframe is “competence means knowing how to identify the resources needed to get the job done.” Another really important idea she raises is that women often have difficult choices to make about their career and its impact on other parts of their families and their other social networks that aren't as pronounced for men in our society. Sometimes it is difficult to disentangle these questions from feelings of imposter syndrome. For example, is reluctance to take on more responsibility at work or relocate because you feel inadequate or is it because of genuine concern about the impact on your family? Moreover, women (generalizing here) tend to place lower value on traditional measures of work success (e.g. money, power, influence) and greater value on connection and meaning. It can require a lot of soul searching to figure out whether one is avoiding career “success” out of fear or that certain paths are just truly not aligned with our values. Finally, towards the end of the book, she introduces the idea of “faking it till you make it” and having chutzpah—i.e going for it. Of course, she's not advocating for a George Santos approach (no lying) but just having a little bit more of a mindset that you'll figure it out once you're on the job. I'd definitely recommend this book if you've ever struggled with similar feelings or mentor people who might. She's got a breezy and relatable writing style that's easy to read, lots of great real-world stories, and piquant quotes. The No Club: Putting a Stop to Women's Dead-End Work by Linda Babcock, Brenda Peyser, Lise Vesterlund, and Laurie Weingart Summary of the book's premise: Work activities fall on a spectrum from promotable and non-promotable (NPT). Promotable activities are those that advance one's career. They use the word “advance” quite broadly to encompass various outcomes, like earning a promotion, getting plum assignments, increasing compensation, and enhancing marketability for other jobs. Promotable tasks are visible to others and increase the organization's currency. Some tasks may be indirectly promotable—they help you develop skills that have the potential to enhance your future success or access to future promotable work. NPT's are important to your organization but will not help to advance your career. These tasks have low visibility (think committees and other service). Too many NPT's can lead to work/work imbalance where promotable tasks get pushed to the side and advancement slows, or work-life imbalance, where advancement continues but at the expense of time in one's personal life (or both). Although not exclusively a problem for women, women are more likely to take on NPT's at work. This is because they are both asked more often and are more likely to say yes when asked. They propose both bottom-up (women saying no to more things) and top-down solutions (organizations making efforts to divide up NPT's more fairly and ensuring everyone is pitching in). Before I read this book, I didn't fully grasp the idea that an activity would be helpful to the organization but not to my own career. Sometimes requests for participation in these activities come with a veneer or prestige and lots of feel-good gratitude. I personally feel a lot of guilt and worry about disappointing people when I say no to things. Even declining to review an article for a journal is accompanied by some stomach knots (it's so hard to find reviewers!) I also place a lot of value in collaboration and working in teams, and the idea of working in a culture where everyone is only looking out for themselves is not appealing to me. But I'm also worried at the level of overwhelm I experience at times and perhaps some of you have experienced as well. How do we ensure that we are on sustainable path where we can stay in and build the world we want to live and work in? The book also got me thinking about what is promotable or not in academia, i.e. what is the currency. I think we all know that grants and publications are promotable activities, but even within that there are hierarchies. Some of these hierarchies I think I understand: a data-based paper in a high-impact journal has higher promotability than an editorial in a lower-impact journal. Some of them I'm not sure about: is an NIH project grant more promotable than a foundation grant and if so why (bc higher indirects?) Also, things like mentorship seem gray to me: senior-authored articles are evidence of independence and potential track to mentoring awards, but people often seem to place mentorship in the NPT category. I think having more transparency and discussion about what is promotable or not would be very useful. Highly recommend this book for women, men, people in leadership, and employees. It's extremely well-written, nuanced, and eye-opening. Connie's motivational quote today is by Stephen Covey “Our character is basically a composite of our habits. Because they are consistent, often unconscious patterns, they constantly, daily, express our character.” Do you have any bad habits? Come on, you know what I am talking about! If we know what is considered a good versus a bad habit, why do we have so many darn bad habits? Most of us have tried to loose weight, get in better shape by going to the gym every day, eat healthier, stop smoking, and the list goes on and on. So if we know what make a habit good or bad, why do we still have so many that often seem to be out of control. What if I told you there is an almost foolproof way to really change up your behavior patterns - Do I have your attention?? Is this even possible? Today your host, Connie Whitman, speaks with James Clear. James and I are going to discuss his new book Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones. We are going to break down how to actually change or form a habit that will stick. Michal Gnatek is the Department Head of the Enterprise Risk Management program at The MITRE Corporation, a not-for-profit organization that operates multiple Federally Funded Research & Development Centers. In this episode, Michal talks about the dynamic group of people he gets to work with across a wide variety of sectors, why this field is such a fascinating space to be in, and the power of networking in this industry. Key Takeaways: A little bit about Michal and his work at MITRE. Because a lot of the work MITRE does is for the federal government, traditional risk models don't necessarily apply at Michal's company. MITRE manages risks in some big sectors like cybersecurity, aviation, data integrity, and healthcare security. Is it a challenge to talk to different industrial sectors about risk? Michal sometimes has to ask his industry expert to dumb it down so that he can figure out the true risk. How did Michal get his start in insurance? Insurance is never really going to go away. However, the past two years really have shown that risk management is part of our daily lives. Michal took a big risk in his career by switching to a startup. What was that transition like? How does a non-compete work when you're switching to a new insurance broker? Michal is grateful for the past opportunities he's had because they've prepared him to be a better risk manager than ever before. If you really want to excel in your career, get good at networking and connecting people to other people. Is Michal ever tempted to go back to the broker side? When you connect the dots through people, really unique opportunities begin to show. Risk management is a far more interesting industry than people give us credit for. Michal loves staying active and has a passion for biking to keep himself healthy. Laura Stewart is the Vice President of Canada's Top Real Estate firm, REC Canada. Having spent the last 8 years helping over 1,200 investors build out their real estate portfolios, Laura has turned her attention to helping other Real Estate Agents achieve top tier success through content creation. Now the owner and operator of From the Ground up Media (FTGU). Her company helps realtors produce, edit, and post content on social media with the objective of helping them build a community to do more deals. Questions We always like to give our guests an opportunity to share in their own words a little bit about their journey and how they got to where they are today. Could you tell us a little bit about what your company From the Ground up Media does? And how is it that you're able to help real estate agents in this capacity? Could you share with our listeners, maybe I would say two to three things or, let's say, activities, or maybe characteristics that are critical for you to be successful as a real estate agent on social media. Now, could you also share with us what's the one online resource, tool, website or app that you absolutely can't live without in your business? Could you also share with us maybe one or two books that have had the biggest impact on you, it could be a book that you read a very long time ago, or even one that you read recently, but it still has a great impact on you. Could you share with us maybe one or two things that you do personally to keep yourself motivated that may spiral a little bit of spark or thought-provoking things in someone's mind as to how maybe they could tweak or even modify their skills in motivation? Now, could you also share with us maybe one thing that's going on in your life right now that you're really excited about, either something you're working on to develop yourself or your people. Where can listeners find you online? Do you have a quote or a saying that during times of adversity or challenge, you'll tend to revert to this quote, it kind of helps to get you back on track if for any reason you got derailed? Highlights Laura's Journey Me: So, Laura, even though we do read your bio, which kind of gives a little synopsis of who you are, we always like to give our guests an opportunity to share in their own words a little bit about their journey and how they got to where they are today. So, could you share that with our audience? Laura shared that she'll try and keep it as short as she can because she thinks she has a fairly unique kind of background, in that she didn't know she was wanting to be a salesperson. She didn't know she wanted to get into real estate when she was a younger person. She really kind of took the lead of a Guidance Counsellor who said to her if she wanted to be successful in life, she needs to get into science. Why was that the narrative at the time, she's not sure. But she was like, of course, she wants to be successful. So, you're an adult, and she's going to take your word for it. So, she went to school for nutrition, and learned pretty quickly on that that was just not going to be her lifelong journey. She did complete the programme and after that she kind of dabbled in the fashion world. She loves fashion, she loves helping her friends and family put together outfits. And she thought, well, this might be something that's interesting. So, she started working at one of Canada's luxury retailers in their buying department, as a junior buyer, like intern at the time just to kind of get her feet wet. So, started right at the bottom from there. She was cleaning the kitchen and doing all the nitty gritty work that no one else wanted to do. It was pretty quickly on there that she realized, you know what she'd rather be able to buy clothes at these stores than actually be a buyer for these stores. And she's doing air quotes right now, which you can't of course see. But because, at some point, you kind of realize like, if she's going to be going up the corporate chain, she's still not going to amount to the type of success that she's looking for. So, she went back to school to do her MBA and it was then that she kind of had this concept of, okay, well, Real Estate Agents are quasi entrepreneurs, particularly the good ones, they get to do everything from running their own finances, their own marketing, and really building their own team and business the way they wanted it. And so that's kind of how she got her foot in the door from a eal estate perspective. What Your Company From the Ground up Media does – How is it That You're Able to Help Real Estate Agents in This Capacity Me: Now, your company that you're currently operating for 8 years as your bio had indicated, is called From the Ground Up Media. Could you tell us a little bit about what your company does? And how is it that you're able to help Real Estate Agents in this capacity? Laura clarified that she's been a real estate agent with a company called REC Canada for 8 years. So, she's been actively selling real estate for 8 years, the media company kind of came out of the real estate company only 14 or 15 months ago. How that kind of came about was in 2017, one of the owners of the real estate company, unfortunately passed away fairly tragically. And he was really the face of the company. He was the personal brand that at the top of the funnel, kind of bringing in all the leads and the rest of them were kind of working those deals. So, at that point, without him they were kind of looking to each other like, “Uh-Oh, what are we going to do now? Like, we have no one to really run this thing.” It was then when the group of them kind of went all in on her business partner, his name is Jas Takhar, and said, “Look, we want you to be the face of the company. And let's help bring us into, this would have been 2018 now. There's these things called podcasts going around, why don't we start a podcast where we are essentially answering all of the frequently asked questions that we get from buyers, sellers or investors.” And that's really where the content began just with an audio only podcast, similar to what you're doing here today. And that kind of spiralled over time. So, they had some pretty heavy hitters on the podcast just out of sheer luck and tenacity of following up with the right people enough times. So, Ryan Serhant, who is on Million Dollar Listing, he said yes to doing their podcast and that's when they realized, “Oh shoot, I think we need to put this on camera.” That was when the light bulb really went off because they realize okay, now that they have video footage of the podcast, they can now put that on YouTube, they can put the audio on all the audio platforms. And then what they can do with the full YouTube video is really slice and dice it to add micro content to all of their social media channels. And that kind of became their easy and quick and dirty way of being omnipresent everywhere without doing additional work, because they were full time real estate agents. And when you when you do that enough, they run a fairly successful business in Canada that other Real Estate Agents are looking to them saying, “Well, what are these guys doing that's allowing them to be successful?” And so, they would meet with a lot of real estate agents who would say, “I want to do what you're doing, how did you do it?” And they come from the notion of, the pie is big enough, there's more than enough business to go around and they would explain to everybody, “Well, this is how we're doing the media. And this is who you could hire, if you wanted to do it on your own, this is how you could do it on your own.” And they would follow up with some of those agents in a couple months. And they really hadn't executed on anything. And so, that kind of starts to make you look at maybe there's an opportunity here where they could be the service provider for these people. And that is what sparked the idea From the Ground up Media where they predominantly help real estate agents, small business owners work toward building an online personal presence through things like podcasts and webinars and things like that. Characteristics That are Critical for you to be Successful as a Real Estate Agent on Social Media Me: Now, I like the idea and definitely the practical strategy that you have employed for From the Ground Up Media, could you share with our listeners, maybe I would say two to three things or, let's say, activities, or maybe characteristics that are critical for you to be successful as a Real Estate Agent on social media. Laura shared that first and foremost, the one characteristic that you really need to deploy is the utmost Patience. So, they've been doing this since 2018, very, very consistently, particularly for her business partner as she was helping him, they use him as the guinea pig and then they filter it all out and kind of all borrow the same tactics for themselves. And the reason why she says patience is because now that she's sat with a number of real estate agents who come to her and say, “I want to be on Tik Tok, and I want to be on Instagram.” They'll do it for a couple months, and their motivation will kind of get them there. But when they start to see that there's really not much traction, or that it's difficult, or that a client came to them and she was taking all their time. The first thing to kind of drop is the media and the content creation. And that's really the last thing that should be dropping, she thinks right now they're seeing it particularly with this, again, air quotes recession that we're seeing, a lot of people are saying, well, I'm taking off now, I'm going to go on vacation, there's no business to be done. Now is when you need to double down, this is the time where you can actually gain that market share that you've been looking for, simply by being the educator. And so, she thinks patience is very, very important. She's been doing social media now for quite some time, consistently, every single day and it's a grind. There are some days where you think you're going to promote a piece of content, and it's going to go viral, and it's crickets. And there's sometimes where you're asking for feedback from people and you're asking them to comment, and there's no engagement. And that's kind of the name of the game. So, she thinks patience is super important. She also thinks Consistency is very important. So, she's learned this the hard way, where she hasn't set up like a schedule for herself and she kind of do a post here and a post there. It really helps, particularly if you're like her to see it on a piece of paper like, “Okay, how many pieces of content should I be filming this week?” And really just hit that goal. Don't worry about the, “Oh, my gosh, this seems so overwhelming, because I need to do 400 posts a year.” And in fact, it should be more than that. Just focus day by day, “Did I do my one post today?” And being consistent is more important than any perfect post. And she says that because she hears people say, “Well, my hair doesn't look good. The lighting is not good. My camera's not good. The angles, not good. I'm sick today and my nose is a bit nasally.” It doesn't matter. What matters is that you're putting in the reps, you're doing it every day because you really have no idea what the algorithm or what people are going to enjoy and like about you. So, if you spend an entire week just to make one 60 second video for Instagram reels, and it flops, you're going to be so disheartened. But if you take only five minutes every day to do one and it's okay content, and you get enough of those reps and eventually you're going to hit somebody and you're going to start to build that community over time. So definitely, consistency is a major one. Lastly and perhaps most importantly, people need to kind of Check Their Ego at the Door. It is overwhelming and it can be nerve wracking to put yourself out there. And that is the name of the game, like you're doing something that a lot of people are just simply not willing to do. We can't all be the most beautiful people in the world, we can't all have the best voice. Or maybe some of us don't even have the knack for writing simple captions in our Instagram feed. So, understand that no one expects to be perfect. No one expects you to come out of the gates being perfect or professional content creator like all the influencers that you see online, they expect you to kind of hack your way through it and say ums and ahs. How many times have she said, um, or had to start her conversation a little bit differently with today? She never said let's stop the recording and start over, she just kept moving with it. And so, once people kind of get over their insecurities, and recognizing that it truly is an insecurity, people will say, “Well, I want it to be perfect.” Your desire for it to be perfect is really just you saying, “I'm scared of being judged by people.” And she thinks once you kind of understand where it's coming from, that it is coming from fear, that's when you can say, “Okay, now how am I going to work around this? How am I going to get through this?” And sometimes it's as simple as like posting it and then turning it off and not going back for a little bit just so you don't feel disheartened, because it is disheartening. You're not going to get all the traction that you want right off the bat and it can hurt, we're all human. She totally understands it. She gets hurt but she still does it anyways. And she thinks that's super, super important. Me: Love it. All right. So, Patience, Consistency and Check that Ego at the Door. I love it. All right, awesome. Thank you for sharing, Laura. App, Website or Tool that Laura Absolutely Can't Live Without in Her Business When asked about online resource that she cannot live without in her business, Laura shared that right now she actually uses a great online resource, which is called Answer Socrates. And that allows you to go in and really type in any type of industry or topic that you want and what it will generate for you is the list of frequently asked questions in around that topic. So again, a lot of real estate agents will say, “Okay, look, I know I have to be consistent, I got the right camera, or I got my phone, or I finally created a Tik Tok account. But now what am I supposed to talk about?” And just knowing that all the topics are there on Answer Socrates. So, let's say you type in real estate, you're going to get a list of 100 topics that people are asking. So, it really kind of pulls from like Google and what people are looking for on Google, when they say like, is the bubble going to burst? Is there a crash coming? Should I sell all my property during a recession? And now it's up to you to answer those questions. Ultimately, she does feel that most of those questions will come from simply phone calls and checking your email like anytime you're working with a client, you're going to get a question, “Well, how much of a deposit should I put down? What should I make the irrevocable date around, for example, on the contract, what should be my marketing strategy for selling my home?” All those questions that you get and you answer so you do know the answers to them, you should just turn the camera on, turn it on selfie mode, and record your answer to those people. She thinks that's a great, great place to get started. Books that Have Had the Biggest Impact on Laura When asked about books that have had the biggest impact, Laura stated that that's a great question. She's a pretty avid reader, she probably read 15 to 20 books every single year. And sometimes she'll read the same book over. Just recently she finished reading for the second time, Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones by James Clear, people talk about this book all the time, it's a great book. She really thinks it just resonates with her because at the end of the day, everything comes down to just you doing again, something consistently. And she really try to use that in all facets of her life, not just business, but her workouts. Like today, she didn't work out as hard as she did yesterday, but she still got her ass there. And so, she thinks that's super important and if you really look at life from that lens, you're going to recognize that it's about like small incremental growth. So, being 1% better today than perhaps you were yesterday. And it doesn't look like much, right? It's kind of like, “Well, that doesn't sound fun. I want 20% growth in a day." But that's just not the way it works. And she thinks when people start to look for those big, big gross, that's where they get burnt out, that's where they get excited and their motivation gets them through the first couple months to do something but then it falls by the wayside because they've gone too hard at the gates. She would rather you let's say we're talking about content creation. She would rather you promise yourself to do one video a week versus saying you're going to do something three times a day when you've done zero previously, like let's build up those reps and build toward it. The second book and probably the most influential book is by Jack Canfield The Success Principles™ - 10th Anniversary Edition: How to Get from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be, that was the kind of the first book that she read that was really about mindset. And it kind of got her into the personal development, self-help space of books. It's a big, big read and it's pretty thick. But the book starts off at the beginning was saying, everything's your fault and once you kind of recognize that it's on you, everything that's wrong in your life, all the problems that you're having are all your fault. And once you kind of accept that that's the case, it really puts the power in your hands to change it. She thinks where a lot of anxiety particularly for herself comes from is when she feels helpless, and she feels hopeless about making any change. And trust, she don't do this like every time something goes wrong in her life, this isn't her automatic response. But if she eventually do get to a place where she says, “Okay, I can make a change, it might be a small change, and might be, it might even just be thinking, look, I can't change that person, but I can change how I react to that person.” That's certainly very, very well in the last couple years. So, she would say those two books are a must, must read. How Laura Keeps Motivated Me: Now, a big part of what you've been talking about Laura as we've started this podcast, we've covered quite a few different characteristics or traits in order for you to be successful. I think it's important also, like, I liked the fact that you mentioned consistency as it related to the different characteristics that you would need to employ in order to be successful as a real estate agent, especially from a social media perspective. But sometimes it's hard to find the motivation, as you had mentioned, to be consistent. So, could you share with us maybe one or two things that you do personally to keep yourself motivated that may spiral a little bit of spark or thought-provoking things in someone's mind as to how maybe they could tweak or even modify their skills in motivation? Laura shared that we're all human, life is hard and it gets tough. And when markets change, and things shift, that's when you start to say, “Oh, my gosh, maybe I wasn't built for this. Or maybe I've lost my touch.” whatever it is. And she thinks real estate agents have it pretty hard, because they're always living pay check to pay check, you're only as good as your next deal, right? It's a very competitive market, particularly in the GTA, there's over 70,000 real estate agents that they're competing with on a daily basis. For her, what's really helped get over those tough times, is the fact that she joined a team and a team is what held her accountable. So, there are days where she doesn't feel like getting out of bed, there are days where she sees an email from a client, and she can hardly emotionally deal with it because there's so much pressure and so much stretch, and we're talking about people's biggest purchases of their lifetime. So, understandably, they're emotional. But that emotion sometimes is displaced and it's put on you. And it's up to you as a real estate agent to calm the waters and calm everybody. And so, she thinks having a team of people who are there to support you when you're down, it's rare. So, they have 54 agents on their team, but the core, core group on their team is six of them, it's rare that all six of them are going to be in a really low place at the same time, don't think that's actually ever happened. And they actually went through, again, a tragic death on the team. One person came in and they were in a good mood, and then the other person came in and they weren't in a good mood, but it's the good mood people to help bring up the other people. And she thinks if you surround yourself with people like that, particularly like minded positive people, you're going to get out of that rut a little bit quicker. The worst thing she thinks you could do as a real estate agent is stay home on those days where you don't feel like it because that one day becomes two days, becomes three days. And before you know it, you've let a whole month go by and you haven't transacted anything, you haven't even made a single phone call. There's something about being in an environment that's competitive, seeing other people make phone calls, and seeing other people do deals and not to take it personally or emotionally on yourself saying, “Well, what's wrong with me?” But instead to use them to fuel your fire, use other people to give you that strength and that courage to just pick up the phone and even if it's just you saying, “I'm going to make one phone call today.” , you're doing 1% better than you were doing yesterday, when made zero phone calls. And so, surrounding yourself with like-minded people and people who want to see you win and everyone's in it together, she thinks is super, super helpful. So that would be her tip, particularly for new agents who have never been in the business before and who aren't sure how to navigate all the cycles of the market, being on a team can certainly help with that. What Laura is Really Excited About Now! When asked about something that she's excited about, Laura shared that they have an incredible product that they're putting out for From the Ground up Media. And she thinks in entrepreneurship, it's interesting, she thought they would take everything that they had learned on the real estate side, they were doing well on that side. And so, it would be easy for them to kind of transition and start a new company and do well on that side. She was certainly wrong in that regard. They've made so many mistakes at times, because they're learning a new role. And not all skills are necessarily transferable. But they've now come up with a great product that she thinks will help a lot. They're calling it The Immersion Programme. They haven't even started it yet, the first one is starting in August. So really, what it's about is having real estate agents. Because again, they hear this a lot saying, “Oh, man, I wish I could be a fly on the wall in your office.” So, they have a fairly big space in their office and real estate agents will come back by and say like, “How is it that you guys are doing deals, or there's always an energy back there.” And so, they're going to actually have them come in and sit with them and watch what they do. They're going to show them what their scripts are to people, they're going to show them that. They just recently came up with the idea of making 3000 phone calls in the next 30 days. Because they know with the market the way it is, they're going to have to make that many more phone calls just to get a single deal. And so, they're hoping that those 3000 phone calls turn into something, of course, but understand that it's not the same market that they're talking about, like people used to make one phone call and be able to do a deal. Maybe not one phone call, but 100 phone calls and do a deal. Now we're talking about 3000 phone calls just to do a handful of deals. And they want people to really see what it takes and to give them the okay in between phone calls, someone asked her a great question on that phone call and she's going to do some social media content around it. So, she's also simultaneously building her social media presence. And so, she thinks when people really get to see how they kind of organize and schedule their days, organize their phone calls, organize their mindsets all around it, she thinks that will be really valuable and hopefully, it's valuable enough that people can actually take that information with them and then do something about it. Nothing's more disheartening than having conversations like this one, like on a podcast and people listening to it saying, “Oh, that's a great idea. I'm going to use that for myself.” But guess what happens Yanique, no one does anything, they go home and life happens, they get an email, they get tired, they go on vacation, whatever it is, and then they forget the very thing that they were super, super excited about. And so, they're actually hoping that by being with them for two, three weeks at a time, that they're really going to take on the persona and not just kind of be lip service. So, that's what she's super excited about. Where Can We Find Laura Online Me: Now, Laura, we would have had quite a few persons that would have listened to this episode once it's published and so they would have listened to it, tapped into all of this awesome content that we've just discussed, and they would like to connect with you online. Where can they find you online? Instagram - @laurastewartto TikTok – @laurastewartto LinkedIn - @laurastewartto Twitter - @laurastewartto Website – www.ftgumedia.com Podcast - https://www.youtube.com/ftgumedia Quote or Saying that During Times of Adversity Laura Uses Me: Now, Laura, before we wrap our interviews up, we always like to ask our guests, do you have a quote or a saying that during times of adversity or challenge, you'll tend to revert to this quote, it kind of helps to get you back on track if for any reason you got derailed. When asked about a quote or saying that she tends to revert to, Laura shared that something she'd seem to tell herself again and again and again, it changes in times, you see a good quote and then in the email and you think about that for a while, but she would say the one that continuously usually comes back to her, quote wise is, “She believed she could, so she did.” She believes so much in the power of the mind, in positive thinking. And again, she's not saying this because she's positive all the time. In fact, her and her team right now they have a funny little game that they're playing where anytime someone complains, they put $10 in a jar. So, they just started it this morning, and guess who's already complained once today? Her, so she's already losing the battle. So, it's not to say that she has it all figured out but whenever she's tapped into the belief that she's capable of doing something, and she's known that from the time she was a little kid, she was always the shortest, smallest kid and she was overlooked often in sports. And for some reason, she was actually really, really good at running and sprinting, even high jump. And people would always say like, “How are you so fast?” She would say, “Well, I just keep telling myself to run faster.” It's a choice. Sometimes things are choices that we make and it's about recognizing all the programming that's happened in our lives to put us in these positions, and then try to out think that and try to take those barriers down over time. So, if she believes she can, she will, and every day she has to kind of keep telling herself that because she gets down like everybody else. And like she said, whenever she truly feels it in her gut that she can do something, she's usually succeeded. So, it's done well for her. Me: Very good. Very good. I like that. It's funny that you mentioned you believe you could, and you would, and you did. And the mindset, the mind is so, so powerful, and you are so true and correct in terms of surrounding yourself with people who will believe in you and people who will cheer you on, and vote for your success. And people who are positive minded and don't necessarily always say woe is me and they're always thinking negatively, because everything starts in the mind. So, I am 150%, behind everything you just said. And I hope our listeners really got some value out of what you shared today. I surely did. And I really appreciate you taking the time out of your very busy day, because I can imagine that you're trying to make 3000 telephone calls for the month, this obviously is not helping you towards that goal. Laura shared that she will always work a little bit longer. But at the end of the day, she believes in this so much, she believes in women in business, getting their voice out there so much. So, it's actually an absolute pleasure for her to be on the show. She really appreciate Yanique taking the time to have her here today. It's just her point of view, she might be right, she might be wrong and it might resonate with some. But that's okay. This is her story, this is her journey and this is kind of where she's at right now. And so, she really appreciates Yanique allowing her to share it with the listeners. In this week's conversation, we focus in on the idea of habits, and how small changes to our habits can have big impact overall in our work as educators. Matt brings in a quote from James Clear's book Atomic Habits to kick off the conversation. We share a variety of micro-habits we use in our own teaching practices that we have found make a big difference for supporting students' learning. We'd love to hear your ideas as well! Please feel free to share your ideas at hallwayconvospod@gmail.com. We'd love to hear your stories and questions too!
