Many people think the millennial generation is a bunch of punks who are lazy, impatient, entitled, and demanding. Many people also think that hunters are uneducated, buck-toothed, rednecks, who have no concern for wildlife. Well as a millennial and as a hunter, I want to get rid of these stereotypes…
Spoiler alert: I got it done! Here's the full story on how I tagged out on my Utah General Archery deer tag in 2019.
The guys from Sahn Outdoors are some of the most down-to-earth, fun, and chill guys I think I've ever met. They love the outdoors and live every day with the #sahnliving mindset. Apart from having a huge Instagram following, Sahn Outdoors runs a killer podcast and has a great YouTube channel. In this episode we talk about several different topics and dive down a load of rabbit holes, but it was one of the funnest episodes I've recorded. The Sahn Outdoors guys talk a lot about being real and genuine, traits that I believe are crucial for true success and happiness. If you listen to their podcast or watch their YouTube videos or view their Instagram feed, you'll easily see that the Sahn Outdoors crew strives day in and day out to produce raw, real, authentic content that is downright fun and entertaining!
This episode of Millennial Hunter is a little more laid back. Ashton and I discuss hunting trends and crazes that are taking over the hunting industry. From flat brim hats to the future of hunting itself, we let loose on what we think the future holds for these hot topics. Some of these hot topics we discuss include hunting merch, Instagram hunters, curved vs. flat brim hats, hunting YouTube vs. hunting TV, popular hunting books, technology use while hunting, and much much more.
Ed Woolstenhulme is the face behind the iconic brand, Muley Tines. What started as a simple desire to post pictures of big mule deer quickly turned into a huge profile of thousands of followers all over the country. Ed is a savvy businessman who is always thinking of entrepreneurial ideas. One of his most recent endeavors is his mineral lick Rack Snacks (formerly know as Awesome Sauce). Apart from all that, Ed is also a hunting guide for his family's guiding service in northern Utah. Ed is just a jack of all trades who knows how to kill big mule deer.
Scott Mackintosh is one of the best guys I know. He's also one of the best hunter's I know too. Despite being extremely lucky drawing hunting expo tags, Scott is a devout defender of hunting and what it means. It goes much more beyond just killing an animal or providing for one's family. In this podcast Scott and I discuss why hunting is so important in today's society and how much hunting means to Scott, himself.
The 2018 hunting season was a roller coaster of ups and downs. In this podcast Ashton and I cover all of our hunting adventures from this year’s hunts. We cover Idaho deer hunting, Utah archery hunting, mule deer in the rut, finding elk honey holes, and hunting in your tennis shoes. Hope you enjoy!
The American Buffalo is one of the most iconic and majestic creatures found in North America. Very few get the opportunity to hunt such an amazing animal. Blake VanTussenbrook was one of those lucky few. In this episode of the Millennial Hunter Podcast, Blake tells us what it was like to hunt these amazing animals and do so with a bow in hand. Blake also talks about hunting abroad, learning life lessons through hunting, and Badlands where Blake is currently working as their marketing director. Blake and I discuss camo patterns and all that has gone in to creating Badlands' signature camo, Approach, and the newly released Approach FX. In the past, I've been known to say that camo isn't that important when it comes to hunting gear. However, after talking with Blake, I realized that it plays a bigger role than I previously thought. The testing and field study that went into the Approach pattern was incredible and much more extensive than I would have guessed. As you listen to the podcast, ask yourself if your camo is "giving you the edge", as Blake puts it. I, for one, need as much of an edge as I can get.
Have you ever had a time when the stars are perfectly aligned, and despite all odds you find wonderful success. Well, That's exactly what happened in Cory Heward's 2018 limited entry archery elk hunt here in Utah. I don't want to ruin any of the story, but I guarantee it's a story you're not going to want to miss. Cory is also the founder and creator of the Moose Bag bladder pouch. Cory has been kind enough to offer the Millennial Hunter followers a 15% discount to purchase your own Moose Bag. To get your own Moose Bag, follow this link (or find Moose Bag on Amazon) and use code "Millennial18".
There are key, fundamental lessons every hunter needs to learn. Every time you go out hunting, you probably learn something new. In this episode of Millennial Hunter we talk about just a few very important lessons that we have learned in our recent hunting adventures.
My wonderful wife Jane is not a hunter. She didn't grow up hunting nor has she ever thought much about wildlife conservation. In this episode Jane and I talk about how she has gained a new perspective on hunting and conservation since we've been married. She was able to join me for my recent archery deer hunt and learned quite a bit just from that one hunt. In the podcast we talk about how she used to perceive hunting compared to how she perceives it now. We also talk about hunting with your spouse, hunting bonds within families, enjoying nature, and much more.
If you’re not setting goals, you’re not moving forward. This is true in life as well as hunting. Ashton and I feel that it is important to have hunting goals if you want to become a better hunter. In this episode of Millennial Hunter, we talk about our own personal hunting goals and how we are going about achieving them. Some of these goals that we share are more long-term, but we mostly focus on the goals that we have for this hunting season. Enjoy the podcast and good luck to all you who have tags this fall, and especially good luck to you Utah archers who are going to be hitting the hills this weekend looking for deer or elk. I'll be out there with you trying to do the same.
There's high country mule deer hunting and then there's Justin Finch high country mule deer hunting. Justin hunts so high up that the only company he has on his hunts is a pack of mountain goats. Justin is an absolute mule deer slayer. Doesn't matter the season, doesn't matter the state, he finds and kills big mule deer. Justin runs a YouTube channel that shows his many adventures, and in my humble opinion, they're some of the best hunting films I've seen. In this episode of Millennial Hunter, Justin drops some heavy knowledge on how to hunt giant mule deer. We also dive into the story of Justin's long-time pursuit of the buck called "Mammoth". Many of you have maybe seen how this story plays out in Justin's video from his 2015 season, but you haven't heard how the story ends. Justin gives out all the details during this podcast. By every definition, Justin is the ultimate Millennial Hunter. I guarantee you'll learn several new tips and tactics in this episode.
Everyone has a goal they are working towards or a dream that they would love to have come true. In pursuit of these dreams and goals, there seems to always be several obstacles and roadblocks that stand in the way of achieving the goal. Many times that obstacle is fear. In hunting, it may be the fear of exploring unfamiliar territory. Maybe it's a fear of hunting alone. In life, it could be the fear of losing your cushy job to try your hat at something you love or perhaps fearing you'll never live up to your full potential. In this episode we talk all about overcoming our fears, both in hunting and in life. Hopefully you will feel a little more motivated after listening to the podcast. No matter who you are or where you live or what you do, fear is something that you will need to learn to conquer sooner or later.
In this episode of Millennial Hunter I got to do a double podcast with Stephen Miller from BowhuntingAZ. Stephen is a great guy who has recently started his own podcast called BowhuntingAZ. He’s a true grit Arizonan who loves to hunt, loves God, and loves his family. He is a huge voice for conservation and he has a killer eye for photography. We talk plenty of things in the podcast such as supplements, hunting and scouting for giant mule deer, pushing for wildlife conservation in the hunting community, starting your own podcast, 3D archery shoots, Arizona tag applications, and much much more. If you haven’t already, make sure to subscribe to both the Millennial Hunter podcast and also BowhuntingAZ’s podcast. I promise you won’t regret it!
Every hunter loves to talk about their upcoming hunts. They love to dream about the exact meadow that they're going to see their mule deer of a lifetime. They talk about their hunting tactics and what they're going to do to make sure they fill their tag on a nice, mature animal. They love talking about it just for the sake of getting themselves more hyped up for their hunts! Ashton and I are no different. We both have several hunting opportunities coming up in a few months that really put us on the edge of our seat. We can't wait for hunting season to get hear! In this episode of Millennial Hunter, we discuss our upcoming hunts and what we're looking forward to most this fall. We also talk about the hunting industry and about our skepticism of working in the hunting industry. We touch on obtaining hunting permission from family members to hunt their land and even some personal dilemmas that I have with that very topic. And, as always, we have a slew of great hunting stories.
"It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it." - Aristotle On this episode of Millennial Hunter, Ashton and I try to be "educated men", as Aristotle puts it. We critique a paper written by a modern-day philosopher, Peter Singer, and give our own thoughts on what the phrase "all animals are equal" means. Many vegans and animal rights activists have their outlandish claims of how we should manage wildlife, and frankly, I've never been able to even remotely relate to them. Ashton and I talk about the history of hunting, why hunting is so important to humanity, the huge effects of hunters' conservation efforts, how we can counter the attacks of anti-hunters, hunting and religious origins, and so much more.
This seems to be a pretty heated debate in today's world. Should wolves be hunted? We humans were the ones who re-introduced gray wolves into Yellowstone National Park over 20 years ago. Now their numbers have grown immensely, so much so that they are no more on the endangered species or even threatened lists. Now that the wolf numbers are stable (and on the rise), we are seeing the wolves begin to turn to farmers' livestock for food. Many are wanting to kill the wolves in order to protect their livestock. Others argue against this by saying it is not right to kill them. What's the best way to control this wolves, if at all? I wrote a paper for one of my college courses regarding this topic. In this podcast I offer a few solutions to this problem through the eyes of several different philosophers and scholars, including the great Aristotle and the genius conservationist, Aldo Leopold.
What do you get when you combine all things hunting, with the graphic designs of YOUR interests engraved permanently into your hard earned trophy? BONETATS! (excerpt form BONETATS Facebook page) Jeff Peterson has been carving custom designs into skulls and sheds for several years. He is a gifted artist and an avid hunter. BONETATS is his creative way of combining both of these passions into one. If you have a euro mount sitting around somewhere in your house, contact Jeff and give that thing a face-lift! Jeff's designs and artistry will make that regular euro mount look like a true piece of art that tells the story of your hunt just by looking at it. Remember, a picture is worth one thousand words. In this episode of Millennial Hunter, Jeff and I talk about how BONETATS got started, how it's rapidly growing, the many mounts that Jeff has done, social media and the hunting industry, hunting passions, and of course I ask Jeff what his definition of hunting is.
It doesn't matter who you are, you have some kind of dream hunt or hunt of a lifetime that you would do anything to go on. For some, it's hunting Yukon Moose in Canada. Maybe you want to go on an international hunt that takes you to a new culture and new terrain that you've never seen before. Perhaps your dream hunt is just a normal, general season mule deer hunt with your dad and this is your dream not because mule deer is a hard tag to get, but because you've never experienced a hunt with your dad and being with him is what makes it so amazing. So what is your hunt of a lifetime? In this episode of Millennial Hunter, Ashton and I talk about our own hunting dreams and hopeful once-in-a-lifetime hunts. We talk about why it's a good thing to dream big and hope for these hunt opportunities because really you never know what good fortune you might come across. We also dive deep into the fact that these once-in-a-lifetime hunts wouldn't happen without the successes of wildlife conservation. Conservation is part of our responsibility as human beings. We need to take care of these animals.
Outdoor Threads Box is a brand new subscription box club that ships street apparel from the best outdoor/hunting companies right to your door every month. Outdoor Threads Box is partnered with some elite hunting companies as well with some awesome company's that you may not know about yet. All hunters out there have their camo gear ready for whatever hunting opportunity that may arise, and finding good camo gear isn't that hard. However finding good hunting and outdoor casual wear is much more taxing and difficult especially when you realize that a lot of this hunting street-wear has a pretty high price tag. Outdoor Threads Box solves that problem for you. In this episode of Millennial Hunter we talk about how Outdoor Threads Box came to be and we get the inside story on how founder, Sawyer Peacock, came up with the idea and how he turned his vision into reality. Subscription boxes are blowing up all over in the retail market, and Sawyer made sure to be the first to bring a hunting and clothing line subscription box to the outdoor community. Towards the latter end of this episode we talk about what it takes to successfully start a company. We talk about how to go for it all and leave no doubt, how to work and strive even though you're not entirely sure what you're doing, and how hard work and grit are essential in the survival of your business. Enjoy the episode!
This is the second part of our essential hunting gear podcast. Here in part two we talk about things such as backpacking food, emergency kits, gear for solo hunting, GPS and tracking, and so much more. We also have a good time laughing about how ill-prepared we sometimes are when we go out hunting. We are all trying to be better prepared and hopefully you'll be able to find some nuggets of knowledge from this episode.
Every hunter needs to have trustworthy gear by his side for every hunt. Maybe you're a minimalist who relies are very little gear. Maybe you've so much gear you don't know what to do with it. No matter the case, your gear needs to last as long as you do on the mountain. This episode is the first of a two part recording I did along with my new co-host, Ashton Edwards. We talk mostly about the absolute essentials in this episode. We also talk about some of our "comfort essentials" and even some of the non-essentials that mix people up sometimes. As always, there's a few stories mixed in there as well.
Millennial Hunter Podcast, Episode 6 with Taylor Murdock: Depending on the person, your fitness level might be either an advantage or a hindrance to you when out hunting. Many of you (if you’re like me) are not exactly where you would like to be health-wise. Now I’m not saying that any of us are pathetic, overweight chumps who should be living in a van down by the river. I’m just pointing out that our current physical state may not be exactly where we want it to be. HOWEVER, that does not mean that we are stuck where we are. In this episode of the MH Podcast I sit down with Taylor Murdock (@murdcountry). When you think of your fitness goal, you probably imagine someone like Taylor; a lean, mean, hunting machine. Taylor spends on average 6 days a week in the gym preparing himself for his next hunt or in some cases his next triathlon. The guy is a savage in the gym! Taylor had 3 different mule deer tags this year and he filled all three! In this episode you will get to know how Taylor physically prepares for his hunts along with some gnarly stories from this past season. We also talk about things like bird dogs, dieting, and hunting with family. It was awesome talking to Taylor and I hope that we’ll get him back on the podcast real soon.
What’s up everyone!? I hope those of you who have been listening to the Millennial Hunter Podcast have enjoyed the first few episodes. I’ve received tons of support from so many of you and you have no idea how excited it makes me to hear such positive feedback. Thank you so much! So I’m going to give everyone a fair heads up… This podcast is a little different from what the previous episodes have been covering. In this episode of Millennial Hunter we’re going to talk about money, and specifically how to save and spend money. No matter who you are, you surely deal with money on a daily basis, but how many of you are actually budgeting your money? Or how many of you are putting money into a savings account every paycheck? Dr. Jeff Dew is an expert on finances and family life. Dr. Dew and I discuss several money saving strategies and budgeting tips that might just help you and your family (or anyone else who depends on you financially). This is a topic that I believe not many people understand well enough. I for one definitely didn’t understand it like I should have before getting to know Dr. Dew. I hope that after listening to this podcast, you can learn a little about how to budget your money and how to make the most out of what you have. Hope you all enjoy this episode!
Ashton Edwards is one of the most stand-up guys I know. Apart from being a husband, father, grad student and developing businessman, he also is a self-taught, DIY solo hunter that knows how to get it done out in the field. I feel that we as hunters all need to take upon ourselves the responsibility to be strong ambassadors for the sport, showing those around us that we respect the animals we harvest and also that we show the world all the numerous benefits of hunting. Ashton is a prime example of a true hunting ambassador.
Welcome to the Millennial Hunter Podcast! In this episode of Millennial Hunter I sit down with the one and only Sawyer Peacock. Many of you probably know of Sawyer through his work as an outdoor photographer, or through his Sheds for Santa project, or maybe just through his social media pages. Whatever Sawyer does, he excels at it. He’s a man of many hats and is an amazing guy who treats you right no matter who you are. In this episode we talk about Sawyer’s rare opportunity to go on his dream hunt of a lifetime and how amazing his experience was with that. We also talk a little bit about being part of the hunting industry and how some of the best people are hunters. Towards the end of the podcast we talk a bit about Sawyer’s Sheds For Santa project, which by the way is an incredible idea and I strongly suggest looking up the Sheds For Santa website to find a way to get involved. Sawyer even leaks out what his next big adventure is, and it’s one that may surprise you. This podcast was tons of fun to make! Hope you all enjoy it as much as I did. So without further ado, let’s get started!
Welcome everyone to the Millennial Hunter Podcast! In this episode of the Millennial Hunter I sit down with one of my long-time friends, Randon Prochnow. Randon is the definition of what America’s “Golden Boy” should be like. He is currently working full-time for Browning Arms at Browning Headquarters in Morgan, Utah, he is also going to school full-time at Weber State University, AND he’s in the National Guard. But the best thing about him is that he’s just a down-to-earth, humble guy who’s trying to make ends meet for him and his young family. In this episode we’re going to talk about what it’s like working for Browning and how he’s able to manage it while also going to school full-time. We also talk a bit about the Grand American Trapshoot which Randon just returned from as one of Browning’s ambassadors for the event. We then wrap up the podcast by talking a little bit about the millennial generation and how it is not OK to follow the stigma of being “lazy, entitled punks” that so much of our generation fits in. Oh, we also talk a little about some hunting, obviously. So kick back, relax, and enjoy!
This is the first episode of the Millennial Hunter Podcast! It's been a long time working on this project, but the hard work has all been worth it. Before I start putting out podcasts filled with hunting stories, hunting tips and tactics, other hunting industry topics, I wanted to do a quick introduction podcast to explain a little what the MH Podcast is all about. In this podcast I'll talk a little bit about what to expect from the podcast, how Millennial Hunter came to be, a little bit about me and my background in hunting, and a few other things regarding the general info of the podcast. Hope you all enjoy!
