Conversations about superpowers. Occasionally salty language.
Kriste chats with Krystal & Ray, two students from her community college writing class. They both are new college students - Ray just graduated from Sweet Home High School, and Krystal finished her GED after the dropped out of high school. They are both thoughtful and genuine. Growing up in a small rural community was very different that Kriste's experience - she grew up in Los Angeles. The ladies' take on the effects of social media is extremely different that Kriste's teenage years. Ray and Krystal have given Kriste a lot of things to think about.
Kriste talks with Lynnette and Amy. They are the proprietors of the Republic of Jam in Carlton, Oregon, and also do cool other things like plan community events and serve on the city council. Kriste is always looking for opportunities to get together with these vibrant women, and she learned some things about flavors and musk melons and check engine lights. Check out their shop the next time you're in Oregon's wine country.
Kriste chats with two local writers, Mike and Harry. She met them when they were all in a critique group offered by the local community college. In this episode, they jump right in when Mike asks, "What superpower wouldn't you want to have?" Good question. They move from there into some happiness talk, through the misuse of power, mood swings, the ability to ruin people's lives, local politics, and on to Resurrection starring Ellen Burstyn. You know, the usual.
This week's guests, Emily and Alexis, were in Kriste's primary multiage class as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders (AKA Room 5). They both graduated from high school this year, and Emily is taking Kriste's writing class at Linn Benton Community College. They got together for a mini reunion. Alexis and Emily talked a lot about their jobs - Alexis works at a memory care facility and Emily is a lifeguard at a local pool. Kriste especially loved Alexis' response to her question, "What's your Kryptonite?"
Rita and Sofia are the guests on this week's podcast. They bartend at the China Delight Lounge, one of Kriste's favorite spots in Corvallis, Oregon. They talked about multitasking, not taking things personally, and the Food Channel. Kriste's ice problems are solved.
Wondering what to do with your Halloween stash of white chocolate? Escape from the bad guys in a dream? Where the f-word came from (AKA the ph-word)? You're in luck - Harrison, Penny, and Kriste cover these topics and more in this new episode of the podcast.
Kriste chats with Paul & Joey. They've been working together at the Darkside, Paul's independent movie theater in downtown Corvallis, for 11 years. Kriste stayed up past her bedtime for this conversation, even though late nights are her Kryptonite. Have you ever wanted a way to make meetings more exciting? Paul has a suggestion. Joey nabs the best superpower for dads. And Kriste just has to bring up Bill Nye.
Kriste chats with Gellie and her son, Gibson. A few years ago, Gellie and Kriste bonded over surviving strokes in their thirties, but they do manage to find other things to talk about. Gibson is in third great, and as you'll see he's a pretty great person.
On a trip to Walla Walla, Kriste chatted with her mother's 90+ year old aunt Dorothy, and Dorothy's son Bill. Dorothy told the story of how she met Bill's dad, Melvin. Bill talked about listening, something he's done a lot of thinking about. Kriste asked Bill has how he gets people to talk to him (he checks in on members of his church at their homes), and his answer has really had Kriste thinking.
Kriste chatted with Noah and Jacinda for this episode, Noah was Kriste's trusty sidekick (or vice versa) when he was a first grade student in her class. Now he's about to start his senior year of high school. Jacinda was in a digital storytelling project Kriste facilitated with a group of high school students. After that, Jacinda took Kriste's writing class, became a regular at a storytelling thing Kriste hosts (Noah is too), and is now a board member of the nonprofit Kriste and Andrea (of episode 1.3) are working to create. Jacinda gets the trio started talking about shape-shifting, and Noah schools Jacinda and Kriste in the world of antonyms. To be fair, this episode was recorded in the afternoon, which is K & J's least effective time of day.
Kriste chats with Pieter and Greg, students from the writing class she teaches at the local community college. The three of them all share a kryptonite - negative people, but they each have a different way of handling them. After discussing doing the dishes, they move on to some dad talk. They went long - a minute past the 15-minute time so that they could hear each other's preferred superpowers. A word of warning - this episode might want to make you eat Kraft mac & cheese, so be prepared. Or text Pieter.
Kriste chats with Kat and Kat's 5 year-old daughter, Macy. They had just met up in Salem, to complete an item for GISHWHES (the Greatest Internet Scavenger Hunt the World Has Ever Seen). The task was to go to your state capitol with a sign supporting a law that protects civil rights. After Macy took some self-timer pictures, the three of them went out for coffee & hot chocolate, and then sat down to record this episode.
In this episode, Kriste chats with her friend Kristin and her 10 year-old son, Henry. They are a military amily happily living in the UK. Kriste and Kristin went to elementary school together, and reconnected as adults thanks to Facebook. Kristin is a delightful person, and is a legend to Kriste's other friends. Henry gets distracted by a talking robot birthday card, and disappears from the middle conversation. Towards the end of the conversation, listen carefully for Henry's honest response to Kriste's question, "What drives you insane?"
