The Patsy Cline Theater isn't just an auditorium — it's Winchester's de facto civic center. From Willie Nelson to Vince Gill to Sara Evans, from the Apple Blossom coronations to 35 years of community gatherings, it's where Winchester has shown up for itself. And the seats, after nearly 40 years of student traffic and standing ovations, are showing every bit of their age. On this episode of The Valley Today, host Janet Michael welcomes an old friend back to the show — Larry Weiss, Executive Director of the Winchester Education Foundation — for a conversation about how the Foundation supports Winchester Public Schools and the year-long Community Comfort Campaign to replace all 1,100 seats and the carpeting in the historic theater. Larry walks through the full scope of the Foundation's work — scholarships for graduating Handley seniors, a unique endowment from Mindy Loy that funds continuing education for Handley graduates who come back to teach in Winchester schools, and the brick-and-mortar work that brought the Emil and Grace Shihadeh Innovation Center into existence (now featured in a national PBS-style documentary called Multiple Choice). Plus: a special August benefit concert at the Patsy Cline Theater by Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Valerie Smith, whose new "musical journal" Maggie's Journal sets her grandmother's post-Civil War handwritten journal to bluegrass, Americana, and roots music — with all proceeds going to the seating campaign. ABOUT THE COMMUNITY COMFORT CAMPAIGN A year-long fundraising campaign by the Winchester Education Foundation to replace all 1,100 seats and the carpeting in the Patsy Cline Theater at John Handley High School — the venue that serves not just the school but the wider Winchester community as a civic center, concert hall, and Apple Blossom event space. Total project cost is estimated at approximately $1 million. New seating and carpeting installation is targeted for summer 2027. WAYS TO PARTICIPATE • $350 names a seat — name tag can honor anyone (teacher, parent, classmate, graduating student) • Purchase an entire row to reunite a graduating class • Take one of the old seats home as a souvenir when they're uninstalled • Any contribution — from $10 to $10,000 — moves the campaign forward • The balcony will be dedicated in honor of Russ Potts • All 1991-era donor name tags will be moved to the new seats, preserving the theater's history BENEFIT CONCERT — VALERIE SMITH'S MAGGIE'S JOURNAL Saturday, August 1, 2026 • 7:00 PM Sunday, August 2, 2026 • 2:00 PM matinee Patsy Cline Theater, John Handley High School LINKS & RESOURCES • Winchester Education Foundation — winchestereducationfoundation.org (click the Community Comfort Campaign graphic on the homepage) • Valerie Smith — thevaleriesmith.com (concert tickets and information) THE VALLEY TODAY with Janet Michael — A decade of conversations. Drew Perkins welcomes back Ted Dintersmith to discuss the urgent need to move away from an education system obsessed with standardized testing and toward one that empowers students to do real, meaningful work. In his new book, Aftermath, and documentary, Multiple Choice, Dintersmith argues that our current system is "perfectly designed" to produce results that are increasingly irrelevant in an age of AI and automation. Links & Resources Mentioned In This Episode Ted Dintersmith.com Book: Aftermath: The Life-Changing Math That Schools Won't Teach You Film: multiplechoicefilm.com The ThoughtStretchers (then TeachThought) Podcast Ep. 115 Let's Talk About What School Could Be (2018) Have some feedback you'd like to share? You can email me at drew@thoughtstretchers.org. If you enjoyed this episode, please share it and please leave a review on Apple Podcasts or wherever you're listening. A significant portion of this conversation focuses on Ted's critique of the traditional math "treadmill." Drawing from his new book, Ted explores the "What and How" of teaching math. He argues that the current "What"—a heavy focus on symbolic manipulation and rote procedures—is largely obsolete. Regarding the "How," Ted shares inspiring examples of teachers who have moved toward Project-Based Learning kind of instruction. He describes classrooms where math is taught through real-world applications—like analyzing local economic trends—where learning happens through trial, error, and collaborative inquiry. By centering math on student agency, Ted argues we can move from "math trauma" to empowering students to solve complex, non-routine problems. [00:15:45] The Math Treadmill – Ted breaks down why our current math curriculum is a "filter" rather than a foundation. [00:22:10] The "What" of Math – Shifting from symbolic manipulation to data literacy and quantitative reasoning. [00:28:40] The "How" of Math – Using real-world problems to teach mathematical thinking instead of rote procedures. There are few words that strike fear into the heart of a student like the word “test.” Now, I'm informed that some are to be feared more than others. For example, an essay test is a 10 on the anxiety scale. You have to know your stuff. True and false, well, that's not as bad. And multiple choice, oh man, that seems to be especially popular among students. See, there's the right answer right in front of you; just pick the right one. Now, occasionally multiple choice tests are complicated by those confusing words: All of the above, or none of the above, which makes it a little tougher. Actually, academic tests are pretty good preparation for the real test that you take for the rest of your life. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A WORD WITH YOU today about “When Marriage Is a Multiple Choice Test.” Now, when you go into training on how to counsel people, one of the first things they'll tell you is to ask this question when you're counseling someone, “What are all your options?” And I've often done that when I've tried to help someone…to list all of the choices that they have in a given situation. So, get your multiple choices right in front of you. It's especially good advice when it's your marriage that's being tested. And, by the way, every marriage is tested some time or another. Maybe it happens in all those expectations you had, or suddenly confronted with the reality and what you expected him or her to be, or what you expected marriage to be. Well, reality is almost always different. And maybe that's hitting you. There's conflict that doesn't seem to be resolved. Maybe there are secrets about your spouse that you never realized before like you do now. Maybe you've been very wounded by this one who's closest to you. Or communication is like totally broken down. Maybe your mate is very busy and you're very lonely. Maybe you've even been violated by the ugliness of unfaithfulness. But when your marriage is hurting, what are your choices? Well our word for today from the Word of God is in Malachi 2:13. “Another thing you do…” God says, “…you flood the Lord's altar with tears. You weep and wail because He no longer pays attention to your offerings or accepts them with pleasure from your hands. You ask, ‘Why?' It is because the Lord is acting as the witness between you and the wife of your youth, because you've broken faith with her. Though she is your partner—the wife of your marriage covenant. Has not the Lord made them one? Do not break faith with the wife of your youth. “I hate divorce”, says the Lord God.” Now, in a world where divorce is considered one of your multiple choices, God says, “I hate divorce.” He doesn't say, “I hate divorced people.” He says, “I hate divorce.” One of the most important choices my wife and I ever made was this: Divorce is not and never will be one of our options. You know what effect that has in a marriage? All your energy goes into fighting for your marriage. It's like a house you know you're going to stay in for the rest of your life. You put all your energy into making that one work and fixing it up. None of your energy should be converted into considering a divorce possibility. As soon as you acknowledge that possibility, you make it much more likely. Now, there are a lot of multiple choices: To pray in faith that God will change things, to seek counsel, to talk to other couples, to schedule time to talk it through, to fight it through, to admit you've been wrong, to choose to forgive. But it strengthens that marriage to eliminate ending that marriage as an option. Now, while the Christian world opens the door wider and wider for believers to choose divorce, God hasn't changed. He still hates divorce. Again, not divorced people. When marriage becomes a multiple choice test, use every choice there is to fight for your marriage. And don't divert energy into how to end it. Jesus' first miracle was at a wedding, and He's still doing marriage miracles.

A vintage AOFA concept that nobody liked is back! In late 2022, Sonny and Tom played a game in which they read the beginning of movie descriptions and attempted to guess how the movies ended. The concept was nice, but the outcome was awful. Today, wiser in the years that have passed us by like cars on a dusty highway, Sonny and Tom have revamped the concept with a new take. Instead of guessing together, one host who already knows the ending of the movie will present the other host with three multiple choice options for how it ends. And while this isn't an official game episode (it's simply an exhibition match), the concept certainly plays like it's a game episode. Which means you can play along as the boys try to guess how movies such as Spring Breakers, The Power of the Dog, Longlegs, and Megalopolis end.Earlier, the boys encounter an interesting film in their opening segment. As they try to imagine Arnold Schwarzenegger playing Melvyn Douglas's role in the Paul Newman flick Hud, they realize that this movie is simply the Manchester by the Sea of its time. In the process, they discover a quirk in their rating system and learn that good and bad are both equally punished by the inevitable misery of life. What if everything we've been told about math education is backwards? In this episode of Trending in Education, Mike Palmer is joined by Ted Dintersmith, venture capitalist, filmmaker, and author of the upcoming book Aftermath: The Life-Changing Math That Schools Won't Teach You to discuss why our schools are still teaching low-level math mechanics that phones and AI already do perfectly. You can learn more about Ted's work at What Schools Could Be. Ted shares his journey from the world of high-tech innovation to becoming a "code red" alarmed citizen advocate for radical school change. We dive into how high-stakes exams are inadvertently training students to compete with AI in areas where computers are unbeatable, while ignoring the creative and conceptual math, like probability, decision-making frameworks, and estimation, that actually shapes lives. From Moneyball statistics to the dangers of misinterpreting healthcare data, Ted explains why math should be a tool for empowerment rather than a metric for punishment. We also take a "lightning round" trip through Ted's prolific career, including his work with the late Sir Ken Robinson and his influential documentaries Most Likely to Succeed and Multiple Choice. Whether you're a parent trying to preserve your child's curiosity or an educator looking for a more relevant curriculum, this conversation offers a refreshing and urgent blueprint for what school could be.
CrowdScience listener Griffith in Ghana, isn't JUST a CrowdScience listener. He's also a listener to our sister show on the World Service, Unexpected Elements. But he's noticed something funny. In the weekly Unexpected Elements multiple-choice quiz, the answer is almost NEVER ‘a'. It's nearly always ‘b', or ‘c'. Why is this? When we set the quiz, why are we so reluctant to choose option ‘a'? His question leads presenter Alex Lathbridge on a journey into the murky depths of our brain, where he discovers the cognitive biases which so often trip us up in games of chance, or probability. Your brain might be a marvellous machine when it comes to figuring out how to understand the world, but sometimes, in the name of efficiency, it takes clever little short-cuts to the answer. This pragmatic approach to problem solving helps us manage an incredibly complicated world. But occasionally, especially when it comes to mathematics, chance, and probability, it leads us in the wrong direction. With the help of mathematician Kit Yates from the University of Bath in the UK, and some rather stale sweets, Alex will be finding out how to win at games of chance. Alex also explores the world of gaming, and gambling. Games of chance in which our intuition sometimes lets us down, and makes us choose unwisely. Rachel Croson, Professor of Economics at the University of Minnesota, USA, talks us through how the human brain can work against us. But can knowledge of those human pitfalls help us to win? Alex hears from Maria Konnikova, who turned her research on the psychology of poker into a successful gambling career. Can we really use maths to beat our brains, and learn how to win more often? Multiple-choice questions (MCQs) are the foundation for certification exams. MCQ writing by students is an evidence-based learning modality; however, studies on this strategy in graduate nursing programs are limited. In this podcast and article, Drs. Patti Griffith and Patricia Pawlow describe the outcomes of their scoping review on students writing MCQ in healthcare professions education. Writing MCQs is a valuable active learning strategy for graduate students who take high-stakes examinations. MCQ quality improves with faculty involvement. Working in small groups increases students' knowledge and positive perception of this strategy, as did exam inclusion of student-generated MCQ.
If you've ever wondered why so many high school graduates seem ill-prepared for life in the real world, you aren't alone. On this episode of Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different, we have a powerful conversation with education innovator Ted Dintersmith where the broken state of America's education system is laid bare, and a refreshingly practical vision for the future is explored. The discussion, centered on Ted's new documentary “Multiple Choice,” makes a compelling case for reimagining high schools as launchpads for life, not just college admissions. As Ted puts it, “Imagine if the purpose of school were to prepare kids for life instead of standardized tests.” It's a simple idea with revolutionary implications. You're listening to Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different. We are the real dialogue podcast for people with a different mind. So get your mind in a different place, and hey ho, let's go. Ted Dintersmith on the Cost of Standardization In today's high-pressure academic environment, schools have become laser-focused on standardized testing and college prep at the expense of real-world readiness. Ted Dintersmith is unflinching in his critique: “You hold people accountable to test scores. What are they going to do? They're going to do test prep. And I think it's damaging the futures of millions and millions of kids.” The impact is startling. Curiosity, creativity, and a sense of purpose are “crushed”, replaced by a relentless treadmill of test drills and application padding. What's more, society has paradoxically managed to “make people less capable at older and older ages.” Where previous generations might have been working, serving in the military, or starting their own ventures in their teens, many of today's young adults struggle to launch. The root, according to Ted , is a model of schooling stuck in the late 19th century, one designed for a world of rote tasks, not the dynamic, creative economy of today. “We've gone from 99% of the jobs being ‘here's your assignment, do it' jobs to basically close to 0%. Now we need people to create and invent their path forward,” Ted explains. But our schools, he laments, “put that into a meat grinder” that discourages independent thought and problem-solving. Winchester's Innovation Center: Real-World Learning for Every Student Perhaps the most hopeful moment in the conversation is Ted Dintersmith's description of the Innovation Center in Winchester, Virginia: a school that's rewriting the rules. There, every student, regardless of their academic track, participates in hands-on, career-oriented learning. From carpentry and welding to health care and artificial intelligence, the center offers a real taste of practical skills and modern technologies. What sets Winchester apart is that this isn't a program for a select few. “Every kid is spending healthy amounts of their high school time in there, in the Innovation Center,” Ted shares, highlighting how this all-in approach bridges the gap between vocational and academic pathways. Importantly, college-bound students benefit, developing resilient, adaptable skills alongside their career-focused peers. “If a kid was at a school and they optionally took welding instead of AP chemistry, an elite college would turn them down… But here, because that's what all the kids do, they say, ‘Oh, well, they kind of had to do it. I can't really ding them for that,'” - Ted Dintersmith The results are telling. Students who might have once been written off as “suboptimal” are thriving. College applicants stand out with compelling stories of real achievement. And, perhaps most importantly, the community is united in supporting all students, regardless of their background or political leanings. “The school sends a message to the community that we respect all paths, and the community comes together irrespective of where they are in a very broken country, politically. Those political views don't matter. It's like,

High school math left most of us staring blankly at the board, convinced compound interest was just a fancy way to say "confusing." But what if math could be fun, relevant, and—dare we say—life-changing? In this episode of The Stacking Benjamins Show, Joe Saul-Sehy, OG, and Neighbor Doug welcome economist, education reformer, and documentary filmmaker Ted Dintersmith to the basement for a conversation that makes math feel less like a chore and more like a cheat code for life. Dintersmith, best known for his education advocacy and the acclaimed documentary Most Likely to Succeed, joins us fresh off the release of his latest book, Aftermath—a compelling look at how we rethink learning in a world that's evolving faster than ever. With over a decade visiting 500+ schools and a deep passion for practical math, Ted shares how skills like estimation, probability, and prediction can help you make smarter decisions—especially when it comes to your money. Why Prediction Beats Perfection Ted explains why being roughly right about your spending, investing, and life planning is more powerful than being precisely wrong. Consumer Math is the Real MVP From family budgets to grocery store run-throughs, Dintersmith makes a case for math that actually applies to your everyday decisions—and shows how parents and educators can teach it at home. A Fourth-Grade Science Test Gone Wrong An unforgettable story about how one exam nearly crushed a curious kid's confidence… and what it says about how we measure learning. The Financial Advisor Dilemma Solved Joe Saul-Sehy and OG unpack the key differences between bank advisors and independents, including fee structures, fiduciary responsibilities, and what really matters when choosing your financial guide. Lights, Camera, Reform Dintersmith shares the powerful stories behind his documentaries—including Most Likely to Succeed and the upcoming Multiple Choice—and why his new book Aftermath is a must-read for anyone who believes education should prepare us for real life. The Psychology of Math Anxiety and Money Mistakes We explore how bad math experiences lead to financial decision paralysis, and how to rebuild confidence one calculation at a time. Neighbor Doug's Trivia Takes the Stage Whether it connects to math or not, Neighbor Doug delivers his signature trivia moment with flair—and possibly a tangent or two. Math shouldn't be a barrier to better money decisions. This episode arms you with a fresh mindset for yourself, your kids, and maybe even your school board. If you're a math teacher, financial coach, or just someone who once cried over fractions, we want to hear from you. Imagine a civics classroom where every student—regardless of ability, background, or learning style—can fully engage with the democratic principles that shape our society. Three exceptional educators from a civic literacy cohort share their revolutionary approaches to differentiating civic education, transforming traditional multiple-choice instruction into vibrant, accessible learning experiences. These master teachers, representing elementary, middle, and gifted education, reveal practical strategies for making civic concepts come alive for all learners. From inquiry-based activities with "low entry, high ceiling" approaches to creative assessment methods that prioritize understanding over memorization, they demonstrate how modern civic education can reach every student in meaningful ways. You'll discover how innovative techniques like hexagonal thinking help students visualize connections between civic concepts, while role-playing activities and simulations transform abstract principles into tangible experiences. The teachers share how they've successfully used everything from Hamilton songs to fake guillotines to make civic knowledge stick, proving that engagement and emotional connection are the true keys to lasting civic understanding. Most powerfully, these educators explain how they connect abstract constitutional principles to students' everyday experiences—comparing international conflicts to playground disagreements or helping students see how First Amendment rights apply in their daily lives. Through these real-world connections, civics transforms from a collection of facts to a framework for understanding society.Whether you're a new teacher seeking a foundation for teaching civics, a veteran educator looking for fresh approaches, or anyone passionate about preparing the next generation of engaged citizens, these insights will inspire you to reimagine how we teach democracy. Join the movement to ensure every child receives the civic education they deserve and develops the knowledge and skills to become active, informed participants in our democratic process.
