Hi, I'm Beverley Joy of Simply Story Poetry. I wrote this poem to share at the men's prison Easter service as a Prison Chaplain. What a time in history to share it for the first time publically. Three years of the pandemic, devastating floods and fires throughout Australia and the world, the current war in Ukraine, unrest throughout the nations of our world, millions of homeless refugees, pollution beyond our capacity to correct. Just to name a few of the worldwide problems let alone local and family problems facing us. We pray "Lord, come quickly." Revelation 22:20. But God in His patience and love waits. For God to intervene will require Him to punish those who do not love Him. So He waits. 'The Lord isn't really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.' 2 Peter 3:9 NLT 'For this is how God loved the world: He gave His one and only Son so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.' John 3:16. You can read my poems at Simply Story Poetry on Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter and at simplystorypoetry.com and follow me on Instagram. Hi, I'm Beverley Joy of Simply Story Poetry. This Christian devotional poem is inspired by the Bible story, in John chapter 9, of the blind man who was healed by Jesus. When the man returned from following Jesus' instructions to wash, the people who saw him asked him in amazement about his healing. They took him to the Jewish temple to show him to the authorities, who kept questioning him about how and who healed him. I have published another poem that includes John 9 verses 1-3 titled 'God Knows Firsthand Your Pain' from verse 9+ (April 23, 2021). I wrote this poem following the death of my nephew as a young adult by suicide. In John 9 verses 1-3 the disciples ask Jesus "Whose sin caused this man's blindness?" I follow these conversational verses with gracious and encouraging words from Jesus based on a few favourite Bible verses. This new poem focuses on our spiritual blindness before being spiritually healed by Jesus, and how our colleagues, friends and family recognize and question the change in our behaviour and our outlook on life. I wrote this poem while I was a Prison Chaplain and shared it in a prison chapel service as the message was centered on this Bible story. You can read my poems and verses at Simply Story Poetry on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and the website. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/simply-story-poetry/message

Hi, I'm Beverley Joy of Simply Story Poetry. This Christian poem is based on the Bible Story of the Woman and the Two Coins in Luke 21:1-4. This was another poem I wrote while a Prison Chaplain at the Women's Correctional Centre in 2017. I wanted to tell this story to encourage the women in prison, that the Chaplains were a representation of God's love for them. I have included other Bible verses that relate to charity and giving - Luke 20:45-47, Luke 21:1-4, Matthew 25, Deuteronomy 10:18, Psalm 82:3-4, 2 Corinthians 8:12-15, Exodus 16:18. I include a list of reference books, at the end of this poem, that I study on the subject prior to writing this poem. Most of my poems evolve from books that I have read or Bible passages that I have studied. Hi, I'm Beverley Joy of Simply Story Poetry. I wrote this poem, in 2016, while I was a Prison Chaplain to encourage the female prisoners to 'Learn about God's love and forgiveness for them and find rest and peace in Jesus.'  It is based on Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is comfortable, and My burden is light.” I learnt these verses at a young age, but I never understood the meaning of them. How wonderful it was to learn the context of these verses. “Papa, please tell me a story.”  That’s Cain, or maybe Abel, asked Adam to tell them a story, a story that will make the past more clear so they can face the future with greater certainty, courage, and hope.  It’s a question every Father and Mother has been asked by the “inquiring minds” who sit beside them in the light of a cooling evening.    Each month I imagine that you have just invited me to “tell you a story,” a true tale of The Creator’s love that will help you understand the past and so face the future with more certainty, courage, and hope. In 1999 Former Conservative MP and Cabinet Minister Jonathan Aitken was convicted of perjury at The Old Bailey in a famous and widely reported case. His political career in ruins, he received an 18-month prison sentence starting at the high security HMP Belmarsh. Jonathan’s story is quite unique—and at the time, he was one of the most vilified personalities of his generation. As a journalist he spent some seven years on Fleet Street and as an author has written some 17 books including acclaimed biographies on Nixon and Thatcher. These days he is a London based Priest serving as Prison Chaplain in HMP Pentonville in East London and Assistant Minister in St Matthew’s Westminster Church. Our fascinating conversation took place in his London home. Listen in as we chat over the past, present and future of a life fully lived. This is Your London Legacy  “I was playing in the sandpit in my aunt’s garden—suddenly there came over in the sky a sound of a noisy engine. And this was a doodlebug, a flying bomb that came over.” 16:10 One of Jonathan’s earliest memories is of a flying bomb chugging its engine overhead while he played in a sandbox—an object and event of historical intrigue no doubt, and an interesting starting place for a future politician. But before Jonathan fully entered the political life he was a journalist, and as he says, a young journalist goes to where the news is. This meant he traveled all over the world—Vietnam, the Middle East, Africa, and covering Nixon’s election in the states. But he always felt like a spectator looking in, and longed for the political life of being in the center of the events he was covering.   “I’ve often asked myself the same—because it wasn’t really worth doing, covering it up. I think it was a combination of pride—and fear.” 30:40 Jonathan went on to become a Defense Minister – and on a trip to Paris stayed at a hotel that would bring about the fall of his career by accepting to have his room paid for by someone else. A hospitality he didn’t know would change his life – by eventually trying to cover up this small courtesy. The media upon finding out that this bill was footed by a figure from a foreign government went after him – and after a single comment in trial, a false one, Jonathan was prosecuted for perjury and sentenced to 18 months in prison.   “I was, I think – ruined, but not totally heartbroken.” 39:10 While undoubtedly a moment where his whole life unraveled, Jonathan didn’t see going to prison as a death sentence. There was a feeling that life would go on and something new would happen—as indeed it did, through a chance prison encounter with an inmate and refusing a certain collection of dirty magazines, no less. Jonathan had turned to faith to help guide him through his sentence and it slowly accumulated during and after his incarceration until he found himself studying at an Anglican theological college. Since he had seen how prison was the great equalizer where no one behind bars is more important than anyone else, he felt compelled to continue practicing his faith among those he had once called his brothers. As a prison chaplain, Jonathan now raises awareness about the quality of prisons today and the dangers that lay within, and also beyond the cells once inmates are released. He has seen how people end up right back behind bars and is working towards practical and societal changes to help reintroduce people to the working world, life at large, and the faith behind it all.   Links JonathanAitken.org (https://www.jonathanaitken.org/) Support this podcast
