From selling drugs to advocating against them. Today we are joined by the author of 11 Felonies, Paul Wait. Today’s episode comes with a trigger warning as we discuss some heavy topics included but not limited to, drugs, abuse, alcohol, addiction, suicide. 11 Felonies intimately brings its readers along as the author (Paul Wait) recollects his younger years. From the first time, he smoked weed at the age of 11 to getting arrested for selling drugs. Throughout the book, he confronts things such as bullies, addiction, divorce, loss, and mental health issues. After getting arrested and watching his loved ones fall victim to drugs and alcohol, he turned his life around and is now advocating against drugs like benzodiazepine and other substances. He educates us on the silent benzodiazepine epidemic, shares how therapy has changed his life, how he fought to change his life trajectory, and what he’s learned along the way. A huge part of this podcast is actively seeking to understand other people's perspectives and struggles. Even if the topic is something that is typically avoided. This episode is the first in a subseries called, "Uncomfortable Conversations." I would like to give a trigger warning as this episode is about self-injury and may be uncomfortable or disturbing for some listeners. I believe it's extremely important to talk about it. Dedicated in loving memory to my dear friend, David Colbert. All things shining. In this episode, we discuss how we want to be remembered. Not just when we pass away, but in daily interactions. Message Me On Social Media! Here is a message from David's friend Matt. I will never forget sitting in a pledge meeting at the fraternity David and I were joining together at Ole Miss. At the end of the meeting, active members were tormenting all of us pledges and asking us to do ridiculous acts, chores, etc. David looked at me and said, “What are we doing Matty? We don’t need this.” The two of us quickly escaped to my car and sped away. I’m sure our escape route ended somewhere enjoying a cold beer and discussing life. Just like that, our fraternity days were short lived. David took me under his wing and helped me quickly realize to stop caring so much about what people think, to be myself, and to enjoy the brotherhood and fellowship of friends that life would naturally bestow upon me. David had no fear and lived life to its absolute fullest. He had no reservation about following his instincts, often even on a whim. This allowed him to live in many different places, experience new things, and make many friends around the world. Most importantly, David never forgot about the friends he made throughout his journey. I hope the streets of gold have speed limits that share a similar leniency to those of Texas.
