11 mars 2011.

13 years have passed since the catastrophic events of March 11th's Great East Japan earthquake & tsunami, along with the nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi Plant. Fukushima, as a prefectural community, has demonstrated incredible resiliency in its recovery efforts, but unfortunately there still is a residual stigma attached to the prefecture. One way that Fukushima has been combating that reputation is through some creative initiatives involving education through first-hand experiences. Today, the Krewe sits down with William McMichael, an integral figure in these projects, to discuss how Fukushima University's Fukushima Ambassadors Program & Hope Tourism have helped introduce the world to Fukushima in a different way. ------ About the Krewe ------The Krewe of Japan Podcast is a weekly episodic podcast sponsored by the Japan Society of New Orleans. THIS IS A REPLAY OF EPISODE #4 Dr. Namie will discuss his journey as a workplace bullying researcher and advocate over the past 25 years and his efforts to change the nature of work through the adoption of the Healthy Workplace Bill. From his experience of vicarious exposure to his wife's experience of bullying, through their formation of an organization to train and develop anti-bullying advocates across the United States, supporting bullying targets and consulting with organizations, unions, and leadership groups as well as serving as an expert witness. Dr. Namie, his wife Dr. Ruth Namie, and the Workplace Bullying Institute have been pursuing healthier workplaces for years. He will discuss a number of important concepts that are essential in establishing a psychologically healthy and safe environment.
Federal laws are on the books that require physical safety and prohibit harassment and discrimination on the job. However, handling complaints that accuse managers, or even executives, of being disrespectful or abusive can be legal gray areas that leave HR caught in the middle. Dr. Gary Namie, Director of the Workplace Bullying Institute, and Suffolk University Law Professor, David Yamada, share practical ways to address these delicate situations. According to Dr. Namie: “Bullying is all about a narcissistic individual of any rank fouling up the work process and productivity and team dynamics. So bullying actually prevents work from getting done. That's the hook that HR can use because if they can show the documentable harm on productivity, then the C-suite has to care … because bullies are very expensive to keep.” Highlights [2:32] The Healthy Workplace Bill [7:23] What qualifies as bullying or abuse [10:52] HR's toxin handler role [14:36] The business case for doing something about bullying [26:57] Types of bullies and bullying traits [32:57] When bullying is written off as personality conflict [33:58] Alternative remedies to a zero-tolerance policy [41:02] High-performing bullies [45:48] Gen Z's influence [46:30] Helpful actions HR can take Guest Bios Gary Namie, Director, Workplace Bullying Institute Gary Namie is a social psychologist who began consulting for organizations as “The Work Doctor” in 1985. He also taught graduate and undergraduate courses in management and psychology and co-founded the Workplace Bullying Institute with his wife, Ruth, to prevent and correct abusive conduct at work through education and training. The couple has also written the books “Bully-Proof Yourself at Work,” “The Bully at Work” and “The Bully-Free Workplace.” David Yamada, Director, The New Workplace Institute at Suffolk University Law School David Yamada is a globally recognized authority on workplace bullying and psychological abuse. He authored the Healthy Workplace Bill, which has become the template for enacted and proposed workplace anti-bullying state laws throughout the U.S. His blog, Minding the Workplace, has attracted more than 1 million page views since launching in 2008. “English et al.[115] report that children whose families are characterised by interpersonal violence, including psychological aggression and verbal aggression, may exhibit a range of serious disorders, including chronic depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, dissociation and anger. Additionally, English et al. report that the impact of emotional abuse "did not differ significantly" from that of physical abuse. Johnson et al.[116] report that, in a survey of female patients (n = 825), 24% suffered emotional abuse, and this group experienced higher rates of gynaecological problems. In their study of men emotionally abused by a wife/partner (n = 116), Hines and Malley-Morrison[117] report that victims exhibit high rates of post-traumatic stress disorder and alcoholism. Namie's study[118] of workplace bullying found that 31% of women and 21% of men who reported workplace bullying exhibited three key symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (hypervigilance, intrusive imagery, and avoidance behaviours). A 1998 study of male college students (n = 70) by Simonelli & Ingram[119] found that men who were emotionally abused by their female partners exhibited higher rates of chronic depression than the general population. A study of college students (n = 80) by Goldsmith and Freyd[120] report that many who have experienced emotional abuse do not characterise the mistreatment as abusive. Additionally, Goldsmith and Freyd show that these people also tend to exhibit higher than average rates of alexithymia (difficulty identifying and processing their own emotions). Jacobson et al.[121] found that women report markedly higher rates of fear during marital conflicts. However, a rejoinder[122] argued that Jacobson's results were invalid due to men and women's drastically differing interpretations of questionnaires. Coker et al.[123] found that the effects of mental abuse were similar whether the victim was male or female. Pimlott-Kubiak and Cortina[124] found that severity and duration of abuse were the only accurate predictors of aftereffects of abuse; sex of perpetrator or victim were not reliable predictors. Analysis of a large survey (n = 25,876) by LaRoche[125] found that women abused by men were slightly more likely to seek psychological help than were men abused by women (63% vs. 62%). In a 2007 study, Laurent, et al.,[126] report that psychological aggression in young couples (n = 47) is associated with decreased satisfaction for both partners: "psychological aggression may serve as an impediment to couples development because it reflects less mature coercive tactics and an inability to balance self/other needs effectively." A 2008 study by Walsh and Shulman[127] reports that psychological aggression by females is more likely to be associated with relationship dissatisfaction for both partners, while withdrawal by men is more likely to be associated with relationship dissatisfaction for both partners.” --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support
A Japanese company has found a way to turn unwanted rice into plastic goods. One company is working with farmers in the coastal town of Namie. Nearby is the Fukushima nuclear center, closed since a nuclear disaster there in March 2011. Jinichi Abe is a local rice farmer. He says people do not want to buy his rice because they worry it is radioactive. The farmer has been trying for years to recover from the economic effects of the disaster. Now, he has a new way to sell his rice. Tokyo-based company Biomass Resin opened a factory in Namie in November. It turns locally grown rice into pellets for use in manufacturing. The pellets can be formed into all kinds of products, including plastic tools, food containers, shopping bags and souvenirs. Without growing rice, this town can't recover," the 85-year-old Abe told Reuters news agency. He said that in the years since the disaster, he has tried selling rice as animal feed, among other things. “Even now, we can't sell it as Fukushima rice,” Abe said. "So having Biomass come was a huge help. We can grow rice without worries."“如果不种植水稻,这个小镇就无法恢复,”85 岁的安倍告诉路透社。 Officials ordered people in the area to flee when the nuclear factory's reactors exploded and released radiation. The government permitted some people to return to their lives in Namie in 2017 after a major cleanup of the area. About 80 percent of the town's land remains off-limits and currently about 2,000 people live there. About 21,000 people lived in Namie before the accident. Town official Satoshi Konno admits things are still difficult for people in the area. “We want businesses that will create as many jobs as possible - basically, manufacturing," he said. Since 2017, eight companies have come back. These include a concrete manufacturing center and an electric vehicle battery recycler. Those companies created about 200 jobs. The town is under discussions with still more companies and research centers that might bring in more people.2017年以来,已有8家企业回归。 Takemitsu Imazu is president of Biomass Resin Fukushima. He told Reuters that even though the area has mostly recovered, the economy is still severely suffering. "By building our factory here, we want to bring jobs and invite people back."Takemitsu Imazu 是 Biomass Resin Fukushima 的总裁。 Imazu says the plastic products created from rice are not biodegradable, meaning they cannot be broken down into other material through natural processes. However, combining rice and plastic cuts down on the amount of carbon needed during production, he added. The company also says growing more rice in Namie reduces overall levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide. In addition, nuclear experts say rice naturally takes in little radioactive material. Biomass Resin now employs 10 people in Namie, including a 20-year-old who returned, and the company hopes to expand. It uses only about 50 tonnes of Namie rice. The rest of the 1,500 tonnes needed is mainly from elsewhere in Fukushima. But the company says it will buy a larger amount from Abe and his cooperative next year, grown on the freshly cleared fields.

In this episode, Mary Conquest speaks with Dr Gary Namie, a social psychologist widely regarded as North America's foremost authority on workplace bullying. Along with his wife, he's the founder of the Workplace Bullying Institute, and they've also co-authored multiple books and academic articles addressing this issue.Gary begins this powerful interview with a very impactful definition of workplace bullying. He explains why this “disgraceful and embarrassing human condition” exists and, perhaps more alarmingly, describes how institutions actually allow it to perpetuate.Dr Namie feels very strongly that HR has failed to address bullying, so issues a rallying call to safety professionals to use their hazard identification expertise to end the prevalence of workplace bullying. He's encouraged by OHS professionals' adoption of psychosocial safety management and believes that post #metoo media attention on toxic workplace environments will help raise the profile of bullying prevention.Gary passionately discusses both the individual and organizational negative consequences of workplace bullying and gives safety professionals practical guidance on how they can help solve this issue. Despite sharing some optimism about the future, he leaves us with no doubt about the severity of this problem. To contact Dr Gary Namie or learn more about his mission to eradicate workplace bullying, visit:Home - Workplace Bullying InstituteSafety Labs is created by Slice, the only safety knife on the market with a finger-friendly® blade.
