I wrote this poem after the demolition of Denny's factory nearly two years ago close to where I grow up. The factory had been there for many years and had provided employment for many local people including myself when I briefly worked there part time while at school. The factory acted as a de-facto peace wall in a divided town. Its large industrial footprint physically separating two disparate and often desperate communities. A no-mans land where both sides of the community could go to work together but comfortably stay away from each other after. The demolition of the site has also created a gap and many new vistas emerged offering new perspectives on a changing town.

Francie McGroryDelicate fog gently grazes the landscape. Dreamlike and dancing. The flushed lilac sky impressively contrasts the Dromara Hills, like a shanty town in South America. An old lady trots down Drumnasoo. Just a slip of a woman, vanishing in seconds. I try to recall her appearance but it was too opaque. Was she really crying? I am not so sure. I think she was flogging her free-range eggs with the mellow yellow yolks. Back into town at the roundabout, I can see Francie McGrory. He is always chopping grass, tearing away at the shears. I hope he has time to nourish himself. That roundabout has the fastest growing grass in the country. He never leaves there, and always standing on the periphery. Strange man. It is getting dark. The abrasive, winding aroma of burning coal is stinging my lungs. It looks like a Victorian postcard scene. All you need is a dozen top hats and oil lamps and hey presto! I should not be thinking like this. There is not a sinner around and I am sure that streetlight was shivering. I drive swiftly down the loaning. The main thoroughfare to the big castle. I never understood why they called the big castle. It looks more like a bridge to me. They say an ancient Irish king lived there thousands of years ago. He must have fallen badly out of favour. Before I arrive, I battle through a Waltzer of lights. My head is ponderous with the pulsing noises. I brake harshly, letting a court jester cross the road. He is freaking me out, the scallywag. I reckon he brought the king down. Encircling, I head back up the lane. Everything is sedate like a Saturday afternoon on a council estate. I need to check if Francie is still working. I drive upwards. He is still there. I park the car on a heavily weeded layby and walk to the roundabout. As I approach benignly, miraculously, he is gone, not a trace. Thank goodness. That man needs his sleep badly. Come to think of it, so do I!Patrick James McCurdie 2021

The smell is pungent.A toxic beauty scraping the nasal canal.Footering in the tight jeans pocket, I retrieve a mint of Arctic freshness.A timely temperance.I return to the car for a chugging prayer, drowning out the incoherent country drawls around me.The sinuses are clearing, like diminishing floodwater from a cavern.Perhaps the recession has been too quick though, my temples hurt, like tender splints. But I won't fooled by wrong awareness, it's not the diesel or polo mints.

FLOATERS AND FOGA dewy mist settles on the glass-stained water. The mystical canvas creates a peculiar sense of serenity. Wildlife appears invisible, perhaps waiting for the mid-morning sun to dissipate the vapour. It feels like the calm before a phantom storm, as a pair of ducks pop up. The conjoined black outline glides aimlessly, before dropping off the face of the Earth. The mist is clearing, visibly confirmed by a flock of terns racing by. Little fissures continue to splinter the low-level cloud assisted by a leaping roach. The sun has got stronger, framing the scene as a translucent image. A brisk walk along the towpath conjures up drumlins of clouds, scattered with hints of hopeful blueness. Near the end of the pleasant part of the towpath, a car crosses an old, stone bridge. Timeless and secure, the bridge only revealed by the harsh, radiating lights that streak skywards. Finally, the mist lifts, exposing a grey-turquoise body, the outline all but vanished. Near the edge of the riverbank, a clan of tadpoles swivel around in a circular motion. Joyous as the warm rays graze their gills. The sunlight has spawned patches of light brown cloudy water barely viewable to the naked eye. You would really have to look for it or be hyper-aware of these things. Sometimes ignorance is bliss, just don't stare directly at the sun!

I believe I can learn a lot.I see him rambling towards his humble abode; another day in Paradise gone! Canary WharfImmense structures towering high yet gentle and reassuring, their retro look disguises an urban beast. Looking from Greenwich, they seem so close but distant.A partition in place, a separation of industry and the natural world. I look almost fearfully from my calm green vista wondering what chaos ensues there, relieved it's a Sunday. Cool and vibrant, it smacks of the modern world, and has an originality unbridled.I peer through a birch tree to catch another glance, what a majestic sight!             CAMBERWELL GREENCamberwell Green, where urban meets suburban, frantic crossroads and compromised air makes you crave a fresher feel. Homes old and new, some dilapidated and some proud,But each with a story to tell; I catch a tower block out of the corner of my eye,a menacing powerful structure, and a reminder that we can't all live in a sprawling green heaven. The shops bustle and the crowded pavements provoke irritation. There's people from all over the world, a reminder of community or a lack of it. The grinding noise of frequent London buses and the impersonal, callous looks as I march through the streetssets this place out as something different, but only on the veneer. I dander a few more yards past the hospital where the screech of trains greets me.Functional and gritty, they stride along the tracks laboured and uneventful.I continue to proceed, and after a lung awakening climb up a curious hill,I realise I'm nearly home!

The head of a solitary deer penetrates an eroded hedgerow as an unusual precise square of water appears. A burly cyclist transcends an antiquated stone bridge, crossing at the very moment the drumlin resurfaces. A large rock looks brutally exposed in the sea swash. Three ships in a near military formation glaringly look at an erect lighthouse. A gravelly black quarry scars the landscape fittingly. McCann is working at the old power station, I wonder if he is there today?I don't envy him, what a hideous structure! The horizon is looming quickly as a field of cabbages briefly intercepts. A deep valley peppered by foreign trees disappears as does the horizon. A swallow soars high but evaporates in the glistening bluey-white sky. Guarded rock faces form a formidable barrier. Dunbar is working down at the harbour, if any man knows where the horizon has gone, it is him.  With his flat cap, arched back and hand welded cigarette, he points to a small stream, his back creaking menacingly. I think he might be leading me up the garden path. I keep looking and can see the horizon once again, a partition so defined and robust. There's a mechanical sound, it must be those turbines, I thought they only dwelled on land. I shift a few yards and sit against a mature silver birch tree. Ogling the horizon, I feel still and lonely but somehow connected. I look back down towards the harbour, Dunbar has gone. Maybe for a few pints at the Bann Eel. I think I'll join him for a sup of the black stuff. That creamy taste is so magical, it's like an awakening. Much more tangible than the horizon, but I won't be fooled by either.
