Gloria opens the show with an inspiring quote from Abigail Adams, which echoes the sentiment that women are just as strong, intelligent and capable of getting the job done. Gloria speaks to the work that Stephanie Sonnabend and Malli Gero have done launching a national campaign aimed at increasing the percentage of women on company boards to twenty percent or greater by 2020. They succeeded in that goal but the work doesn’t stop there! Gloria addressed the benefits that companies experience when they elevate women to their boards as well as legislation that is currently being lobbied to require organizations to promote more women to these leadership seats. Why Women Should Take Impossible Jobs

“Only she who attempts the absurd achieves the impossible.” – Robin Morgan Gloria opens the podcast by discussing an article she recently read claiming that the next CEO of Wells Fargo would be a female human shield. The article argues that it would be a step backwards for women because this role is ‘unprecedentedly terrible’ and the new CEO would have to navigate difficult situations such as prior scandals, plummeting assets, legal issues, and regulatory and political pressures. However, Gloria argues that women should seize the opportunity to take on impossible jobs just like this one because it’s precisely within the chaos that companies are open to new ideas and a leader can move effectively to implement her own changes. In this episode, Gloria highlights the importance of shifting the current ideology of ‘power over’ to ‘power to.’ She argues that power is an infinite resource, especially when it comes to innovation, imagination, and ingenuity. Gloria speaks to her own experience taking on an impossible job and the exhilaration she felt when she accomplished her goals. Finally, Gloria provides three specific reasons why women should continue to push their own limits and take on roles that many have deemed impossible. This Take The Lead Women podcast is brought to you by Michael Stars, my favorite go-to site for stylish casual wear. 5 Powerful Lessons for Changemakers from Diahann Carroll’s Life

“A movement has to move.” – Gloria Feldt Gloria distinctly remembers when Diahann Carroll broke through a major television barrier by starring in the hit sitcom, Julia. Diahann was a black actress starring in a hit television show during the height of the Civil Rights Movement in 1968, a task that required courage, tenacity, and aplomb. In the midst of cultural unrest, Carroll was the first African-American woman to have the starring role in her own television show. Gloria argues that this was as momentous a step forward for racial equality as Rosa Parks’ refusal to go to the back of the bus, because media images are so powerful in creating social change and challenging the status quo. In this episode, Gloria lists and breaks down the five powerful lessons for change-makers from Diahann Carroll’s life. These include being intentional about your steps forward, using controversy and compromise strategically, and never underestimating your impact, among others. Finally, Gloria speaks to her own involvement with the Civil Rights Movement, her hunger for social change, and the inspiration to continue advocating for righteous cases like women’s rights. This podcast is brought to you by Michael Stars clothing company where you can get thecomfiest, softest t-shirts and stylish casual wear. “My grandmother started walking five miles a day when she was sixty. In her experience, Gloria has observed that women of a certain age tend to feel invisible in the workplace and struggle to be heard and remain relevant. She argues that age diversity is just as important to an organization’s growth and bottom line as gender, ethnic, and racial diversity. Aged employees bring a certain amount of maturity, experience and skill that younger employees may lack. Gloria cites designer Vera Wang, chef Julia Child, and author Laura Ingalls-Wilder, among others, as examples of successful women who started their famous careers later in life. She shares why many companies say they value diversity, though they execute on it with greater or lesser success, depending on several factors. As a culture, if we see diversity as a plus, it is a plus. If we see it as a divide, it will divide us, with potentially disastrous consequences.
