From Washington, D.C. to the Brooklyn waterfront, Lindsay Green shares how a career in finance evolved into a mission to transform industrial spaces into engines of opportunity for underserved communities.Lindsay Green is the President and CEO of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, where she leads one of New York City's most ambitious models for inclusive economic development. With more than 550 businesses and 11,000 employees on site, the Navy Yard is not simply a real estate portfolio but a living ecosystem designed to create quality jobs and connect local residents to meaningful careers. Her work blends business strategy, workforce development, and community engagement into a powerful example of how cities can rethink the purpose of former industrial spaces. Her journey began in Washington, D.C., where daily exposure to economic disparities shaped her desire to work at the intersection of business and community impact. After studying economics at Harvard and starting her career in investment banking at Goldman Sachs, she discovered urban development through the Urban Investment Group under Alicia Glen. Mentorship from leaders like Glen and MIT professor Phil Thompson helped her shift from traditional finance to mission driven economic development. A detour into the food industry after Yale School of Management eventually led her back to this work, culminating in her leadership at the Navy Yard in 2022.Lindsay explains how the Brooklyn Navy Yard goes beyond affordable real estate to support small, women owned, and minority owned businesses with mentorship, capital access, and technical advisory services. She highlights the Brooklyn STEAM Center, a public high school that gives 600 students hands on training with industry grade equipment, as well as new adult reskilling programs that recognize the value of both digital and analog problem solving. Through initiatives like the Micro Business Accelerator Program, she is building pathways for entrepreneurs to start small, grow, and scale within a supportive ecosystem. This conversation explores leadership, economic mobility, and the importance of early exposure to career possibilities. Lindsay's work demonstrates that revitalizing industrial spaces can do more than preserve history. It can create futures. Tune in to hear how thoughtful economic development can reshape communities and expand opportunity for the next generation.Chapters:00:00
We tend to live our lives in a dizzying rush, leaping from one task to the next without stopping to slow down and focus on or enjoy what's in front of us. This rapid lifestyle is typical in America, but it's not what God intended for us. Alan Fadling is the president and founder of Unhurried Living and the author of An Unhurried Leader - The Lasting Fruit of Daily Influence. He highlights the unhurried and unflustered ministry of Jesus Christ during His time on Earth. Jesus was never in a hurry. He always stopped to have conversations with those He met along the way. Jesus waited patiently for the Father to reveal His will and to open doors of opportunity in His time. We must wait on God and develop a sense of unhurried patience in life. “Don't rush ahead of God,” says Alan. Focus on what's important: the people around you and your precious relationships.TAKEAWAYSUnhurried leadership is more fruitful and more meaningful than hurried leadershipFruitfulness includes investing in the people that God placed around you and connecting with themWe can have a life of influence without positions of responsibilityJesus exhibited a pace of prayer - unhurried and uninhibited by an impulse to rush and none of the fruits of the spirit work in a hurry
Fear isn't the enemy of great leadership. Ignoring it is. How often do you walk into a meeting already bracing for impact? Or catch yourself shrinking back in a moment where you meant to lead with clarity? Sarah Lockwood sits down with Beck Sydow, the founder of HumanKind Business Leaders, and Marina Suholutsky, the founder of PurposeBuilt, for a conversation on emotional self-regulation, fear in business, and the kind of inner work that makes better leadership possible. They explore how fear lives in the body, how it shows up in the boardroom, and why most founders are still operating from old survival patterns without realizing it. You'll hear why simply pushing through isn't a strategy and how learning to notice your internal state (tight shoulders, shallow breath, reactive thinking) can open the door to more aligned decisions. Beck and Marina walk through tools for getting out of autopilot, including body scans, self-inquiry, and what they call “active choice,” the skill of pausing just long enough to shift out of fear and back into presence. This doesn't just explain why inner work matters. It shows you how to begin. Whether you're leading a team, building a company, or trying to show up more fully for your own vision, this is the kind of episode that gets under the surface and invites you to lead from a deeper, steadier place. What if the mark of extraordinary leadership isn't found in having all the answers, but in asking the right questions? This eye-opening episode distills powerful insights from recent conversations with leadership experts Gary Cohen, Scott Burgmeyer, and Joe Davis—revealing a leadership framework built on curiosity, development, and generosity.Gary Cohen's journey from founding a company to growing it to 2,200 employees taught him a crucial lesson: leaders who constantly provide answers become organizational bottlenecks. The pivotal shift happens when leaders move from information-gathering to asking questions that empower others to think, act, and own solutions. This simple change transforms you from an answer-giver to a true multiplier, unleashing potential throughout your organization while satisfying people's fundamental needs for autonomy and recognition.Scott Burgmeyer adds another dimension by emphasizing that leadership isn't just about leading today's business—it's about consciously building tomorrow's leaders. His powerful personal journey reminds us that often we can't "read the label from inside the jar"—sometimes others see leadership potential in us before we recognize it ourselves. The true measure of leadership becomes not just what you accomplish, but who you develop along the way.Joe Davis completes this leadership trifecta with his concept of "generous leadership"—bringing vulnerability, authenticity, and genuine presence to your role. This approach isn't weakness; it's creating the psychological safety needed for teams to acknowledge mistakes, seek help, and collaborate effectively. Perhaps the most valuable gift? Your undivided attention—increasingly rare in our distracted world, yet precisely what makes people feel truly seen and valued. These insights are further enriched by glimpses into our new Psychology and Leadership series, exploring how understanding the brain's functioning transforms leadership effectiveness. From the astonishing case of Phineas Gage to recognizing how our unconscious patterns influence decisions, these psychological insights help us lead with greater intention and empathy.Ready to transform your leadership apSend us a textSupport the show✅ Follow The Leadership Project on your favourite podcast platform and listen to a new episode every week!

How do you know if you are a good boss? Whether you're in the C-Suite or middle management, you're probably not reaching your full potential, according to Sabina Nawaz, Fortune 500 coach and author of You're the Boss: Become the Manager You Want to Be (and Others Need). Unfortunately, it's often hard to recognize pitfalls as a boss or know how to address them. Luckily, Nawaz has some ideas. Pulling from over one thousand interviews at Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Motorola, Nordstrom, and the United Nations, Nawaz offers managers advice on how to succeed. Her proprietary data includes over two decades of coaching and in-depth research into the psychology of behavior and relationships. One key finding, she says, is that as our job expands, the added pressure to perform corrupts our actions, and our increased power blinds us to the impact of those actions. No one is immune to this. Even the most well-intentioned manager can quickly become the boss nobody wants to work for. Nawaz offers an in-depth framework for managing pressure and power with grace and intelligence. Knowing if you're a good boss doesn't need to be a mystery. To be a good one, Nawaz says, is to manage yourself and others, navigate working relationships, and communicate effectively. You'll know you're a good boss when you're doing these things, while also experiencing less stress and greater impact, becoming the boss everyone wants to work for. Sabina Nawaz is an elite executive coach who advises C-level executives and teams at Fortune 500 corporations, government agencies, nonprofits, and academic institutions around the world. Sabina gives dozens of keynotes, seminars, and conferences each year and teaches faculty at Northeastern and Drexel University. During her fourteen-year tenure at Microsoft, she went from managing software development teams to leading the company's executive development and succession planning efforts for over 11,000 managers and nearly a thousand executives, advising Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer directly. She has written for and been featured in Harvard Business Review, The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Inc., Fast Company, NBC, Nasdaq, and MarketWatch. Frank X. Shaw is the Chief Communications Officer at Microsoft, leading global communications strategy, storytelling, media relations, executive and employee communications, and more. With over 25 years of experience, he served as president of the Microsoft account at Waggener Edstrom Worldwide and has worked across government, entertainment, food, and retail sectors. A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, he holds a journalism degree from the University of Oregon and serves on the boards of the Seattle YMCA and The LAGRANT Foundation.
