Julia Keel from Fullkeel Farm is a small cut flower farmer in north central Florida. She sells exclusively to florists and focuses on event floristry. Due to the hot climate in Florida, Julia pauses production during the summer months when demand decreases and stem quality becomes inconsistent. She has found ways to improve stem quality by adjusting timing, nutrition, and cultivar selection. Julia makes data-driven decisions on which crops to grow based on revenue per square foot. She stopped growing ranunculus due to high production costs and extreme temperature fluctuations. Julia emphasizes the importance of knowing your numbers and making decisions based on profitability. Julia Keel discusses the major points of failure in her flower farm and how she addressed them to improve efficiency. She realized that overextending herself and not having the right infrastructure and tools were causing failures. She invested in automating irrigation in the prop house, using the paper pot system for transplanting, and purchasing a fertilizer and lime spreader. These changes have made her life easier and improved seedling quality and planting efficiency.
