The first pregnancy was riddled with misinformation and coercion, and for the second we wanted to be even more prepared. There is not a wealth of information available on how the birth partner can be of help, so I wanted to share my experience of the two pregnancies, what I learned, what are some red flags, and how best to help your person carrying your baby."

Catch up on my Instagram live with @hazelkeedle and @drfeeleyrm talking about the U.K. birth trauma enquiry. On 9 January 2024, the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on birth trauma in the UK Parliament will set up an inquiry to investigate the reasons for traumatic birth and to develop policy recommendations to reduce the rate of birth trauma. Research shows that about 4-5% of women develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after giving birth – equivalent to approximately 25,000-30,000 women every year in the UK. Studies have also found that a much larger number of women – as many as one in three – find some aspects of their birth experience traumatic. Birth Trauma affects 30,000 women across the country every year. 53% of women who experienced birth trauma are less likely to have children in the future and 84% of women who experienced tears during birth, did not receive enough information about birth injuries ahead of time.   The cross-party inquiry is led by Theo Clarke MP and Rosie Duffield MP and aims to find out more about the experiences of women who have been affected by traumatic birth. The inquiry is currently gathering written and oral evidence to inform the policy report which will include practical policy recommendations for the UK Government and will be published in Spring 2024.  Seven sessions to hear evidence will run on consecutive Mondays in Parliament between 5 February and 18 March 2024.  The inquiry is inviting written submissions both from parents and from professionals who work in maternity. It is open to everyone in the UK, and we particularly welcome submissions from people from marginalised communities such as those who are racially minoritised, LGBT, economically disadvantaged, homeless, asylum seeking or displaced, care experienced, neurodivergent or facing any other circumstances which means their voice is less likely to be heard.    The inquiry will report in April 2024. If you feel distressed as a result of sharing your story, either in writing or in person, please contact one of the organisations listed below:

Compassion fatigue is something which many healthcare professionals experience, particularly in caring professions such as midwifery. Running on a tank empty of compassion can lead to a lack of empathy towards those you care for, which can mean less than ideal care for pregnant people at best, causing trauma to them at worst. It also has impact on midwives' own mental health. I chat ti psychologist dr Jenna Brough about what compassion fatigue is, and how it affects both midwives and pregnant people and women. We discuss how to identify it, prevent it, and where to get support if you believe you are experiencing it. I hope this episode helps midwives, student midwives and anyone in a caring profession to seek support and show compassion to both those they care for, but also for themselves. So what do we do when we experience intense contractions with no cervical change, which may last days? Because that is what prodromal labour is! And it can be exhausting, and worrying, particularly if you're dismissed or told it's "just Braxton hicks". How does neurodivergence affect pregnancy and birth? I speak to doula Victoria White, who founded Neurodivergent Birth in February 2023. Victoria aims to increase understanding and awareness of neurodivergent perinatal experiences. Victoria's daughter was diagnosed as autistic in 2022, and Victoria has also recently been exploring her own neurodivergence. Following her daughter's diagnosis, she read everything she could get her hands on about neurodiversity, and she began to see how many aspects of pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period could be challenging and experienced differently by neurodivergent people. She launched an Instagram page and a podcast to facilitate the conversation. The response that this was a much-needed space within the birth world was overwhelmingly positive, and she began to have many wonderful and informative conversations with neurodivergent people, healthcare professionals and researchers via the podcast. This then led to the development of a competency workshop for birthworkers; ‘Supporting Neurodivergent Birth', which she co-facilitates with fellow doula and autistic advocate Sam Sheppard.  You can listen to the podcast on Spotify and Apple podcasts as well as other platforms! In this episode I chat to the Mamma Coach Sophie Burch about her journey navigating 3 births, birth trauma and depression, all of which led her to create her courses and books. We discuss the importance of setting time aside for your own mental wellbeing, and how modelling good coping methods and communication also affects our children's abilities to regulate their own emotions. Sophie is a Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapist with Mindfulness and Coaching specialising in Perinatal & Parental Mental Health with additional training in PTSD & Trauma.  She has worked as a Trainer in PMH Awareness alongside Perinatal Mental Health experts and campaigners Dr Jane Hanley and Mark Williams, she has founded Beyond Birth Mental Wellbeing Practitioner Training and she supports Make Birth Better and Pandas Perinatal Mental Health Charity.   After 17 years working in the birth and baby world - having experienced mental health issues herself as a mother to four children (including twins) and witnessing her partner struggle as well as hundreds of her clients - Sophie decided that she had to take action where it was not being taken by the NHS and supporting services. She believes we're missing a trick if we are not putting some preventative work into preparing for a baby on a mental level.  To this end she has written a book and parent support sessions: ‘Beyond Birth: Mindful Early Parenting' to bring emotional wellbeing and mental health awareness to all people starting from conception, for life.  Sophie has also created and recorded content for the Nourish App (which helps mums with their mental and physical wellbeing) and regularly Vlogs and interviews perinatal mental health and parenting experts on her Instagram accounts. What role does intuition have to play in the practice of obstetrics and midwifery? I chat to holistic OBGYN Nathan Riley about why he changed his approach to obstetrics, and why we have lost our way in maternity care. We discuss the intuition needed by any birth worker, whether that's a midwife, a doula, an obstetrician or the birthing person, and why our obstetric led approach is resulting in a climb in the numbers of women and birthing people feeling dissatisfied at best, traumatised at worst, by their experiences giving birth. You can find Nathan on Instagram @nathanrileyobgyn or go visit his website to find out more about the support he's providing both midwives and families internationally http://belovedholistics.com The Better Birth podcast is hosted by hypnobirthing and antenatal teacher Erin Fung. In this episode I listen to the wonderful Fran, who shares the birth story of her third baby. After two births on midwifery led units, Fran decided to birth at home for her third. She recounts how her birth started, and points out some key examples of the importance of surrendering to birth, listening to your body, and using all the instincts you have available to you to help your body birth your baby. I am so excited to share this story with you all. Congratulations Fran and thank you so much for sharing such a wonderful and positive story with people who really need to hear such beautiful examples of how birth can play out! In this episode I chat to midwife and researcher Dr Claire Feeley about her new book "Supporting Physiological Birth Choices in Midwifery Practice". We discuss the research that the book focuses on, and the challenges that midwives face in supporting autonomy and birthing out of guidelines. Claire talks about her initial research in to freebirth, and how led on to further research looking at supporting physiology. She identifies how organisational culture and policy, as well as our own individual biases and fears, have all played a part in creating an environment where supporting choice is seen as dangerous from both a birthing perspective as well as a professional one. We discuss how NHS trusts and individuals can instigate change in order to improve the experiences and outcomes for birthing women and people and their babies. This is a vital listening for anyone who works in maternity care, whether you're a midwife, student, or senior leader. You can purchase a copy of Claire's book, either for yourself or your institution at https://www.clairefeeley.com/books You can also follow Claire on instagram at https://www.instagram.com/drfeeleyrm/ The Better Birth podcast is hosted by hypnobirthing and antenatal teacher Erin Fung.
