Uncharted territory for Rob and Guy as they tackle their first sequel. There's also uncharted territory for The Inbetweeners in their second movie installment, as the boys head down under and encounter Peter Andre-Mobiles, slip-sliding turds, and sensitive rape alarms. Sounds a bit much, but is it? To discuss, the chaps are joined by content creator Gabi Thorogood, herself a massive Inbetweeners fan. Between them, our trio will navigate series 3 of the Channel 4 TV show, the infamous US remake, and of course, the 2014 feature-length movie. By 2014, was Inbetweeners fatigue a thing? If so, is it indeed still a thing ten years later? Of course there's the age-old question of how a sequel holds up against the first film. It's Lonely at the Centre of the Earth. Wilmington, Delaware's George Thorogood got his start on acoustic blues.  He formed a band called the Delaware Destroyers in 1973, and this would eventually become his band, known as George Thorogood & The Destroyers.  He released his first record in 1977, and received more mainstream notice when he opened for the Rolling Stones in 1981.  The same year his touring schedule included the “50/50 tour” where George Thorogood & the Destroyers toured all 50 states in 50 days.  Thorogood's high energy shows and relentless touring schedule would be a hallmark of the band, creating a dedicated audience worldwide. The 1980's saw a resurgence in interest in blues rock, and this was a benefit for George Thorrogood.  The band would see continued success from their commercial breakthrough album, “Bad to the Bone,” released in 1982.  Albums would consist of both original material and covers of classic blues songs.  Much of their material has a humorous angle, though the blues style is solid and unapologetic, drawing influence from such artists as Elmore James, John Lee Hooker, and Bo Diddley. The George Thorogood Collection showcases some of the biggest hits from the band throughout the 70's and 80's.  It was released in March 1989, and we will be covering several hits from this album today.Wayne takes us through this blues boogie greatest hits album for this week's podcast. I Drink AloneOne of the better known George Thorogood hits, this pun-laden song peaked at number 13 on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks, and was an original from Thorogood.  “Now every morning just before breakfast, I don't want no coffee or tea.  Just me and by good buddy Weiser - that's all I ever need.”Bad to the BoneThis is the signature song of George Thorogood and the Destroyers.  Despite failing to crack the Top 100 in the US, it is universally identifiable from commercials, TV shows, movies, and the song itself.  It has been in over 25 films, including the iconic biker scene from “Terminator 2.”Move It On OverWhile this song does not appear on the “Collection,” we had to include it in this look at the band.  It is a cover song originally written and recorded by Hank Williams in 1947, and depicts the struggles of a guy who has come home late and found himself - literally - in the doghouse.Gear JammerThe deeper cut originally came out in 1985, and has become an anthem of truckers everywhere.  It talks about rolling down the road in an 18-wheeler, and looking to make time so the trucker can get home to his baby.  You'll find yourself moving at a high speed if you play this song in your car! ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Bad Boys by Inner Circle (from the television series “COPS”)This reality-based show premiered in 1989, and had an iconic song with a reggae riff. STAFF PICKS:You're What You Want to Be by Cruel Story of YouthRob launches the staff picks with a deep cut from a lost band.  This Wisconsin foursome produced their only album (self-titled) in 1989).  The song itself is a good one in the alternative music genre, though it seems overproduced to us.  Girl You Know Its True by Milli VanilliBruce risks cancellation from the show for putting this decidedly non-rock travesty on the picks.  Milli Vanilli released the album of the same name, which got them both commercial success and critical recognition via a Grammy award in 1989 despite not singing a note on the album.  No musical survey of 1989 would be complete without acknowledging the Milli Vanilli controversy.Eternal Flame by The BanglesLynch brings us a ballad from Susanna Hoffs from the girl group The Bangles.  They started their career singing 60's rock songs, then incorporated some 70's punk before hitting it big with their own material.  It topped the charts in 9 different countries.  You Got It by Roy OrbisonWayne closes out the staff picks  with a hit posthumously released from Roy Orbison's album "Mystery Girl." It went to number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Fellow Traveling Wilburys alumni Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne co-wrote the song with Orbison, and they play on the single along with an uncredited George Harrison. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Ytse Jam by Dream TheaterWe close out with a prog rock instrumental from Dream Theater's debut album. Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. The facility includes a 5,492-seat arena, a large theater, and a large ballroom.[2] The building is #27 on the list of Oakland Historic Landmarks.,[3] and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2021.[4]The building is located at 10 10th Street, in the Civic Center district of the city. It is next to the Oakland Museum, Laney College, Lake Merritt, and near the Lake MerrittBARTstation.he Beaux-Arts style landmark was built in 1914; the architect was John J. Donovan.[3] The structural engineer was Maurice Couchot.[5] Originally known as the Oakland Civic Auditorium, it was renamed in honor of Henry J. Kaiser after a 1984 renovation. The city closed the facility in 2006 and its future was uncertain for a decade.[1] In 2006, Oakland voters defeated a ballot proposition advocating a library space in the building. The facility was owned by the City of Oakland until 2011, when it was sold to the local redevelopment agency for $28 million.[6] However, the redevelopment agency was dissolved by the State of California in 2012,[7] so ownership reverted to the city of Oakland. In 2015 the city chose a local developer, Orton Development, Inc. to renovate the facility. The plans are to turn it into a commercial space, with the Calvin Simmons Theater being renovated as a performing arts venue. The building is also supposed to be registered as a national historic landmark. In the 1950s and 1960s the Roller Derby played there hundreds of times. Elvis Presley performed at the convention center on June 3, 1956, and again on October 27, 1957. On December 28, 1962, Martin Luther King Jr. spoke to an audience of 7,000 at the auditorium to mark the 100th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation.[13]Ike & Tina Turner performed at the Oakland Auditorium on January 13, 1967.From 1967 through 1989, the Grateful Dead, an American rock band, performed at the convention center 57 times. Their first 23 concerts at the convention center were billed at "Oakland Auditorium", and later, starting in 1985, the venue changed to "Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center". The other first in the show was "Day Tripper." I was there! It sounded like a hit to me. But then, I was completely disconnected from whatever it was that passed for hit-making in the 1980s.It was performed fairly regularly throughout 1985 through September 1987, making its last appearance on September 23 at The Spectrum in Philadelphia. That seems odd to me, because it was dropped from rotation just a little more than two months after it was released on In the Dark, in July. Any thoughts? So, it's a song about a train. One of the prime motifs in Grateful Dead lyrics. Quick—name five Grateful Dead songs with trains! No peeking! What do trains evoke in Dead lyrics? (and take a look at the back cover of Reflections sometime).                           Played 29 times                           First played December 28, 1984 S.F. Civic Auditorium (NYE run)                           Last played September 23, 1987 at the Spectrum, Philly  SHOW No. 2:    Cassidy                           Track #6                           2:20 – 4:09 "Cassidy" is a song written by John Barlow and Bob Weir[1] and performed by the Grateful Dead, Ratdog, and Phil Lesh & Friends.[2] The song appeared on Bob Weir's Ace, and the Grateful Dead's Reckoning and Without a Net albums.[3]The song was named after Cassidy Law, who was born in 1970 and was the daughter of Grateful Dead crew member Rex Jackson and Weir's former housemate Eileen Law.[1] The lyrics also allude to Neal Cassady, who was associated with the Beats in the 1950s[4] and the Acid Test scene that spawned the Grateful Dead in the 1960s. Some of the lyrics in the song were also inspired by the death of Barlow's father.[5]The song was quoted in the admiring and admirable obituary of Barlow in The Economist. One of my favorite songs, a great sing a long.I really like this version because it gets nice and trippy.  Always good for a helping define the mood of the show, usually about mid to late first set.  A very fun tune.                           Played 339 times                           1st:  March 23, 1974 at the Cow Palace in Daley City, just outside S.F.                           Last:  July 6, 1995 Riverport Amphitheatre, Maryland Heights, MO outside of St. Louis   SHOW No. 3:    Willie and the Hand Jive                           Track # 14                           1:23 – 3;05 Played with the Neville Bros. but without Phil who left the stage for this one song. Willie and the Hand Jive" is a song written by Johnny Otis and originally released as a single in 1958 by Otis, reaching #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and #5 on the Billboard R&B chart.[1][2] The song has a Bo Diddley beat and was partly inspired by the music sung by a chain gang Otis heard while he was touring. The lyrics are about a man who became famous for doing a dance with his hands, but the song has been accused of glorifying masturbation,[2]though Otis always denied it.[3] It has since been covered by numerous artists, including The Crickets, The Strangeloves, Eric Clapton, Cliff Richard, Kim Carnes, George Thorogood, The Bunch, and in live performances by The Grateful Dead.[4][5] Clapton's 1974 version was released as a single and reached the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 26. Thorogood's 1985 version reached No. 25 on the BillboardRock Tracks chart. The lyrics tell of a man named Willie who became famous for doing a hand jive dance.[1][2] In a sense, the story is similar to that of Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode", which tells of someone who became famous for playing the guitar and was released two months before "Willie and the Hand Jive".[1] The origin of the song came when one of Otis' managers, Hal Ziegler, found out that rock'n'roll concert venues in England did not permit the teenagers to stand up and dance in the aisles, so they instead danced with their hands while remaining in their seats.[2][5] At Otis' concerts, performers would demonstrate Willie's "hand jive" dance to the audience, so the audience could dance along.[2] The dance consisted of clapping two fists together one on top of the other, followed by rolling the arms around each other.[2] Otis' label, Capitol Records, also provided diagrams showing how to do the hand jive dance. Eric Clapton recorded "Willie and the Hand Jive" for his 1974 album 461 Ocean Boulevard. Clapton slowed down the tempo for his version.[12] Author Chris Welch believes that the song benefits from this "slow burn".[12]Billboard described it as a "monster powerful cut" that retains elements from Clapton's previous single "I Shot the Sheriff."[13]Record World said that "Clapton slowly boogies [the song] into laid-back magnificence. George Thorogood recorded a version of "Willie and the Hand Jive" for his 1985 album with the Destroyers Maverick.[27] His single version charted on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, peaking at #25, and reached #63 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.[1][28]Allmusic critic James Christopher Monger called the song one of Thorogood's "high points. Other artists who covered the song include: Johnny Rivers, New Riders of the Purple Sage, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Sandy Nelson, The Tremeloes, Amos Garrett, Ducks Deluxe and Levon Helm.[4]Lee Michaels released a version of the song on his 1971 album, 5th                            To my surprise, played 6 times by the band, all in '86 and once in ‘87                           This is the fist time they ever played it                           Last:  April 4, 1987 at the Centrum in Worcester, MA                SHOW No. 4:   In the Midnight Hour                           Track # 16                           2:20 – 4:01                            Played with the Nevilles, Phil back on stage                           Again, Jerry's playing really stands out.  "In the Midnight Hour" is a song originally performed by Wilson Pickett in 1965 and released on his 1965 album of the same name, also appearing on the 1966 album The Exciting Wilson Pickett. The song was composed by Pickett and Steve Cropper at the historic Lorraine Motel in Memphis, later (April 1968) the site of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. Pickett's first hit on Atlantic Records,[1] it reached number one on the R&B charts and peaked at number 21 on the pop charts. Wilson Pickett recorded "In the Midnight Hour" at Stax Studios, Memphis, May 12, 1965. The song's co-writer Steve Cropper recalls: "[Atlantic Records president] Jerry Wexler said he was going to bring down this great singer Wilson Pickett" to record at Stax Studio where Cropper was a session guitarist" and I didn't know what groups he'd been in or whatever. But I used to work in [a] record shop, and I found some gospel songs that Wilson Pickett had sung on. On a couple [at] the end, he goes: 'I'll see my Jesus in the midnight hour! Oh, in the midnight hour. I'll see my Jesus in the midnight hour.'" and Cropper got the idea of using the phrase "in the midnight hour" as the basis for an R&B song.[3] More likely, Cropper was remembering The Falcons' 1962 song "I Found a Love," on which Pickett sings lead and says "And sometimes I call in the midnight hour!" The only gospel record Pickett had appeared on before this was the Violinaires' "Sign of the Judgement," which includes no such phrase.[4]Besides Cropper, the band on "In the Midnight Hour" featured Stax session regulars Al Jackson (drums) and Donald "Duck" Dunn (bass). According to Cropper, "Wexler was responsible for the track's innovative delayed backbeat", as Cropper revamped his planned groove for "In the Midnight Hour" based on a dance step called the Jerk, which Wexler demonstrated in the studio. According to Cropper, "this was the way the kids were dancing; they were putting the accent on two. Basically, we'd been one-beat-accenters with an afterbeat; it was like 'boom dah,' but here was a thing that went 'um-chaw,' just the reverse as far as the accent goes."[5]Pickett re-recorded the song for his 1987 album American Soul Man."In the Midnight Hour" t has become an iconic R&B track,[citation needed] placing at number 134 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time,[citation needed] Wilson Pickett's first of two entries on the list (the other being "Mustang Sally" at number 434).[citation needed] It is also one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll,[citation needed] Pickett's only such entry. In 2017, the song was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or artistically significant."[7] In 1999, "In the Midnight Hour" recorded in 1965 on Atlantic Records by Wilson Pickett was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Covers:·        The Grateful Dead regularly performed the song in concert from 1967 onwards, most notably with extended improv vocals by frontman Ron "Pigpen" McKernan.  It was occasionally the Dead's “midnight song” at their NYE shows – I saw them do it in 1985 at midnight on the 31st. Fun way to start the new year although I was always partial to Sugar Mag at NYE midnight.                            57 times played                           1st: December 10, 1965 at the Fillmore in S. Is a murder mystery just a verbose cryptic crossword? Fans of Caroline Crampton's excellent ‘Shedunnit' podcast, might remember her episode on the topic from 2021. It turned me towards Robort Thorogood's ‘The Marlow Murder Club', published just a few months earlier. The novel follows crossword enthusiast Judith, and her quest for clues and friendship following a murder she witnesses whilst out on a swim. We didn't end up fitting it into our 2021 run, so when the sequel launched this year, I knew we had to revisit the cruciverbalist.

Texas Scratch is made up of three born-and-bred Texas guitarists – Jim Suhler from Dallas, Buddy Whittington from Fort Worth and Vince Converse from Houston.  This mighty threesome of big dog guitar slingers takes no prisoners when it comes to red-hot guitar performances, both live and in-studio.This trio of six-string guitar beasts are accompanied on the album by drummer Jeff Simon and bassist Nathaniel Peterson, both fine musicians in their own right. The band's name derives from the term Texas scratch, which is a style of guitar picking (also known as the Carter Scratch) said to have originated by Mother Maybelle Carter back in 1927.Their combined efforts have resulted in a debut album consisting of – obviously -  fiery, passionate guitar licks everywhere you turn, soaked in the blues and kicked in the ass by the blues-rock they all love to play. Some of the song titles on the album alone lets the listener know what they are in for – What the Devil Loves, Trip Hammer, Showdown and Louisiana Cock Fight – give a few clues as to what to expect musically. But the album is far from just a six-string shootout or shredding contest between top gun guitarists; the nine total songs on the album feature seven original songs written by a combination of Suhler, Whittington and Converse with killer arrangements, passionate vocals, tight ensemble playing, and clever lyrics.  One can hear the mutual sense of love and joy for the music in the band's playing and singing together. But, given the level of talent in this band, none of the musical goodness that flows from this album should come as any surprise.Suhler's and Simon's day jobs are longtime members of George Thorogood and the Destroyers…in fact, Simon is an original member of The Destroyers (he co-founded the band with Thorogood in 1973) and Suhler has been a Destroyer since 1999. Suhler is also a founding member of the band Monkey Beat since 1991.Whittington recorded and toured with blues legend John Mayall for 15 years before heading off to an acclaimed solo recording and touring career in 2008 that continues to this day.  Converse made his bones with heavy blues-rock power trio Sunset Heights, touring with acts like Johnny Winter, Peter Green, Fats Domino, and Kenny Wayne Shepherd.  A devoted blues musician, he now kicks ass with his band, Vince Converse and Big Brother.  And Nathaniel Peterson shone brightly as a member of Savoy Brown. For one reason or another through the years -- be it music industry woes, conflicting gigs, budget issues, and most recently, the pandemic -- this hot blues album never got its release. That didn't stop the stories from spreading throughout the music world about what a tremendous album this was.  We're thrilled to be the label that finally releases this legendary album,” says Quarto Valley Records President & CEO Bruce Quarto. “Texas plays such an integral role in the history of blues music. So many great blues musicians hail from the Lonestar State  - Freddie King, Lightnin' Hopkins, T Bone Walker, Johnny and Edgar Winter, Stevie Rae Vaughn and Billy Gibbons -- just to name a few. It's only fitting that these three stellar blues shredders, Jim, Buddy and Vince, while a part of that history in their own right, join the list as Texas Scratch!”  I'd Rather be Lucky Than Good - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIASP8HwN_0  Ain't Got the Scratch - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMDB8k14jhs Learn more about your ad choices. We discuss chapters 1-14 of Robert Thorogood's second Marlow Murder Club novel, Death Comes to Marlow. Judith and her unlikely friends are back in action solving crime in their quaint hometown. Sir Peter Bailey, perhaps the biggest name in Marlow, calls Judith to ask for her insights on his impending wedding, as he fears for his life. Perplexed by the request, Judith gathers Suzie (because Becks will, of course, already be there), and makes her way to the party. Soon after arriving, a loud thud signals that the case is on, as Sir Bailey is crushed below his enormous bookshelf, legs sticking out like the Wicked Witch of the East. Flex is challenged with beating the lively cast of this novel to the solution as this crossword puzzle takes to the page. Also, We Wish You Were Here! 2SER's annual April fundraiser is on, with a bunch of great prizes on offer in return for your support of our work and the home it finds itself on. Have you considered that the scattered thinking you experience, the inability to do mundane tasks, and the noise in your head might be ADHD and not just menopause? Before peri menopause conditions like ADHD are easy to mask, but as our sex hormones start to decline dopamine disregulation (which is at the heart of ADHD) can be revealed or may get worse.  I'm not saying that EVERY women in menopause suddenly develops ADHD, but leaps in logic suggest that there could be a link.  Today's conversation is a tale of two halves.  I speak with Bev Thorogood (Author, TEDX speaker and Menopause Trainer) about menopause in the workplace and what it's like to have been diagnosed with ADHD later on in life.  In today's conversation we speak about:

Thanks for tuning in to Make Mine Paperback! This week is the conclusion of the month-long discussion of It's Lonely At The Centre Of The Earth, written and drawn by Zoe Thorogood. The first week looked at the art, while the second week focused on how Thorogood used the art to deliver her message. The most recent week centered on the desired audience of Zoe Thorogood's messaging. The final week will tie it all together by discussing the central theme of the novel: mental health struggles. To add legitimacy to the conversation the podcast brings on special guest Danille Giles, who works as a licensed counselor dealing with mental health issues. Does this comic book do a good job of addressing mental health struggles? What is the proper role of a mental health professional? Find out how MMP and Danielle feel about these questions and more, as this week deals with a topic that should be more commonly discussed.

Welcome back to another exciting discussion of It's Lonely At The Centre Of The Earth! MMP continues where they left off last week by comparing Zoe Thorogood's masterpiece to other comics from other well-established comic book creators. The focus this week is on the techniques used by Thorogood to deliver the comic's message. What makes this comic stand out is the masterful use of art to bring home the story's themes. Whereas the majority of comic books tend to have more focus on the words to establish a narrative, this novel breaks that trend by putting art front and center. The art combined with the presentation creates a truly unique reading experience. By presenting this as a biography, the emotions being presented are rawer than if the comic had been written as a work of fiction. Although not a superhero-based comic, It's Lonely At The Centre Of The Earth is a must-read for any comic book fan who wants to see the genre get pushed in new and exciting ways.
