July 4, 1954. Bay Village, Ohio. 31-year old Marilyn Reese Sheppard is bludgeoned to death inside her bedroom and her 30-year old husband, Sam Sheppard, is injured after claiming he was attacked by an intruder. Since Sam was known for conducting extramarital affairs, police believe that he fabricated the story and was responsible for killing his wife, so he is charged with Marilyn's murder. After being convicted at what is described as “The Trial of the Century”, Sam receives a sentence of life imprisonment, but there is great concern about the sensationalistic and biased media coverage surrounding the case. Sam spends nearly ten years in prison before his conviction is overturned and after the case makes it all the way to the United States Supreme Court, he is granted a second trial and winds up being acquitted. Decades later, Sam's supporters attempt to posthumously exonerate him by presenting evidence that points towards another suspect, but the crime remains shrouded in mystery. To commemorate the nine-year anniversary of “The Trail Went Cold”, we will be releasing our very first special three-part episode about one of the most controversial murder cases of all time. In our previous two episodes, we covered Sam Sheppard's two criminal trials and his posthumous civil trial and this week on Part Three, we will conclude the series by analyzing and breaking down the case. In this gripping episode of Crime Time, Inc., we dive deep into the perplexing case of Dr. Sam Sheppard, a prominent Ohio physician accused of brutally murdering his wife, Marilyn Sheppard, on July 4th, 1954. We explore the initial investigation, the shocking details of the crime scene, and the immediate suspicion that fell on Dr. Sam due to his infidelity and circumstantial evidence. The trial, significantly influenced by sensationalist media coverage, resulted in a controversial guilty verdict. Dr. Sam's persistent claims of innocence led to a series of appeals, spearheaded by F. Lee Bailey, that uncovered judicial bias and ultimately resulted in his exoneration in 1966. However, the quest for justice didn't end there as his son, Sam Reese Sheppard, continued efforts to clear his father's name and find the true perpetrator. Richard Eberling, a handyman with a criminal past, emerged as a potential suspect decades later, yet definitive proof remained elusive. With forensics advancements and relentless pursuit, this case underscores the complexities of the legal system, media influence, and the unending quest for truth amidst lingering doubts and ambiguities.00:00 Introduction to the Sam Sheppard Case00:26 The Crime Scene and Initial Suspicions01:57 Media Frenzy and Its Impact03:02 Trial and Conviction03:30 Appeals and Overturned Conviction04:43 Second Trial and Exoneration05:54 New Suspects and Ongoing Investigations09:18 Reflections and Unanswered Questions12:31 Lessons and Takeaways Hosted on Acast. The podcast discusses an article co-authored by Andrew Page, examining the use of GPT-4 for research publication. The conversation focuses on the authorship of articles generated by GPT-4 and the implications for academic publishing. Authorship and Ethics: Andrew discusses the question of authorship when AI-generated content is involved in research articles. He explores the ethical implications and potential biases associated with AI-assisted writing, such as the omission of minority figures and novel discoveries. He emphasizes the importance of transparency when using AI and its potential to democratize research, as long as ethical guidelines are maintained. AI & Scientific Journals: The podcast delves into the current landscape of AI in academic publishing. It addresses the commercial use of AI in crafting manuscripts for research articles and the necessity of distinguishing between manual and AI-generated contributions. The possible misalignment of GPT-4's commercial objectives with academic goals is highlighted. Risks and Benefits: Andrew outlines the risks of using AI in publishing, such as unintentional plagiarism, biases, and outdated methods. He provides an example of bioinformatics software recommending deprecated methods, illustrating the need for caution. The conversation also touches upon the AI's potential to introduce bias unintentionally, citing past incidents where AI models quickly adopted extremist views. Andrew's co-authors, Niamh Tumelty and Sam Sheppard, bring different perspectives on ethics and the impact of AI on publishing. Niamh, associated with the London School of Economics, emphasizes ethical considerations, while Sam, editor-in-chief of Microbial Genomics, underscores the need to adapt to the reality of AI contributions in journal submissions. In conclusion, the podcast underscores the importance of recognizing and navigating the ethical challenges posed by AI in academic publishing. It suggests that the technology may evolve faster than policies can adapt, necessitating an ongoing conversation among researchers, publishers, and AI developers. The trial for the violent murder of Marilyn Sheppard was considered to be the OJ Simpson case of its day, both in its public spectacle and in its unconventional journey through the law system. On July 4th, 1954, Merylin Sheppard was found brutally murdered in her Bay Village home in Ohio. The mother, who was four months pregnant at the time was bludgeoned to death. Hit 27 times by an unknown object.  Her husband Sam Sheppard survived the incident, claiming to have fought with a bushy-haired intruder and being rendered unconscious twice in his efforts. He would both be found guilty and innocent of her murder in separate trials over the years, and in this episode, we will see how the media, court system, and odd circumstances put an innocent man behind bars.  Hosted By: Cameron Jones, Nicole DeAnda Music By: Cameron Jones   --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/imnotcrazypod/support

TW/CW: Suicide In 1954, Marilyn Sheppard was beaten to death. Her husband, prominent surgeon Dr. Sam Sheppard stood accused. He maintained his innocence, even after his conviction. It would take new science to exonerate him. This case provided the inspiration for the TV show The Fugitive (and later the movie with Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones). We explore a second case too, the murder of Ron Rudin. Blood spatter evidence was key in both cases. Both have mysterious endings! Like all our cases this month, we build our forensic knowledge over the decades and finger printing is no exception. On July 4th, 1954, Marilyn Reese Sheppard was found brutally murdered inside her home in Bay Village, Ohio. Her husband's story seemed unbelievable, and the police quickly made Sam Sheppard their number one suspect. Sam was convicted of murder, then acquitted years later. His guilt or innocence is still a hotly debated topic. Join Mike and Gibby as they discuss the infamous unsolved murder of Marilyn Sheppard and the subsequent trials of her husband Sam. Sam's story was that he woke up to hear his wife screaming and was knocked unconscious in a fight with a bushy-haired intruder. The police didn't buy it and when they learned of Sam's infidelity, they used it as the motive for him to kill his wife. A window washer who told the police he thought Marilyn was attractive implicated himself in the murder over the years. But, what is the real story?
