In today's episode, Lauren talks to Andy Nelson! Andy grew up in a classic HSP scenario-- knowing he was different but not understanding why or how. It involved shame, low (to no) self esteem or self-confidence, and a constant yearning to understand himself. Until he graduated from college, he had no real identity to cling to, until he got into business with his brother. It gave him confidence and an identity, and around the same time, he learned from his therapist what HSP/SPS means. It changed his view of himself for the better and he's been working hard to spread understanding and awareness of the existence of HSPs everywhere. We talk about: what helped him embrace who he is how finding his passion helped him gain confidence his experience as a male HSP being a highly sensitive parent, feelings that come up, and how to navigate those feelings Connect with Andy: wanelson@gmail.com Mentioned in the episode: Fill out this form to join the HSP Community! My guest today is James Lawton! James is a proud HSP with an INFP personality type. During the week, he's a chemist by day and a loving dad to three amazing children by night, who continuously redefine his understanding of parenthood in all the best ways. His life's journey, from adolescence through adulthood, has been a never ending pursuit for answers, seeking to understand why he perceives and experiences the world in ways that often set him apart from those around him, especially with other men. It's a journey that has not only shaped his life but has also provided him with profound insights into the beauty of human emotions and connections. James talks about discovering that he's highly sensitive (20 years ago!), his experiences as a highly sensitive man, and gives tips and advice for other highly sensitive men. We talk about how TV shows and movies affect us, feeling "different" as a child, being a highly sensitive parent and having highly sensitive parents, and the benefits of being a highly sensitive parent to a highly sensitive child. Today my guest is Kendra Higgs! Kendra is a highly sensitive person, a Canadian Certified Counsellor with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA) and a Licensed Counselling Therapy Candidate with the College of Counselling Therapists of New Brunswick (CCTNB). Kendra is committed to creating a safe space for clients to discover and explore the patterns and dynamics that get in the way of moving toward desired change. Kendra has specific training to work with couples as well as individuals with a broad range of concerns, including: anxiety, managing anger, difficult life transitions, spiritual/faith concerns, grief, loss, emotional overwhelm, stress, relational difficulties and self-worth. Kendra brings a passion for understanding her clients and a posture of curiosity and inquiry to her work. Among other things, she integrates an emotion & body focus to narrative therapy (NT), family systems theory, the Gottman Method of Couples Therapy and self-compassion in order to help clients understand the ways in which the difficulties that show up can start to tell a restrictive and unhelpful story about who they are. Kendra supports her clients to re-write that story to be one that is supportive and resourcing so they may find the freedom to be their most authentic selves. Kendra is always learning and in recent years has been exploring the areas of embodiment, adverse religious experiences and maternal mental health. She is celebrating 10 years with her husband this year, has a 2 year old daughter she is crazy about and another little one arriving in August.
