Talk about a Christmas gift! Gold and silver both hit new record highs Christmas week, with gold eclipsing $4,500 and silver above $70. But are these precious metals in a bubble? In this episode of the Midweek Memo podcast, argues that they are not. He thinks that the gold and silver markets are telling us something - that they are signaling an important monetary paradigm shift. This week, Mike also explains why the Magi gave the gift of gold to Jesus and tells you where that gold is today and how it got there. (Yes, we know!)

Send us a textRecorded in October ahead of their North American run with Fit For A King and Make Them Suffer, this conversation with Darius Tehrani of Spite feels even more significant now that the tour has wrapped and New World Killer has fully landed. The episode dives into the release of New World Killer on Rise Records, unpacking Darius' personal influences and the lasting impact of late icons like Ozzy Osbourne, while also tracing Spite's origins back to their formation in 2014. Darius also reflects on the unique experience of performing alongside his brother Alex, whose presence on guitar has been integral to the band's identity from the start. While Spite are often grouped alongside modern heavyweights like Lorna Shore, Bodysnatcher, and Traitors, New World Killer makes one thing clear: this fifth record solidifies Spite's own unmistakable lane. It's a release that captures the band at their most confident, refined, and unapologetically themselves — a defining moment that resonated powerfully on the road and beyond.Tune in now. Today, we walk through the often-misunderstood story of the wise men, their long journey, intentional worship, and the deeply symbolic gifts they brought to Jesus. Gold for the King. Frankincense for the High Priest. Myrrh for the Savior who came to die.Their gifts weren't last-minute add-ons; they were thoughtful, planned acts of worship. As we enter the busiest days of December, this episode invites you to consider: Are you offering Jesus your leftovers, or your first and best? Let's make God our central thought this season—not an afterthought.Pursuing God with Gene Appel is designed to help you pursue God, build community, and unleash compassion. Grounded in Scripture and shaped by Eastside's conviction that God's grace is for everyone, each episode invites you to discover God's presence and activity in your life.

Preaching Point: The Wise Men's gift of gold should remind us to revere Jesus as the unrivaled King of the universe.Main Text: Matthew 2:1-12 (ESV) 1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” 3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. 5 They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet: 6 “ ‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.' ” 7 Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” 9 After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. 12 And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.Teaching Points:Affirm Jesus' Divine KingshipOffer Jesus Your Best, Not Just What's Left Anticipate Jesus' Eternal Kingship Application Questions:What is one observation or application you found helpful from this week's sermon?Read John 18:36-37, Matthew 2:1-2, and Micah 5:2. How does affirming the Divine Kingship of Jesus reshape your priorities and ambitions? What practical steps should you take this Christmas season to orient your life fully around the Divine Kingship of Jesus? Read 2 Samuel 24:18-25 and Matthew 10:37-39. Where are you tempted, and even guilty, of giving Jesus less than your best and settling to give him whatever is left over? What are the most common culprits that lead you into this pattern, and what steps can you take to eradicate them moving forward? How do these passages, along with the Wise Men and their gifts in Matthew 2:11, challenge you to be intentional about giving Jesus what he truly deserves? Read Luke 1:30-33 and Isaiah 9:6-7. How can you use this Christmas season to better prepare yourself and your family for Jesus' eternal reign as King?

Pastor Kevin's message teaches that Jesus is the true King who deserves our worship, just as the wise men bowed before Him with joy and costly gifts. He is the King with full authority over all creation, and our lives hold together when we live under His rule. We honor Him best when we offer Him our first and finest in every area of our lives.

Did you know the Tudors didn't give gifts at Christmas? For them, New Year's Day was the most political, strategic, and nerve-wracking day of the entire festive season; a glittering ritual where loyalty was displayed, and favour was won (or lost). Welcome to Day 3 of my Tudor Christmas Advent series. I'm historian and author Claire Ridgway, and today we're stepping inside the astonishing world of Tudor gift-giving. In this episode, you'll learn: - Why New Year's Day was the true “gift season” - How Henry VIII used gifts to reward, punish, and send unmistakable signals - What Anne Boleyn gave (and what Henry gave her in return!) - The lavish presents exchanged across the reigns of Mary I and Elizabeth I - Why gifts were not sentimental… but political tools From Holbein-designed silver fountains to early wristwatches, from embroidered coats to gold whistles, Tudor New Year's gifts tell us everything about power, favour, and desire at court. If you enjoy this deep dive into Tudor ritual, please like, subscribe, and let me know in the comments: Which Tudor monarch would YOU choose a gift for, and what would you give them? #TudorChristmas #TudorHistory #HenryVIII #AnneBoleyn #NewYearsDay #RoyalHistory #HistoryWithClaire #TudorCourt #OnThisDay #HistoricalFacts

What does it take to grow up loving music in a non-musical household—and still carve your way onto one of heavy music's most respected labels? On this episode of Bringin' It Backwards, Adam and Tera Lisicky sit down with Joe from Lightworker for a no-holds-barred conversation about humble roots in Redwood City, navigating sketchy Bay Area venues as a teenager, and learning to channel creative urges through violin and guitar—even if it meant skipping lunch to buy new CDs. Joe opens up about his evolution from writing songs alone to forming Lightworker, grinding through DIY releases, and the pivotal moment when Solid State Records offered them a deal just as they were wrapping up their debut album. We talk about the pressure and privilege of working with heavy-hitting producers like Daniel Gailey (Fit For A King, Phinehas) and Beau Burchell (Saosin) for two albums in a row, and how the creative process—marked by pandemic writer's block and late-night artistic breakthroughs—helped shape Lightworker's heavier, most personal record to date, How the Beautiful Decay. Whether you're an aspiring artist or just love a good behind-the-scenes story, this episode offers real talk about perseverance, DIY hustle, and what it means to “do the work” in an ever-changing music industry. Hit play to hear Joe's journey from classical music as a kid to fronting one of the Bay Area's fiercest heavy bands—and don't forget to subscribe, follow, and join the Bringin' It Backwards community for more conversations you won't hear anywhere else.
