The tenor Russell Watson's remarkable career took him from playing from working mens clubs in Salford to performing at the Vatican. But his life hasn't been completely charmed - he discusses the brain tumour that threatened his life as well as his voice and how he found his way back to centre stage.Jackie Kay is one of the UK's most lauded poets who turned to writing as a child as a sanctuary from the difficulties of life as an adopted, if much loved, half-Nigerian child in Scotland. A new BBC One documentary tells her story "In Her Own Words"; we'll be asking why she wanted to do that. Doctor-turned-comedian-turned-author Adam Kay's first book This Is Going To Hurt sold over 3 million copies and was adapted into a multi award-winning TV series. Now he's taken another career turn into children's fiction with a new character – Dexter Procter, the ten year old doctor. As an actress Deborah McAndrew played Angie Freeman on Coronation Street in the 1990s. She left the Rovers Return behind long ago for a career as a writer and her latest play tells the story of the night an Unidentified Flying Object landed near Stoke-on-Trent's Bentilee housing estate. The show draws on multiple eyewitness accounts from the time to create a warm and funny depiction of an extraordinary event happening to very ordinary people. Plus music from The Lemon Twigs's latest album A Dream Is All We Know. Presented by Nihal Arthanayake Produced by Olive Clancy
You know I'm no good…This week we “read” a coffee table book “by” legendary jazz singer Amy Winehouse. Curated by her parents, In Her Own Words is a collection of diary entries, photos, lyrics, report cards, and aspirational mood boards from a young Amy. We dive into the chanteuse's genius lyrics, her obsession with diners, why Lily was afraid of liking Amy in college, skull tattoos, Tony Bennett abuse, how to construct the perfect beehive, and, ultimately, the ethics behind making this book. PLUS, Steven promises to remake Back to Black…. *Stella not includedSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On this week's episode, we unfortunately feel the need to discuss the very serious allegations surrounding Tilian Pearson of Dance Gavin Dance. We've covered the band many times over the entirety of our show and they've been featured a lot in our Top Albums of the Year lists. So given the nature of situation and how much we've loved Dance Gavin Dance's music on The Skinny, we thought it would be appropriate to unpack our feelings on what's come to light over the last couple of weeks and how it will affect our coverage of the band's new album and what may come down the line. This episode contains a lot of discussion of sensitive subject matter such as s*xual a**ault, coercion, r**e, and manipulation. If you are sensitive to that and would prefer to skip past it, please fast forward to this time code to the latter half of the show. On this week's episode, Keith Karol, lead singer of pop punk band Northvale, joins me to chat about his musical journey. Northvale is an up and coming band from NJ including Keith Karol (Vocals), Mike Piacentini (Guitar), Chris Stroz (Guitar), Kevin Miller (Bass) and Aren Millan (Drums). I came across Northvale on Tik Tok and immediately reached out to interview them. Keith and I discuss his personal music journey from listening to Doo Wop and Hip Hop, to picking up a guitar, learning how to sing, playing guitar in Casual Friday, to finally becoming the lead singer of Northvale. We talk about the power of DMing people just for the heck of it - what's the worst that can happen? Reaching out to people has led to Northvale working with Joey Flemming of In Her Own Words, AJ Perdomo of A Dangerous Summer, Oliver Baxxter of Broadside, and Hit the Lights. Only being 25 years old, Keith and the other guys are all finding ways to balance full-time jobs with pursuing music, keeping up on social media, and building their tribe of fans. Keith shares great advice on balancing music and life, pursuing music of any sort, staying relevant on socials, and much more. I'm so excited to share this interview and share this rad dude and band with you! Taylor Ballantyne, Director / Photographer Ballantyne began her career in Los Angeles with commercial and creative work in the fashion and design world. She segued into video production by shooting and editing films for New York, Milan and Paris fashion weeks. Simultaneously, she studied under legendary photojournalist Ken Regan at Camera 5 Inc., where she was introduced to the commercial, film, and editorial business of photography. Here is where she began building her portfolio and film reel. In 2013 Ballantyne joined Sports Illustrated as a photographer for all brands within SI. In July 2017, she received her first national cover for Sports Illustrated; becoming one in an elite group of women to receive a national cover in the Magazine's 60-year history. In February 2018, she directed, produced and photographed her first spread in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue and created a short film entitled — “In Her Own Words” - a powerful black-and-white campaign that replaced the traditional Body Paint for the issue. Under Ballantyne's direction, this was the first black-and-white, no-swimsuit series with an all female crew in the 54 year history of the SI Swimsuit magazine. In November 2020, Ballantyne relocated to Nashville and was asked to direct Jake Hoot, “The Voice” winner of 2019, in his first music video “I Would've Loved You” featuring Kelly Clarkson. This sparked Ballantynes' directorial debut in the world of music. Following her debut into the world of music videos, she was called to direct her first feature length concert film and documentary for Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Though her background lies within commercial and advertising, Ballantyne's goal is to continue on this path as a director, continuing her work in music, commercial and film. Ballantyne studied at the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara and holds a BFA in Photography from the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York City. She is currently based in Nashville but travels across the country and internationally often for work. http://www.taylorballantyne.com/ https://www.instagram.com/taylorbphoto/ https://www.instagram.com/taylorbfilm/ --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thewrongadvicepod/support

Boasting features such as Joey Flemming of In Her Own Words on their debut single, “Sleepwalking”, and AJ Perdomo of The Dangerous Summer on the song, “High Tide”. Comprised of members of New Jersey bands The Victory and Mirror Eyes, as well as other local bands, Northvale came together in 2020 and quickly went about establishing a heart-on-sleeve, emotive brand of pop-punk that displays the quintessential energy of the genre, whilst delivering honest lyricism and melodic guitar work. Joining forces with the likes of The Dangerous Summer's AJ Perdomo and In Her Own Words' Joey Fleming, Northvale's debut EP came as a cathartic, lockdown-busting collection, setting the tone for band's direction moving into 2021. Upcoming debut LP, 'Where We Go When There's Nothing Left'deals with loss, heartbreak and acceptance; a relatable and engaging collection. Lead single “Good Intentions” ft. Ollie Baxxter deals with the personal growth associated with moving past toxic environments. New video "Good Intentions" ft. Ollie Baxxter is out now. Thank you for listening! We are so thrilled to chop it up with our new friend, Shayna from Vacay and Vittles! In Her Own Words... Some people like to collect things like stamps or shot glasses; I am a collector (and sharer) of experiences. Whether I'm traveling the world or trying a new restaurant down the street, I enjoy exploring the unknown and sharing those moments with others either thru videos and photographs or in person via the events I host. "Vacays & Vittles" started as an Instagram page for solely for my food and travel pictures after a couple of my friends told me I post too much of them on MY personal page (#Haters). And while I've always enjoyed hosting and entertaining friends and family in my home, transitioning it into a business was the last thing on my mind. I always worried, if I turned what I loved to do into a business, would I love it as much or would start to feel like work? As I begin to document the things I ate and drank and the places I traveled to, I connected with people who inspired me to continue and helped me to focus on finding my own lane in my own time. I'd have these ideas of really cool events to host based off of something I ate or drank or a place I went and I'd think to myself, "This would be really cool if someone put this together, I'd pay for that experience." Then one day it hit me - "Why can't I do it myself?" And the rest was history... The Pour Pairing Rosé Box "Pour Pairings" is a subscription box curated for the wine curious, wine lovers and wine enthusiasts. Our mission is to bring a little fun to wine education and food pairing experimentation by combining unique foods, the latest wine-related gadgets and tools, and other wine adjacent items right to your doorstep. The items in each box will complement the "wine of the month" which could be a simple grape varietal or a style of wine from a particular region. With "Vacays and Vittles", you're going to see a lot of amazing food recommendations, mainly in the Baltimore area but also throughout my travels, interesting cocktails, and beautiful destinations. You're also (should you choose to come) going to experience some really dope and unique events. From donuts and wine pairings to Caribbean fetes to specially curated dinners, there's something for everyone and it will always be a good time. What on Earth is a "diddy"? What does it mean when an album "slaps"? And why do Mike and Adam come up with nonsensical terms and phrases for songs and albums instead of just saying whether or not they enjoy the music like normal people?! The answer to these quandaries and many more can be found in this week's episode, dear listener! Over the many years, we've said a lot of weird stuff and used a lot of silly phrases when we are reviewing and describing some great music. Well, it turns out that it never occurred to us to ever explain ourselves and what we mean when we say words like 'bop', or 'banger', or 'dirty brown water trash'. So a few of our listeners over on Discord challenged us to actually define these terms to get a better understanding of what they mean in our heads when we say them. This was a fun one to do, so we hope that you enjoy it as much as we did! Also on the episode, we review albums from bands like Blindside, Rome Hero Foxes, Canterbury, boygenius, Palisades, In Her Own Words, The Dave Matthews Band, Stone Temple Pilots, and Pearl Jam. #BoyGenius #Blindside #Canterbury #TheDaveMatthewsBand #InHerOwnWords #Palisades #PearlJam #RomeHeroFoxes #StoneTemplePilots Find us on social media: https://discord.gg/2jv87Wypvw https://www.twitter.com/TheSkinnyPod https://www.instagram.com/mikewearsprada/ theskinnywithmikeandadam@gmail.com --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theskinnywithmikeandadam/support

This is a black arts and culture site. We will be exploring the African Diaspora via the writing, performance, both musical and theatrical (film and stage), as well as the visual arts of Africans in the Diaspora and those influenced by these aesthetic forms of expression. I am interested in the political and social ramifications of art on society, specifically movements supported by these artists and their forebearers. It is my claim that the artists are the true revolutionaries, their work honest and filled with raw unedited passion. They are our true heroes. Ashay! 1. At the launch of the Nova 106.9 series of on-location broadcasts of the Ash, Kip and Luttsy with Susie O'Neill breakfast show, Mediaweek had the chance to speak in-depth with O'Neill. This new interview makes a nice companion piece to the recent In Her Own Words series Mediaweek partnered with Nova Entertainment for where spoke to inspirational women in radio. Mediaweek has been lucky to have done several podcasts with Ash, Kip and Luttsy at different times, so it was great to get time with the former swimming champ and one of the important pillars in the success the Brisbane breakfast show has enjoyed in recent years. Although Nova was #1 in the first survey of 2018, it has been challenged in breakfast by Hit 105, something which O'Neill mention in our podcast. O'Neill talks frankly to Mediaweek about the decision not to jump straight into a media career after she stopped swimming. She also details how Nova Entertainment and her breakfast colleagues look after their star recruit and she remembers, with a fair amount of anger still, what she said on the record about former garden guru Don Burke's appalling and insulting behaviour toward her. The interview gives listeners an insight into just what makes O'Neill so compelling on the radio. Listen here also to the eight-part In Her Own Words podcast series. https://mediaweek.com.au/nova-podcast-in-her-own-words-womens-day/ Read here about Nova Brisbane's broadcast plans during the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. https://mediaweek.com.au/nova-106-9-commonwealth-games-partnership-launch/

Writer / Producer – Sheridan Films Sheri Leigh started in theater after training at The Drama Center in London. Among her directing and writing projects was “In Her Own Words” about Marilyn Monroe. It played in Los Angeles, Palm Beach, Atlanta, and Capetown, South Africa. With the national Kaiser Permanente AV Department, Sheri produced everything from short films to the breakthrough 10-hour series “Living with HIV,” that was seen around the world. Her organizational skills were engaged in later years as a political campaign coordinator for certain presidential and congressional candidates. Thanks to Edward Kovach, Sheri began writing screenplays. Their first collaboration was THE ANGEL CHANNEL, now titled THE GLITCH. Sheri Leigh has also written: “The Sky is Burning,” a story of the physicists wives at Los Alamos, “War in the Heart”, a Civil War miniseries based on the true story of a master spy. With Ben Lewin, the director and writer of “The Sessions” that won the Sundance Audience Award in 2012, two comedy film scripts emerged; “The Customer from Hell” and “Serial Bride” – now in preproduction with SuchMuch films. Sheri is the author of two books: “Cheated!” a graphic novel about the 2004 presidential election, and “The Bride Revealed,” a photographic essay about getting married. She and her husband Dan Moore have been fortunate to be able to travel to many desirable film locations around the world. Yet, it was their stay in New Orleans only a few months after Katrina that convinced them they’d found a new home. With her partner Dan Moore and Sheridan Film Company, Sheri Leigh Myers is living her dream – making films that stir the soul and living in New Orleans.

Seeing this photo at a NY Museum sparks her interest and she is determined to learn more about the picture, who the woman is, why she was holding a gun and what was going through her mind. As the author flashes back ten years to the murder that involved the woman in the photo and five more to 2000, we learn the connection between the lawyer investigating the murder and the key players. Phillip will answer questions about the book, talk about his next book and discuss how he created the plot and the three time periods for the novel. I am your host Fran Lewis the author of the Faces Behind the Stones series, editor of MJ Magazine and my latest upcoming release: In Her Own Words.
