Today's poem is one of the few enduring works of a poet and playwright who burned brightly during his heyday and then blinked out almost entirely. Happy reading.Leigh, son of James Mathews Leigh, was born in London on 29 March 1837. At an early age he engaged in literary pursuits. From time to time appeared collections of his lyrics, under the titles of Carols of Cockayne, 1869 (several editions); Gillott and Goosequill, 1871; A Town Garland: a Collection of Lyrics, 1878; and Strains from the Strand: Trifles in Verse, 1882. His verse was always fluent, but otherwise of very slender merit. For the stage he translated many French comic operas. His first theatrical essay was in collaboration with Charles Millward in a musical spectacle for the Theatre Royal in Birmingham. His ‘Falsacappa,' music by Offenbach, was produced at the Globe Theatre on 22 April 1871; ‘Le Roi Carotte' at the Alhambra on 3 June 1872; ‘Bridge of Sighs,' opera-bouffe, at the St. James's, 18 Nov. 1872; ‘White Cat,' a fairy spectacle, at the Queen's, Long Acre, on 2 Dec. 1875; ‘Voyage dans la Lune,' opera-bouffe, at the Alhambra, on 15 April 1876; ‘Fatinitza,' opera-bouffe (the words were printed), adapted from the German, at the Alhambra on 20 June 1878; ‘The Great Casimir,' a vaudeville, at the Gaiety, on 27 Sept. 1879; ‘Cinderella,' an opera, with music by J. Farmer, at St. James's Hall, on 2 May 1884 (the words were published in 1882); ‘The Brigands,' by H. Meilhac and L. Halévy, adapted to English words by Leigh, was printed in 1884. For ‘Lurette,' a comic opera, Avenue, 24 March 1883, he wrote the lyrics; and with Robert Reece he produced ‘La Petite Mademoiselle,' comic opera, Alhambra, on 6 October 1879. He edited ‘Jeux d'Esprit written and spoken by French and English Wits and Humorists,' in 1877, and wrote Mark Twain's ‘Nightmares' in 1878.His last theatrical venture—a complete failure—was ‘The Prince Methusalem,' a comic opera, brought out at the Folies Dramatiques (now the Kingsway), Great Queen Street, London, on 19 May 1883. He was a Spanish, Portuguese, and French scholar, a brilliant and witty conversationalist, and a humorous singer. He died in his rooms in Lowther's private hotel, 35 Strand, London, on 16 June 1883, and was buried in Brompton cemetery on 22 June.-bio via Wikipedia This is a public episode. You Just Go Faster: Cycling, Community and Commerce with Rapha's CCO This episode of RetailCraft takes us inside premium cycling brand Rapha, our host Ian Jindal chats with Joel Natale, Chief Commercial Officer, at Rapha's London headquarters. Their conversation explores how this 20-year-old brand transformed cycling culture, built a powerful community, and continues to balance premium positioning with growth.   [00:00:00] Introduction to Rapha and Joel's Role [00:01:00] "Changed The Sport": Rapha's Market Impact [00:06:52] "More Than Just Shops": The Clubhouse Concept [00:11:16] "Suffering Together": The Community Philosophy [00:15:50] "The Rapha Cycling Club": 10 Years of RCC Membership [00:18:23] "Product Longevity": Sustainability and Repairs [00:23:57] "I Won't Be A Lifer": Joel's Cycling Industry Journey [00:27:19] "Incredibly Lucky": From Brompton to Rapha [00:30:37] "A Relentless Desire to Understand the Customer": Brand Leadership [00:34:27] "You Just Go Faster": Rapha's Future Direction Rapha's Origins and Market Position Joel introduces Rapha as a 20-year-old cycling brand founded by Simon Mottram in 2004 that "really changed the sport" and how people engage with cycling. Rapha entered a market divided between established performance brands and cheaper, poorly fitting products, with Mottram's vision to create "a more discerning and thoughtful product brand" engaged with cycling culture. Rapha revolutionized the industry with its bold pricing strategy, setting retail prices approximately three times the market average. This approach initially shocked consumers but transformed industry standards, with other brands taking nearly five years to realize they could also aim for premium price points. Though the brand has expanded its range to serve diverse cyclists across price points and terrains, Rapha remains firmly positioned as a premium brand sitting "top halfway to the top" of the market. Clubhouses: More Than Just Shops One of Rapha's most distinctive innovations has been its clubhouses. These aren't simply retail spaces but community hubs where cyclists engage with the brand and each other. When Rapha introduced this concept around 2010-2012, cycling-focused cafés where riders could bring their bikes inside was revolutionary. The clubhouses serve multiple purposes beyond retail. As Joel explains, "On a Sunday afternoon, you give people a space to watch races. On a Wednesday morning, you give them a space to go after they've trained." This community-building approach reflects Rapha's broader mission to grow the sport rather than just sell products. Rapha strategically locates its clubhouses in major global cities and "culturally important cycling locations" such as Mallorca and Boulder, Colorado—choices that might not be obvious from pure data analysis but make sense for a brand deeply connected to cycling culture. The Rapha Cycling Club (RCC) The Rapha Cycling Club celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2024. Unlike conventional loyalty programs focused on discounts, RCC was built around creating an actual cycling club where "people might meet and ride together, race together." RCC offers tangible benefits including half-price coffee at clubhouses, organized rides, bike hire, and access to exclusive club kit at more accessible price points. While Joel acknowledges that the club "peaked in COVID" and needs reinvigoration, he emphasizes that for many members—especially those living near clubhouses—the benefits and community connections remain valuable. Sustainability and Product Longevity Cycling inherently offers sustainability advantages as an environmentally friendly transportation option. Rapha's focus on high-quality products naturally aligns with sustainability principles, with Joel mentioning he still owns and uses a Rapha jersey from 2008—illustrating the brand's commitment to durability. The company maintains repair services in the US, UK, and Europe, reflecting its commitment to product longevity. Beyond repairs, Rapha has expanded its sustainability efforts to include carbon emissions management and increased use of "environmentally preferred materials," while acknowledging the challenges specific to cycling apparel, which often uses multiple materials for performance requirements. Industry Passion and Future Direction Joel's career has been entirely within the cycling industry, beginning part-time at Evans Cycles while at university before joining their purchasing department after graduation. Despite initially thinking "I won't be a lifer," he's remained in the cycling business for 20 years. Joel reflects on the special bonds formed in cycling retail: "When you do cycling retail, you make really close friends because you've already passed the bar of 'we're all cyclists'." Before joining Rapha, Joel worked at Brompton, describing himself as "incredibly lucky to work for both brands." When asked about skills needed for success in brand-led businesses, Joel emphasizes "a relentless desire to understand the customer." He notes that while being passionate about your niche is essential, professionals also need to "be one step back" to avoid confusing personal preferences with broader customer needs. The podcast concludes with Joel discussing Rapha's future under new CEO Fran Miller (sister of former professional cyclist David Millar), who recently joined from Belstaff. Rather than focusing on short-term fixes, they're taking a longer view: "We're going to look at a three to four year horizon to rebuild this place," supported by patient ownership that allows for long-term planning. About Our Guest Joel Natale is Chief Commercial Officer at Rapha, overseeing product strategy, merchandising, supply chain, and e-commerce operations. His 20-year career in the cycling industry includes prior roles at Evans Cycles and Brompton, bringing both personal passion and professional expertise to his work at this premium global cycling brand.   --  Run time: 38 minutes INFORMATION: [

My annual tradition of a winter ride in the sunshine state continues! Unlike past years, I'm shaking things up with the start and focusing on a coastal ride along the East Coast Greenway before turning inland. But the Florida Coast is the name of the game for this adventure, and on this episode we preview the ride! Florida Coast Preview The ride Jacksonville to WDW over 4 days! East Coast Greenway! A ferry! Mostly coastal riding with the ocean over my left shoulder (who knew?) Revisting the Florida Coast to Coast Trail Riding all the way to my finish line resort at WDW (no Lyfts at the end this time!) Another thrilling ride into the belly of the beast errr Mouse and then celebrating by flying the Falcon and drinking blue milk and hitting the cantina Potential issues I need this trip more than I've ever needed a bike adventure so there's a lot of mental energy riding on this one… so you just KNOW shit will go sideways! Have not gotten the Brompton checked and likely won't have an opportunity as I have only a day or two in DC before I fly down to JAX. What could possibly go wrong? Tour Journal episodes start… next week, AND this gets us almost all the way to episode 400. Stay tuned for a live show announcement for mid-April!

This week on the Velo Podcast, host Mike Levy is back with Alvin Holbrook and Will Tracy for the first official video podcast of 2025, and this week it's all about reflecting on our favorite rides of the past year.  A favorite ride doesn't have to be the longest, hardest, or have any certain superlative attached to it — it just has to be memorable in one way or another. But before recounting our favorite rides, which range from dream routes in far-flung locations to an overnight solo expedition, we discuss some news. Are AI coaching tools coming for the jobs of cycling coaches? We discuss Jim Cotton's story about Team UAE's new AI tool called Anna, and the implications it may have on training and race strategies.  In the world of cyclocross racing, the defending world champion Mathieu van der Poel is still out with a bruised rib, while Wout van Aert is back to his winning ways. How are things shaping up weeks out from the world championship? And Betsy Welch has a story about politics in bike lanes in Toronto. A premier wants to take away bike lanes — but a video game designer is fighting back. Alvin also fills us in on what's in the test pipeline for him: including an inflatable helmet and a gravel Brompton.

I'm going to North Dakota and I am unreasonably excited about it! For years I have been stuck at 48 states visited (and for real, not just airport states) BUT the final two were ND and Alaska, and no disrespect to North Dakota but Alaska needs to be my 50th. But the opportunity to get there was shattered ten years ago when my original ride on the Northern Tier route was scuttled by a heat wave I wasn't interested in riding through. But now… I'm doing it. With a bike. And buffaloes.   The Adventure   Heavily car aided. Very heavily. Like, mostly. Starting and ending in MSP (there for a work thing) All camping Brompton riding daily Crossing the state TWICE Urban camping in Fargo! Theodore Roosevelt NP! Buffalo! Camping! Riding! Finally getting wheels down on the Northern Tier bicycle route! Rest stop car camping in the very friendly sleep-in rest stops of ND! Did I mention the 49th state visit?   Itinerary    Day 1  Car rental  Camping in Fargo and Lindenwood Campground Biking into town for dinner and all the Fargo nightlife I can handle   Day 2 Pre dawn departure  Gain an hour driving across the state into MT Camping at TR NP at Cottonwood Campground Buffalo herds nearby and sometimes they saunter into camp?   Day 3 Half day at TR NP to cycle a bit Drive back across the state Lose an hour coming back into CT Rest area about halfway to MSP   Day 4 Pre dawn departure  Get back to MSP and fly home   Gear Rental car Brompton Camping gear that fits in a checked suitcase - going with basics and adding "luxuries" if I can since this is car camping Stove a must - likely buying fuel in MN or ND   Weather Not as cold as you'd think for fall Hoping for dry, preparing for not   How much biking? fWotD Episode 2694: 1894–95 New Brompton F.C. season Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Thursday, 19 September 2024 is 1894–95 New Brompton F.C. season.During the 1894–95 English football season, New Brompton F. C. (since 1912 called Gillingham F. C.) competed in the Southern Football League Division Two. It was the first season in which the team took part in a league competition. The club had been formed a year earlier but in its inaugural season played only friendly matches and games in the qualifying rounds of the FA Cup and FA Amateur Cup. In 1894, New Brompton turned professional and joined the newly-formed Southern League. The team dominated Division Two of the new league, winning all but one of their matches, and gained promotion to Division One by winning an end-of-season "test match" against Swindon Town, who had finished bottom of the higher division. New Brompton also entered the FA Cup, reaching the third qualifying round. The team played 15 competitive matches, winning 13, drawing none, and losing two. Arthur Rule was the team's top goalscorer; he scored 18 goals in the regular league season and 4 in the test match. Harry Buckland and Alf Meager made the most appearances, playing in every match. The highest attendance recorded at the club's home, the Athletic Ground, was approximately 8,000 for the visit of near-neighbours Chatham in the FA Cup.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:34 UTC on Thursday, 19 September 2024.For the full current version of the article, see 1894–95 New Brompton F.C. season on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Aria.

Jordan started working life on a market stall and has worked in restaurants and bars but when she had a chat with plumber turned electrician, Lee Sutton, they decided to go for it and set up myenergi. Lee is the technical side of the business but it's quite clear that Jordan is the marketing and sales powerhouse although, as she points out to Rory, she has been known to get to work with the soldering iron. Innovation and sustainability are the cornerstones of their business and manufacturing their products in the UK is a USP for them. myenergi manufactures a range of eco devices which manage energy sources. The zappi fast charges your EV, the eddi helps you maximise self-generated solar and/or wind power, the libbi stores your solar energy and cleverly manages your use of the grid, and the harvi enables you to install zappi and eddi wirelessly. As you'll hear, Jordan is knowledgeable and innovative. The business is expanding worldwide with business across Europe and now in Australia. There are challenges however. Britain has 1.3 million homes with solar power, but Germany is way ahead at 4 million homes. Jordan feels the EV market has softened recently but she expects it to bounce back. In our Top Two Challenges feature Jordan says that "boots on the ground" explaining and selling the products is what is needed for both myenergi and the industry as a whole. We look into their statements to understand why they felt these moves were necessary. Elsewhere, former transport minister S. Iswaran was slapped with 8 new charges that allege he had obtained, as a public servant, valuable items worth nearly $19,000. It's a long list of wines, whiskies, golf clubs, and a titanium Brompton bicycle that costs almost $8,000! We look deeper into the list to try and understand the rationale behind accepting these gifts.Find us here! Our websiteYLB SubredditYLB TikTok YLB IGFolkloryCapture stories & memories from your parents while they are still around!Click here to chat with us on WhatsApp, or find out more info at Folklory.comSingapore Orders Takedown of Israel Embassy PostIsrael embassy's post on Palestine ‘unacceptable', risks undermining harmony in S'pore: ShanmugamVivian Balakrishnan meets Netanyahu, tells Israeli leaders military actions in Gaza have 'gone too far'FB Post by Masagos ZulkifliGovt tells Israeli embassy to remove Facebook post that was an 'astonishing attempt to rewrite history', says ShanmugamSingapore Orders Israeli Embassy to Delete ‘Inappropriate' Social Post About ‘Palestine' | TIMEIswaran Slapped With Additional ChargesWhisky, golf clubs, Brompton bike: What Iswaran is accused of obtaining in his 8 new chargesIswaran's case: A timeline of events from graft probe, resignation and new chargesCPIB Statement: Additional Charges for S IswaranWho is Lum Kok Seng, the man named in Iswaran's new charges?[Jul 2023] Iswaran's Cycling VideoBrompton T Line Bicycle websiteAlbert Bichot websiteGordon & MacPhail websiteHonma Golf websiteScotty Cameron Phantom websiteOne Shiok CommentComment by Original Goat 1Comment by nyetkattOne Shiok ThingConan O'Brien Must Go | Official TrailerFULL SEGMENT – The Rock blasts Rhodes and Rollins in a Rock Concert: March 15, 2024Mics and Headphones from @shureChairs from @ergotunechairDesk from @castlerysgEdited and mixed by Tristen Yeak

Jordan Brompton is the Co-Founder of myenergi, one of the world's fastest-growing renewable energy technology companies. Building a nine figure green energy company with 400 staff, it's safe to say myenergi is turning heads in the renewable tech space. The company's huge success started with the invention of the Zappi-charger, the world's first solar charger for electric vehicles capable of using 100% renewable energy. It began as an idea over a bottle of wine with her business partner, and now drives tens of millions of sales each year. However, myenergi's journey hasn't always been plain sailing. I wanted to sit down with Jordan to get to the bottom of what it's really like running an energy company as a woman. We discuss how she has scaled the business herself, the obstacles she faces on a daily basis, and why it's important to learn your weaknesses, as well as your strengths. Now myenergi's CMO, Jordan gives a realistic view into the whirlwind of being on the front line of a startup in an often tumultuous industry. I am so excited to share this episode with you!
