Welche Architektur prägt unsere Innenstädte? Fachwerk-Romantik oder mittelalterliche Gässchen sind in Deutschland eher die Ausnahme. Nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg dominiert der Wiederaufbau-Stil der 50er-, 60er- und 70er-Jahre. Und das heißt oft: große Kästen und viel Beton. Doch was lange als hässlich, gar als Bausünde empfunden wurde, wird plötzlich neu bewertet. Aus ökologischen Gründen - denn Abriss und Neubau ist Gift für's Kilma. Und aus ästhetischen Gründen - denn so schlecht wie ihr Image ist die Betonarchitektur der 1970er Jahre bei weitem nicht. Das Architekturkollektiv ANA hat sich jetzt intensiv mit einem bizarr-brutalistischen Gebäude in Offenbach beschäftigt.

Esel sind weit intelligenter als ihr Ruf. «NETZ NATUR» fragt: Wie kam der Mensch zum Esel? Und wo steht der Esel heute? Esel haben die Welt verändert – ohne sie wäre die Geschichte des Menschen wohl anders verlaufen. Im Atlasgebirge in Nordafrika ist ein Teil von ihnen bereits ausgestorben und von den Überlebenden weiter südwestlich am Horn von Afrika weiss man nichts Genaues: Die Wildesel im nördlichen Afrika gehören wohl zu den bedrohtesten Tierarten überhaupt, denn die politischen Wirren am Horn von Afrika machen die Wüstengebiete und Gebirge sehr unsicher: Die Waffen in der Region werden nicht nur in den Konflikten, sondern auch für Jagd und Wilderei eingesetzt. Dies hat die Wildesel, von denen alle Hausesel abstammen, an den Rand der Ausrottung gebracht. Vor diesem Hintergrund sind Wildesel, die in Gehegen gehalten und gezüchtet werden, äusserst kostbar. «NETZ NATUR» blickt 7000 Jahre zurück – in die Zeit, als der Mensch den Esel zu sich holte. Wie kamen die Menschen überhaupt dazu, wilde Esel zu zähmen? Und welche Voraussetzungen brachte der Esel mit, dass Zähmung und Züchtung gelangen? «NETZ NATUR» zeigt die rauen Sitten, die bei den Wildeseln gepflegt werden. Die Spurensuche führt aber nicht nur zu den Wildeseln, sondern auch zu den Hauseseln der Nomanden Eritreas und zu den Bauern Ägyptens, die ihre Haustiere heute noch wie vor vier Jahrtausenden nutzen. Es ist wohl das Unglück des Esels, dass er aufgrund seines eher rabiaten Soziallebens hart ist im Nehmen. Obwohl er den Menschen viel Nutzen bringt und die Pharaonen ihre Reichtümer in langen Eselkarawanen aus dem Inneren Afrikas holten, galt der Esel als Symboltier des Seth, eines mächtigen und gewalttätigen Gottes der alten Ägypter, der am Rande der geordneten Welt herrscht. Weil bei ihnen Tritte und Schläge zum Alltag gehören, leisten sie auch unter schlechter Behandlung des Menschen geduldig, was von ihnen verlangt wird und tragen Lasten, die ihr eigenes Körpergewicht übersteigen. Griechen und Römer brachten die nützlichen Haustiere, die sich nur in trockenem Kilma wirklich wohl fühlen, nach Westen. In Südeuropa, wo sie bis in die heutige Zeit in der Landwirtschaft eine wichtige Rolle spielten: Vielerorts war die ganze Landwirtschaft auf den Eseltransport ausgerichtet. «NETZ NATUR» zeigt, wie die Zeit der Esel auf der Insel Kreta zur Neige geht und wie sie während Jahrhunderten für das ökologische Gleichgewicht einer Kulturlandschaft sorgten, das jetzt durch die Finanzspritzen der EU zerstört wird. In der Schweiz gab es seit der Römerzeit nur wenige «reine» Esel – hier war vor allem das Maultier, die unfruchtbare Kreuzung zwischen Eselhengst und Pferdestute gefragt: Als geländegängiges Tragtier für Händler, Säumer und Militärs im Gebirge, als Zugtier vor leichten Wagen und als Reittier für die Geistlichkeit in den Alpen. Als reine Esel machten vor allem geduldige Mülleresel und geheimnisvolle Schmuggleresel Karriere in unseren Breiten. Und heute sind die geduldigen Grauen und Schwarzen zu eigentlichen Publikumslieblingen geworden: Mit ihrem Charme und ihrer Genügsamkeit haben sie viele Menschen für sich eingenommen und sind zu Tausenden zu Hobbytieren und Biorasenmähern geworden.

Well folks, that's another great year in the bag! 2018 was a busy one for Passionate DJ, and like we do at the end of each year, we looked back and reflected on everything that made it special. In this New Year's celebration show, we start out by having a look at some interesting stats including what the most popular episodes were, and which countries had the most listeners. We then have a look at all the “firsts” of this year. For example, we finally started making video versions of the podcast, and started our bonus show for supporters. (https://patreon.com/passionatedj). We also started The Passionate DJ Community on Facebook… which was one of the best decisions we ever made. Interacting with the fans in a more direct way has been both enjoyable and helpful… and we love learning more about what you do as a DJ. Per usual, we check in with lots of friends of the show. Happy New Year, and all our best to you and yours for 2018, from the Passionate DJ Team! Strap in, because we're going to go over the industry happenings of 2017, the gear no one could stop talking about, and the stuff our team did throughout the year. We'll also cover some of our favorite moments on the show over the last year, allude to what's on the horizon for us in 2018, and even take a crack at our clairvoyance skills and see if we can speculate what to expect in the next year. Of course, the big buzz this year was all about the financial and structural integrity of Soundcloud, as a company. Between Chance the Rapper and some former executives from Vimeo getting involved, Soundcloud seems to be sticking around, but things seemed pretty grim, for a while. Did Denon convince any of you to #ChangeYourRider? They've been the talk of the hardware circles, all year. Love it or hate it, they are coming out swinging against Pioneer, feature-wise...but it's hard to compete with the tenure and relationship Pioneer DJ has with DJs in booths all over the world. This past year was no time to rest, for the PDJ team. We all attended the Dayton Record Fair, which we've all agreed is one of our new staple events. And, even though most of us didn't see quite as many gigs as we'd like in 2017, we all reflected back to what we were able to do and use that as fuel to push even harder in 2018. For Tony, it's all about the next stage and the next adventure, but this year 3DMentional put on his birthday show titled "Another Trip Around The Sun", where they were able to bring the one & only Sasha to little ole Dayton, Ohio. Mo has been tearing up the highways traveling for his sons' football games. Trip tore his ACL and had to have surgery, but didn't let that slow him down (much). David reflects back on doing direct support for Sasha with great pride and excitement, but now yearns for more of that feeling behind the decks. The team also goes over some of our favorite show moments of 2017, including the LIVE video stream of Episode 100, changing our intro theme music, our interviews with DJ Craze and Mixed in Key, as well as DJ Crazy (no relation) from Mo's visit to grandma's in Jamaica. Today's episode covers a lot of ground! After David gives some updates on his personal DJ setup (an eBay shipment arrived!) and talks about why he's making those changes, the conversation moves into the realm of 3 and 4-deck mixing. A listener calls in to the show, expressing confusion about the purpose of having more than 2 decks. We discuss some of the reasons people do this (both for utility and for artistic reasons), but ultimately land on the resolution that 2-deck mixing is appropriate for most scenarios. In this week's episode, we are joined by our friend Kilma! Episode 64 is all about the issues and concerns which women often experience as DJs, or in the “EDM Industry”. Kilma chats with David about several issues which she's observed in the scene: Denial - The ability for people to admit there's a problem. “If I don't experience, see it, witness it… it doesn't happen.” or “Well I know a girl that says it doesn't exist.” Lack of Empathy - “If you want to be treated as an equal, deal with it.” Complete Dismissal/Questioning Experience - “You think you had a bad day, wait until you hear about mine.” Complaints not taken seriously, constantly questioned on whether they may have “brought the situation onto themselves.” Fear - Afraid to be boycotted, not taken seriously and even more harshly harassed many stay silent on current issues. So what are some possible solutions to these issues? Kilma offers some suggestions: Acknowledge there is an issue - Everyone needs to acknowledge this is happening! Just like racism or homophobia. Just because YOU aren't experiencing something doesn't mean other people aren't or that it's not a huge issue. Call Out The Behavior - Support one another. If you see bullying you call it out. If you see sexism, call it out. Stick up for those around you! Ask Questions - As someone experiencing or even being an ally it can be difficult to stay calm when hearing complete ignorance, but that can also be great way to open up dialogue to make others aware and question one's motives. Become An Ally - Men are a very important part of the solution. Unfortunately sometime's it's not until a guy says it, that another guy hears it. Educate Yourself - Learn about the history of sexism, where it stems from, how it's alive and well today, review the stats and studies about the effects on inequality and listen to the stories of those experiencing it. This week, @Tony-DeSaro and @TripTurlington take some time off while David gets caught up with @KilmaMusic. The first warning sign that a project is in trouble, often, is that little twinge where we begin to search for excuses. You know what I'm talking about: that pre-loading of responses that our brain begins to compile, just in case. We think, “I can start doing this, and if it doesn't work out the way I want it to, I can blame it on… [blank]”. Some people even have “one size fits all” excuses, which they can pull out of their back pocket at any time. “I was a middle child”, “I'm a Virgo”, or “the deck is stacked against me”. We often do this without even realizing it, so that we have a rapid-fire response in case someone or something challenges our status, or lack of progress. Our brains can often seem to be in a constant state of excuse-refinement. We never want to be under-prepared. We feel much more comforted, and in control, if we have a ready-made excuse when the bill collector calls or the police officer pulls you over. The big problem here is that it serves as a constant reminder of all the factors in our lives that are out of our control. Excuses, even valid ones, can often lend themselves to self-fulfilled prophecy. It allows us to be complacent. For example, we don't have the time, so we don't make the time. So, how can we avoid having an excuse-driven life? As DJs, how can we push forward, in spite of the hurdles that we come up against? Resources mentioned in this episode include: - Kilma's (awesome!) It is the summer and once again the NaschyCast hears the call of the wild....jungle wild, that is! Yes- it's time for a Jungle Girl romp through the foliage and the stock footage as we ogle untamed women in fur bikinis and indulge in adolescent fantasies about the fairer sex. Will we ever grow up? Probably not. But while we stumble through the faux African landscape we do talk about this odd but oddly entertaining Naschy effort that marks his first collaboration with the director of THE NIGHT OF THE HOWLING BEAST a.k.a. THE WEREWOLF AND THE YETI. I have to admit that when we covered that film back in episode three I was unaware of this movie so this show serves as proof that Troy and I are still learning about our favorite Spanish Wolfman even now. Think of these podcasts as the strangest series of film history classes of all time! Now I just need to watch the Kilma sequel and see what director Miguel Iglesias brought to the table for a second Jungle Girl film with Blanca Estrada. We start the show with a few announcements of interest to fans of Spanish Horror and are only interrupted once by a vicious catfight - I guess that is progress, of a sort. The mailbag segment has us being questioned by a female listener who has finally chimed in and wants info on the TV horror host of our youth.
