In this long-overdue episode, Mark is joined by the brilliant Helen Daniel, who is a qualified teacher, sensory mentor, public speaker and founder of Outside the Box Sensory, as they dig into the myriad challenges of early years education and what it means for our neurodivergent kids. Helen brings a unique perspective not only as a parent of an autistic child (diagnosed autistic, suspected ADHD), but also as a late-diagnosed autistic ADHD-er herself, and a former teacher who's seen the system from the inside out. Together, she and Mark pick apart the weird rituals, unrealistic milestones and baffling expectations of primary school - and why it often ends up being a really poor fit for neurodivergent kids. From sensory overload and academic gaslighting to the slow-burning isolation that builds in the school playground (for kids and parents alike), this one is jam-packed with insight, shared experiences and the usual healthy dose of humorous venting. ⸻ STUFF WE COVER: 00:00 – Intro & Listener Message 01:45 – Meet the Guest: Helen Daniel 06:00 – Topic of the Week: Early Years & School 21:00 – Sensory Profiles and Unrealistic Expectations 34:00 – ND Communication Styles & Social Hierarchies 47:00 – Parent Isolation and Drop-Off Struggles 56:30 – School Pickup Dread & Neurodivergent Burnout 1:03:00 – What Needs to Change in Education 1:04:45 – Neurodiversity Champions 1:09:00 – Tiny Epic Wins 1:14:00 – What the Flip? Lois, the daughter of an old friend John Miles and past podcast guest, actor Aimee Miles, has herself been acting for a decade, with roles in commercials, voice work, and a lineup of school and community theater. Currently, she's playing a teenage vampire in A Sign You Were Alive at Murphy's Creek Theatre in Northern California. We dive into her experiences growing up around actors, her ambitions, and what she finds most fun about being a young actor.   John, Lois's father, is an actor and a concert promoter known as the unofficial “Godfather of Silent Disco”—he essentially invented it! We reminisce about our days working together and discuss how John's theater background paved the way for his entrepreneurial success.   So, lock your doors and turn down the lights… it's the spooktacular Halloween episode of Offstage Acting!   ※=※=※=※=※=※=※=※=※=※=※

Episode 425 – What Recovery Pathway is Right for Me?   Today we have Doug. He is 59, from Buena Vista, CO and he took his last drink on July 28, 1982.   Join Recovery Elevator in Atlanta over Memorial Day weekend for a fun conference style meet up at the Marriott in Alpharetta.  This event is all about getting your connect on and it will be a fun time.  Spouses or loved ones are encouraged to attend the Sunday night event and Silent Disco afterwards!   [2:30] Thoughts from Paul:   When building your recovery portfolio, a good goal is 50% external and 50% internal. At first, the internal work may be too big of an ask, but as your nervous system settles down, you want to aim for a balanced split. Here are some quick examples of what I mean when I say external vs internal:   External: Driving to an AA meeting, or hopping on a Café RE zoom chat Phoning a sober friend Working with a sponsor   Internal: Meditation Journaling Reading Quit-Lit   When building out your recovery I recommend this 5-tiered approach: 1. Community – AA, SMART, Café RE, therapy, sober friends. Burn the Ships! 2. Action/Movement – Chemicals of wellbeing, endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin are released when we move.   3. Inner Peace – Meditation, breathwork, creative ventures, writing, time in nature. 4. Knowledge – Podcasts, Quit-Lit, learning about new things in and out of recovery. 5. Universe – This is not religion, but it is the spiritual component of recovery.   Better Help:  www.betterhelp.com/elevator - 10% off your first month. #sponsored           [11:55] Paul introduces Doug:   Doug had his last drink on July 28th, 1982, when he was 19 years old. He lives in Buena Vista, CO and is married and they have two adult children. He has worked in upholstery, cabinet building and installations, and has built some houses with his son. He enjoys the mountains, biking and riding his motorcycle.   Doug grew up in a normal family and wasn't exposed to heavy drinking. His first experience with alcohol was when he was 4 years old when he remembers having a few sips of his mother's drink. He felt the warm glow and really liked it. Later when he was 12, a friend of his stole a bottle of liquor from his parents and while his friends were mixing it with soft drinks, Doug drank straight from the bottle. He felt something click – suddenly, he felt normal, and like everyone else.   When Doug was 16 his mother passed away and the drinking escalated and continued to be excessive after graduation. Some friends invited him to Alateen meetings, and he started attending weekly. Once a month AA members would come in and share their stories. He started identifying with some of the stories which got him to start question his drinking. He realized that he was becoming less like the person that he wanted to be.   When one of his former drinking friends disappeared from the meetings, he found out that they were working on sobriety with AA. That friend was a speaker at one of the meetings, and Doug noticed that they looked healthy and at peace. He chose to speak to him afterwards and expressed an interest in possibly attending AA but wasn't quite ready for it.   Doug finally accepted the invitations to attend and was planning to go to a meeting on July 29th. The night before he found himself drinking and when he saw himself in a mirror started asking himself why he was drinking. He didn't have a good answer for that.   AA has been a big tool for Doug, along with volunteer work. He knows that if he had continued drinking, he would not have had the life he has. He believes in counting blessings, finding things to be grateful for and putting sobriety before everything else.   Cafe RE  Use the promo code OPPORTUNITY to waive the set-up fee. Have you ever observed individuals dancing without any audible music but sporting illuminated headphones? If so, you have witnessed a silent disco, which has been in existence for a while and is now gaining popularity. By donning headphones, one can concentrate on the music and enjoy a high-quality experience. How will this silent disco have the time of your life at your next event? In this unique episode, we are joined by the esteemed Founder & CEO of CiferNoise Productions, Jason Gorley, who shares his insightful thoughts on silent disco. He navigates through the potential of this innovative technology, providing a brief historical background, and highlighting how it creates a distinct connection among people through the power of music.  Tune in to discover the many dimensions of silent disco and how it is transforming the way we experience music. --- Listen to the podcast here: Exploring the World of Silent Disco with Jason Gorley Welcome to Action's Antidotes, your antidote to the mindset that keeps you settling for less. For most of my life, I've had these competing pursuits of wanting to kind of foster people's individuality but also build community at the same time and one of the problems I encountered was I'd always thought of these particular pursuits as competing with one another, you're either becoming more close but becoming less individual or going in the opposite direction. My guest today is Jason Gorley of CiferNoise Productions and what they do is they do silent discos, which is one of the areas where I've seen people allow people to have an individual experience while also coming together.   --- Jason, welcome to the program.   Hey, thanks for having me.   Yeah, no problem. Yeah, thank you for coming on. Yeah, describe the silent disco experience and what motivated you to kind of bring this into the world.   Thanks for asking. A lot of things motivated me to bring this into the world but let's start with silence disco is it's a unique experience that anyone can travel down with headphones but also, it's not just wearing headphones, it's having the options to choose what you're listening to at a particular event. So, silent disco can have three all the way up to ten channels and each channel can be curated in a way to fit the demographic that is present within your event or any pop-up in general. You could do multiple things from movie nights to conferences to regular parties and it's just a different way of replacing speakers and creating more of an immersive experience with your ears. How I got into it, I went to a school that partied a lot and I loved throwing parties. University of Arizona, bear down.   Oh, yeah, that is known for its party atmosphere, for sure.   Yeah, yeah, we do party a lot down there, especially those who don't even go to college. I always had a knack of wanting to bring people together. The greatest thing is just watching people smile after they leave your events. I've always been a people person or gathering people together and putting them in little areas for them to hang out in. So, when I got into my adulthood life, more 30s, leaving the telecom industry, I wanted to find something more invigorating, I guess one would say, and I tell people I got into this on a push from an ex-girlfriend and a cover letter. So that's a really good punch line.   A push from an ex-girlfriend, and a cover letter. Now, I don't know about anyone listening but I usually don't think of cover letters as leading to anything fun. It's one of the BS processes, or parts of the job finding process so you have to tell me about how an ex-girlfriend push and a cover letter brought you too silent disco.   Yeah, just like everything else in this world, you got to start from the bottom. I guess during that time in my life and it's starting to get more look far off in the past, yeah, she was the one that encouraged me to or pushed me to be like,

Producers Ryan and Katerina report on what makes a show or concert accessible to the deaf community and they look at, and try on, some technology from Music: Not Impossible that could help make attending concerts and experiencing music more accessible. Music Not Impossible created what they call “Haptic Suits,” specifically designed for the deaf and hard of hearing. The suits are used to translate music into vibrations that people can then feel throughout their entire body, which can provide a greater connection to music for deaf and hard of hearing communities, and break down barriers between hearing and deaf concert-goers. They spoke with a number of guests about this cutting-edge technology that's making the experience of music accessible for all. Guests: Jeff Rosen, who is a Grateful Dead fan, and a Deafhead (which is what people who are deaf and also Grateful Dead fans, call themselves). Jeff was also the Chairman of the National Council on Disability under the Obama Administration and is now the general legal counsel for a company called Convo Communications LLC. We spoke to Jeff about the history of accessibility at Grateful Dead shows and what it means to have an accessible concert or venue.   Paddy Hanlon is a co-founder of Music: Not Impossible and a Vibro DJ. He gave our producers a demo of their Haptic Suits at Nublu 151 in the East Village, New York.    Alberto Madero, an ASL sign language interpreter, and his mother Merry Cuascut (Alberto interpreted for his mother), about their experience trying on Music: Not Impossible's Haptic Suits at Lincoln Center's Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra this summer.   Shelly Guy through an ASL interpreter about her experience trying on Music: Not Impossible's Haptic Suits at Lincoln Center's "An Evening of Access Magic
" at their Silent Disco this summer. Shelly is a director of Community Engagement and Events Coordinator and the Director of Artistic Sign Language for Body Language Productions. She is also a performer and a deaf interpreter and works very closely with a non-profit organization called Up Until Now Collective.
