The 26-year-old Flanagan has forced his way into the consciousness of Athletics Canada's Olympic team selection committee by posting solid results across in the 5,000m and 10,000m this year. Most recently, Flanagan set a new 5,000m PB of 13:20 at Tracksmith's Platinum PT qualifier in Boston last week, winning the race in the process. Ben and I talked about how he hopes to punch his ticket to Tokyo, high mileage vs low mileage, Ben's fascination with Utah, what it felt like to beat Ben True, and more.

Today's guest on The XC Podcast is Canadian marathon record holder and Hoka One One athlete Cameron Levins. Last week, some would have called the best Canadian athlete without Olympic standard. Then, on Sunday, with just a week remaining in the Olympic marathon qualification period, that changed. Between raindrops and nine time zones away from his residence in Portland Oregon, Levins won the S7 marathon in Loipersdorf, Austria in a time of 2:10:14 - comfortably under Olympic standard of 2:11:30. In this episode the 32-year-old takes Alex Cyr through his latest race in great detail, he shares the wise advice American track star Jenny Simpson gave him back in 2012, and at one point he admits to having a soft spot for Korean dramas.

Last week, amid a recent spike in COVID-19 cases in Japan, reports in The Times of London stated that the Japan government privately concluded that the 2021 Olympic games be cancelled due to the Coronavirus. That led to immediate pushback from the IOC and Japan's own Olympic committee, and the Japanese government, which called the reports “categorically untrue.” Organizers and I.O.C. officials have said that no further postponement is possible and that if the Games do not proceed in the summer of 2021 they will be canceled, which would be the first time the Games have been scrubbed since World War II. The narrative over the past week has been that we all can't wait to just flush 2020 down the metaphorical toilet and move on with our collective lives into 2021, which can't possibly be worse than what we just went through. This would suggest that in making a year-end wrap-up list of "winners and losers" that the latter category would be remarkably easy to assemble, while identifying those who "won 2020" a touch tricky. Certainly, we all lost in a sense in 2020 (don't worry, we cover that). But a number of people (and companies) thrived in these uncertain times. We unpack how and why certain runners and brands somehow "won the Pandemic," while others struggled (and one in particular downright failed its people). Last weekend, six Canadians travelled to Chandler, AZ to race in The Marathon Project, each with the goal of running fast enough to eventually be named to the 2021 Olympic team. As the qualification deadline of May 31 approaches, and as an increasing number of spring races get cancelled, Sunday's race was seen as an indispensable opportunity to run faster than the Olympic standards of 2:11:30 and 2:29:30. No Canadian took better advantage of it than Ben Preisner and Natasha Wodak, our two guests on this episode. Wodak raced to fifth place and a personal best time of 2:26:19. It's the second fastest time in Canadian history and, for now, it's probably enough to secure the Team Canada's third roster spot (for a full breakdown of how a runner can qualify for Canada's Olympic marathon team, follow this link.) In the first segment of this podcast, Wodak - the Canadian 10,000m record holder who had not raced a marathon since 2013 - talks to Michael Doyle about the overcoming the fear and uncertainty of that last 10K in a marathon, and holding it together to do something extraordinary. Afterwards, Alex Cyr talks with Ben Preisner, the 24-year-old first-time marathoner who shocked nearly everyone by posting an eighth place finish and the fourth-fastest marathon ever run by a Canadian. His time of 2:10:17 also makes him the second fastest Canadian runner this Olympic period behind only Trevor Hofbauer. How The Marathon Project Came Together, with Organizer and Coach Ben Rosario

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 17, 2020 27:35

Over the course of the summer, as team sports figured out a way to safely get back playing games, NAZ Elite coach Ben Rosario realized that the distance running community needed to become proactive. With mass participation races being cancelled across the world, Rosario's athletes needed a goal, particularly runners like Scott Fauble and Kellyn Taylor, who missed qualifying for the U.S. Olympic team, but wanted another shot at a marathon before the end of 2020. Another one of Rosario's athletes, Canadian Rory Linkletter, was also in an interesting situation — he needed an opportunity to run a high-quality, sanctioned marathon in the hope that he would qualify for his national Olympic team next summer. Rosario saw an opportunity to set up a special, elite-only race. It would give his athletes and others something to strive for at the end of one very bad year, and perhaps provide an opportunity for a few international elites to qualify for the Olympics. In a text to friend and agent Josh Cox, The Marathon Project concept was born. The XC's Michael Doyle talks with Rosario about how the race came together, how big a deal the event has become to both North American elite distance runners and the community as a whole, the importance of making a marathon entertaining, and why he thinks something special is going to happen on Sunday. Our guest today is Kinsey Middleton, the 2018 Canadian marathon champion who trains out of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. This weekend, she hopes to better her PB of 2:32:09 and earn a spot on Team Canada at the 2021 Tokyo Games. The team will be hard to crack for the 28-year-old, as four Canadian women already have Olympic standard. But Middleton is a proven performer. Just two years ago, she surprised everyone — and maybe even herself — by winning her first-ever Canadian marathon title. Since then, however, there have been ups and downs: she PB'd in the half-marathon earlier this year, but then she got shoulder surgery and had to spend most of the summer in recovery mode. Despite that, Middleton now appears to be in the best shape of her life, and has flirted with 2:26 marathon pace in recent workouts. Here, she talks about recovering from surgery, rushing through a marathon build, and why she thinks Canadian women are running faster than ever. And when Canada pulled its team on the eve of the race due to concerns over health safety, Kent hit Vancouver's iconic Seawall and ran 62 minutes for 21.1K. That's when he and his coach started thinking about the marathon — and about the 2021 Olympics. Kent chats with host Michael Doyle about what he anticipates from his first-ever marathon, which will be one of the strangest debut experiences a runner could ever have. It's probably going to be the fastest North American marathon of 2020, and it happens on Sunday, Dec. 20. Our guest today is Ben Preisner, a recent NCAA alumnus turned elite half-marathoner. The 24-year-old started hitting his stride right around the time that the world shut down. A 63:08 half-marathon in the fall of 2019 got him a spot at the 2020 London Marathon, but when the race was postponed, he decided to test his fitness the old fashion way - with a time trial. His solo 2:15:24 marathon debut turned many heads, and this weekend, he finally gets to test his fitness in an official setting. Our first guest is Rory Linkletter, a 24-year-old Canadian-American, and second-time marathoner. Last fall, he raced to a 2:16:42 in his marathon debut. Linkletter, a professional runner for Hoka One One and NAZ Elite, hopes to dip under the Olympic standard of 2:11:30 on Sunday. That sounds like a stretch, until you consider that he's run the second fastest half-marathon in Canadian history earlier this year in 61:44, and it's clear from his Strava profile that he is ready to run much faster than 2:16. Here, Linkletter tells us what The Marathon Project is all about - he lives in Flagstaff, so he has the inside scoop. We also chat about his preparation for the race, his decision to let his hair grow until he makes an Olympic team - it's already down to his shoulders - and his experience living with fellow Canadian Olympic hopeful Cam Levins for 5 weeks this fall. Two Future Olympians on Quarantine Training Together in a Cabin In the Woods

Today Alex Cyr is joined by two fit, restless, potential future Olympians. John Gay has represented Canada in three separate international competitions since early 2019, including the world athletics championships in Doha late last year in the 3,000m steeplechase — that's especially impressive considering the world has been shut down for nine of these past 24 months. Kieran Lumb is the 2019 Canadian U Sports cross-country champion, and as of February, the Canadian U-23 record holder in the indoor 3,000m. Both were in great fitness when COVID sent the world into lockdown in March, so they decided to essentially quarantine together in a cabin to keep some sort of momentum going. Just last week, they got to prove their post-lockdown fitness over 10,000m, where Lumb stopped the clock at 28:17, and Gay at 28:18. Both trailed the winner, 2016 Olympian Luc Bruchet, by milliseconds. Today John, Kieran and I talked about that race, but also about venturing into the world of professional running, about dealing with a busy school schedule, about making a push for the Olympics, and at one point, John tells his dad that he loves him. Really sweet listen until the end. I had fun recording this conversation, and I hope you enjoy.

    Malindi Elmore's Secret Shoe Experiment

Back in March, Canada's fastest female marathoner, Malindi Elmore, wanted to know if any shoe could deliver the results that the Nike Vaporfly Next% was producing for runners around the world. Nike's controversial new design included a carbon plate and super light foam that was helping runners lop minutes off their marathon times, including Eliud Kipchoge's marathon world record. But Elmore had no allegiance to the Swoosh, and as a free agent she wanted to know if other brands could actually compete. Elmore had just set Canadian national record of 2:24 in the Vaporfly, but wasn't sponsored by Nike (and was actually buying the shoes herself in order to gain the benefit they provided). As COVID was shutting down the world around her, she quietly took her Nikes into a lab along with a new carbon plated competitor by Saucony, called the Endrophin Pro, in order to see if any other shoe could match the Vaporfly. The results will no doubt change many minds about which shoes to wear for that first post-pandemic breakthrough marathon. Host Michael Doyle talks with Elmore about her curious experiment.
