“That's what I was telling myself the whole time. I was just so committed to racing as hard as I can, and I was just like, ‘I think I can compete with those guys.' I had that mindset the whole race. I was like, ‘I don't care if I get fourth, I don't even care if I get second or third and don't get to go.' It was about conquering the disbelief that I've had the last few years that I could compete with those guys. So that was the plan.” Drew Hunter, 4th place finisher in the U.S. Olympic Trials 10,000m final, reflects on his performance last night, shares about the support he's received since racing, what he's learned since becoming a dad, and gives a few updates on Tinman Elite. Emerging professional runner and new member of Tinman Elite out of Boulder, Colorado, Katie Camarena tells the story of how it all went down from her viewpoint racing in the 2024 USATF Cross-Country National Championships, which took place January 20, 2024, in Richmond, VA. On the line at this race, in addition to a national championship title, cash awards and series points, racers were vying for a spot on Team USA going to the Cross Country World Championships, which will take place March 30 in Belgrade, Serbia. There was a lot on the line! This is Katie's first championship race as a member of her first professional team and shortly after moving to Boulder, so the pressure was on. Katie is a relatively recent college grad. She graduated in 2022. Katie started off her NCAA running career racing for UCSB, the University of California at Santa Barbara, and she finished her collegiate career racing for a short time for Portland State University, in Portland, OR. Post-graduation, Katie was introduced to seasoned pro and Olympian Colleen Quigley, whose terrific support brought Katie into an outstanding crowd of professional runners in the pro running hub of Flagstaff, AZ. While there, she trained and learned and solidified her determination to race as a pro. After some ups and downs, but steadily building her race ability and speed, Katie landed a spot on Tinman. This race is a terrific culmination of patience, belief, support, and determination. Just like last year, you can expect to a Race Report episode for each race of the USATF Road Circuit series of races. Each episode features one top 10 runner telling the story of how the race went down, from her perspective. And because a race is never just about what happens on race day, you will get to know a little bit more about each one of the runners featured and how this race figures into their larger running story. The USATF Cross-Country National Championships is a part of the USATF Running Circuit championship series of races. These are races that happen throughout the United States all year long and each race serves as a national championship for the distance or the type of race that is being run. Also, at each one of these races, in addition to vying for a national title, runners earn cash prizes and they earn points. And of course all of that is dependent on where they finish. The points go toward the series overall, which is determined at the end of the year. This year, like in years past, the series will finish off in November at the 5k National Championships, which happen in New York City as part of the New York City Marathon Weekend of events. This was the first race of the circuit in 2024. The next race on the circuit is the 15k National Championships taking place in Jacksonville, Florida on March 2nd. A WRS Race Report will publish shortly thereafter. Be sure to subscribe to the podcast so you don't miss it! Way back in November 2021 when this show was just getting off the ground, we did an episode with Sam Parsons - a professional runner and cofounder of the Tinman Elite team based in Boulder, CO. At the time, I was surprised that we had not seen the formation and widespread existence of a truly professionalized, co-located team in the trail running world. So I reached out, he gave me an hour, and I tried to fit in as many questions as I could about how they operate, what's worked, what hasn't, and what it would take to create something similar in our community.I have never done an episode re-run before, but I'm doing it now because (a) it's been over 2 years and we're in a similar position to where we were in 2021, (b) the show didn't have many listeners when the original episode aired so there was little to no reach for the message, and (c) this re-run may queue up a potential part 2 later this winter.Lastly, I'm well aware of the unique challenges that our sport presents for this idea to work, but I'm still convinced it's a good idea. So, I hope that in the coming months and years a band of motivated people run with this idea and make something happen. Today on the podcast, I gladly welcome Drew Hunter. This is a podcast I've wanted to make happen since the origins of the podcast. Drew became the eighth-ever high schooler in high school to break the illustrious four-minute barrier clocking 3:58.25 (a national record). Drew then signed with Adidas out of high school and founded Tinman Elite, where he has pushed forward the sport of running on and off the track. Drew currently holds PRs of 3:34.86 (1500m), 3:54.8 (mile), 7:39.85 (3k), and 13:17.55 (5k). He has also won two US national titles. Off the track, Drew is a recent husband, father, coach, and occasional Youtube star (more Cooking With Drew, please, Max). In this conversation, Drew and I dive deep into his career and many subjects surrounding his life. Drew is a perspicacious and ebullient speaker, and I enjoyed this conversation immensely. I know our discussion will positively impact you, and I hope you'll take the time to listen to it. You can listen wherever you find your podcasts by searching, "The Running Effect Podcast." Austin Miller might just be the best distance runner you've never heard of. Just a few weeks ago, the Sioux Falls native joined the list of American sub-4 milers, running 3:57.9 at the Boston Terrier Classic to break the four minute barrier for the first time. Austin, who was a multiple time All American at Augustana and now runs professionally for Tinman Elite, has his sights set on running fast and achieving big goals. Austin's story is a testament of why to always bet on yourself, and you'll get to hear how he's doing that each day on the professional scene.

Sydney Gidabuday is an American distance running specializing in distances from 3000m to half marathon with sights on the full marathon soon! Sydney threw himself into the spotlight during his time running with Tinman Elite and has recently switched over to Roots Running with some other big names in running. I was excited about this one as it feels like I haven't heard as much from or about Sydney as I'd like! This was a fun and insightful conversation with a lot of bases covered. * Running origins * Running taught lessons on goal setting * Struggling to find the motivation within after become a professional runner * Making the move from Tinman to Roots Running * Running w/ Altra Running shoes * Preventing burnout and shifting perspective * Next races: Houston Half to Marathon Trials in 24' Sydney if you're reading this…best if luck to you this year! Please keep inspiring us and running bravely! Thanks for sharing more of your story.
On the podcast today is the one and only Jesse Williams. Jesse first came on my podcast almost two years ago (November 25, 2020) and since that first conversation, I've been incredibly fascinated with him and his ideas for our sport. If I could appoint a commissioner of track and field, it would be Jesse. Every few months it seems, Jesse is putting on another world-class meet. On December 1, the Fitness Bank Cross Champs will take place in Austin, Texas. Teams like the OAC, Brooks Beast, Tinman Elite, NAZ Elite, TaylorMade Elite, U.S. Army WCAP, and many more! Needless to say, this race is absolutely stacked and there are many storylines going into it. In today's episode, Jesse and I discuss the Fitness Banks Cross Champs, best ways to market our sport, running past celebrities, bold predications for NCAAs, and much more. It's always a pleasure to talk with Jesse and always a thoughtful conversation. I hope you all enjoy this conversation as much we did! "I'll never forget one race, one of my best 5km races was last year at Payton Jordan (2019) and that was when I was really at the height of my mindfulness practise. I was meditating every day - I would wake up and meditate for 10 minutes, I was so aware of what I was doing and how I was feeling throughout the day through mindfulness. I would meditate at night. There was so many moments in that race where I wanted to give up, I was not in shape to run 13:22 for 5km that day, hell no! But I kept giving myself opportunities. I kept giving myself opportunities to keep pushing. Every moment I wanted to give up and let off the pace and let that gap open up I just gave myself one more step, I gave myself one more breath, and I just kept going and going. I kept telling myself that this pain that I'm going through, it's okay, it's not something that I possess, it's just something that's there. It's not a part of me, it's just something that is present currently and that was the huge breakthrough for me. I was like "Holy shit, if I can learn to continue to breath through things, I can push myself to a whole new pain tolerance and to a whole new place that I never knew I could get to before." Sam Parsons (Tinman Elite) is back on the Sweat Elite Podcast to discuss everything mindfulness with Sweat Elite's Tait Hearps. "You can achieve these certain states of being through running. Running can be such a meditative endeavour. It can be a way to free yourself from darkness, anxiety, stress, whatever it may be. Running is an escape for a lot of people. That hour that you head out your door can be the best hour of your day. It can be the one hour where you're not stressing about the test you have the take, or the work that you didn't do or whatever might be coming up. Learning to take moments in your day just to breathe. I always had this huge misconception with it." -- -- SUBSCRIBE to Sweat Elite to gain access to all content: www.sweatelite.co/subscribe-now Right now you can subscribe annually and score a 5km, 10km, Half Marathon or Marathon specialised training plan.

“Coach said: “Do you know why we aren't doing a tempo run today? When you do a tempo run, guess what you do? You get locked into the same form that I don't want you to run in right now. You're training for a 5km and a 1500m. When you're training for those races, I want you on your toes. I want you feeling good, I want your chest up, I want your arms back. If I give you ten four minute reps, you're going to rest and you're going to attack going into each one of those reps. You're going to get in that stride that I want you to be in today. If I give you a 6-mile tempo run, you're going to lock into 5 minute (mile) pace, get on your heels, hunch over by the end of it and you're going to look like shit. You're going to feel great because you did that last mile in 4:55, but it's not going to be accomplishing what I want you to accomplish today. You're going to be firing a totally different muscle group that I want you to be firing today.” At that moment, I realised that I just needed to shut up and trust him.” Sam Parsons is a professional distance runner for Tinman Elite and Adidas. His tastes better, but he probably uses 95% of the same ingredients. He uses flour, he uses spices – the same as the other trained chef. But he knows how much to put in, when to put it in and at what temperature. That's the difference. As a coach, i'm constantly refining my skills and knowledge. I constantly hold the belief that I don't know enough.” Tinman Elite Head Coach – Tom Schwartz – joins the Sweat Elite podcast this week. This is a long episode, but it will not disappoint. Tom has over 30 years of middle/long distance coaching experience. Tom has developed dozens of NCAA DI runners, national champions, and national record holders. Tom coaches runners from youth to masters, across every distance and platform of running from the track, road, and trail. His training philosophy can be distilled into one phrase: “Keep the ball rolling.” Consistent, tough, healthy, and smart training in order to feel your best year-round. Tom holds a Bachelors degree in Exercise Science, Master's degree in Human Performance and is currently pursuing his PhD in Health & Human Performance. In addition, Tom holds a Master's of Business Administration degree and has obtained the highest level of certifications in both USATF (Level 3 Endurance) and World Athletics Association (Level 5 Elite Endurance Coaching).
