Send us a text#134 - Are you struggling to stay motivated with your running routine? The secret might not be a new training plan or fancy gear, but rather the power of community. In this episode, we sit down with Kayla and Jarrod Zwirko, founders of H2gO Run Club, to explore how running communities can transform your running journey and help you achieve goals you never thought possible. From their transformation from non-runners to marathoners to building an inclusive running community that welcomes "all paces and faces," Kayla and Jarrod share valuable insights about the importance of connection, accountability, and support. This conversation highlights how finding your running community might be the most critical step in your running journey.Topics Covered:How community accountability helps runners stay consistent and push beyond their perceived limitationsThe importance of avoiding comparison with other runnersBuilding an inclusive running space that welcomes everyone from complete beginners to experienced marathonersHow running communities provide both the initial inspiration to start and the ongoing motivation to continueToday's GuestsKayla Zwirko Kayla's running journey began in 2020, inspired by her husband, Jarrod. After an unexpected opportunity to run the 2022 Boston Marathon—she returned in 2023, cutting over an hour from her time. This ignited a passion that led to multiple marathons, a 50-mile ultramarathon, and a run coaching certification. Now, she coaches with NYRR, provides 1:1 coaching, emcees for the Hartford Marathon Foundation, and co-founded H2gO to inspire and connect runners. Jarrod ZwirkoJarrod started running in 2020 after being inspired by The Hole in the Wall Gang's NYC Marathon team. A former swimmer, he took on marathon training as a new challenge and has since completed seven marathons, now aiming for the World Marathon Majors. Seeking a running community, he and Kayla founded H2gO Life to connect and inspire fellow runners. H2gOH2gO is built on inclusivity, welcoming all paces and faces, and since 2023, has quickly grown through local collaborations and a wider meetup radius, showcasing our dedication to building a strong running community. Mark Milde, the race director of the BMW Berlin Marathon joins Set the Pace to talk about what it's like to race 26.2 miles through one of Germany's most storied cities. With the marathon celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, Mark has a lifetime of experience when it comes to this race because his father, Horst Milde, founded the race in 1974. This year will have a celebratory feel with lots of music along the course and a special exhibition at the Brandenburg Gate showcasing the history of the race. The past 50 years has seen dramatic change in Berlin, most notably, the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 that had divided the city. Mark's father, along with other race organizers, rerouted the course from being run entirely in West Berlin to entering parts of East Berlin, yet still maintaining the fast and flat course that it's known for. Then, the great Meb Keflezighi will be here with NYRR member and seasoned marathoner Paola Marte, and today's Meb Minute which focuses on week 7 of training for the TCS New York City Marathon.FOLLOW NYRR: Instagram | Facebook | X | TikTokSUPPORT: Support the Set the Pace podcast! "You just have to be so grateful for the races that go according to plan and where you do set a dream goal and achieve that dream goal. Nobody's written anybody's future—it's not scripted, so you have to make the most of the moments that you have in running. That can be true in any era, at any age, at any stage, and any talent level and accomplishment level. It's one of the great lessons of running." -Gordon Bakoulis Gordon Bakoulis is a 5-time Olympic Trials marathoner and one of the most accomplished runners I've had the pleasure of speaking with. Gordon qualified for the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000, & 2004 and was a finalist in the 1992 U.S. Olympic 10,000m Trials. She has represented the U.S. internationally at the 10K, half-marathon, & marathon distances, and has run a 1:11 half-marathon and a 2:33 marathon. We discussed the enormous growth in women's running, the runners who inspired her, and how much the sport has evolved. Gordon's most memorable race was the 2001 NYC Marathon, which was held less than 8 weeks after the 9/11 attacks. Gordon won the masters division in 2:41 and it was really emotional hearing her reflect on what it felt like running through her beloved, broken, yet resilient city. Gordon has also been coaching since 1985 and has worked in the media and for NYRR since 2002—which affords her a really unique perspective. I'm so grateful to Gordon for sharing so many great lessons! She's host of the Running for Real podcast, a global community with a shared love of running and co-author of the book Becoming a Sustainable Runner with Zoë Rom, and she also ran the 2023 TCS New York City Marathon with Kayleigh Williamson, the race's first known woman finisher with Down syndrome. Tina talks about how her decision to get Achilles surgery is a type of physical sustainability as it will hopefully enable her to run for many years to come. Whether she's leading a plogging event (picking up trash while jogging) for NYRR or wearing a skirt made of gel wrappers and plastic water bottles, her environmental advocacy is leading the way in the global running community. As dawn broke over the iconic New York City skyline,  she couldn't help but feel a mix of nerves and excitement—the cocktail of emotions that Ana from @Ana_Runs_on_Coffee described as she boarded the bus to the marathon starting line. Clad in mylar blankets and loaded with carb-rich strategies, she joins us for a second episode to continue recounting the pre-marathon rituals that set the stage for 26.2 miles of urban adventure. Hear how her preparation unfolded into an orchestra of precision, emotion, and community spirit found only in the crowds of runners poised at the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, ready to conquer the concrete jungle. The crowd's energy is an intangible yet potent force, and this episode captures the essence of that support alongside the critical topic of marathon fueling. With anecdotes of energy gels and the sweet taste of success (or sometimes, just too much sugar), Ana dissects the tightrope walk of maintaining energy levels without stomach upsets. Glimpse into the heartwarming tales of spectator ingenuity and discover how the cheers of strangers can propel you through the physical challenge and emotional highs of passing each mile marker.Post-race, the euphoria is palpable as we share the tales of her New York City Marathon experience, from the tear-streaked joy of crossing the finish line to the gastronomic bliss of a well-earned burger. Our journey concludes with brunch at Tiffany's Blue Box Cafe, a treasured photo by the mile 26 marker, and the comical mishaps of a much-needed coffee fix. Join us on this exhilarating tour of perseverance and celebration that encapsulates the marathon spirit, and perhaps you'll be inspired to lace up your running shoes for your next big race.Find out more about the New York City Marathon here:https://www.nyrr.org/tcsnycmarathon Get the Goodr glasses she wore at the 5K the day before her NYC Marathon Debut:https://goodr.com/products/breakfast-run-to-tiffanys Connect with Ana here:https://www.instagram.com/ana.runs.on.coffee  (@ana.runs.on.coffee)https://linktr.ee/Ana.Runs.On.CoffeeCheck out Ana's food and beverage recommendations here:Tiffany's Blue Box Cafehttps://blueboxcafenyc.comPHD Terrace:https://taogroup.com/venues/phd-terrace-new-york/menu/ Support the showTHAT'S A WRAP! This week in track and field, Chris Chavez and Anderson Emerole discuss: Kenya cutting down down on its list of athletes for their Olympic Marathon team selection (Find out who is in and who is out); some of the key performances of the Miramar Invitational in Florida; Abby Steiner raced for the first time since season-ending surgery last summer; Olympic silver medalist Christine Mboma is eligible to compete in the 100m and 200m. Topics discussed: – Athletics Kenya has trimmed down on its names for its potential marathon quad for the Paris Olympics. We are now down to five men and six women who are up for selection for the Games. – The Miramar Invitational lost its spice after Sha'Carri Richardson and Shericka Jackson withdrew from the meet in the days leading up to it but we still saw strong runs from Kenny Bednarek, Britton Wilson, Alaysha Johnson and Melissa Jefferson. – In her first race back from surgery to repair a bone spur in her heel that was pressing up against her Achilles, Abby Steiner ran 51.58 to win the 400m at the Gamecock Invitational in South Carolina. – MTA was reportedly asking New York Road Runners for $750,000 a year to make up for the lost toll revenue from shutting down the top and bottom parts of the Verazzano Bridge. – Namibia's Christine Mboma is reportedly now eligible to compete again. She was the Olympic silver medalist in the 200m at just 18 years old. She is now 20 years old but has not competed in the last two years because she's had to undergo hormonal suppression therapy to lower her naturally-high levels of testosterone in her body. He was excited about the opportunity—despite, he admits, knowing “literally zero” about Lil Nas X. He shares his race-day experiences, from Lil Nas X revealing that he hadn't trained but was eager to chat during their 13.1 miles, to their steady progress through the Brooklyn-to-Manhattan course, to crossing the finish line together in 2 hours, 32 minutes, and 53 seconds.
