In November 2001, beloved medical resident Andrew Bagby was found brutally murdered in a Pennsylvania park. The prime suspect, his former girlfriend Dr. Shirley Turner, immediately fled to St. John's, Newfoundland, where she revealed she was pregnant with Andrew's child. What followed was a complex, years-long international legal battle that pitted Andrew's grieving parents against a foreign justice system in a remote, windswept province. The case ultimately centered on controversial bail decisions and the struggle to protect a child amidst a high-stakes extradition process, eventually sparking landmark legislative changes in Canadian law.Today's snack: Walnut kiffles (Thanks Jody!)Support us on PatreonSources:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5CPymqg4kIBagby, David. Wales and England have had different education systems for more than 25 years now, so it's a weird coincidence that both countries published a ‘National Plan for Music Education' in the same year - 2022. This was an opportunity that Tom and friends of the podcast Dr Elizabeth MacGregor and Dr Viv John, all being music education specialists, couldn't pass up. They've published, and presented in various events, an analysis of the two plans. The analysis aims to spotlight the presumptions, values and hidden agendas underlying the documents from both governments, and there are some interesting conclusions to be had. If you're not a music education person, there's still something in this for you because the analysis uses a framework called What's the Problem Represented to Be, which is a great way of digging into, and uncovering the motivations behind, what might seem at first to be relatively uncontroversial policies and plans. Thanks to Dr Viv for joining Tom in the studio, and to Dr Elizabeth for appearing down-the-line, complete with honorary research team member, Walnut the Dog. If you haven't dipped a toe into the YouTube versions of the podcast, this might be the ideal moment to take a look! Finally, if you're someone with an interest in music education research, whether that's as an academic, research student or practitioner with an interest in research anywhere in the world, you may want to know about GRiME. Cardiff Metropolitan University's Group for Research in Music Education is a collective of academics at all stages of their research careers, and from several universities, who meet regularly to get things done in what can feel a very niche field. This week, a special road trip episode featuring award-winning Owensboro, Kentucky bluegrass singer/songwriter Rick Faris and his band recorded live at the 2024 Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas. The annual Walnut Valley Festival, now in it's 53rd season, is one of the oldest and most respected acoustic music festivals in the world. Held at the Winfield, Kansas fairgrounds, more than 30 musical acts will perform on four separate stages, presenting over 200 hours of live music. Also, there is a dedicated contest stage where contestants vie for national and international championships in Finger Style Guitar, Flat Pick Guitar, Bluegrass Banjo, Old Time Fiddle, Mandolin, Mountain Dulcimer, Hammered Dulcimer, and Autoharp. There is a juried arts and crafts fair, exhibits by renowned instrument makers and music shops, family activities, a bevy of food vendors, a farmer's market and even a pub! An unusual aspect of Walnut Valley is its campground tradition. Campsites are not reserved and campers line up to claim a choice campsite during the "Land Rush.” Walnut Valley Festival goers often bring their own musical instruments to participate in the sometimes all night campground jam sessions. Bands like Old Sound and Sally & The Hurts that began as "Jam Bands" in the campgrounds, have even been invited to perform at the festival. Rick Faris is a Kansas Music Hall of Fame Member who was recently awarded the “Songwriter of the Year” at the 2024 International Bluegrass Music Association Awards making him an 8-time IBMA Award winner. In addition Rick won the coveted “New Artist of the Year” in 2022. Faris also spent 11 years with Special Consensus while the band earned two GRAMMY nominations before embarking on his chart topping solo career. The Rick Faris Band, is an International touring Bluegrass outfit playing in the US, Mainland Europe, the British Isles and Canada. They bring sibling harmony and comedic relief with brother JimBob Faris on bass and a youthful snap to their original brand of music with a couple of bluegrass thoroughbreds, Henry Burgess (who grew up with fiddle legend Byron Berline) and Gibson Davis (who is a third generation bluegrass musician following father Chris Davis and his Grandfather Danny Davis). Rick recently moved to Owensboro, Kentucky the Bluegrass Music Capital and has opened his Faris Guitar Co. - https://rickfaris.com/press-kit In this week's “From the Vault” segment, OHR producer Jeff Glover offers a 1988 archival recording of gospel music legends The Chuck Wagon Gang performing the 1934 J.R. Baxter song “After the Sunrise,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. In his segment “Back in the Hills,” writer, professor and historian Dr. Brooks Blevins explores the storied history of early gospel music publishing in the Ozark and Quachita Mountains.
The February 6 edition of the AgNet News Hour delivered welcome optimism for tree nut growers as hosts Nick Papagni and Josh McGill sat down with Robert Verloop, CEO and Executive Director of the California Walnut Commission and Board. After several difficult years marked by low prices, rising costs, and market uncertainty, Verloop believes the walnut industry is finally turning a corner — both at home and abroad. Verloop opened with a reminder of California's dominance in walnuts. Nearly 99 percent of U.S. walnuts are grown in California, and roughly 65 percent of production is exported. That global reach has made trade policy especially important, and Verloop called recent developments with India the most significant news the industry has seen in years. India currently imposes a 100 percent tariff on walnuts, severely limiting market access. Verloop said a newly finalized agreement between the U.S. and India could dramatically lower that tariff — potentially to 30 percent or less. If that happens, India could quickly become California's largest walnut export market, with the potential to absorb an additional 100,000 tons annually. “That's a game changer,” Verloop said, noting that growers planted acreage years ago in anticipation of broader access to the Indian market. Beyond trade, the discussion focused heavily on marketing and consumer demand, especially domestically. While walnuts are a nutritional powerhouse — rich in omega-3s, fiber, and healthy fats — Verloop acknowledged the industry has been slow to modernize its image. “Today's walnuts are not your grandmother's baking ingredient,” he said. The Commission is now pushing a feel-good campaign aimed at younger families, repositioning walnuts as a daily snack and a versatile ingredient for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Health research is a major pillar of that effort. Verloop highlighted studies linking walnuts to improved heart health, gut health, sleep quality, and even potential benefits in colorectal cancer prevention and brain health. “A handful a day can make a difference,” he said, emphasizing that walnuts align perfectly with growing interest in plant-based nutrition. On the production side, Verloop said California has about 380,000 producing acres of walnuts, with acreage beginning to stabilize after recent declines. Rising input costs, labor challenges, and water availability remain major concerns, particularly for smaller family farms averaging around 60 acres. Many growers, he said, rely on off-farm income to stay afloat. Looking ahead to 2026, Verloop expressed cautious optimism. A strong recent crop, improving global demand, and potential tariff relief could help stabilize grower returns. “We have the product, the quality, and the health story,” he said. “Now we need the markets to line up.” Papagni and McGill closed the episode by agreeing that walnuts may be one of California agriculture's quiet comeback stories — rooted in tradition, but finally embracing modern marketing and global opportunity.

Adam Cordova, retired LASD Deputy, in Episode 232 of the Transition Drill Podcast, shares what it really looks like to build a long law enforcement career without letting the job become your entire identity, for veterans and first responders navigating transition, retirement, and the next chapter. You'll hear Adam on his time in the SHU, to Gangs, then to secret squirrel stuff, and today a podcaster. All while balancing staying solid at home while still being great at the job.Adam grew up in the LA area in places like Compton, Lynwood, Inglewood, in the shadows of Firestone station, in an environment where you learn early how to carry yourself and how fast things can go wrong. He talks about a strict but fair father, being responsible for his brothers, and making a point to stay out of gangs even with that influence close by; his father was an OG “Veterano.” By his senior year, he was living on his own, working, and learning how to survive. Before law enforcement, Adam chased the fire service hard; he actually didn't like cops. He trained at stations, tested well, and thought he was headed that direction, but the process dragged out and felt like a game. A friend pushed him to test for the Sheriff's Department as a backup. That “backup” turned into the career.Adam got hired in 1990, and his early years were exactly what a lot of people don't want, but every agency needs: the jails, then court services. He talks about how that time either sharpens you or stalls you out, depending on what you bring to the work. In 1995, he finally hit patrol, and his first station was Walnut Station, which ended up being a lot busier than people assume. Walnut trained him in North County areas with gangs, drugs, and real calls, and he learned fast that a good cop can work anywhere if they actually want to work. From there, Adam moved into specialized work, including OSS, and later spent 11 years living the callout life where nights, weekends, and family time get sacrificed without anyone asking your permission. When homicide came up as the next “expected” move, he made a different decision and went to Tech Ops instead. He breaks down what that world actually looks like: trackers, bugs, hidden cameras, microphones, bug sweeps, digital evidence, and working warrants across the county with a small team that was basically on-call nonstop.Adam retired in 2022, and today he's still creating in a different way, working with graphic design and video production, something he'd been doing as a serious hobby for years. He also started his own podcast: A Proper Scoundrel, where he talks with former cops about the stories of their careers. Adam has a great story and offers great advice and perspective on having a long law enforcement career. The best podcast for military veterans, police officers, firefighters, and first responders preparing for veteran transition and life after service. It isn't quite the best Stagg Bowl of all time, but surely there's nobody in River Falls, Wisconsin, who cares about that as UW-River Falls brought Walnut and Bronze home to the town of 16,000 on Monday after a 24-14 win against North Central in Stagg Bowl LII. Kaleb Blaha, with 419 yards of total offense, and three total touchdowns responsible for, with one final NCAA record to his name, was a deserving Most Outstanding Player of the Stagg Bowl, and you could make a case for a number of defensive players as well, as many made big plays throughout the night and down the stretch to ensure that the Falcons would fly home with the trophy. After the game, Patrick Coleman, Greg Thomas and postseason regular Keith McMillan sat down to discuss the big game, perhaps crack open a beverage, hand out game balls, hear the highlights, point out the interesting stats and give their big picture perspective on the big game and on the 2025 season. What was the good, what was the bad, and sure, what was the ugly of 2025? That and more in this edition of the D3football.com Around the Nation podcast. The D3football.com Around the Nation podcast is a weekly conversation about NCAA Division III football, and has been running since 2007.

This Episodes Questions: Brians Questions: Just a question to ponder about the future of our favorite material. As old buildings get torn down there seems to a great supply of reclaimed lumber for our current generation. But as we know this is a finite resource. So with that said will the next generation be turning to our generation's slab furniture for their reclaimed lumber? Doug Hey! Sorry if this has already been addressed in a previous episode. I'm in upstate NY, and I have a full wood shop detached from my house. The woodshop is insulated, but the temperature changes outside are pretty much the max, 100 degrees in the summer, and it will live at 20 degrees in the winter. In the winter, should I keep materials I'm working on in my house, bring them out to the shop when I'm cutting, and then bring them back in? It seems excessive, but it's really huge temperature changes. I'm mostly dealing with walnut. Is the temperature the bigger issue, or is it really humidity? I could maybe install a heat pump, just yah know it's a lot of energy. If I went that route, do you have a recommendation for a temp I should keep materials at? Thanks again for making such a great show -Mohamed Guys Questions: Hello and thank you for the wonderful podcast. I was hoping for some insights on builds for high moisture environments. My fiancé and I just moved into our first house and need to update the bathroom vanity. Rather than spend hundreds of dollars on a a shoddy big-box-store model, I would like to take a crack at building one myself. I have enough experience with woodworking and building cabinets that I feel confident with the actual construction, but am concerned about the high moisture environment. I plan on making a carcass out of prefinished plywood with face frames and drawer fronts out of a yet-to-be-determined species (likely red oak). What advice and considerations do you all have for these high moisture environments? Do I need to use special finishes or some sort of sealant for the hardwood components? Do I need to worry about sealing or finishing the edges of the plywood even though the faces are prefinished? Do I need any special considerations for moisture or even mold build up between the face frame and plywood carcass? Any and all advice on this is greatly appreciated Thanks as always! Andrew Hey Guys, I love your show. Hearing 3 sets of opinions with different levels of experience really helps me learn. I've heard so many different approaches to sanding that I'm coming to the experts for guidance. To what grit do you sand to for Oak, Walnut, Maple, and cherry. Do you think a planned or card scraped surface is better than a sanded surface? Does it take the finish just as well? Thanks for all you do! Ezra Huys Questions: Another question... I recently had a small tornado that took the roof off of my shop. As a result, all of my tools got wet and the power tools - table saw, jointer, band saw, drill press etc - all got wet and rusted. They've been in storage since March of this year. I have new shop being built and hope to have it done by the end of this month. What suggestions do y'all have in terms of getting the rust off of the tools and checking for any other possible water damage? Thanks. Ron Brewer I'm making a walnut bench that I want to route headboard sides (legs) on and I'm not sure how to go about it. I'm not sure if a straight edge/track with a router and at pointed round over bit would be the best route or if I should do it on the router table. I plan on using a 3/8” or 1/2” radius point cutting round over bit for the beading. The end two end panels are 16”x18” and 1.5” thick. I have a festool 1400 router and an Incra router table as possible options. Also, once I get these panels made what's the best way to sand the beads since they come down to a tight point in the middle. Sanding seems like it would be a huge pain and not sure if the router bit would leave a good enough finish to apply finish without prep work. Thanks, Chayse

We recently rebroadcast our Audacious episode featuring Chris Crowe. He's a bird keeper at Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute’s campus in Front Royal, Virginia. He spent nearly twenty years as the chosen partner of an endangered white-naped crane named Walnut. She was one of only 5,000 in the world, but to Chris, she was one of a kind. Walnut's life expectancy as a bird living in captivity was 15 years. But she died at the age of 42 on January 2, 2024. In that original episode, just five months after her death, I spoke with Chris about their life together. And from the responses we got, their life together deeply resonated with you. Which is why we decided to rebroadcast it! But then something remarkable happened. A few hours after we decided to publish that rerun, I saw a post from Chris on Facebook: He just got his first tattoo - a giant portrait of Walnut. When the universe lines things up that precisely, I pay attention. So I reached out to him. I wanted to ask what moved him to get this tattoo now, how it feels to carry her on his arm, and how he’s doing as the two-year anniversary of her death approaches. Then, meet a birdkeeper at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute who was chosen by an endangered crane to be her life partner for almost 20 years. This episode originally aired on September 13, 2024. Listen to an updated conversation with Chris Crowe, including his experience getting his first tattoo - a giant portrait of Walnut. In this episode I feature Peruvian Walnut and talk about how it has become a flooring species. Specifically how its drying difficulty drove it to be a flooring product. Additionally I talk about juvenile wood, Jindai wood, and the Hickory/Pecan confusion. Make sure you check out TDC's video about urban lumber that features previous guests Camp Small and UVA Sawmilling. https://youtu.be/5kx-CoT4zsg?si=0j-g9JS70K5nFYR-
This is a SpeedCast with heart: wild memories, hard-won lessons, and a front-row look at how home health actually works when ventilators, trachs, and human feelings are all in the room.Jamie Turner from Elite Care Management pulls back the curtain on scheduling: pairing the right clinician to high-acuity needs, navigating last-minute call-offs, and guarding the crucial bond between patients and familiar nurses. Max shares the Walnut benefit story—the surreal moment of rolling out of a long hospital stay into a crowd that stood and cheered—and how “day one” teammates made that possible. We get honest about immature chapters, sticky boundaries, and the shift that came with the right nurse at the right time. Safety threads through every scene: emergency readiness, ambu bag placement, training for vent dependence, and why continuity of care is a clinical imperative, not a convenience. There's humor, too—expo chaos, past missteps, and the way a “dream team” can still laugh on the hardest days. But the core message is steady: perseverance is a daily practice, built on trust, preparation, and people who refuse to quit on each other. If you're navigating home care, complex disability, or just trying to rebuild after a setback, you'll find practical insight and honest hope here.If this resonated, subscribe, share it with someone who needs encouragement, and leave a review to help others find the show. Tell us: what does continuity of care mean to you?
