“I also learned that I just love working with athletes who truly have that passion about seeing how good they can be. The outcome isn't as important to me as I thought. It's just, ‘Let's go see how good we can be and see where that lands us...' Stepping away from college and taking this really windy journey to where I am now, I've been able to work with all different levels of athletes and it's been equally rewarding to those who run their first mile without stopping all the way to the world stage. It's been a non-conventional path, but I've been loving it.”My guest for today's episode is someone who's seen—and shaped—American middle-distance running from just about every angle. Juli Benson was a 1996 Olympian in the 1500 meters, a world-class competitor in her own right, and now she's one of the most respected coaches in the sport.Over the past two decades, Juli's coaching journey has taken her from college programs like Georgetown, Air Force, and Penn to working with World Champions, Olympians, and emerging pros. She coached Jenny Simpson to her gold medal at the 2011 World Championships. She guided Kevin Sullivan back to the global stage. And today, she's the coach behind Nikki Hiltz, helping them chase a 2028 Olympic dream of their own.In this episode, we get into it all: – What makes Nikki tick and how their partnership is evolving – The differences between coaching NCAA athletes vs. pros – How Juli learned to balance intensity with recovery—the hard way – Her reflections on being a woman in the coaching world before there were many to look up to – And what it's like now to see coaches like Shalane Flanagan, Diljeet Taylor, and Laurie Henes rise to national prominenceWe also talk about Juli's time at Air Force, the unique challenges of coaching across every level of the sport, and what it's meant to mentor everyone from Olympic finalists to first-time runners. This is a conversation about resilience, evolution, and quiet excellence—and it's one of my favorite coaching deep-dives we've done yet.Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Juli Benson | julibensontraining.comSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSKETONE-IQ: Level up your training with Ketone-IQ – a clean shot of energy with no sugar or caffeine. "I hope that through my work, people saw my life." With a legendary 14-year career on the track and on the roads, professional 1500m runner and miler Jenny Simpson decided earlier this year that she was ready to retire. After spending 2024 diving into the world of marathoning, Jenny announced that she would run the TCS New York City Marathon as her final professional race.  Then, after crossing the finish line in 2:31:54 and settling onto the couch with a bowl of ice cream (Blue Bell mint chocolate chip), Jenny got an invitation — and an immediate jolt off that couch. Instead of heading into retirement, Jenny embarked on The Great World Race, running seven marathons on seven continents in seven days.   Up next: Jenny and Jason (and their two dogs) are packing up the Winnebago and spending the next year on a 50-state Run USA tour. Jenny Simpson Interview

This week, George Hirsch and Amby Burfoot talk with Jenny Simpson, miler turned marathoner--well, almost, as Simpson hasn't finished a marathon yet. But she'll be toeing the start line in Hopkinton on April 15, and she sounds absolutely determined to make it to the Copley-Square finish line.  Simpson explains in this conversation that she never intended for the Olympic Marathon Trials in February to be her first marathon start, but life had other ideas, so that's how things developed. She dropped out of the Trials at about 18 miles, and now thinks she overtrained and overstressed about the 26.2-mile distance. For a decade, Simpson had been the best USA 1500 meter/miler. She excelled at the global level, winning an Olympic bronze along with a gold and two silvers at the World Championships. She also won the Fifth Ave Mile 8 times. Even during her track career, Simpson explains, she did a long run almost every weekend. She also attended many marathons with her husband, Jason, a 2:18 runner, and found herself inspired by the tens of thousands of amateur runners who challenged themselves with the marathon distance.  Before speaking with Jenny, George and Amby discussed the biggest recent running news. Amby got a chuckle over his Google News aggregator, which brought him an April Fool's Day story from LetsRun.com. It claimed that Taylor Switft was now dating shot put great, Ryan Crouser, all 6' '7" and 320 pound of him. Take that Travis Kelce! But Amby turned serious when noting that the BAA/Boston Marathon was putting out press releases listing "5 Reasons for a Clear Course" while a Black running club rejoindered with "5 Reasons for a Cheer Course." Last year there was tension at the Marathon's 21st mile when club members allegedly ran onto the course. George was impressed by the always strong performances at the World Cross-Country Championships. This year in Serbia, the Kenyan senior women swept the top 5 places--an unprecedented team achievement. Individual champions Beatrice Chebet (Kenya) and Jacob Kiplimo (Uganda) repeated their victories of 2 years ago. The next World Cross meet will be held in January, 2026, in Tallahassee, FL. Reviewing their conversation with Simpson, Amby said that he appreciated her conviction that a woman athlete could be both a fierce competitor and a good sport at the same time. George liked her fearlessness in stepping up from the mile to the marathon. You can keep up with Jenny Simpson by following her on Instagram. “This is a different moment in my career compared to any other one in the past because I've suffered a major disappointment. It's up for debate if I should've taken a break after the Trials and reset but, man, I didn't feel like I could stop. All of this training is in me and this motivation to show the world the hard work I've put in. I didn't take this journey lightly. I really care about making this transformation from middle distances to the longer stuff. I just really wanted to keep going.” 20 minutes of catching up with Olympic medalist and world champion Jenny Simpson before she takes on the NYC Half on Sunday. It is her first race since unfortunately dropping out of her marathon debut at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Orlando last month. We chat a bit about her lessons from that race, whether she would've done anything differently and how she's taking that into her next few races. Moments before we did this interview, the BAA announced Jenny has been added to the Boston Marathon field for April 15 – along with Sara Hall, Caroline Rotich, Elkanah Kibet and Sam Chelanga. So we discuss her plans for that race and a wider shot of how she views this chapter of her legendary career. At age 37, Jenny Simpson has seemingly done it all in the world of distance running, having won world championships and Olympic medals at 1,500 meters and eight New Balance 5th Avenue Mile titles. This Saturday, February 3, she'll take a big step up in distance when she runs her first marathon at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Orlando. In this episode, Simpson shares her origins in the sport—she started in elementary school in Oviedo, FL, just down the road from Orlando—and her nearly 30-year journey to its highest levels. She talks about the many supporters she's had along the way, from P.E. teachers to coaches to her husband, Jason, who's also an elite athlete, breaks down the training adjustments she's made in preparation for taking on 26.2, and reflects on whether she'll have a home field advantage this weekend. Sam turned that moment into something much more when he applied for a job as a web editor at the New York Road Runners. Sam tells the story of interviewing for the job and not thinking he would get it. Sam, the NYRR director of professional athletes since 2005, reveals one of the hardest days of his career in 2012. He explains why he believes the Fifth Avenue Mile is the best race in the world. He says why this race stresses him out much more than the New York City Marathon. Sam gives his view of the biggest change in distance running the past 10 years and why Iowa native Jenny Simpson is one of his favorite people in running. He also talks about how former Iowa State All-American Annie Frisbie made him a believer a couple of years ago and the process of moving elite runners from Midtown Manhattan to Staten Island on marathon morning. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/lance-bergeson8/support

"I've never been someone that felt like I did my best work trying to prove somebody wrong. I do my best work trying to prove somebody right." It hasn't been an easy year for three-time world championship medalist, three-time Olympian, and Olympic bronze medalist Jenny Simpson. In the 48 hours before the calendar turned from 2021 to 2022, Jenny watched as her world began to crumble. On December 30, wildfires engulfed her historic home — a former schoolhouse, beloved by Jenny and her husband, Jason, and by their community. They (with their dog, Truman) evacuated, hoping for the best and preparing for the worst. On December 31, her 12-year contract with New Balance ended, and wasn't renewed — something Jenny calls "a great heartbreak." Plus, the 1500-meter legend was injured. In true Jenny form, though, she's seeing the bright side now. Jenny and Jason's home somehow survived the fire, and after being displaced for three months, they were able to move back in and rebuild their lives. She's no longer injured, and with all systems go, she's officially transitioning from the track to the roads, with longer distances in mind. ("I'm not training for a marathon," she swears.) Two weeks ago, she won the Army 10-Miler, and she has one more race on the calendar for 2022. And she is, once again, a fully sponsored professional athlete. Jenny signed with Puma earlier this year. "As my idea of how those years would unfold so dramatically changed, I started to embrace this saying just for myself that it would always be a surprise ending. I was never going to be able to control exactly how I kept going. It was not the storybook ending to my track career that I imagined. But more recently, even after the whole surprise ending revelation, I decided I can make this a surprise middle. It doesn't have to be the end...In the last few months, changing things up has been reinvigorating. It's given me energy and it's just a new scene." My guest for this episode is Jenny Simpson. This is her second time on the show. Her last appearance in November 2019 is one of my all-time favorite episodes. Now she's back and she's repping a new sponsor. Last week, she signed a new deal with PUMA and announced that she will be shifting much of her focus to the roads. She won three World Championship medals and an Olympic bronze medal in her track career. One of the most astonishing stats is that she broke four minutes for the 1500m in 2009 and 2019, which really was a decade-long stretch as one of America's shining middle-distance stars. We discuss all of the big changes and also discuss some of the hardships from the past two years with injuries and also being displaced from her home due to the Colorado wildfires last December. Jenny is always one of the most thoughtful people to chat with. I'm sure we could've kept going for hours. Listen to Jenny's first appearance on the podcast here. We had an epic NYC Marathon weekend that started with our Izzy participating in a one-mile race through Central Park sponsored by New York Road Runners. A one-mile run can be a feat for any 8-year-old, but especially for Izzy who at 12 months old was diagnosed with a spinal cord tumor. As you may know, Izzy is my inspiration for running. She works hard every single day to rehab from what the tumor, surgery, and 14 months of chemotherapy did to her little body. But she fights every day to show that tumor who is really in control and this Run with Champions race was no different. What Izzy lacks in physical ability, she more than makes up for in heart and brilliance so I wanted to shine a spotlight on her major accomplishment as she completed the one-miler on her own in her walker. To make the race even more epic, Jenny Simpson and Meb Keflizighi were waiting for at the finish line despite her coming in dead last, to congratulate her. That image of her really gutting it out for 27 minutes to finish her miler was what carried me through 26.2 miles through the five boroughs of New York City just two days later. My IT band which has troubled me for years but took a break for the last few months decided that mile 4 of the marathon would be a great time to become terribly inflamed once again. From there the rest of the race was a suffer-fest, but I'm proud to say that I crossed that finish line hand-in-hand with Marco whose support was absolutely everything for those 5.5 hours it took to complete race. What's next for us? More marathons! NYC was my first but certainly not my last. But for our Izzy? Well, you'll just have to listen through the end to hear what she says. You can follow along with Izzy's journey on Instagram at @IzzyLivingHerBestLife

Stories of the the songs beginnings and how one person in radio kept a single from being a #1 song... Michael serves as National Spokesperson for The American Legion's American Legacy Scholarship for nearly ten years, Michael assisted in raising millions of dollars to help ensure college educations for the children of post-9/11 Veterans who gave their life in service to our nation. Over the last decade, Michael and his wife, Army Women's Hall Of Fame inductee COL Jill W. Chambers U.S. Army (Ret) have provided ongoing leadership and creative consulting for several groundbreaking Military Veteran support programs including Syracuse University's renowned - Institute For Veterans & Military Families (IVMF). For the past ten years Michael has served as the National Spokesman and Master of Ceremonies for The National Veterans Creative Arts Festival (NVCAF). This program showcases the Veterans Administrations work utilizing art therapy to help wounded Veterans find healing. 120 Gold medal recipients in the visual and performing arts are honored annually on this PBS Television special. Following eleven tours and over 150 performances for deployed Service members in Iraq and Afghanistan, Michael Peterson received the prestigious Spirit Of Hope medal from the U.S.O. and the U.S. Army. This honor is given annually to individuals whose selfless service as entertainers perpetuates the legacy of the late Bob Hope.   Recorded July 1, 2021 Episode Sponsored by: Surfshark and Passport America.   From WIKIPEDIA: Michael James Peterson (born August 7, 1959) is an American country music artist. He made his debut on the country music scene in 1997 with his self-titled debut album, which produced five Top 40 hits on Billboards Hot Country Singles & Tracks, including the Number One hit "From Here to Eternity". Peterson's second album, 1999's Being Human, produced two more chart singles, and a third album, 2004's Modern Man, was issued only in Europe. Peterson also made a cameo appearance on an episode of Walker, Texas Ranger. After attending high school at Richland High School in Richland, WA, Peterson later earned a football scholarship to Pacific Lutheran University, where he won a national championship. One of his teammates, Brad Westering, was also working as a producer for Deniece Williams at the time. Through Westering, Peterson got the opportunity to write songs for Williams, as well as gospel headliners The Imperials. This all led to the production of Peterson's first release, "Michael Peterson", a collection of contemporary Christian songs, on Sparrow Records in 1986. Eventually, Peterson traveled to Nashville, Tennessee where he started working as a professional songwriter, collaborating with other writers such as Josh Leo and Robert Ellis Orrall.   Orrall suggested that Peterson sign to a recording contract, and in December 1996, Peterson was signed to Reprise Records, a division of the Warner Music Group. His debut single, "Drink, Swear, Steal & Lie", was released that year, charting at No. 3 on the Billboard country charts and No. 86 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was the lead-off single to Peterson's self-titled debut album (not to be confused with the Christian album of the same name from 1986), which also produced four more chart singles. The second one, "From Here to Eternity", became Peterson's first and only Number One hit, while "Too Good to Be True" reached No. 8. Following it were "When the Bartender Cries" at No. 37 and "By the Book" at No. 19. The album was certified gold by the RIAA for shipping 500,000 copies in the U.S. Also in 1997, Peterson was named Male Artist of the Year by Billboard. In 1998, Peterson appeared on Jenny Simpson's 1998 self-titled album, singing duet vocals on "Grow Young with You". Peterson made a guest appearance on a 1998 episode of Walker, Texas Ranger called "Eyes of a Ranger."   Peterson released his second album, Being Human, in 1999.[3] Its lead-off single, "Somethin' 'bout a Sunday", failed to reach top 40, and "Sure Feels Real Good" peaked at No. 39. Also in 1999, Peterson co-wrote the title track to Travis Tritt's album No More Looking over My Shoulder, which was released as a single. After a Super Hits album for the label, Peterson exited Warner Music Group.   After his departure from Warner, Peterson signed to Monument Records Nashville. His third studio album, Modern Man, was to have been released in 2002 for the label. Although its title track and "Lesson in Goodbye" both entered the country charts (with the former being the highest-debuting single of his career), the album itself was not issued in the US due to a restructuring of the label's parent company. AGR, a European record label, acquired the album and issued it in Europe in 2004. Six singles were released from it in Europe, including Peterson's own rendition of "No More Looking over My Shoulder." Also included on the album was the track "Right About Now", which Ty Herndon later released from his 2007 album of the same name.   Peterson's songs have been covered by a number of artists. Though his last charting song was in 2002, he continues to release albums and performs at military benefits.   https://www.facebook.com/hotcountrypodcast https://www.hotcountrypodcast.com  https://www.facebook.com/OfficialChrisMcKay
