In the last 14 months, Sara Hall has shattered the American  marathon masters record, finished runner-up at back-to-back marathons, and proved (once again) that elite performance doesn't have an expiration date.  Sara most recently finished second at the 2026 Houston Marathon with a time of 2:26:26. At 42 years of age, she is still setting Masters records, including her 2:23:45 showing at the 2024 Valencia Marathon. Even with a 5th place finish at the 2024 Marathon Olympic Trials, she steadfastly remains an elite runner on the world stage.  Sara's personal best in the marathon is an impressive 2:20:32, set at The Marathon Project in 2020. She holds the U.S. masters marathon record for the 40+ age group with her 2:23:45 time from Valencia. Even more impressively, she has competed in eight consecutive U.S. Olympic Trials since 2004, spanning distances from the 1500m to the marathon.Sara is coached by her husband, Ryan Hall, who held the American record for the half marathon for many years before a new crop of men bested his time in 2025 and 2026. Sara Hall's career doesn't fit neatly into eras. In the fall of 2020, while much of the world was still stuck inside wondering when things might go back to normal, Tim West was lacing up his racing shoes, logging miles, and building something new – not a tech startup, not an app, but a running brand, out of his basement. He quickly recruited his brother Nick on his vision. They didn't spend money on big splashy ads or influencer campaigns. Instead, they listened, they ran, and they asked questions. They built gear starting with socks that runners actually wanted. Over the next few years, what started as a side project for the two brothers and their designer turned co-founder Ardith  Singh, grew into one of the most exciting new names in running: Bandit Running – a Brooklyn-based company that makes premium performance apparel and centers community at the heart of everything it does. But Nick West didn't come from the fashion world. Him and his brother Tim were working in e-commerce at Jet.com. They grew up immersed in the New Jersey skate and surf scene where the coolest brands weren't built in boardrooms. In 2023, as the associate head coach for cross country and assistant track and field coach, Palmer led the Gators' women to their highest national ranking since 2009, an SEC championship, and a second place finish at the NCAA East Regionals. "I think that it has gotten to a point where we've taken the racing out of racing. We've taken the sport and turned it into something else. Track is about racing. You have eight athletes on the track for a reason. You award a champion or award a winner of the race for a reason: because they outperformed everyone else. And that's not easy. That's one of my fears: that people will start to think that it's easy, because the winner is not really being highlighted for having won. They're being highlighted for having run a personal best. Ultimately, if you're not careful, you end up with this deconstructed competition where it's not about the athletes in the race… We're very excited about what we're bringing...I can't wait. That's what you want. One of the things that's funny to me is when I see people in the track world on social media talking about fantasy matchups. It's like: We have the real fantasy over here. It's real. It's not fantasy. It's actually happening."The countdown is on. Coach, athlete, mom, author, Sara Slattery comes on the podcast today for the first time! Sara has a diverse and impressive resume, which began in high school when she ran for Mountain Pointe High in Arizona.  Sara went to run at the University of Colorado, where she placed 8th at the 2000 NCAA Women's Cross Country championships, becoming the first frosh to win All-American honors at Colorado. She was an 11-time All-American, four-time NCAA champion and was inducted in 2016 as a member of the Colorado Athletics Hall of Fame. She earned her Master's degree in Education at this time. Sara began her 2006 season as a professional runner. It was that year she set PRs in the 5k with a time of 15:08 and the 10k with a time of 31:56. Sara was the Pan American Games Champion in 2007 after recovering from a stress fracture. She also came in fourth at the Olympic Trials in the 5k in 2008.Sara turned her focus to coaching when she became the head coach of the Grand Canyon University cross-country team from 2015-2022. She is one of a few women Division One coaches that has coached both genders.Sara has been busy since making coaching and parenting her priority: she is the Director of Nike Camp Elevate XC Camp in Prescott Arizona; in addition to co-directing the Women's Running Retreat at Civana Resort in Carefree, Arizona with marathoner Sara Hall. “Once I made the Olympic team, it was kind of like a weight was lifted off my shoulders. I finally accomplished that goal. This is weird to say, but I feel like there was a lot less pressure on me for the Olympics than any NCAA race. At NCAA races, I was expected to win. But at the Olympics, they're like, ‘She's here!'”My guest for today's episode isParker Valby. This is her third time on the show. Over the past year, she rewrote the NCAA record books, becoming the first woman in history to win 5 individual NCAA titles in a single academic year. It earned her the prestigious Bowerman Award. Her undefeated season included a record-breaking performance at every championship level from cross country to indoor to outdoor.She shattered the collegiate 10,000m record by 28 seconds, ran a historic 14:52 at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, and capped it all off with a runner-up finish at the U.S. Olympic Trials to qualify for her first Olympic team. Unfortunately did not have the time to catch Betsy Saina. From our race preview on CITIUSMAG.com: The American showdown may become a chase for Emily Sisson's American record, as three of the five fastest women in U.S. history will be on the start line alongside 2021 Chicago runner-up Emma Bates, Chavez's pick to take down the record. Keira D'Amato, who held this record for just under nine months in 2022, will be racing 26.2 miles for the first time since moving to Utah to train with coach Ed Eyestone. We won't know until Sunday exactly what her and Eyestone's race plan looks like, but don't be surprised if she's in the mix for the top American crown. 2024 U.S. leader Betsy Saina, whose fifth-place finish in Tokyo in 2:19:17 was a huge leap forward, figures to be a prominent player as well. 2016 Olympic 1500m champion Matthew Centrowitz is set to be pacing this pack as they go after 2:18:29, so that will be something to keep an eye on even if the leaders are well ahead.
