Gen is one of Australia's most accomplished middle-distance runners of all-time, she's a 3 time Olympic finalist, the Australian record holder and is soon bound for an incredible 4th Olympic Games in Paris. Throw in pregnancy and the birth of her son Archer into that timeline and you have a seriously inspirational comeback story. The resilience, determination and professionalism of Gen Gregson is impossible to ignore. We get to chat about her early days running barefoot on the farm through to her stunning 2:23 marathon in Valencia. Gen details her plans to prepare meticulously for Paris and the importance of the Australian women's distance cartel in pushing her along to bigger things. Three-time Olympian Dave McNeill joins the roaming FTK Studio (this week's recording is brought to you by Joel's sister's boyfriend's family's dining table… wrap your head around that!) to bring a whole lot of running knowledge, passion and previously unforeseen levels of maturity to the show. Joel and Dave talk about altered training while they manage lasting niggles from Zatopek:10 and other demands on the body such as overtraining and nutrition. Dave, a registered physiotherapist, offers professional insight into the body and injury management while also opening up about personal mental health struggles. The hosts discuss the culture of running within Melbourne Track Club, and reveal some of the nuances that exist to produce such successful results across so many athletes. Today's guest on The XC Podcast is Andrea Seccafien, one of Canada's most accomplished distance runners who now trains in Australia. Seccafien, a 2016 Olympian from Guelph, Ontario now trains under coach Nic Bideau with the Melbourne Track Club. In 2019, she became the fourth Canadian woman to dip under the 15-minute barrier for 5,000m and three months after that, she set a new Canadian half-marathon record of 69:38. The 30-year-old is currently navigating the highs and lows of the pandemic in Australia, which involved a 111 day lockdown last summer, followed by a nearly COVID-free fall and winter. Through it all, she's built some great fitness. She recently competed in a road 10k and set a personal best time of 31:45. In this episode, Alex Cyr asks Seccafien about her current training, how she clawed out of a nasty injury cycle in 2018, how life in the Southern Hemisphere is different than in North America, and how she used baking to keep her mental health in check during a long lockdown. Host: Alex Cyr Guest: Andrea Seccafien
Today, on the podcast I am incredibly fortunate to be chatting to Adrian Blincoe. In July 2008 Adrian ran an astonishing 13:10, the fastest ever 5000m run by a New Zealander, his record still stands today (as of early 2021)! We start off the chat by taking a deep dive into his time at Villanova College where he was coached by the legendary Marcus O’Sullivan. Adrian spent 12 yrs at Villanova as both an athlete and assistant coach. He had a big hand in athlete recruitment at Villanova and was integral in getting the likes of; Sam McEntee, Matthew Gibney, Jordan Williamz and Patrick Tiernan across the ditch. We then chat about his professional running career as a sponsored New Balance athlete that ran for the Melbourne Track Club, running with the likes of; Craig Mottram, Collis Birmingham, Bobby Curtis and many others. We discuss his Beijing 2008 Olympic experience and many other memories (races/training sessions and learnings) from his career. We finish the chat talking about his last 9yrs with High Performance New Zealand where he is heavily involved with athlete development. I personally watched Adrian growing up as a kid, whether it was at Golden League Athletics meets on TV or at Melbourne Track events! So, as you would expect it was a complete honour to chat to him. He spoke with such poise, confidence and oozed wisdom, it’s a chat many will get a lot from particularly the up and coming athlete. . In an absolute treat for the show, we have legitimate superstar of Australian athletics Stewy McSweyn joining us this week. Stewy is coming to us from his hotel quarantine in Brisbane, where he has had a chance to (finally) reflect on an incredible season in Europe – a season where he broke the long held Australian 1500m record in the Doha Diamond League (his first Diamond League win). Stewy also broke the Aussie record in the 3,000m, to go with his 10,000m national record from December 2019.The biggest takeaway for Stewy from this season was confidence that he can compete on the world stage, and the knowledge that he has made another significant improvement from where he was in 2019 – and he says that’s the key for 2021 as well, to find another 10% improvement in his development. Stewy also says he doesn’t necessarily have a preferred distance to race – his preference is whatever he’s doing best in – something that changes throughout the season. He credits his Melbourne Track Club team for helping him develop that range from the 1,500m to the 10,000m – the squad has talented athletes at all distances, meaning Stewy can always be pushed and tested in training. Finally, we get a bit of a look into Stewy’s plans for the summer – including potentially opening up his season at the Christmas Carnivals in Tasmania.LinksWatch Running Things on YouTubeStewy McSweyn InstagramStewy McSweyn’s 1,500m win in DohaRiley Wolff on InstagramTempo Journal on Instagramtempojournal.com

This weeks episode is with Tim O’shaughnessy. Tim’s life has been just so intertwined with running and athletics! He is currently a running coach at Wesley College and outside of this his running group works very closely with Nick Bideau’s guys at the Melbourne Track Club. In this episode I quiz him on the inner workings of MTC and why he believes they have been just so successful. We hark back to his own running career under Pat Clohessy, his City to Surf wins, what training was like with ‘the Pack’ with Chris Wardlaw, Ron Clark, Rob DeCastella and many others...We then also go over his roles in the football world; as a fitness advisor and coach and then his experience as the Athletics Australia distance running Co-ordination from 2007-2014. I loved how this episode flowed more alike a chat/conversation rather than an interview, as you will see Tim is a great story teller. I really enjoyed chatting to Tim, I’m sure many of you will enjoy listening in too!
