"{Houston} was a really great season opener and showed me again that I could fuel like I even fuel in the half marathon now, it's I'm able to take fuel. It's, and sustain my training and feel healthy and finishing strong in my races," shares Molly Bookmyer. Bookmyer is an elite distance runner based in Columbus OH. She walked onto the Ohio State XC/Track and FIeld teams, but left the sport before graduating because of some frustrating injuries and health issues. She wasn't getting regular periods, which actually led to her healthcare team discovering a small brain tumor. After some time away from the sport she got back into distance running and eventually qualified for both the 2020 and 2024 Marathon Olympic Trials. While her marathon and half-marathon times have improved over the years—she ran a PR and won the 2024 Twin Cities Marathon in 2:28, and ran a half-marathon PR at the 2025 Houston Marathon with a 1:09—she has also navigated some intense challenges with gut health and fueling.  We recorded this right before she traveled to DC where she ran the Cherry Blossom 10-miler, which she finished in 52:42, 8th overall female and 7th american. As she shared on Instagram, she “Ran over a minute PR in the 10 mile race and snagged a 10k PR of 32:11 in the process”.  Next up is London, so we'll be virtually cheering for her in a few weeks! This episode covers a lot! We discuss:  Her 14th place finish at the Half marathon championships in March 2025 Why she's planning to do more races this year How she walked onto the XC/TF team at Ohio State in college, her experience as a collegiate athlete, and why she quit after a few years How she found out she had a small brain tumor, which may have been related to her experience with amenorrhea  Why and how she got back into high level/elite running, which only a few years later landed her in 3rd place at the 2019 US 25K Championship How her fueling has evolved, especially after two stress fractures in/around 2020, and then a very unpleasant experience during the 2022 Houston Marathon Her gluten-free fueling strategies and what's working well for her now Her water bottle secret for elites And her post-race journaling prompts!  Follow Molly on Instagram to cheer her on, @MollyBookie.  Follow Lane 9 @Lane9Project.  Connect with a women's health and sport clinician to get support with YOUR fueling, mental health, and/or period health by going to Lane9Project.org/directory.

Got feedback about this episode? Send Carolyn a textLeanne Klassen is back on the show, along with her coach, the legendary Malindi Elmore, to break down Leanne's outstanding marathon performance last month in Houston.Malindi is a three-time Olympian and a true icon of Canadian distance running. A Stanford graduate, she first competed in the 1500 meters at the 2004 Athens Olympics, and then made a remarkable transition to the marathon—placing 9th at the 2021 Tokyo Games and representing Canada again in Paris last summer, a full 20 years after her Olympic debut! At nearly 45 years of age and living in Kelowna, BC, with her husband, Graham, and their two young boys, Malindi continues to train and compete at the highest level while coaching athletes and winning national titles.Leanne was first on the show in the fall of 2023, where we talked about navigating injuries with grace. As a sub-elite distance runner, she's faced her fair share of setbacks, which led her and Malindi to take a fresh approach to her Houston Marathon buildup. Instead of prioritizing high mileage and grueling long runs, they focused on a less-is-more strategy—emphasizing smart training, recovery, and strength work. The results were nothing short of incredible. Leanne not only felt stronger than ever in training, but she also took a massive two minutes off her personal best, running 2:40:52 in tough weather conditions. As endurance athletes, we often fall into the trap of thinking more is always better—but what if real breakthroughs happen by training smarter, not harder? Whether you're a recreational runner or competing at an elite level, this is the kind of story that deserves more attention.Connect with Leanne:Inspired Soles Interview: Navigating Injuries With GraceInstagram: @leanneklassen7Connect with Malindi:Website: malindielmore.comInstagram: @malindielmoreConnect with Carolyn:Instagram: @inspiredsolescast or @carolyn.c.coffinYou can help spread the running love! "Kurt's seen it and my teammates have seen it. I've gotten better every single week for two years straight. So the world is seeing this massive jump, but for me, it's over 100 weeks of improvement. That's super steady. At some point it was going to be reflected in one big performance. It didn't happen overnight." In March 2023, Erika Kemp was gearing up to make her marathon debut. The six-time collegiate All-American and multiple-time USATF national champion was on a racing hot streak, having earned titles from the 5K up to the 20K. She had just signed with Brooks Running, and was being coached by Kurt Benninger. But, Erika insisted, she hadn't had her big, breakout, career-defining performance yet.  That changed this past weekend at the Houston Marathon. Erika finished second in 2:22:56 — and 11-minute personal best, and comfortably under the world standard. She remains the fastest American-born Black woman in the marathon. In this conversation, Erika talks about her breakout day in Houston, and about what it took to make such a massive improvement in the marathon. Plus, the advice and affirmation Erika got from Des Linden before the race, her snapshot moment from the day, and how she learned to embrace the "marathoner" title. “Immediately after dropping out of the Trials, Kurt [Benninger] was very quick to be like, ‘You will see the benefits of this. It's not today, but this is not for nothing.' It's nice to come full circle 11 months later and get that payoff.” My guest for today's episode is Erika Kemp, fresh off a remarkable performance at the 2025 Houston Marathon, where she shattered her personal best by 11 minutes to finish second in 2:22:56. This race wasn't just a breakthrough; it was a statement. Erika now ranks 12th on the all-time U.S. marathon list and has cemented her place as one of the top American distance runners. Have you ever looked back at a day in your life, and said "WOW - I Can't Believe I did That!"? In this podcast series, listen to QT2 athletes tell the stories of how they achieved goals that they once never dreamed possible. Season 2, Episode 8 features QT2 athlete Jason Howard, coached by Bob Richter. Jason's journey in the sport of triathlon began just eighteen months ago. In the spring of 2023, Jason, a long-time runner, was sidelined with a broken foot. Under doctors orders, until his foot fully healed, he could only participate in closed chain exercises. Jason used this set back as an opportunity to try something new and he signed up for his first sprint triathlon. Jason bought a bike and hit the pool, and only a few weeks later, he finished he was a triathlete. Buoyed by this accomplishment, he participated in several triathlons over the next few months, capping off his season with the Oilman middle distance race. The following day, already thinking about his next goal, the Houston Marathon, Jason did a short easy run. Unfortunately, his body was not ready for the effort, and he injured his other foot, this time the peroneal tendon. In the spring of 2024, with bigger goals on his mind, Jason hired Coach Bob Richter. Together, they plotted out a schedule for the season, targeting IRONMAN California has is A race. With much to learn, Jason put his head down and did the work. In October, he was ready to be an IRONMAN. The day started out well, with both the swim and bike playing out better than expected. The first seven miles of the run also went well, and then his foot gave out on him. He could not even walk without intense pain. At that point, Jason was not sure he could continue and considered dropping out of the race. But he willed himself to continue. After several stops and starts, the pain eased up and Jason knew that he could complete the race. This was Jason's GREATEST MOMENT. Crossing the finish line sealed the deal. In this episode, Emilia Benton focuses on how she discovered the approach to marathoning that earned her a Boston Marathon qualifying time, and then how it all went down at last year's Boston Marathon. Benton is a well recognized journalist in the running world, with a particular focus on professional runners as well as runners and stories that have typically been underrepresented and overlooked by the media. As a runner, a big focus of Benton's has been marathons. She has run over a dozen of them, and for about a decade, her efforts focused on what many ambitious marathoners focus on: getting a Boston qualifying time, and then running the Boston Marathon.  Over the course of her marathon journey, Benton has become astutely aware of her own needs as a runner, and that not all conventional marathoning wisdom met her needs. She's been through a lot of trial and error, and she's found what does work for her, and she's learned how to trust that knowledge. Benton also found a coach who backed her approach. And that coach is Nell Rojas. Rojas is both a coach and she is also one of America's very best marathoners: among her many accolades, Rojas has twice been the top American finisher at the Boston Marathon.  Working with Rojas, Benton raced a terrific 2022 Houston Marathon to earn her BQ, and run at Boston the next year. Benton shares it all in this episode, and more! What shines bright here is that what works for one person in marathoning may not work for another. Every runner needs to discover their own path, which is exactly what Benton did. We also reviewed how George ran at the Disneyland Half Marathon, and we discussed why Michelle was forced to pull out of the Houston Marathon at the last minute. Finally, building on our conversation from the last episode, we had a bit more to say about influencers.

James Dodds joins me to help me recap a tough day at the Houston Marathon for me. It was my big goal race, but it didn't go how I hoped it would. Fortunately, the reasons for that are crystal clear, which I break down in the episode. I am still very proud of my day and even more hungry for what's to come. Thank you to everyone for your support in this journey. I will rest, recover, and get back to work! To redeem the offer from this episode's sponsor, use the code ROGUE15 for 15% off at Janji.com.

Finally! 2:59:12 at the 2024 Houston Marathon. 10 years after starting my marathoning career, I finally managed to break three hours in the marathon. This one was a long time coming. I'm so thankful for all the kind messages, comments and texts that I received afterward so it felt like a win for the community and the everyday runner. For this episode, I'm turning over the reins to my dear friend Ali Feller, the host of 'The Ali on The Run Show.' She is so much fun, the perfect person to joke around with and to get a chance to reflect on the journey. Apollo 13 may have had a problem, but the Houston Marathon and Half Marathon DOES NOT. What a freaking amazing race with so many implications for the Olympic Marathon Trials! Des was on the call in the booth, and Kara was following along from home. In this episode, they recap it all, discussing the men's and women's races for both distances.  This race had a little bit of everything with a smokin' time from a late entrant, a new American record in the half, the first L in history for Father Time, plus a number of Olympic qualifying ramifications. Houston is flat and fast, and the race always delivers. Des and Kara also discuss why an athlete might choose to do a race like this in the build-up to the Trials and what it might mean (or not) for their preparation. Plus, we get an update on Des's training and why she chose to be in the booth vs. on the start line for this one. Stay until the end for the first-ever Olipop top 5 with a juicy, double teaser from Kara about fun things to come. Pop an Olipop and enjoy!

Today's episode is extra special because I am just days away from running my eighth marathon in Houston. Now, I know not everyone is into running, but trust me, there are so many incredible parallels between running and life that you don't want to miss out on.In this episode, I reflect on my training cycle and share some powerful lessons I've learned along the way. From staying consistent and not giving up when things get tough, to embracing the process and finding joy in the journey, there's so much I've learned about myself as an athlete. I also talk about the importance of being your own biggest cheerleader and celebrating yourself in the small, in-between moments. Remember, you are capable of so much more than you give yourself credit for.So, whether you're a runner or not, this episode is packed with motivation and inspiration that will uplift you and remind you of the incredible person you are, both on AND off the run. 00:02:45 - Reflecting on the journey from hating running in high school to becoming a marathon runner.00:07:12 - Lessons learned from the training cycle, including the importance of consistency and staying focused on your own goals.00:11:34 - The realization that nobody cares about your goals as much as you do, but it's important to bring others along in the process.00:15:20 - Embracing the idea that you've already won by making the decision to pursue your goals, regardless of the outcome.ps: if you enjoyed this episode and found it helpful, I would greatly appreciate it if you could take a moment to leave a rating and review on Spotify or Apple Podcasts.
