In June 2023, ultra-marathon runner, Courtney Dauwalter set a woman's record finishing the Western States 100-mile race in 15 hours, 29 minutes, and 34 seconds. The previous record had stood for 11 years. When making the final turn toward the finish line, Dauwalter stated, “That was the moment I let myself actually believe that we had finished.” In John 19, Jesus cried out, “It is finished” (v. 30). A casual observer of Jesus' death could make the mistake of thinking that He was only referring to His earthly life. In other words, He was saying that His life was ending. However, that would be a shallow understanding of the significance of that phrase. According to theologian J. Dwight Pentecost, the term was used in Greek commercial life to signify “the discharge of a debt by a completed payment.” Jesus, by His life and death, accomplished what we as fallen humans could not. He lived a sinless life that pleased God in every respect. He died a painful death as payment for the sins of fallen humanity. “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Cor. 5:21). The punishment that we (being guilty and unrighteous) should have received, Jesus (being innocent and righteous) endured. He made the way to God available to all. Jesus completed His mission so that all who put their faith in Him may have eternal life (John 3:16). Since you've put your faith in Jesus, have you discovered your mission? And are you pursuing it? >> Just as Jesus finished His mission, let's strive to finish ours. As the writer to the Hebrews said, “[L]et us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith” (Heb. 12:1–2).See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ultramarathoner Courtney Dauwalter is no stranger to pushing her body and mind to the extreme — she's done it time and again as she pursues ultra-endurance goals. To prepare for long races (many of which exceed 100 miles), she uses a method of “intuitive training,” an approach in which she tunes in and listens to the messages from her body and mind. In this episode, Dauwalter shares what led her to embrace this mode of training and how she consistently pushes forward in these big efforts — even when it feels hard.   Find the episode highlights, get related resources and view the transcript for this episode at https://experiencelife.lifetime.life/podcast/embracing-intuitive-traininghttps://experiencelife.lifetime.life/podcast/embracing-intuitive-training   Have thoughts you'd like to share or topic ideas for future episodes? Lucy Bartholomew: You Don't Have to be Fast to be a Great Runner - R4R 278

The Running for Real Podcast

Although she's only 25, Lucy Bartholomew has been competing in ultras for a decade.  She ran her first, the Surf Coast Century 100k, alongside her father, and the successes kept coming. In 2017 she raced in fifteen ultras and was the first place female in eight of them.  The following year she ran her first 100 mile race, Western States, and finished third in the women's race.  All of those medals came at a cost, however, and for a time she lost her love of running.  Today she talks about how she regained her joy in the sport and now appreciates it more fully than she ever did before. “People asked what happened when the numbers went up, but when the numbers were so low that I was clearly unwell, no one asked any questions. In fact I was put on a pedestal.” Lucy participated in a project at a heart institute in 2018, the year she triumphed at Western States.  Her numbers were incredibly low - body fat under 12% and a heart rate so slow that it didn't register on the lab's equipment. The doctors were amazed and impressed; it was “like a hall of fame moment,” she recalls. But those levels were impossible to maintain, and when she went back a year later, the numbers were all higher.  She was stronger and healthier, but the reaction was, “oh, you're out of that elite athlete percentile and you're like, normal, God forbid.” “ I remember sitting there,” she says, “and just being like, my photo's just gone off the wall of fame, and I'm now this normal human, which is just not good enough for their standards.” “Overnight I gained 50,000 followers on Instagram.  So 50,000 people started following me and they started following a version of Lucy that was not sustainable.” After Lucy crossed the Western States' finish line in 2018, she suddenly had tens of thousands of new followers, who only knew her at her thinnest.  When she gained weight after the race, people's comments made her start to question herself. “It just puts a grain of sand into your mind, just kind of like, am I doing everything wrong?”  By the end of 2019, that grain of sand had become a sandcastle. “I think that I had lost the race of Western States before I had even begun.” Running Western States in 2018 had been a joyful experience. She remembers an article that was written about her, saying how super-stoked she was. “And I was,” she says, “I was just like, oh my God, I can't believe I'm in this position. I didn't come here to lead the race. I'm in front of Courtney freaking Dauwalter, like what is going on?”  When she ran it again the next year, everything had changed.  She was in the worst headspace of her life, and says, ”if I have one regret in my running career - I don't use the word regret - but I disrespected that race. I ran it, but I didn't love it. I despised the fact that I was out there. I endured it, which the previous year, I enjoyed it, not endured.” She hadn't looked at her watch for the first nine hours of the 2018 race  because she was loving it so much.  But in 2019, she says, “I looked at my watch for the first time probably a mile in and went, ‘is that all we've done?'”   “I don't love this anymore, and I've always said that I would stop the moment that I outrun my love for running.” In retrospect, she knew that she should have rested after the 2018 Western States, but she kept racing.  “Then the Christmas season I chilled out a little bit,” she says, “had my three days off for the year, God forbid.”  She resumed her schedule of back-to-back ultras in the new year.  Thinking about her racing calendar, she says, “I'm like, you are an absolute goose, Lucy. Who do you think you are, standing on all those start lines and doing that to your body?” “I learned from Western States that I won't stand on the start line if my head and heart aren't in it.”  Lucy had raced the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB) seven times and loved it, but when she arrived in Chamonix in 2019, she says, “I was like, I really just want to sit at a cafe and chill out, and sit in the river and do something else.  I just want to get the chairlift up. Like, do we have to run?” “To be a great runner, you have to have the ability to run but then also to be able to cheer on others.” She dropped out of the UTMB, but instead of sulking because “this was just turning into the absolute crumble of the year,” she decided to support the people who were racing.  She explains that when she was younger and would spectate as her dad raced, “I started to realize that you can be on the sideline and you can just be miserable about the fact that you're not in the race or you can be on the sideline and you can make people's day.”  She left Chamonix feeling proud that she'd respected herself enough to pull out of the race, and happy that “I was able to still be a part of the sport that I love, because whilst I wasn't loving the act of running, I love the philosophy and the community of running, and that's more important to me than any race ever.” “It was just the most beautiful experience that put me in a position where it was kind of like, this is what matters.” The lockdowns in Australia during the Covid-19 pandemic gave Lucy an opportunity to reset.  After only being allowed one hour of running a day, 5 km from her house, she was ready for a challenge. She and two friends decided to run the extremely difficult Larapinta Trail in the Northern Territory of Australia.  There were times on the trail that were “really, really tough,” but at the end, when the community came out for the finish, she realized that “this is why I love this sport and this is what I want to do. I want to tell stories and I want to show places to people and I want to create community.” The past few months presented Lucy with a different kind of challenge.  She was diagnosed with cancer in one eye and has undergone surgery to remove the tumor.  But the love and support she received when she revealed her diagnosis on social media have made her realize that people care about her as a person, not only about her appearance and her ability as a runner.  Now she's eager to get back out on the trails. “I can be a part of the community and I can be out where I love, in nature, and that's kind of what I've taken away from a really challenging few months.” Resources: Lucy's Instagram “Running Out,” the documentary about Lucy running the Larapinta Trail Lucy's website Lucy's podcast interview with Dylan Bowman   Thank you to Tracksmith, InsideTracker, and Zencastr for sponsoring this episode. On a brighter note, though, we described the amazing ultrarunning feats of Aleksandr Sorokin and Courtney Dauwalter, and we considered Camille Herron's latest pursuit.

They will work alongside multi award winning director, Martin Turner, who will head the broadcast team as Executive Producer.   The Collins Cup is a new race format modelled after the Ryder Cup, which will see teams of International, European and USA athletes pitted against one another and aims to create and leverage the excitement, rivalry, drama and personalities of the sport of triathlon to attract a wider fan base.   The 2021 Barkley Marathons Had No Finishers This year’s Barkley Marathons looked slightly different than previous editions. There were few international competitors due to pandemic-related travel restrictions, and because of this, a smaller field of runners (usually 40 runners line up), almost entirely Americans, took on the beast. Additionally, runners were required to get COVID-19 tests ahead of arrival, among other safety protocols.   A strong contingent of Barkley veterans lined up at the start, including Big’s Backyard champion Maggie Guterl, two-time Barkley Fall Classic winner Liz Canty, the only three-time Barkley finisher Jared Campbell, and multi-time Barkley attempter Jamil Coury. There was also a lot of excitement around Barkley virgins (first-timers) Courtney Dauwalter, Western States and Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc champion; and Luke Nelson, Tor des Geants finisher. Guterl, Canty, and Dauwalter were attempting to become the first woman to finish the Barkley.   The race started midweek, in order to deter spectators. Founder Gary “Lazarus Lake” Cantrell blew the conch at 2:03 a.m. ET on Thursday, March 18, and runners set off on the first loop an hour later, when Cantrell lit his cigarette. Runners dealt with rainy and foggy conditions throughout the entire event.     ‘It’s impossible to say’: Chris Froome unsure of when he’ll be ready to fight for GC in races again Chris Froome has admitted that he doesn’t know when he will be able to compete for victory again.   The Briton is continuing his comeback from serious injuries at this week’s Volta a Catalunya, but despite headlining Israel Start-up Nation’s team, he was dropped on the opening stage and finished 90th on stage two’s time trial, 2-05 down on former Ineos Grenadiers team-mate Rohan Dennis.   The upbeat and confident Froome has made no secret in declaring his intention to win a record-equalling fifth Tour de France, but asked by Cycling Weekly if that was still a realistic goal he could fulfil this season, he said: “I can’t really put any time on it. I am just taking it one week at a time at the moment.   “It’s just about following the process and I am not putting a timeline on it. Naturally, I would love to be ready for the Tour de France but I have to keep following the process and do what I can.”       What's New in the 303:   How Triathlon was Introduced to the World The History and Background of Triathlons A “triathlon” is defined as a three-part sports discipline comprising swimming, cycling, and running. The three sports are contested as a continuous event without a rest. The triathlon can be an individual or team event over varying distances.   Triathlon history dates back to the early 1970s and originated with the San Diego Track Club. The triathlon was designed to be an alternative to hard track training. The first triathlon event was held on September 25, 1974. Don Shanahan and Jack Johnstone are pioneers in the history of the triathlon. The San Diego Track Club sponsored the event. The triathlon then comprised a 10 km run, 8 km cycle, and 500 m swim. In 1989, the sport was awarded Olympic status and featured for the first time at the 2000 Sydney Olympics in Australia. Since then, the sport has grown in popularity. In fact, no other sport achieved Olympic status in such a short time. Over the next decade, the triathlon grew by leaps and bounds and soon gained recognition worldwide.   PRIMAL & 303 Endurance Indoor Cycling Class, led by Bill Plock Date: Every Wednesday till it warms up Time: 12:00 Noon MST Price: FREE Place: ZOOM (Click Here) ZOOM Passcode: H49LJK Join The Ride     Video of the Week: We NEED to talk about this IRONMAN “Update”       Upcoming Interviews: Michael Murphy is a motivational speaker, paralyzed athlete, and writer. Michigan becomes hub for pro running events Over the last week, Hansons-Brooks Original Distance Project hosted two major races in Shelby Township, Michigan, which produced world class fields: The Michigan Pro Half-Marathon and the Michigan Pro Ekiden. 2. Syringes found in Olympic champion Taoufik Makloufi’s equipment bag Algerian 2012 Olympic Gold medalist Taoufik Makloufi has found himself in an incriminating situation. 3. Courtney Dauwalter wins Big at Big’s Backyard Ultra Last week, in Bell Buckle, Tennessee, U.S. ultra runner Courtney Dauwalter ran 283 miles/456 km to claim the 2020 Big’s Backyard Ultra. The annual event requires runners to complete one 4.16667 mile (or 6.7km loop) every hour. The event continues until only one runner is standing. To win, Dauwalter ran 68 loops, tying the record set in 2018 by Johan Steele of Sweden. 4. Is this 60-year-old Irish guy our greatest living marathoner? 60-year-old Irish marathoner Tommy Hughes clocked another world record this week. The former Olympic marathoner already held the world record for fastest combined marathon for a father and son (take note that Hughes ran the faster of the two times) and the over-60s half marathon world record (1:11:09, run in September at the Antrim Coast Half Marathon). He can now add the over-60s marathon world record to his list of accolades. Running in the Down Royal Marathon, Hughes took six minutes off the previous record clocking 2:30:02. In a sport like ultrarunning, where wins are measured in minutes, crushing the competition by hours gets you noticed. But Courtney Dauwalter does running differently than almost everyone — and that just might be the key to her success. You know how you feel after a long run — sweaty, maybe a little snotty, and totally spent? Yeah, that’s not how Courtney Dauwalter looks when she finishes races. Most of the time, the 34-year-old ultrarunner has a big, toothy grin on the course and off. Dauwalter brought that same smiley energy to the GearJunkie podcast. And Dauwalter has plenty of reasons to be happy — she’s won the ultra world’s most prestigious races, including UTMB, Western States, and the Moab 240, to name a few. But it turns out she might be smiling all the time because she regularly hallucinates! Oh, and she basically wears pajama shorts on the racecourse. We learned all this and a whole lot more! Courtney talks about her "old school" method of training which includes a more intuitive focus rather than a specific training program.  Part of this includes consistency and adhering to AJW's "10-minute rule" Previous podcast with Courtney
