What a weekend! Nathan Green and UW turned heads at Penn but what about Ethan Strand and Gary Martin? Sabastian Sawe won London and staked his claim to #1 marathoner in the world although John Korir may want to argue. Former #1 Eliud Kipchoge put up a fine performance. Sifan Hassan's 4 month lay-off was too much as Tigist Assefa set a women's only world record and took home over $300,000. The Diamond League opened and Beatrice Chebet was better than ever, while Karsten Warholm got a 300m world record. What's up with Grant Holloway? And what about Faith Kipyegon's sub 4 attempt?
THE EVAN JAGER SPECIAL Evan Jager is one of the most decorated and accomplished runners in US Distance history. Evan is the American Record Holder in the Steeplechase, along with the Rio Olympic Silver Medalist in the Steeple and London World Championships Silver Medalist in the Steeple. On top of these feats, Evan has won a US title at the Steeplechase SEVEN times. He is one of the original members of Nike's Bowerman Track Club having dropped out of college (not to sound dramatic, he was just really fast and went pro) to follow Coach Jerry Schumacher. Evan holds PRs of 3:32 (1500m), 8:00.45 (Steeplechase), 7:35 (3000m), and 13:02 (5000m). Evan is a 2xUS Olympian. In today's conversation, Evan takes me through his life updates which includes moving to a new country, his reflections on his 2024 season, how to deal with disappointment, how much longer he plans to run for, lessons on how to become great at the sport of running, and so much more. This episode is a true treat. A lot of Evan Jager updates mixed with unparalleled wisdom from the legend himself. Tap into the Evan Jager Special. It's a rest day in Eugene, but Des and Kara aren't resting. They droppin' this freshy fresh recap episode like it's oh so hot. The Gs know what we talkin' about... Now, button up your pastel polos because this episode has a little bit of everything, including all of the laughs you expect and insights you can't get anywhere else. Kara starts with a behind-the-scenes description of calling races with NBC including the Snoop Dogg cameo during the men's steeplechase final. Did she play it cool or did she unleash her inner 17-year-old and lose her s**t when she met the D.O. Double G? Of course, you get recaps of all of the distance finals so far AND highlights from the sprint events, including hot takes on Grant Fisher's win, Drew Hunter's out-of-nowhere, top-4 finish, Hillary Bor's fall in the men's steeple, that holy Hocker kick from 250m, the near-photo-finish in the women's 5K, Parker Valby's boss run to potentially make the team, the bittersweet 800m final for the women, and so much more. Plus, you learn that NACAC isn't an insurance company or a duck call but actually the thing that might punch Evan Jager's ticket to the Olympics. [Can YOU say NACAC five times fast?] Then, you hear what Des and Kara thought of the 100m finals (we see you Sha'Carri, Noah, and Fred!), Noah Lyle's kit reveal, and the 16-year-old sprint phenom Quincy Wilson who might just make a relay team in Paris. This episode is everything we love about Des and Kara... listen in as your prep for the second half of the trials which starts on Thursday! On this week's show, we celebrate the amazing runs put up by Colin Sahlman and Elliott Cook at their NCAA track and field conference meets, rave about the SEC sprint action, praise Phoebe Gill and wonder if it's time for Evan Jager and Craig Engels to panic. Today on the podcast is the man, the myth, the legend, Evan Jager. For those who aren't familiar with Evan, he is undoubtedly the greatest American at the 3000m Steeplechase ever. Evan won a Silver Medal in the steeplechase at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, won Bronze at the 2017 World Championships in London; he has the American Record in the 3,000m Steeplechase with a time of 8:00.45, and get this, he holds the top 9 spots on the U.S. Top 10 All-Time 3000m Steeple list. In high school, he won everything there was to win in Illinois high school competition, claiming titles in XC, 1600m, and 3200m, as well as anchoring the State Record 4x800m. He then went to the University of Wisconsin for one year before deciding to move to Portland to go all-in on his running career, moving with Coach Jerry Schumacher and being one of the original members of the now Bowerman Track Club. In today's conversation, Evan goes through his upbringing in the sport from winning a Mustang by breaking five minutes in the mile to setting state records along the way. He then discusses his professional career and all the different elements, the highs, and the lows, that have shaped who he is today. We also touch on his past year of being a dad, the craziest BTC workouts he's witnessed, and wether or not he thinks he has the best hair in Track & Field. I loved this conversation and was thrilled to have made it happen. I hope you all enjoy it as much as we did having it. “I'm honestly so happy to get back to this level of running and feeling healthy running again and feeling like myself again. U.S. Champs was one of the most rewarding races of my career, honestly. With everything that I had been through the last four years, the deep, deep belief in myself never went away but there was a lot of doubt that I couldn't get past until I finally had the race result to prove it to me. That was that race. It did a lot for my confidence for the rest of the season for sure.” My guest for this episode is American record holder, Olympic silver medalist and world championship bronze medalist Evan Jager of the Nike Bowerman Track Club. I had him on as a guest back in 2019 as part of a panel with his teammates but this is the first time that he's on as a guest solo. Things are much different now. He missed much of the last four years due to injury but clawed his way back in 2022 to qualify for the World Championships with a runner-up finish at the USATF Outdoor Championships in June. He made the world championship final a month later and finished sixth overall. He shares his thoughts on that performance, the season overall and what he's learned throughout some of the lowest points in his career. We also touch on how he envisions the next two years going through the 2024 Paris Olympics if all goes well. SUPPORT THE SPONSORS GARMIN: Music. Training. Data. Evan Jager joins us on this episode of the Sweat Elite Podcast to discuss his journey in athletics. A founding member of the group that is now known as Bowerman Track Club – unarguably one of the most successful distance groups in the world – Evan has represented the US at both London and Rio Olympics, and holds the American record for the steeplechase with a time of 8:00:45. In this episode we discuss his choice to go pro at such a young age, his training with Bowerman under coach Jerry Schumacher, injuries, cross training through injuries and much more. Evan has gone from the youngest member of Bowerman when it was formed to being one of the group's senior members and it was great to hear about that process and so much of what he learnt along the way. Thank you to Evan for sharing so much of his time with us – enjoy!
What a weekend! The American record attempt in the mile by Cooper Teare and Cole Hocker may have come up short, but everything else exceeded expectations. Grant Fisher ran 12:53 for 5,000m with the "B" heat being won in 13:05, Gabriella DeBues-Stafford ran 14:31 and Elise Cranny 14:33 to crus the North American and American records. A virtual unknown, the Atlanta Track Club's Shane Streich got the American record at 1,000m, Yared Nuguse the collegiate 3000m record, not to mention the high school 800 record by Roisin Willis. We break it all down, talk about the doping scandal in figure skating and the retirement of convicted doper and World Champ Justin Gatlin. Plus, they shed some insight into bridging the gap between the running community's general population and those who are knowledgable about the sport after a few days with Heartbreak Hill Running Co. Individually, Moh puts listeners in his shoes for his bronze medal run from the recent IAAF World Championships in Doha. Ryan Hill shares where he's been in 2019 and how overcoming an Achilles injury was able to set him up for 2020. Evan Jager details his injury-plagued year and what it was like to miss out on the world championships. All of that and more including the final four questions that we ask every guest, which yielded some incredibly funny anti-doping stories from the guys. ❤️ Support for this episode of the CITIUS MAG Podcast comes from THE FEED. Running takes a toll on the body, and runners are notorious for not taking care of the inevitable aches and pains that come from training. Too often, we push ourselves too far or ignore lingering pain until it's too late. This pain sometimes results in physical therapy, or even worse - being forced to stop running altogether, something runners HATE! I know this cycle all too well. About three years ago, I was battling some of those injuries, while preparing to train for a marathon. I wanted to find somebody to help me “fix” those pains. But more than that, I tried to figure out how to eliminate them forever. This quest led me to massage therapist, injury prevention specialist and strength coach, Amy Brown. That's Amy, she's worked with a plethora of athletes from novices like myself, to elite runners and other endurance athletes across the board. Olympians like Kara Goucher, Shalane Flannigan, and Evan Jager, to name a few. She's a master when it comes to helping athletes of all levels, perform at their best. Today on the show, we're talking about injury prevention and strength training with Amy Brown. Amy and I talk about how she can help prevent injury, and she also shares four simple exercises ALL of us can do at home to stay injury free and run stronger Today's show is very practical, and no matter if you're a hardcore runner, training for a big race or someone who just runs our 5K fun runs for beer, there's valuable information here for everyone, so keep listening!
