American runner Shelby Houlihan celebrated winning a silver medal in the 3000m at the world indoor championships after returning from a four-year doping ban. The ban stemmed from a positive test for nandrolone, which Houlihan attributed to a contaminated pork burrito, a claim ultimately rejected by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. This outcome sparked considerable debate, as many found similarities between her case and others where athletes received lighter penalties. Following a difficult period of adjusting to life without competitive running, Houlihan expressed hope that her recent success would lead to sponsorship opportunities and looked ahead to potentially competing in the upcoming world outdoor championships. Despite the challenges of her ban, Houlihan stated her determination to see what she could still achieve in her career. The United States topped the medal table at the championships.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this week's Spotlight, we swing the light from cycling to doping, via trans news updates and some success stories from our Discourse members. We kick off with a chat about whether we've been too obsessed with power numbers, and not talking enough about speed, as pointed out by Christoph Roodhooft of Alpecin's pro-cycling team. We discuss what it means to be an "economic cyclist", which allows Gareth to propose the concept of "physiological frugality", which we are 100% sure will take over from "durability" as the next-big-thing in elite cycling by 2027!We also chat briefly about positive fuelling experiences shared with us by Discourse members, who've managed to push their energy intakes up thanks to the experts we've heard from on the pod. We check in on some controversial topics, including the transgender athletes in sport debate, where a new paper, a legal decision and an imminent IOC election are all in the spotlight, and finally, we briefly discuss Shelby Houlihan's own words about her doping defence in an interview with Letsrun.com.Show notesAs mentioned, Discourse is our VIP Community where you can share bicarb recipes, tales of fuel success, and a whole lot more! Jason and Kevin discuss Josh Hoey, Nikki Hiltz, Hobbs Kessler, Shelby Houlihan, Grant Holloway and all the other news makers from this year's USATF Indoor Championships. Then, the guys chat about Jacob Kiplimo possibly breaking two hours in the marathon, a trio of boys going sub four minutes in the mile and the state of track and field on television.
On today's show, we have a lot to talk about. Josh Hoey just ran 1:43.24 for 800 meters—indoors. That's the second-fastest time ever run indoors, behind only Wilson Kipketer. We'll break down what this means for the American 800m scene, how he's addressed skepticism that inevitably comes with a performance like this and whether Hoey is suddenly a legitimate outdoor medal contender.Hobbs Kessler doubled at USAs, taking both the 3000m and 1500m titles like it was just another weekend at the track. We'll talk about what impressed us the most about Kessler's double, how the men's middle distances are shaping up for 2025 and why it was OK for Cooper Teare and Cole Hocker to skip out.And then there's the "rivalry" that was quickly dispelled by the athletes – Nikki Hiltz vs. Shelby Houlihan. Just a few years ago, Houlihan was untouchable. Then came the four-year ban, and now, she's back—and already battling for the top spot. In the 3000m, Houlihan got to the front, squeezed the pace, and dared anyone to come with her. And Nikki Hiltz? They came with her. And then passed her. In the final strides of the women's 3000m, Hiltz outkicked Houlihan, officially stamping themselves as America's best championship racer in the middle distances.Plus, we'll get into the results of the sprints and why the 2025 World Indoor Championships in Nanjing might be one of the weirdest global meets we've ever seen—between withdrawals, travel logistics, and a US team that's missing some of its biggest stars.Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on Instagram SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSKETONE-IQ: Level up your training with Ketone-IQ – a clean shot of energy with no sugar or caffeine. In this show, I break down and analyze comments from my recent interview with one of the greatest female middle distance runners in the world, the American record holder Shelby Houlihan. It was a pleasure to drive up to Flagstaff, Arizona to meet Shelby at her high altitude training camp as she prepares for her long awaited comeback after a ridiculous four year suspension for a very questionable doping violation. In our interview, which you can listen to here (or click below under "links"), we talked about the tragedy she experienced when she had her career taken from her right in the middle of her prime, right as she was getting ready for the Olympics—then having to sit for four years. You will learn about the nuances of how that whole incident went down and the injustice of the anti-doping system in the world of elite sports. Of course we have to keep these sports clean, but can there be room for some imperfections and some victims too? You will also hear about the many aspects of what it's like to be an elite athlete, how Shelby expanded her horizons and her competitive disposition to try to become a more well-balanced person by getting her master's degree in sports psychology, and much more. Shelby said such amazing, thoughtful comments during the interview, and I think so many of her comments are truly profound insights that will help you as you navigate the very difficult challenge of designing an optimal training program that balances stress and rest (and also keeping your ego in check) as you pursue ambitious competitive goals. These big picture insights are especially helpful now, as the biohacking scene is currently getting a little out of hand—focusing on a regimented, high-tech, glossy, glitzy approach towards pursuing longevity, instead of just covering the basics—and the Blue Zones movement is getting torched by The New York Times’ revelation of the manipulation behind their messaging and how they drew inaccurate conclusions from the data they gathered. It all comes down to basics and consistency, so this show will highlight important insights about Shelby’s approach, from details of her weekly training patterns to how she is deliberate about what she does to unwind and rest during the off competitive season, and how she generally balances the physiological impact training has on her body. We have a news-heavy Spotlight for you this week, with stories from athletics, cycling and Rugby League to discuss. Shelby Houlihan's return from a doping ban has Gareth wondering about second-chances and forgiveness for dopers? Cycling's authorities met at the Cyclocross World Champs in Lievin and agreed to regulate the use of carbon monoxide and to prevent its misuse for performance enhancement. We talk about that decision and its details, and how it's a positive step, despite some recognized limitations. Cycling safety is also under the spotlight, with the tragic deaths of cyclists around the world a reminder of the perils of the sport, particularly during training. Finally, Rugby League is considering a change to how players are sent off for high tackles, with a proposal to give yellow cards only when the player on the receiving end of the illegal tackle fails an off-field test indicating possible concussion. Proposed as a means to "get more consistency", Ross explains that if anything, it introduces a (for now) random, unpredictable outcome variable in the decision that will compromise consistency, and may detract from player welfare and behaviour change initiatives. But first, we kick off the show with our Discourse-first birthday announcement, a thanks to all our fabulous followers, and then revisit last week's Spotlight on carbohydrate requirements to explain why elites need to fuel at rates the rest of us needn't aspire to emulate.Join DiscourseIf you fancy a bit of the coaching, sports science and sports news conversations with our amazing members, consider a small donation to become a Patron of the site, and get access to our Discourse community, where you can join like-minded fans and sports enthusiasts to keep the conversation going.Show notesThe paper Ross alluded on the show, that gives an example of relative carb and fat use during exerciseArticle on the proposal to give yellow cards only when the ball carrier fails the head injury assessment in Rugby League Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Jack, Joel, and Tess record episode 132 at Tess' Brunswick East studio for the first time ever. They kick off the episode by discussing all the latest running news from Marugame, Boston, and Beppu before diving into the listeners' favourite segments. TRAINING WEEKS Joel's training week starts with a bang... or rather, a snooze button. After sleeping through his alarm, he's forced to join the Pulse crew for a Tuesday night session. He then hits the boulevard for a Friday threshold run with Paul, the Balance Runner. Jack shares details of his track session at Sandringham as he prepares for his indoor season, followed by a typical Thursday and Saturday threshold and hill rep session. Tess, still recovering from her marathon, is slowly finding her rhythm but manages to piece together a solid week of training as well. THE BIG Q Tess shares a conversation from her Ferny Creek long run with the crew: Are 20-week marathon blocks superior to 8-week training blocks? Spoiler alert: The answer likely involves some form of suffering either way. GIVE SOME KUDOS Joel gives kudos to the ‘blue doctor' — AKA swimming in the ocean immediately post-long run. Jack gives a shoutout to the scenic Lilydale to Warburton trail, and Tess recommends one of her favorite shoes from last year. TWHSOITWTWATSA Jack kicks off the segment with a questionable Flotrack series on Shelby Houlihan. Tess questions Andy Buchanan's watch choice for Marugame, and Joel's choice is something you'll have to see with your own eyes on FTK's Instagram story... "I could be wrong, but I know I'm not." - Kara Goucher. You know it's a good episode when Kara drops that quote. In this episode, Des and Kara cover a topic that you DID ask for. They give you their hot takes on the return of Shelby Houlihan from her 4-year ban. As you might expect, it is complicated, so find some paper towels and put them under those armpits... it gets warm-ish in here over the second half of the episode. First, they recap an amazing weekend in Houston with their perspectives on all of the races, including those that aren't getting enough attention - Erika Kemp's 2:22 and Weini Kelati's second American record. And yes, they give Conner Mantz his flowers too while covering "the shove" and talking about what his race might mean for his confidence in future marathons. Can he be the one to break through for the American men in a World Major? Then, they shift the discussion to Shelby Houlihan's return covering everything from their initial reactions to her ban and now to the media coverage of her "comeback." As you might expect, this is a difficult topic to cover, but Des and Kara do not shy away from discussing all sides of it. Agree or not, the hope is that we can all turn now to just seeing her race. As usual, this episode ends with a top 5 that includes a special shout-out to the new Glycerin 22 coming soon from Brooks. You can pre-order yours here to support them and the pod: https://www.brooksrunning.com/en_us/womens/shoes/road-running-shoes/glycerin-22/120434.html?dwvar_120434_color=020
Welcome to this special episode of the B.rad podcast, where Brad Kearns visits American record holding middle distance runner Shelby Houlihan at her high-altitude training camp in Flagstaff, AZ. This is an incredibly powerful and in-depth discussion about all aspects of what it's like to compete in elite level sport. Shelby has just completed her four-year layoff from a highly unjust and controversial doping suspension and is returning to competition as the 2025 US and world indoor season approaches. This wide-ranging discussion is a master class on developing the ideal perspective and mindset of a champion athlete. Shelby has been through hell like few other athletes - her livelihood and status in elite sport taken away in an instant with the four-year suspension. Please watch our first interview where we discuss the details of her doping violation and her legal case and the incredible injustice and lack of due process that athletes face if they test positive. We recap it a bit in this show, and You’ll learn about the nuanced dynamics of doping in high level sports., how the system works, and how we might do things better and more fairly. You learn about how a champion athlete has to cultivate a singular focus and narrow mindset but how this can lead to disappointment and frustration when you attach too much of your self esteem to results. its double edge sword but we talk about the sweet spot where you can still be a vicious competitor but also a well-balanced person. You learn about how Shelby spent her off time still training at a high level, doing some incredible time trials, getting a masters in sports psych, and making a great effort to broaden her perspective about life and sport. You learn about the business of T&F, a somewhat unpleasant topic when you realize how even the greatest athletes have very tenuous career prospects. This is a woman who has dedicated her life to elite sport and it was an honor to see such amazing resilience and maturity as she tells her incredible story. You don't have to be a track fan to deeply appreciate this interview. Please listen to the entire riveting two hours as we get the lowdown from someone who is about to go wild on the track and get some more records and titles. TIMESTAMPS: Shelby Houlihan has quite a story to tell about her experience with the anti-doping system. [02:02] After her four-year suspension, Shelby is looking forward to coming back into competition, although she is feeling frustrated. [05:15] For her comeback she still doesn’t want to use super spikes. She wants to run fast naturally not faster because of her shoes. [08:20] There are people, the haters, that don’t believe Shelby’s story. [14:06] Track and Field journalism field is rather small. Have they treated Shelby fairly? [18:09] Even when disqualified, Shelby ran because it was her identity. [20:57] Teaching sports psychology is a good place for her with all her experience. [25:52] A lot of athletes have a hard time with retirement….trying to figure out who they are without competition. [29:57] Has Shelby been able to cheer her friends on even though she, herself, isn’t running? [32:43] The biggest problem with elite athletes is over-training. [38:20] There are many injured athletes that return to competition too soon. If you rush it, you’re going to pay later. [54:48] Upon Shelby’s suspension, she lost her sponsors. [57:53] Unfortunately, some other elite athletes were not supportive of Shelby. Most athletes don’t understand what happens with the testing system. [01:02:11] Many athletes are doping and fans like to watch the sports. [01:08:51] How is Shelby going to handle the comeback? She hopes it will still be fun. [01:12:35] How will the crowd receive her? [01:16:24] How did she handle the fact that she knew she was clean, but had accept the suspension? [01:18:58] How is the team environment with her comeback? [01:22:01] Why are shoe sponsors so important over other products? [01:31:24] The Beer Mile World Championship was a fun challenge. [01:31:41] How much importance does she put on breaking her records? How does aging effect the athlete? [01:42:54] What does Shelby’s training week look like? We brought some joyful and fluid-tastic vibes to this great episode! The main topic involved us picking our jaws off the floor as records were absolutely annihilated at the JFK 50 Mile, America's oldest ultramarathon. We have some inside info on how David Sinclair set the record, which we think could be Ultra Performance of the Year. Plus we worship the queen, Rachel Drake. Why are we seeing record after record get smashed at every major race? The answer likely lies at the intersection of training, shoes, and most of all--fueling. We also talked about a breakthrough new study from the Boston Marathon. Researchers found that the prevalence of low energy availability indicators was associated with worse performance and health outcomes. Find your strong, and you will find your fast! And this one was full of fun topics! Other topics: David recording through fluid adversity, Megan taking one for the team because she loves the podcast mornings, the "Shoot Your Shot" mini-documentary on the Javelina 100, the frontiers of lubrication, lessons from Ryan Sullivan's incredible long-term progression, Shelby Houlihan returning from her ban, why we want to uplift forgiveness, a question on embracing competition, and Listener Corner. Shelby Houlihan returns in less than four months. On January 15 2025 her suspension will be lifted. And she can compete against the world's best once again. As she starts her buildup to the redemption tour, I wanted to get her back on the podcast to spill the tea on all she's been up to and how she's planning on coming back. Shelby is a 13xUS National Champion, a 2016 Olympian, and the American Record Holder in the 1500m where she ran that in the 2019 World Championships in Doha where she placed 4th. She is also a World-Record Holder in the Women's 4x1500m. She holds PRs of 1:59.92 (800m), 3:54.99 (1500m), and 14:23.92 in the 5k. In college, she was the first student at Arizona State University to win a national individual title in the outdoor 1,500. Shelby was a 12-time NCAA Division I All-American, the second most in Arizona State history, and an NCAA Track champion. In today's conversation, Shelby takes me through her plans to return to track, a potentially world-record attempt as her first race back, what brand/group she's joining, her takes on supershoes and why she's never worn them, and an in-depth look at her training. You won't want to miss this one. Tap into the Shelby Houlihan Special. If you enjoy the podcast, please consider following us on Spotify and Apple Podcasts and giving us a five-star review! I'm so pleased to welcome Mark Allen back to the show! Mark, aka “The Grip,” is also the greatest triathlete of all time, and he's here today to share many of his unique insights and spiritual approach to grueling endurance sports. Mark, a contemporary of mine from the triathlon circuit, is now one of the most prominent coaches in the triathlon scene today. Get ready for a wide-ranging conversation that covers everything from Mark's early racing days and the things he would do differently knowing what he knows now to the adjustments he had to make at the end of his career to doping in elite sports. As the conversation winds along, you'll get to hear more of the spiritual side of Mark that he has become known for as he talks about the many years he has spent working with a Huichol healer and the retreats they put on together, as well as what he has learned from the time he has spent with other native Huichol people in Mexico. Even if you are not a triathlete, the insights you will get from this show can be applied to all our peak performance goals in life! TIMESTAMPS: Mark Allen is one of the most prominent coaches in the triathlon circuit. What would he have done differently? [00:47] After the break from Covid, the competition has really been fired up. [05:43] This year in Kona, the women had their separate race on Thursday, while the men raced on Saturday. [08:02] Mark and Brad discuss doping in the profession. Shelby Houlihan got a bad deal. [12:51] Many athletes don't understand the best way to recover. [15:56] How do you take that fitness and then continue to build it without burning yourself out? [21:05] What does overreaching mean? [24:17] The signs of exhaustion from overreaching are (1) Slowing down in your swimming and (2) having a hard time getting your heart rate up, even though you feel like you're pushing really hard, and (3) You can be out for a run and get full of lactate. [29:25] What is different that the guys now are breaking 8 hours in the Ironman? [31:34] If Mark could do something different, what changes would he make? [41:59] One of Mark's training ideas was actually training his mind to deal with boredom. [48:13] If the aspect of recovery had progressed as much as the aspects of training, we'd see more amazing results. [51:03] Are we still battling the influence of the ego or the constraints of technology? [57:10] In today's world there is no downtime with social media. [01:03:55] Since Mark's last big race in 1995, what has his fitness journey been? Without consistency, as you age, your body falls off quickly. [01:06:58] Anybody out there who is not exercising at all or as much as they want, you know it doesn't feel good. Be consistent with your exercise. Don't back off. [01:16:20] Mark spends time among the primitive population of Huichol Indians in Central Mexico, and has learned a whole new way of living. I made it all the way to 2023 without getting Covid, but in January I was forced to check out from my everyday life, sleep more, and rest as I recovered after testing positive. I even broke my six-year long streak of performing my morning movement routine every single morning without fail, but this gave me a wonderful chance to reflect on my health and my habits with fitness and food. In this Q&A episode, I talk about if fasting is okay when you have an illness, how to feed your dog in the healthiest way possible, my favorite nutritious carbs for peak performance, and how I feel about doping in sports—particularly in regards to my previous guest Shelby Houlihan's situation. Enjoy the show! TIMESTAMPS: Whenever Brad has an illness, he tries not to eat much thinking that the body can heal itself faster when giving the digestive system a break. [00:47] The first question is from Jordan asking about how to improve his dog's diet. [08:46] Another listener asks about how Brad prepares his intake of liver. He chops it into little pieces and freezes them. [12:55] David De la Rosa asks how do I feed myself during training racing for a long endurance event? Endurance athletes out there should be consuming a ton of fresh fruit and other nutritious, easy-to-digest carbs that work for them. [15:48] Brenna criticizes Brad's comments in the podcast with Shelby Houlihan about her ingesting of a banned substance. [19:47] David from Spain is working on his diet and is concerned about adding carbs. Brad's response is when you have good metabolic health that equals metabolic flexibility, you are going to be able to burn whatever sources of energy you need to thrive. [30:35] David also asks about his training approach. With his very active training approach, he's wondering about switching his tempo runs and intervals with a less stressful Maffetone style.
