If you've been following us for a while, you know that Matt & Andrea often experience shoes completely differently, so on this episode they get together to compare & contrast their experiences in Nike's major overhaul to the OG of supershoes: the Vaporfly 4. With a shorter stack height and narrowed down platform, this nimble racer offers a vastly different ride from its big sibling, the Alphafly 3. Andrea loved Vaporfly 3, so how will she feel about the updates? Matt's often found the Vaporflys too unstable, so will that continue? Tune in to see if you side more with Andrea or Matt! Thomas and Karl are off galavanting in Kenya, so we recorded this on a Friday, which is always questionable. We cover the usual nonsense, talk about the Nike Vaporfly, and petition some brand, somewhere, to take us up on our offer to have a real life unicorn in Boston. Robbe also gives us his review of the King of Moab, a trail running documentary that– spoiler alert– is pretty great. There's also a lot of shoe talk at the end, so go listen wherever you enjoy your favorite podcasts.SAYSKYExperience the premium quality and unique design of the SAYSKY collection. On this episode, Nathan and Matt have the privilege of interviewing Dr. Wouter Hoogkamer about his research on super shoes and how they affect running performance. They discuss what makes a super shoe "super" (the plate, the geometry, the foam, or all three?). They also discuss Wouter's latest writing and research on getting the best results from running research trials. They get Wouter's take on training in super trainers/plated shoes and how they may effect biomechanics. Be sure to listen to this fascinating discussion on super shoes and research! Dr. Wouter Hoogkamer is a researcher focusing on biomechanics and energetics of human locomotion and running. He currently leads the UMASS Integrative Motion Lab. If you've been in the running shoe space, and are listening to this podcast you likely have heard of one of his most “famous” studies colloquially known as “The 4% Study”, which looked at the original Nike Vaporfly and produced results that gave the shoe it's name. Beyond research, he is a runner and ultra-runner himself and was the founder of the Trail Ultra Mountain Alliance. ¿Y si no somos atletas profesionales?.
In the lead up to Outlaw triathlon events, this is probably the most asked question. We get plenty of others and so this week it's time for something a little different. In the run up to the Outlaw events I normally present webinars to outline the best training approach and answer common questions. This time we are doing this as podcast and I'm joined by Outlaw ambassador Dan Ward. Dan will be asking me the questions, some based on his curiosity around his own training and others on behalf of other potential Outlaws who have submitted their questions via social media. (TIP! This advice is still relevant, even if you are doing a non-Outlaw long distance triathlon.) Some of the questions include: How much training should I be doing each week for the Full? Do I need a coach? Does Z2 training really work? How do I know I'll make the swim cut off? Road bike or TT? Will wearing Nike VaporFly help me get a faster run time? I need to lose 10kg before race day. What's the best diet to help me do this? Will the results go onto Strava? I don't like wearing a watch on race day. To find out more about Dan Ward please visit these social media channels. YouTube - Triathlondan Instagram - heyyydw You can also find out how much training he is really doing on Strava We still have places for some Outlaw events. Outlaw Half Holkham (9 July) is the British Middle Distance Championships and is likely to be very popular. Enter soon HERE. It's still possible to enter Outlaw Nottingham (30 July), Outlaw X (3 Sept), or if you fancy something faster, try the new Outlaw Sprint on 2 Sept. Nell Rojas joins the CITIUS MAG Podcast for the first time after finishing as the top American at the Boston Marathon for the second time in a row. The Boulder-based running coach placed 10th over in a new personal best of 2:25:57 – which took 75 seconds off her time from her sixth place finish last October in Boston. In this episode, we go through her build-up to this race which wasn't perfect and then the decision-making process into leaving her contract with Adidas that she signed in April to run in a pair of Nike VaporFly shoes. We touch on the conversation around unsponsored runners since her decision to ditch the contract has been a topic of discussion on Twitter and message boards. Plus: Why representation matters for her as a Latina on the start line of these major races, where she sees herself in the U.S. marathoning scene + much more. Outside of running, she's a strength and running coach based in Boulder Colorado. For this episode, I'm joined by David Melly for a crossover episode with the Run Your Mouth Podcast. Endurance News: Nike Vaporfly and Tokyo 2020 Olympics Controversy On January 31, 2020, World Athletics, the governing body for professional track and field,[3] issued new guidelines concerning shoes to be used in the upcoming Tokyo 2020 Olympics.[4] These updates came to answer the complaints many people have had concerning the technology in the Nike Vaporfly running shoes. These complaints have been happening since 2017-2018 but World Athletics did not give a more clear answer until January 2020.[5] The major changes of these guidelines state that the "sole must be no thicker than 40mm" and that "the shoe must not contain more than one rigid embedded plate or blade (of any material) that runs either the full length or only part of the length of the shoe. The plate may be in more than one part but those parts must be located sequentially in one plane (not stacked or in parallel) and must not overlap".[4] The components of the shoes are not the only thing that had major changes; starting April 30, 2020, "any shoe must have been available for purchase by any athlete on the open retail market (online or in store) for a period of four months before it can be used in competition". 1/1/2020 - The Nike Vaporfly Just Survived a Potential Ban World Athletics (track and field's governing body, formerly the International Association of Athletics Federations) made its highly anticipated announcement on the regulation of running shoe technology. Although there had been rumors in recent weeks—aggravated by several bogus news stories—that the organization was planning on making Nike's coveted Vaporfly Next% racing shoe illegal in elite competition, this does not appear to be the case. Rather, World Athletics will be prohibiting the use of shoe prototypes in competition. (This is a good idea.) The new rule states: “From 30 April 2020, any shoe must have been available for purchase by any athlete on the open retail market (online or in store) for a period of four months before it can be used in competition. If a shoe is not openly available to all then it will be deemed a prototype and use of it in competition will not be permitted.” Additionally, World Athletics has issued an “immediate moratorium” on any shoe that has a heel stack height of more than 40 millimeters and more than “one rigid embedded plate or blade (of any material).” Placing a limit on sole thickness has been one of the proposed solutions on how to best regulate shoe technology going forward. The breakthrough innovation of Nike's original Vaporfly 4% shoe, released in 2017, was that it combined a carbon fiber plate with an unusually thick (over 30 millimeters) super lightweight Pebax foam midsole. Some fear that if this design development goes unchecked, racing shoes might veer towards the farcical; imagine future runners bounding along in airy platform shoes. Make no mistake, the new 40-millimeter limit is not arbitrary. The maximum stack height of Nike's Vaporfly Next% is usually reported at around 36 millimeters, and therefore sneaks under the new threshold. However, the shoes that Eliud Kipchoge wore when he became the first man to run a marathon in under two hours last year in Vienna (code name: “AlphaFly”) are potentially well over the limit, although Nike has not provided any data since the shoe hasn't been released. 12/23/21 - World Athletics has approved new shoe rules and regulations for competition. The new rules have brought a major update to the future of the sport, as athletes will not be allowed to wear shoes that have over a 20mm stack height during competition. This rule is set to be implemented in November 2024, which is after the Paris Summer Olympics and the 2024 Diamond League season. The previous rule was 20mm stack height for sprint and hurdle events up to 400m and 25mm for events 800m and above. The sport has seen a technological revolution in footwear over the past 10 years, but with new innovations come challenges to maintain a fair level of competition. Dr. Wouter Hoogkamer is the principle author of one of the most important pieces of running shoe research ever published. In 2018 his paper “A Comparison of the Energetic Cost of Running in MarathonRacing Shoes” was published in Sports Medicine, and for the first time revealed exactly what was going on with the Nike Vaporfly, the first of the so called Super Shoes,Wouter's story starts way before that though, and, it is one of the most interesting we have aired on SHOEphoria.Like Kevin Fallon from Speedland, Wouter started his professional and academic life as an engineer. Basically, the take home message from all of this is that being good at maths can turn you into a running shoe superstar!Wouter was a very accomplished scientist long before he started working on the Nike project. He found his niche in biomechanics, and developed a lifetime interest in, if not passion for, energetics. Initially this had nothing to dom with running shoes, but simply looked at the energetics of uphill running. This led him into several projects involving cycling, and then an important step into neurophysiology, trying to unravel some of the mysteries of stroke and Parkinson's Disease.Eventually Nike came knocking on his door, and Wouter began working on a project dedicated to the development of a shoe to take an athlete under 2 hours for the marathon. Working with another iconic researcher in Rodger Kram, bot scientists thought this achievement, if possible at all, was at least 5-10 years in the future.History has now recorded that on October 13th 2019, the great Eliud Kipchoge ran the marathon distance in 1:59:40.. in a Nike prototype shoe codenamed the Alphafly, that Wouter Hoogkamer helped to develop. Not a bad thing to have on your CV!Despite this, Wouter always felt like an “outsider looking in” in relation to Nike, and much of his subsequent understanding of how the Nike super shoes work has been achieved via reverse engineering, and without the assistance of Nike!Wouter has now moved from Colorado to Amherst, where he heads up the University of Massachusetts Integrative Locomotion Lab (UMILL) and is currently working on new projects with…. PUMA.Well, we cannot wait to see how that turns out!Wouter Hoogkamer on SHOEphoria, don't miss it!
Nike Vaporfly, Nike Alphafly, Asics Metaspeed, and Adidas Adios Pro are the running shoes with the most buzz around them, but who's the fastest? And how do the likes of Brooks, Hoka, and New Balance stack up? Dr Dustin Joubert (@labratrundown) has done the study every runner has been waiting for - the Super Shoe Study. Dr Dustin tested twelve runners using seven carbon plated "super shoes" and a control shoe (Asics Hyperspeed). Each runner was tested four times in each shoe.
The Nike Vaporfly and its descendants, the Next% and Alphafly, have revolutionized the running landscape. In recent years we have seen new world records set in the men's and women's 10k, half-marathon and marathon. Many other elite runners have set personal bests in the now-dubbed "super-shoes". We have multiple independent studies showing improvements in running economy of around 4% on average. With all the disruption, the IAAF has finally had to step in and update their regulations on running shoes. Now that these "super-shoes" are more widely available, the question on every runner's lips is "will they work for me?". Our guest today has been attempting to answer that question. Dr Hébert-Losier recently published a study in The Journal of Sport and Health Science in which she tested the Nike Vaporfly 4% on a group of recreational runners, like us! Kim Hébert-Losier is a Senior Lecturer and Researcher in Applied Biomechanics at the University of Waikato, New Zealand. She is also a Physiotherapist and an accomplished runner, having qualified for the Boston Marathon twice. She joins me on the show today to shed a little more light on what these "super-shoes" are, how they work and whether the Nike Vaporfly / Alphafly can really make you a faster runner. We're excited to announce that we're re-launching the Sweat Elite Podcast! We explain why in the intro of this episode before discussing the hot topic of the Nike Vaporfly's – the racing shoe that has taken the running world by storm over the last couple of years. Germany's Phlipp Baar (2:16 Marathoner) joins Founder of Sweat Elite Matt Fox to discuss the topic in detail. Also discussed on the episode is a bit about Philipp's training and the way he has handled some injuries of late. The Nike Vaporfly's have been worn by a very high percentage of the top 10km-Marathon times recently, including by Eliud Kipchoge and Brigit Kosgei in breaking both the mens and womens Marathon World Records in the last 2 years. Stay tuned to the Sweat Elite podcast – coming up soon are episodes about our experience attending the INEOS159 Challenge, as well as an episode on how to get out of a “Mental Rut” (a common issue runners experience when they stagnate in training and racing) and enjoy running again.
