In June 2020, barrister Sarah Phillimore noticed that an anonymous Twitter account was boasting that she now had a 'record for life' of  her 'hate' as her tweets on Twitter were now recorded by the police as 'hate incidents' under what was then the 'Hate Crimes Operational Guidance'. According to this guidance, the police must record what anyone tells them about being a victim of 'hate' - you can even make a report on behalf of someone else that you think is victim! The police aren't allowed to question the motives or the rationality of the person reporting. 'Hate' is given a very wide definition, to include 'dislike' and 'unfriendliness'. This is the stuff of a Stasi-like police state, with informants and a society that turns against each other, Sarah is asking you for your support to challenge the guidance on police reporting of 'non-crime hate incidents', check out her case on CrowdJustice.

Guitarist and KISS co-writer Scott Van Zen sits down with the guys this week for a long-form talk about his life, guitar playing, and the experience of writing with our favorite demon, Gene Simmons. In this hour-plus discussion, Scott talks about his early years in central California. Inspired by a wide cross-section of guitarists ranging from Jeff Beck to Johnny Winter to Ted Nugent to Eddie Van Halen; Scott Van Zen worked his way through the ranks to become one of the California's best guitarists in the 1980's and 90's. A musical partnership with singer Ken Tamplin would lead Van Zen to a friendship with KISS' Gene Simmons. In this discussion, Scott talks about Gene's influence not only in songwriting, but in business. His advice has paid dividends for the guitarist over the years. Scott Van Zen Scott Van Zen penned numerous songs with Gene Simmons, noteable among them 'Spit' for 1992's Revenge album and 'Hate,' 'In My Head,' 'Seduction of the Innocent,' for 1997's Carnival of Souls album. Also in this episode, Scott shares a story about an unknown contribution to 1998's Psycho Circus album that hasn't been revealed until now. We wanted to get into something polarizing and divisive this week. Mission accomplised...   Famed producer Toby Wright sits down with Chris and Aaron this week for part 1 of a 2 part Albums Unleashed special covering KISS' 1997 release Carnival of Souls.   Shelved in early 1996 by Mercury Records due to KISS taking a left turn at Reunionville, Carnival of Souls leaked shortly thereafter and was bootlegged in large numbers necessitating an official release in October of 1997.   In this hour-plus part 1 episode, Toby Wright recounts his initial meetings with Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley about the "new direction" in which the band was deciding to head, his impressions of the songs being written for the album, and the tracking of basic tracks. The track by track discussion in this episode includes Toby's memories of the creation of songs 'Hate,' 'Rain,' 'Master & Slave,' 'Childhoods End,' ' I Will Be There,' and 'Jungle.' Discussion of tension between Simmons & Stanley over arrangements is also included as well as Wright's memories of a tense mixing session with Simmons in regards to his bass part in one of the songs and how, due to the co-production credit on the album, politics and diplomacy had to be in delicate balance.   It's the first half of deep talk about one of KISS' most polarizing albums; with many members of the KISS Army either loving it or hating it.
