Marsha Lederman is a child of Holocaust survivors. She lives with the fear that one day someone will take her and her son like the Nazis did with her parents and their parents. "This is ludicrous," she told herself many times. But then she saw how people celebrated the October 7th attacks and watched how antisemitism showed up in the circles she felt most at home. This spring to mark Holocaust Memorial Day, Lederman and child Holocaust survivor Jeanette Goldman shared their stories on Zoom at the University of Toronto's Regis College — an online event due to security reasons. They spoke about what true solidarity means today as antisemitism continues to rise in Canada. Lederman says: "We cannot allow antisemitism to stop us from speaking about antisemitism of all things."Guests in this episode:Jeanette Goldman is a retired federal judge and a child Holocaust survivor.Marsha Lederman is a journalist, daughter of Holocaust survivors, and author of Kiss the Red Stairs: The Holocaust Once Removed, and October 7th: Finding the Humanitarian Middle.Mary Jo Leddy is a Catholic theologian, author, activist, and founder of Romero House in Toronto.Bertha Yetman is a Regis College Alumnus, and organizer of “Remembering the Holocaust.”

45: Dirty Old Men, Biden's Prostate, Prison Break, & Handy Andy's and the Weiner's ReturnWelcome to episode forty-five of David & Stu… Unhinged! As always, we'd like to thank Clara Wang for creating the fantastic artwork for this podcast. In this episode, David and Stu cover the following:1) The May-December romances of David Geffen and Bill Belichick with companions 50 years younger. In Geffen's case, his relationship with his 32-year-old husband ended tragically in divorce, while Belichick's romance with a 24-year-old woman who he met "online" is blossoming like spring flowers.2) Biden's very convenient announcement that he has been diagnosed with Stage 4 prostate cancer that has metastasized to his bones and how it was merely announced now to create sympathy and distraction from all the reports about his declining physical and mental state while President including how his aides thought he may need a wheelchair during a possible second term.3) Authorities discovered the prison break that occurred in New Orleans by ten violent felons a day after their escape. This was a spectacular failure of the prison authorities, who apparently don't need liberal bail reform like we have in New York, which emptied the jails of violent criminals who terrorize New Yorkers.4) The NYC Mayoral Primary and the potential return of Handy Andy Cuomo, whose record as governor was nothing short of disastrous, most notably his COVID policies that resulted in the death of scores of elderly in nursing homes. We also discuss the other candidates, including progressive Zohran Mamdani, who refused to support a resolution acknowledging Holocaust Memorial Day. Another pervert, like Andy, is also attempting a comeback and is running for city council: Anthony Weiner, who sent pictures of his weiner to underage girls and ended up in jail.We welcome comments on our podcasts, which can be left on our website or any other platform you may be tuning in on.Connect with David & Stu:Email David & Stu: davidandstuunhinged@gmail.com and share your comments, concerns, and questions. We encourage all to visit our website (https://www.rageworksnetwork.com/show/david-stu-unhinged/) and please leave comments for our consideration.

Katie talks to former Army ranger Greg Stoker who is in Minneapolis about the protests; Palestinian analyst Mouin Rabbani about Gaza; Mahmoud Khalil's lawyer about his case; and Holocaust survivor Stephen Kapos and historian Haim Bresheeth Zabner about Holocaust Memorial Day and how the Holocaust is being used to justify the genocide in Gaza. Watch the full interview on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/posts/patreon-full-149337782 Stephen Kapos is an 87-year-old Holocaust survivor from Budapest who has been protesting against Israel's war on Gaza, which he describes as not only genocide but a holocaust. Stephen is a member of Holocaust Survivors Against Genocide. Stephen lost 15 members of his extended family in the Holocaust and his father was interned in Belsen & Theresienstadt. He settled in London but when he visited Israel was “shocked” by the racism exhibited by Israelis, including his relatives who had also survived the Holocaust. Stephen joined The Labour Party in 1997, becoming an activist and office-holder at various local levels. Stephen resigned from the Labour party, after penning a widely circulated letter, after the Labour party warned him they would “investigate” him if he spoke at a leftist organization on Holocaust Memorial Day. He is a member of Camden branch of PSC (Palestine Solidarity Campaign), Camden & Islington Momentum (affiliate of the Labour Party) and lately of the small network ‘Holocaust Survivors and Descendants Against Genocide.' Haim Bresheeth Zabnner was Professor of Media and Cultural Studies at University of East London and then a Professorial Research Associate at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS).He is Filmmaker, photographer, film studies scholar, and historian. His films include “A State of Danger,” a documentary on the first Palestinian Intifada. His books include "An Army Like No Other: How the Israel Defense Force Made a Nation." Haim is the son of two Holocaust survivors and was raised in Israel. He is a member of Holocaust survivors and Descendents Against the Genocide and a founding member of Jewish Network for Palestine. On November 4, Haim was arrested over a speech he gave at a pro Palestine demonstration outside the residence of Israeli ambassador Tzipi Hotovely in north London. Greg Stoker is a former United States Army Ranger. He has a background in special operations and human intelligence collection. He conducted 4 combat deployments to Afghanistan during the unfortunately named “Global War On Terror” and is now an anti-war activist, host of the Colonial Outcasts Podcast, and analyst at MintPress News. Mouin Rabbani is a researcher, analyst & commentator specializing in Palestinian affairs, the Arab-Israeli conflict & the contemporary Middle East. He has among other positions previously served as Principal Political Affairs Officer with the Office of the UN Special Envoy for Syria, Head of Middle East w/the Martti Ahtisaari Peace Foundation, Senior Middle East Analyst & Special Advisor on Israel-Palestine w/the Int'l Crisis Group. Rabbani is Co-Editor of Jadaliyya & a Contributing Editor of Middle East Report. Radar Online claims Queen Camilla is feeling territorial about Kate's future role, with sources alleging palace figures have warned Camilla that Catherine will one day be queen and future “perks and influence” will shift accordingly. The report also links the tension to Kate's headline-grabbing tiara moment at a recent state banquet. Separate reporting says King Charles is pushing senior royals to end the Harry and William feud, with one insider quoting him as saying, “Everyone needs to grow up,” and suggesting Charles is looking to Kate as a steady bridge between the two sides. We also have Kate's solo away day in Bradford and Wakefield, braving Storm Chandra to spotlight children's trauma therapy and community rugby, plus Charles and Camilla hosting Holocaust Memorial Day guests at Buckingham Palace. As the number of living Holocaust survivors declines, a profound question emerges: who carries these stories next – and how do we ensure they are heard, understood, and acted upon? In this episode, timed to mark Holocaust Memorial Day on January 27th, James and David are joined by Hannah Wilson, Outreach Officer at the charity Generation to Generation, alongside two G2G speakers, Vivienne Cato and and Calum Isaacs, who share their own family histories as descendants of Holocaust survivors. (You can read about their stories here https://www.generation2generation.org.uk/the-story-of-mirjam-finkelstein and here https://www.generation2generation.org.uk/holocaust-survivor-eva-cato). Together, they explore how Holocaust education remains as important, powerful and relevant for young people today – not as mere knowledge of the history, but as lived experience passed from one generation to the next. Vivienne shares the story of her mother Eva, a Slovak Jewish survivor who spent years in hiding under a false identity, and reflects on her experience of growing up in the shadow of survival, luck, and loss. Calum tells the story of his grandmother Mirjam, who survived Nazi persecution through a series of extraordinary events – including a last-minute prisoner exchange – and considers how those near-misses shape identity, values, and responsibility across generations. The conversation also examines: Why Holocaust education matters more than ever How personal testimony cuts through misinformation, distortion, and online extremism The role of ordinary people, bystanders, and complicity – not just dictators – in enabling atrocities Why students often respond with quiet focus, empathy, and deep moral questioning How Holocaust education connects to wider conversations about racism, antisemitism, democracy, and civic responsibility today Hannah reflects on what good Holocaust education looks like in practice, the challenges teachers face, and why grounding learning in real human stories helps young people develop critical thinking, empathy, and historical understanding – without reducing education to moral instruction or political indoctrination. This episode is about remembrance with purpose: how bearing witness is not only about preserving the past, but about shaping the kind of future we want to live in – and the small actions that can make a decisive difference. PREVIEW - KING CHARLES: AUSCHWITZ Colleague Gregory Copley reports on King Charles's visit to the Auschwitz Holocaust Memorial Day -- the first British sovereign to visit. More details later. 1920 Second Polish Cavalry
On January 27th 1945, the Red Army liberated the concentration camp at Auschwitz unveiling its almost unspeakable horrors to the world. The concentration camp system began almost immediately after Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany in 1933. It was an integral part of the Nazi regime's rapid dismantling of German democracy. Within weeks, the first concentration camp, Dachau, was opened to imprison political opponents, marking the start of a vast and brutal system of camps across Germany and later in the occupied territories. The camps began as places to imprison political enemies and people the Nazis deemed to be “undesirables”. But, as the Second World War progressed, these camps became centres of industrial-scale genocide, with Auschwitz becoming perhaps the most infamous. In this episode, Dan is joined by Nikolaus Wachsmann, Professor of Modern European History at Birkbeck University of London. They discuss the historical context and horrors of Auschwitz, marking Holocaust Memorial Day on the 80th anniversary of its liberation by the Red Army.Warning: This episode contains a detailed discussion of the Holocaust and genocide which some listeners may find upsetting.Sign up to History Hit for hundreds of hours of original documentaries, with a new release every week and ad-free podcasts. January 2025 The 27th of January 2025 is the eightieth anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau - an event marked annually by Holocaust Memorial Day. In order to perpetrate the mass killings and other crimes of the Holocaust, the Nazi regime needed to coordinate and communicate about its activities. This included wireless communications which were intercepted and decoded at Bletchley Park. In this episode we take a look at what the Government Code and Cypher School (Bletchley Park) knew about these Nazi crimes, how and when this information was obtained, and how western governments responded to the news. Bletchley Park's Research Historian Dr David Kenyon is joined by journalist, author and Holocaust historian Christian Jennings to discuss his work on the role of codebreaking in these terrible events. January 27 marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp. The day was chosen to be the Holocaust Memorial Day. Martin Bednárik talks to Madeline Vadkerty, an American based in Bratislava, Slovakia. She is professor, author and researcher dedicated to the topic of documenting the Holocaust. Madeline's first encounter with Slovakia was in the 1990s. She came across a letter by a woman addressed to the President of Slovak state asking for exemption from the harsh Jewish Code. After her retirement, Madeline came back to Slovakia to satisfy her curiosity. In 2020, she published a book about these letters. And her research goes on. Also on the show, she remembers Eva Mosnáková, a Holocaust survivor who has passed away last December.

Facing the California wildfires when you're disabled and marking Holocaust Memorial Day As the California wildfires continue to burn we hear the stories of disabled Los Angeles residents, Carrie and Joci, who had to make decisions around whether to evacuate or not, and if so, how they would do it without plans in place. To mark Holocaust Memorial Day, Dr Helen Atherton talks to Access All about about the Nazi's Aktion T4 programme which killed thousands of disabled people they considered “undesirable”. Dr Atherton discovered 13 of those killed were British-born and has created an exhibition to honour them called Finding Ivy. We also talk to Nancy Jennings, the great niece of one of the victims, Zkenko Hoyas. Plus Katie the Wheeled Piper plays for us on her adapted bagpipes. The 18-year-old had the honour of piping in the haggis for the BBC's Burns Night Extravaganza which is broadcast on 25 January and will be available on BBC iPlayer afterwards.
