Episode 285: As I say in the opening of this week's show, it's one thing to get applause for your songs, and it's another to get laughs. John Craigie of Portland, OR has quietly built a robust touring career because he's an excellent songwriter who also keeps his audiences in stitches between songs. His newest album is a collaboration called Pagan Church with TK and the Holy Know-Nothings, the Portland band fronted by admired songwriter Taylor Kingman. We talk about how Craigie developed his stagecraft under the influence of artists like Arlo Guthrie and his friend Todd Snider, as well as his unlikely path to performing while getting a math degree in California. No surprise, it's a lot of fun. Also in the hour, Dave Wilson and John Teer reflect on 25 years as Chatham County Line and the new directions baked into the new album Hiyo.

The new album Strange Fascination displays far-reaching vision and a warm cohesive sound, riding on the unique songwriting voice of Dave Wilson. Bio:   DIZYGOTE are a father and son duo who play original heavy music, weaving elements of folklore, storytelling and observations of our world with pounding drums and heavy guitar riffs. DIZYGOTE began as a solo project and has evolved into a powerful entity as Ethan (age 14) has come into his own as a beastly drummer with a keen ear and a deep love of metal music. Ned was raised on punk rock and metal - later immersed in the alt-country scene as a member of the influential Chatham County Line, among other projects. Both of the boys are multi-instrumentalists and are constantly working out new material to blast your earholes. We are currently supporting the self-titled released, available online everywhere. Our sound is evolving the live performances into something fresh, heavy and direct. There are elements of punk rock, old school metal, thrash, sludge, doom, prog...and the new music continues to take us down new paths. We aim for benevolent world domination. THE HOLMES BROTHERS are true treasures of American roots music. For 35 years, The Holmes Brothers joyous and moving blend of blues, gospel, soul, R&B, rock n roll and country has been captivating audiences around the world. Their spine-tingling three-part harmony singing, mixing Wendells gruff and gravelly vocals with Popsys soaring falsetto and Shermans rich baritone, brings the spirit of gospel-inflected deep soul music into every song they perform. The bands new Alligator Records album, 'Brotherhood' is another stellar chapter in The Holmes Brothers storied and still-evolving history. CHATHAM COUNTY LINE enters their second decade as an ensemble, the band bring a deep reverence for traditional American roots music and timeless bluegrass instrumentation to insightful, poetic original songs that are powerfully contemporary yet rich with the complex resonance of their southern heritage. Over the course of six studio albums and performances around the world, they have pursued a singular style that is entirely their own, yet connects with audiences from all walks. 'Tightrope' is the title of the band's new album released on Yep Roc Records.

Lastly was Dave and John of Chatham County Line who came by in the last hour to promote their brand new album Wildwood, which is set to be released on July 13. Wildwood is the band's fifth album since becoming a group in 1999. Dave and John spent a great deal of the interview reminiscing of their local music influences over the years, and we spent some time talking about how those bands played a role in their sound. A list of local bands and artists that the guys specifically named is on the right. You also may not realize it, but CCL is a very famous band over in Europe. Despite their humble beginnings and small fanbase in the states, these guys regularly sell out crowds across the Atlantic. Naturally, I had to ask them where that came from. All in all, it was a terrific hour of casual conversation, one which I won't soon forget. You can catch Chatham County Line at the Cats Cradle this coming Saturday July 10.
