This week Tom & Zeus review the 1997 grunge influenced KISS album, "Carnival Of Souls: The Final Sessions" This was KISS' 17th studio album and the 22nd KISS studio album reviewed by SIOL. Carnival Of Souls is a very polarizing KISS album. The album was recorded with the Revenge era KISS lineup right before the KISS Reunion. However, it was not released immediately. Bootleg copies of the album were wildly circulated and the band then decided to release the album on October 28, 1997. The band did not promote the album, nor tour on the album. It also was deemed to be KISS trying to be grunge. The album was produced by Alice In Chains producer, Toby Wright. The songs were dark and heavy with a lot of grunge like qualities. This may have suited the Revenge era KISS, especially Gene Simmons, but not Paul Stanley. This ended up becoming the last non-makeup KISS album and the last album with Bruce Kulick as well. This is the only album to feature Bruce Kulick on lead vocals on a KISS song, the last track on the album, "I Walk Alone." As usual the guys breakdown and analyze the tracks and rank the songs SIOL style. As always, they then compare the album and album cover and rank it against the previous studio albums reviewed. Find out who loves this album and who calls this album "Music From The Elder Part Two" and if that's a positive thing. Oh and don't miss the discussion of another Gene Simmons classic song title. Alice In Chains had toured the world with the release of their massively successful sophomore album Dirt. By the time they returned to Seattle, however, two big changes had occurred. The band parted ways with their original bassist Mike Starr and they were unexpectedly evicted from their home. Fortunately, guitarist Jerry Cantrell had booked time with engineer Toby Wright during their tour under the guise of collaborating on new material. Unbeknownst to Wright, the band had nothing. After spending the last few years in front of high-watt amplifiers, Alice In Chains felt they desperately needed a palette cleanser. They moved into London Bridge Studio with a few acoustic guitars and their newest member Mike Inez (ex-Ozzy Osbourne) to see what they were capable of creating together. Although they had no intentions of writing a new record, Alice In Chains emerged with Jar Of Flies: an emotional half-hour packed with rich vocal harmonies and diverse instrumentation combined with the band's classic grit. This week on Riff Worship the guys dote on Alice In Chains, discuss the instabilities before and after this release, and attempt to answer the question: "Does Jar Of Flies have riffs?" Date: November 2, 2022Name of podcast: Backstage Pass RadioEpisode title and number:  S3: E15: Clint Woolsey & James Beau Edwards (Stone Senate) -Dusk, Dawn, & Down Home HooksArtist Bio -Stone Senate has been called “a heavier version of Lynyrd Skynyrd, crossed with The Allman Brothers Band”. While being mentioned in such heady company is flattering, one thing Stone Senate is most definitely not, is a retro act. They are taking what came naturally from their collective influences a step further.Fronted by lead vocalist/guitarist Clint Woolsey's smoldering, soulful vocals and unmistakable stage presence, stage left and stage right are burning with dual lead guitars of James Edwards and Ted Hennington. Add to these the blood bonded rhythm section of “The Mud Brothers”- Paul Zettler on bass/vocals and David Zettler on drums/vocals and you have caught lightning in a bottle.Having been together since 2012, the band has built a loyal following through a relentless year round touring schedule, that has enabled them to widen their collective set list of band and audience favorites, “Right Side Up” (2014), “Martha” (2016) and “Lazy River” (2016), of Country and Rock legendary songs, like the George Strait cover of “The Fireman” (2020), new original music from their EP “Dusk” (2021), with the singles “Whiskey Helps”, “Slow Crusade” and “Down”, and coming in 2022, the Toby Wright produced record, “Between the Light and Dark”.With over 600 shows throughout the US in the last few years, Stone Senate is steadily adding more and more dates each year and looking forward to some great new music in 2022!Sponsor Link:WWW.ECOTRIC.COMBackstage Pass Radio Social Media Handles:Facebook - @backstagepassradiopodcast @randyhulseymusicInstagram - @Backstagepassradio @randyhulseymusicTwitter - @backstagepassPC @rhulseymusicWebsite - backstagepassradio.com and randyhulsey.comArtist Media Handles:Website - www.stonesenate.comInstagram  - https://www.instagram.com/stonesenateFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/stonesenateTwitter - https://twitter.com/stonesenateCall to actionWe ask our listeners to like, share, and subscribe to the show and the artist's social media pages. Ep 177: Your Multiple Identities - Kai-Isaiah Jamal (Spoken Word Poet, Performer, Model & Trans Visibility Artist)

360 Yourself!

Play Episode Listen Later May 8, 2022 43:42

Kai-Isaiah Jamal is a spoken word poet, performer, model and trans visibility activist using Instagram as a tool for good. Kai draws on their own personal experiences as a trans person of colour dealing with dysphoria, displacement and uncertainty– unraveling huge, universal themes through the lens of poetics online and bringing us their audience in, concluding simply that to be human is to feel all of these things. Their work both as a performer and writer is simultaneously disruptive and casual. Often performing from their bed their poetry pulls from classical literature, lyrics, pop-culture, neologisms, slang and internet-speak, seamlessly blending both high and low vernacular. Their main focus is shining a light on marginalised voices and perspectives which they do both as a writer and activist, with a specific focus on the narratives of trans/queer, black and working class folk. Kai has become for many a new kind of online hero, uplifting, and championing their community and beyond through meme-culture, performance art and grass-roots activism making their audience feel both seen and heard. Kai debuted their poem-come-script 'Snap My Legs and Ask Me to Crip Walk. All the Ways I'm Dancing/Dying For You' as part of London DRAF'S take over at Ministry of Sound for London's 2019 Frieze Week curated by Louise O'Kelly. Named ICA's first ever Poet in Residence Kai has been recognised by some of the UK's largest artistic institutions. They work closely with The Tate, The Freeword Centre, The Barbican and The National Gallery, democratising the artform of poetry and ushering in a new more diverse and intersectional audience who might previously have not felt welcome in those spaces. Using their artform as a means of breaking down barriers and infiltrating previously closed-off spaces is at the core of their activism. Bringing their people along with them is something that skewers all of their work. As a model, working alongside brands such as Stella McCartney, Vivienne Westwood, FENTY and Burberry, Kai hopes to be more than just a ‘face'. The aim for Kai is that young people might better see themselves reflected back in the advertising and marketing they digest. Recognising the power of brands today, Kai understands the urgency of having faces, bodies and genders like theirs in global fashion imagery. Kai also contributes written work to online platforms such as Vogue (where they're an Editor at Large) i-D, Vice and Broadly and was named as one of the Dazed 100 list in 2019. Kai's hopes to also bring a visibility to non-binary, trans and queer communities, people and identities who have often been erased from mainstream culture. Their voice, while heavy with the weight of being a marginalised body in today's society, is also irreverent, joyful, hopeful, inspiring and evidently, infectious.
